Update (17:00 PM): Journalists, members of Nepali civil society and political activists took out a rally this afternoon that began from New Baneshwor and ended in Maitighar Mandala as a corner meeting. Addressing the mass Prateek Pradhan, editor of the Kathmandu Post, said that Kantipur Publications, publisher of the Post and Kantipur daily, will not be intimidated by the Maoist threat. He thanked all people for participating and demonstrating solidarity to Kantipur. He also said that Kantipur Publications will continue fighting against the autocratic attitude of the Maoist party. The voice of freedom and the voice of Kantipur will prevail, he said. He also informed the mass that Maoist activists were picketing the Kantipur Complex to bar the journalists and other staffs from participating in the rally. Other prominent personalities including former Nepal Bar Association president Shambhu Thapa, chief of SAFMA Nepal Gopal Thapaliya, Federation of Nepali Journalists president Bishnu Nishturi, prominent actor Sunil Pokharel expressed their solidarity with the Kantipur’s struggle against Maoist.

Filmmaker Samjhana Upriety Rauniar hold a copy of the eastern region edition of Kantipur that was printed in Biratnagar and was brought to Kathmandu by Kantipur Publications.

Meanwhile, Maoist activists surrounded the Kantipur complex and barred some journalists from getting out of the complex and participate in the rally.

Maoist cadres are holding a meeting in the middle of the street in front of Kantipur Complex creating havoc in the traffic.

Journalists looked fearful and anxious about what might happen next. Some reporters have returned from the rally and the chief reporter is telling them to start writing news. “Hurry up guys,” he said. “We must do our duty.”

Update 13:25 PM: Around 70 Maoist Young Communist League activists are surrounding the Eastern regional office of Kantipur Publications in Biratnagar. They are sloganeering against the papers. Eastern editions of both papers were printed (though Maoists disturbed the distribution) from Biratnagar while printing press in Bharatpur and Kathmandu remained closed.

Latest: Both Kantipur and the Kathmandu Post weren’t published from Kathmandu (National editions) today for the second consecutive day (and for the third time in the week). The printing press hasn’t been fixed yet. Maoists also prevented Western editions of both papers from being printed at the printing press in Bharatpur. The Maoist’s All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF) threatened to bomb Kantipur Publications’ Bharatpur office. The Eastern editions of the papers were printed from Biratnagar but the Maoist cadres obstructed the circulation of both dailies. They confiscated copies of the papers taken for distribution in the region and burnt them.

Kantipur Press Vandalized

An employee at the printing press of the Kantipur Publications inspects the wires and control panel switches that were vandalized by the Maoist unionists. Because of this vandalism, both Kantipur and the Kathmandu Post, Nepal’s largest dailies, haven’t been published from Kathmandu.

The rally (02 October) came at Maitighar Mandala and turned into a meeting.

Kantipur Publications

From inside the Kantipur Complex. The gate was closed as the Maoists were holding a meeting (02 October) outside issuing threats against the newspapers.

Meanwhile, Kantipur Publications has stated that the threat issued by the CPN-Maoist to close down Kantipur Daily and The Kathmandu Post forever and shut down Kantipur Television in the next four days in the name of their so-called “exposure program” against the Publications has drawn its serious attention. “The party’s public statement that the people’s right to information won’t be affected even if Kantipur Publications is closed down is extremely regrettable,” Chairman of the Publications Hem Raj Gyawali said in a statement issued Monday. “We are stunned by the remarks of Maoist lawmaker and Chairman of All Nepal Trade Union Federation, Salik Ram Jamkattel, who on Monday afternoon gathered his party cadres in YCL attire in front of Kantipur Complex and openly threatened to abduct and physically assault the Publications’ management officials and journalists categorically mentioning their names,” the statement added.

Kantipur visits PM

A team from Kantipur Publications including top management officials and editors and Federation of Nepali Journalists chairman yesterday visited the Prime Minister to apprize him of the latest on Maoist intimidation to the Publications. The PM assured them that he will not compromise on freedom of the press. Editors’ Alliance has condemned the attack on Kantipur.

  1. Everybody must unite and fight againts Maoist tyranny ! Down with Maoist. Lets defend press freedom and freedom of people. That is the only way to stop these maoist terrorist and YCL hooligans.

