King's Hollow Address, Parties' Movement Goes On

Seven Party Alliance (SPA)’s Joint Movement Committee has rejected king’s offer of Primiership and vowed to continue the protest. According a press release issued by them, the movement goes on, General Strike will continue for the 17th day tomorrow.

SPA’s top leaders’ opinion will be published only after their meeting tomorrow afternoon. Meanwhile, UML’s Standing Committee is holding its meeting tomorrow morning at 8 am. It will decide on UML’s position. UML’s leader Amrit Bohara said that he can dwell upon the issue only after the meeting. His reticence had earlier sent a chilling message that UML and NC may have been seduced by India’s offer. But, things are appearing in different shapes now. Most of the vocal party leaders said that the address has failed to address the movement as well as the 12 point agreement. People are frustrated by its inability to deal with the major concerns country is facing today.

Party leaders have remarked that the appointment of a PM is not an antidote to the political maladies. Meanwhile, Maoist spokesman Krishna Bahadur Mahara told BBC that the address not only failed to deal SPA’s agenda, but also kept mum over the issue of Constituent Assembly(CA). It was noteworthy of Mahara when he said that Maoist’s further move will be based on the dialogue with SPA.

The post-address message is loud and clear: king has once again tried to fool the public in general and political parties in particular. As the address is scrutinized and dissected, king’s motives have been crystal clear. India played vital role to strike a deal with king. It was only after Dr. Karan Singh delivered his PM’s letter that king was convinced to address the nation. Indian applause to king’s proclamation shows that India was behind all this conspiracy. So, this is an Indian roadmap to which king consented. Meanwhile, UML leaders Jhalanath Khanal and Bamdev Gautam were arrested today at TIA while returning from Delhi.

Im a nutshell, king has himself paved a way for a republican Nepal. The ongoing movement will not cease unless a fair election of CA. Any kind of outcome of that poll will be acceptable.

So SPA has officially rejected the Raja G’s offer ? Or it is just the view of Deuba, Paudel or Situala ? And please give us a break, everyone knew from Karan Singh’s visit that he was bringing something nobody was going to reject. No point now talking about it. But by this couple of things are clear. SPA wants nothing but a republic, they trust Maoists over Raja G, and they are ready to piss big brother India off : ) ..

King G did more damage to monarchy than the murder of King B or even Paras.

King’s offer might have been enough a year or two ago. Not anymore. The nation has decided to move forward leaving the King behind. Trying to be too clever, King G missed his opportunity. He should have got a clue from the turnout at the municipality election. But just wanted to live in a bubble.

Time and tide waits for no man, including a King.

    Dagger,

Your stats are wrong. The Govt. under King killed majority of the 13,000 killed during the maoist war. According to INSEC, approx. 2/3 of the 13,000 deaths were attributed to the Government forces and majority of the 13,000 lives were lost after the King G first called emergency and sacked Deuba.

Maoists are to be blamed for starting the war. But King G is to be blamed for his stubborness and prolonging the mess, which cost us so many lives. KIng G killed thousands of people and he has blood on his hand.

dagger, that figure of 13,000 you mention is the total of all deaths during the insurgency, NOT ALL DEATHS COMMITTED BY MAOISTS. Many of those deaths were commited by the army…don’t forget that. Both sides have blood on their hands.

Was it a democratic offer of king G? It is all is under his condition again, that only works towards his own resignation.

A vote for the people works very different.
His first question should be: What do You like?
the second thing, he should do is: put himself in a vunarable position, to re-estalish his position. He never did, but if he would do now, it IS to late.

A few innovative, creative, independent and hounest young specialists who are charged with overseeing the formation of an interim government should be appointed by a group of wise leaders.

Your concerns are valid but King G’s rule has made the Maoists stronger. King G has alienated the parties and people, his traditional supporters and looked after his well being, thus making Maoists more powerful. This situation would not have been created if he was not this stubborn.

Also, I do not think we can defeat maoists militarliy. We should start a negotiation and disarm them with help of UN, and move forward. Playing games and hollow actions and speech from both King G and parties will not solve the problem.

What we need is King G to step aside completely. Parties will form a Government and negotiate with Maoists / for constituent assembly and move forward. If not dilly dallying by changing Government will only make Maoists stronger and make your fear a reality.

I can understand the anger of SPA. If King had announced these things only on the 14th April he would have saved a lot and may be agitation would have calmed down. But its too late. It can eat up the Monarchy itself. So from the very beginning King has ulterior motives. He was cocerned about Maoists, that he said to take the full powers, but he wanted to destroy the parties and prolong and consolidate his rule for always. He appointed the dendents of Judha Shamsher everywhere.Like, Prabal, Prajwol, Srish, Nikchhya and depended on the advice of Sharad Chandra Shah,Bharat keshar, satchit etc.The most allergic was the Tulsi Giri who was called from exile to punish the Nepalese people. They should be caught and lynched by the mob as in French revolution.Kamal and Niranjan are already there who were detrimental in the fall of Panchayat and Birendra.KG had real intentions to perpetualise his rule.

The people he chose were wrong people. He risks the throne now.

Does anyone has any idea about the 12 points agreement between SPA and Maoists ? I am pretty sure they had discussed the current situation back then. If SPA wants to play fair, they are not going to accept the king’s offer. Because I don’t think Maoists had agreed upon the alliance anything lesser than the Constitutional Assembly. They can either persuade Maoists now to join them in the interim government or continue the andolan until another response from Raja.