  4. Hmmm, may be it’s really time to unite against maoists , forget all the business competition, forget all personal vengence, forget all political alignation, all the press fraternity should voice against the brazen attack on press (free??).If Kantipur gets bogged down as it’s competitors earlier, it should be considered as huge moral boosting win for Maoists. Kantipur should initiate an awareness program in public and try to clarify what happened and what was the real intention behind those distruptions including Samacharpatra and APCA. The power of media is huge provided they have public support. I believe April movement was a success due to the large part of contribution from press esp Kantipur.

Kantipur has to initiat a fight not only for it’s survival but for the survival of whole Media and Press some how that related to democratic process as well. Not a bad time to start a campaign against maoists from all front, isolate them politically and publicly, if they resort to violence let’s not hesitate to retaliate, the intimidation must come to hault now. As govt. has shown it’s unability, you should rely on people, bring them on the streets, announce a public support campaign for free press. Let people take care of them, let them taste another Terai in the valley!!

If you compromise like others did, make no mistake about it, Kantipur is dead!!

  5. All the bleeding hearts intellectuals and high priest and master of ceremony see how it boomerangs when done without rational but only with silly and outright vengence.

  6. We must thank the Maoists for exposing what they are up to now, the right time to express one’s intention- just before the CA polls. They have been showing by their actions why we should not vote for the Maoists. Thank you for being so unambiguous.

I condemn this act by the Maoists- in whatever name and colour they might be.

  7. King Gyanendra tried to control Kantipur Publications, Kantipur TV and Kantipur FM during his short rule. Now Maoists are doing the same. Just think about it.

  8. A country where there is no free press is called a dictatorship…. Nepali people deserve more than that. Your country is great, the people are great, the landscapes are great so please, fight to get free press, free elections and a real democracy . Fatality does not exit, you must fight to reach your goals…. not with arms but with your mind.
To the reporters : thanks for relating what is happening in Nepal, your work is vital for you and your country.

    Zouz ( France)

  9. Today’s news: Lute Home Minister deplores Maoist union’s attack in Kantipur Publications. I am wonedring what he eats for his duties and responsibilities? He just can not enforce the law. Only ….?

Any way I must thank Maoists who have exposed themselves not the Kantipur. People will really think before they vote if CA happens. Moreover I agree most with Maheela Sahu for his opinion regarding “Nagrik samajka haguwa and doller premi manav adhikarbadi ??”

  10. Its hideous what the so called supreme Maoist are doing, Do not vote for them, its request. I am not a politician nor a leader, but a citizen of Nepal. Just think, before they have the government they vandalise, so much loss of property, so many lifes , if after they win and form a government we will never be safe from their torchers! Dont Vote for them, it would be wrong to do so.Nepal will never be safe if they take over!

  11. Nepali people must know the latest version of Polpot and stalin in Nepal. you know one thing stupid Baburam and prachand are must foolish people. They not only stop the republician Nepal but also will finish their existence. I had good wish to maoist when i was in Nepal but i was wrong on their fucking propaganda. They just try to establish polpot propagand in nepal, which 100% impossible. Kantipur is the good newspaper so donot worry that people are with you. keep contiue fight through blog and newssite against maoist activities in Kantipur. we support from overseas.

  12. ‘Home Minister deplores Maoist union’s attack on Kantipur’

HAHA, thank god , he didnot demand strong action against the perpetrators, what a genius!!

Why shouldn’t we get rid of this good for nothing fellow, I haven’t seen anybody such incompetent in his/her job ever!!

Let’s have another campaign for removing this idiot aswell!!

    What a Shit-aula!!

  13. dear frens ….this is only the starting.watch, they will show their real color of skin.they r saying that they r fighting for the people of nepal.fight my ass.i dont see any news and any good things they r doing good for nepali citizens.everyday i see violence that they made.y dont they stop.from allthe way i came to know that the most top leader parchande and other sub leader they want a supreme power.and they want to dictate in this country.

  14. To people like Neil, Wagle and other pro-maoist groups that are blogging on this website. I don’t know why these supporters shut up when there is blatant challenege of law and order in a nation. These idiots then come up with excuses after excuses for the utter and shameless disrespect for a nation’s constitution and laws.

Blatant threats of blasts, show of arms and tyranny, threats to the common nepali with physical scuffles. Disrespecting other political party workers and leaders. Calling and cancelling bandhs that affect lives of millions of Nepalese people. And we have the so called educated foreignegr like Neil who obviously sympathizes but more shameful is coming up with excuses for these left right and center. Then we have Mr. Wagle the brain behind this blog who has absolutely nothing to say.

This blog is a pro-maoist website run and fueled by zealots like Neil and Wagle who do not want to understand the plight of an ordinary citizen. These people use big words and political terms to misguide the other moderates who come to read on this website.

The facts are clear, Maoists are terrorists, they have always been, will always be. They are a threat to national unity, to freedom of press, voice and of human rights. They cannot control their party workers, and one cannot trust their leaders what so ever. Nepal is doomed because of these people who impose like the Taliban their laws on the people with arms and brutal torture and physical abuse. What makes this party a polticial party is beyond my comprehension.

Equally shameful is the Home Minister who has his nuts shove up in his mouth. Probably his wife is sleeping around please Maoist leaders as much as his silence has prostitutionalized the nepal police force who have not been able to clamp down on these issues and provide the basic necessity of security. Sitaula will scratch his bald head and in 9 months he will not b sure which Maoist leader’s child she has bore. This guy needs to be shot as sson as possibel for the sake of the nation.

  16. Can I have some freedom of expression here too, Mr Wagle?? What was that objectionable in my comment to moderate, I wonder!!

  17. well, its high time everybody should unite to get rid of maoists, YCL and their hooligans from the country. they do not want CA election, they can’t tolerate free media and press freedom, no respect for law and order….. so, the only option left for all nepalis is to kick the maoists out from this country or send them back to jungles…. as jungle is the right place for animals…..

  18. Pol pot Prachande:

You can never be a democrat because you are a terrorist and you always encourage you YCL thugs to engage in vandalism and terrorism. Your maoist party has been exposed to the whole world, and the whole world is watching your YCL thugs’ atrocities. You are a coward because you fear to face CA election. You should be fed human wastes before you are hanged at Tundikhel.

  19. The democratic parties should get the army on standby and the rest of us freedom loving people should hit the streets. Janandolan 3 – to kick the maoists out for good. Let’s get them from every nook and corner.

  20. sounds furmula given by power centre is working to use nepali people against nepali ppl,

are we cutting our feet ourselves? why kantipur cant solve their internal problem themselves? why to fire workers? so we middle class and upper class ppl are against lower class ppl?

its just enlarged issue. every newpaper or so called media used same furmula wen trade union asked for rights, they close it. easy way. and corcodile tears. and we fool support . go on and on. its stupidity.

  21. do we have time to read the following?

  22. kantipur Television is Nepal’s “Al Jazeera”. Ban them for all.

Good work maoists.. keep it up…

  23. Mr. Dahal, it is not polpot and stalin time. Gyanendra patha and prachand patha are so close. it is not only internal matter of kantipur but alsoattack of freedom of nepali. We know freedom and democracy will win.

  24. Ha ha ha. I just cant have enough of this. I have to admit I’m really enjoying what the maoists have been doing to Kantipur. When you bring people who would be best left in the jungles or gunned down, to govern you, this is what you get. Talk about regression, we’re returning to medieval times now. This was totally expected as far as I am concerned. And so much for the ‘mission journalism’ that Kantipur had been doing which actually brought Maoists to the mainstream. Got the courage fu*k*rs? Then do to Maoists what you did you the king.

  25. Pol pot Prachande’s habaldar Krishna Sitaula deplores maoist attack on Kantipur. What can you do besides deploring the attacks by maoist thugs because Pol pot Prachande is your sadu Dai, right?

  26. I completely agree with Shreejan. This was expected and a lot of people were warning the SPA against this design.

  27. I have nothing but contempt for the above bloggers expressng their happiness at the attack on Kantipur Publications. Shows how rotten their mindset and mentality are.

  28. This is too much, even this blog doesn’t have freedom of expresssion, moderation for two days??

  29. Tori Laure:

Do you want to meet the same fate that your Comrade Kumar Tolange met at Gaur. The days of you YCL (young criminal league) thugs are numbered like your master murderer pol pot Prachande.

  30. here comes comment from “Al Jazeera’s madise reporter”

Come on YCL get rid of these newspaper which were never meant for nepalese people.

  31. Maobadis attack on independent media (pvt) is just another step in their strategic warfare. They have succeeded in making the govt media their own pvt tool by annointing their key lackies in the Information Ministry. If they can now control the independent media, they will CONTROL INFORMATION. Those who control information guides the agenda.

Indpendent media does not follow the party agenda. They cannot attack the freedom of the press so they are using the pressure tactics by using their radical trade union to strike.

The workers are pawn in their game of cat & mouse. They don’t care for the workers. They just a tool to their end of total CONTROL.