I personally wish they should take the offer. Hold the constitutional assembly, let the voters to decide if they want to keep Raja amymore or not.

i am concerned that demonstrators in kalanki set fire and vandalised Land Revenue Office in Kalanki. We must protest for democracy but lets not vandalize public property. Why dont they understand is : Government office and property are our own. We must not vandalize them. Its our taxes that builds those furnitures and building. Destroying it will not affect those in power but the money that we pay will have to be used to rebuild and less money will go other required areas such as health in remote villages in Nepal.

    Glade,

King’s speech is so vague that I do not know what he is offering. He says that he is giving sovereignty back to people but he is invoking an article in the constitution that vests executive power to the King and the council of ministers. So the King could be either giving up in good faith or he could be just playing games.

Since he is asking parties to submit a PM candidate, it could be interpreted that King still holds the supreme power i.e. power to dismiss Governments again using the same constitution. If this is the case, then I do not think we should accept it. Army still backs king, and I think accepting this offer will only create a Government too weak to do anything without royal blessing. So I do not think constituent assembly or negotiations with Maosists will be possible without King’s agreement.

    Just my thoughts.

  47. Hellow Avatar

    Accepting this offer for PM:

Issues: Parties need to stay united and need to bargain with the King skillfully. There is danger that King may outmaneuver the parties and take back the power

    Pros:
    – Less bloodshed in urban areas
    – Accepted by the International community including India, US, EU

    Cons:
    – King still holds power and may dismiss the Government again to his liking in a later date
    – Risk that division in SPA will emerge to King’s advantage
    – Not acceptable to Maoists, who will start the war
    – Not acceptable to many people who want republic and danger that Maoists may take advantage of it and make Maoists more powerful
    – All the cronies like Kamal Thapa and so on may go scot free

    Not Accepting the Offer

Issues: Need to keep the momentum in the movement and hardships to people and need to complete the movement before monsoon

    Pros
    – Power to people and parties
    – It will create a Government powerful enough to create Constituent assembly or negotiate with Maoists

    Cons
    – More bloodshed
    – Risk of losing the momentum
    – Will the World Media still keep watching Nepal?

It is a tough call. I hope party leaders will rise above to take the responsibility gravely. I hope people will watch keenly and keep pressuring parties, King, and the Maoists.

From the day King Birendra was killed I have seen that Internet postings (such as this one) have been monitored and disinformation planted by royalists. These infiltrators know that the Internet plays a critical role in information society, but ironically, they are way out of tune with reality as regards the people’s feelings for the monarchy in Nepal today. Or maybe they are just paid mercenaries without any loyalties – how much is it now, $2 an hour to spread fear of “Maoist Takeover” on Internet forums today?

Isn’t it ironic that England’s Queen celebrated her 80th birthday in style and happy throngs lined the streets on the same day as people are spitting on Nepali monarch’s face? Well, this is what happens when a person is not satisfied with what he has and wants more and more and more. Was 66 crore rupees per annum not sufficient for this king to live a comfortable life while commoners die in villages for want of paracetamol? What is also instructive from this episode is how King Gyanendra built a wonderful trap for others and fell in it himself. Once cornered there is no way out for him now.

This movement is peoples’ movement. It will be a shame if SPA tries to take much credit for it. And if SPA tries to be too clever and accept what is not acceptable to the people in the streets, people will turn against them as well. People are not afraid of the King, SPA or Maoists. Nepali people have had enough. They want a democratic society where they can speak with freedom and without looking over their shoulders. They want to live without fear of King or Maoists.

Let’s salute the brave people of Nepal !! While we in foreign countries were afraid even to watch TV for fear of what might happen on days of shoot-at-sight curfew, and while we frantically telephoned our loved ones not to go out of homes, people in Nepal came out in hundreds of thousands, not caring for their lives. I should be ashamed for my cowardice, and rightly so.

Those who gave orders to shoot peaceful protesters should now be quickly apprehended and charged in court. The process-based society demands that it be the first step taken, so as not to insult the blood spilled in the streets.

The people have spoken: It’s time for the end of monarchy in Nepal.

Nepalese people are expecting a tansition not a back turn. Several prime ministers were selected under the article 35, do u still think this is a step down?

I don’t see any slight stepping down of king instead he is making a chess-move for another favorable condition to victimise the democracy.

This is a move to turn the international pressure from him (it seems international communities, namely US and India, were looking for a room to hit back the people’s aspirations).

I agree the emotional feeling bloggers are expressing here, no more bloodshed, but how long we will be compromising with this saha regime.

US and India pretend not understood the meaning of nepalese voice otherwise they would not have welcomed this incomplete call.

This was a transition point in the past to step up for a chairman of council of ministers by king.

This is our fight!, history respects the outcome.

The king did not address the two key things the SPA wanted: restoration of parliament and a constitutional assembly to decide if they need a new constitution, one that perhaps would not include a monarchy! gyanendra cleverly hedged around this one, so in a way, he is still in full control, as he interpreted the present constitution in any way he wanted to. If you have a new constitution, you could leave the king out of the process entirely, and allow the people to be in control. A constitution of the people, by the people and for the people, and not OF GYANDENDRA BY GYANENDRA AND FOR GYANENDRA