Maos are all demanding their rights like demanding a special session of the Interim Parliament, but, they do not realize their duties of a political party. Their own sitting MP is out threatening to bring down media. Where is the justice? They are hypocrites. They are showing their true colours.

They are afraid. They are jittery. They are nervous. They see their end. It is just a matter of time. People will speak.

  32. To all the concerned people out there Whatever you post your comment in blog sites or you make decisions, what I want to say is you just judge both side’s opinion and decide by yourself. Before supporting Kantipur television you just try to find out why Maoist are doing such. What is the genuine reason behind doing all that? Do you know anything about labour and peasant’s demands????
Remember, We all know that our leaders and rulers only know the languages of fierce attack and the banda ahawan (for e.g. MFJ style).
Yes, It is not good to block people’s right for news and media, but it’s not good to neglect the genuine demands of the workers of kantipur for such a long time.
What more can maoist do if their demands and problems aren’t fixed for such a long time. Aren’t maoist people of Nepal?
Kantipur television aired the news about the incident in their complex for a long time in the NEWS programme, but did they try to tell people about the demands of the workers?
    Judge by yourself?

    Nishant Chalise

  33. Introvert,

I had also queried when this news first broke whether it was a matter that was internal, however you are just stating what Mahara said. When a Member of Parliament (Shalikram Jarmakattel) announces in open view that they will shut down the media for good – this is’nt an internal matter buddy comrade. And when the party backs the YCL to vandalise press it most certainly is’nt an internal matter.

    And Mr. Chrlise,

Wwhat workers can do is get together and strike, not use thugs and terrorists to do their bidding.

  34. whatever the reason be: internal or external? this “Al Jazeera” must be shut down.

three cheers for YCL, keep up the good work.

  35. Ha, ha. Al Jazeera. That’s another compliment for Kantipur TV and Kantipur Publications. Aj Jazeera is blamed as extremist Islamist fundamentalist’s mouthpiece by America. Palestinians blame that Al Jazeera serves Israeli interest and Israel thinks it’s an Arab world propaganda station against the state of Israel. Arab world thinks Al Jazeera is run by secret funding of CIA. These are not my statement but of a journalist associated with that network. If you are too good, you are attacked by all sides because all sides envy you. Ditto with Kantipur.

  36. Tapai haru kina Al Jazeera ko naam li rakhnu bha cha. Al jazeera is one of the top news channel in the world and in my personal opinion better than BBC or CNN. yadi Al Jazeera ramro nabhako bhae BBC ra CNN ka tyatro karmachari Al Jazzera ma jane nai thiena.

  37. Mr scroop,
Don’t you think our country doesn’t develop due to kind of peoples who blindly supports a stream, and move just like a herd of sheep. For your kind information I am not a comrade and not a supporter of Maoist. I believe and support only those people who can change our country that may be either from maoist, congress, UML or may be from King’s panel.
U kind of people just doesn’t take the thing as it is seen and kept in front of you. U for eg. Advocate punishing Mr. Kamal Thapa for his direction of curfew during Jana Andolan-2 which gave rise to shoot-out of some peoples. But hey, have you ever noticed how many 100 or 1000 peoples have been killed during these days in Terai and various part of Nepal. Isn’t Mr. Krishna Sitaula responsible for that? Isn’t curfews imposed in different part of the country been responsible for all these killings and is in accordance to the direction of Sitaula just like the way Mr. Thapa did earlier. So shouldn’t Sitaula be punished for this?
Kantipur is a leading media company in Nepal. Whatever or most of the things (news) you see, hear is oriented and directed from this company. And how to deviate point and how to change the way Normal Nepali people take the things (news) into their mind has a great influence upon kantipur’s way of telling news. So I urge you not to be twisted by the fact.
For your suggestion, maobadi haroo le dheerai aghi dekhi nai yas kura ko birodh gardai aayeko thiyo, negotiation garna, barta garna pani bhaneko thiyo. BUT Sathi, patra, letter, bigyapti ko bhasha na bujhane lai ke garna sakincha ra. Ek palta kehi karmachari lai room ma thunney pani kaam gareko thiyo few weeks ago. Tyaspachi pani nikas nikalne kaam garna chaheko thiyena kantipur le. Tyasaile aba maoist le yastai na garey k garne, Wadi mahila jasari ardhanagna hunu paryo ra sathi.

Finally, “now don’t point me out as Mandaley or darbariyas.” for giving example of Kamal Thapa.

    Nishant Chalise

  38. kirat…well m happpy for this attack coz kantipur is another tabl***t…..!wish good lucto PRACHANDA for this..GYAWALI sud b screwed ..coz he has screwed ppl.

  39. “While there is debate on a precise definition of Civil Society – most
would agree that it is an essential component of well-functioning
governments – democratic or otherwise. Modern democracies cannot
function without a vibrant Civil Society. …”

“The most visible and most vocal of the lot from Nepali Civil Society,
of course, are the media and the Human Rights NGOs – the political
component Civil Society. Notable (and extremely vocal yet boring)
Civil Society members in Nepal are Devendra Raj Pandey, Kanak Mani
Dixit, Sushil Pyakhurel, Dinesh Prasai, Krishna Pahadi, and Narayan
    Wagle…”

“Their collective thinking is characterized by a venal disdain or
    hatred of Western values (with special emphasis on the United States);
a romantic notion of “peace” that humanity’s long history and basic
principles of State governance (even democratic governance) does not
validate; a willingness to appease anyone to ensure their analysis is
“correct” – even it results in great suffering to the very people they
claim to protect; and a moral sanctimony that masks their
    character….”

“So jail time during Jana-andolan became a revolving door to wear as a
badge of honor to brag at an Embassy function with the good ‘ol boys
from DFID but the game is turning deadly – as Kantipur publications
and other media houses are learning…”

“They parrot what their Masters believe and have never come across as
principled fighters for stable government – for stable government
requires force that causes pain on a certain segment of the
population. Democratic societies have always been tested in
maintaining order while also having to follow the rule of law….”

“The day when individuals like Kanak Dixit, Devendra Raj Panday,
Sushil Pyakhurel, Dinesh Prasai, and a cast of dozens and dozens from
Nepali Civil Society can have principled individuals opposing them is
when we will take another important step in establishing stable
democracy in Nepal – if there remains a Nepal at that time…”

  40. newspaper, TV, FM, online news .. various media under single roof

this is just a bullshit and does not happen anywhere except Nepal.

Have you heard of BBC publishing newspapers? Have you heard of NYTimes broadcasting news?

  41. kantipur is operating various media with just a single source of info. What if the source is reliable? those media will publish/broadcast false information.

come on nepali “Al Jalzeera” urf kantipur, you should know the ethics of journalism “Misleading information is far too Dangerous”.

Carry on your good work YCL !!!

hey you all gyane’s kukkurs/kukkurnis.. how much are paid by your beloved boss to defame YCL?

  42. I suspected long time back that this will happen one day. What king G could not do is now done by them. No body knows the real intention of maoists.

  43. Tori Laure,

You are true to your name, ignorant about the world and writing without doing any research whatsoever. Who told you New York Times doesn’t broadcast? Read this page and find NYT company owns a FM station and publishes dozens of papers throughout America and the world.

    http://www.nytco.com/company/index.html

And who told you BBC is only TV and radio? The publishing arm of the BBC is the third-largest publisher of consumer magazines in the United Kingdom, you ignorant fella.

Now, don’t confuse Kantipur TV with Kantipur Publications and Kantipur FM. That’s separate. But then if you associate Kantipur MOMO center and Kantipur Hospital with Kantipur Publications that will just prove how ignorant you are.

And about Kantipur reliability. If you don’t trust, don’t read. Who have told you to buy and read the paper? Did Kantipur came to you, plead you to subscribe? Even if that is the case and now that you think you don’t trust it, just cancel the subscription or stop reading.

Your complain against the success of Kantipur is like “oh, that Bill Gates has become so rich and I am so poor. Stop him from earning money and bring him to the standard of mine!”

  44. Tori Laure:

Who said Gyane is a good person. What I am saying is people like murderer Prachande and his Habaldars like you and Gyane should be tied together in one pole and then hanged at Tundikhel in front of the Public because people like you always resort to violence in order to fulfil any demand.

  45. Mr. Nischal Chalise,

For your information I did not call you comrade or a supporter of maoists unless of course you use “Introvert” as a blog name as well. It’s amazing what you pull out of a one line statement I wrote to you regarding the proper way to carry out trade union activity, (that is if you read it at all).
As for the other stuff, you are going way off the topic of what I had said to you. In other words in a very long tangent. So again the proper way to negotiate demands with any management is with the support of majority of the workers and strike if necessary NOT intimidate and threaten to close down the very hand that feeds you by using thugs and intimidation. I hope this time I am crystal clear NON-COMRADE.

  46. yeh buddies, Mr Tori Laure is like his name. Mr laure we also had good wish to maoist. we also hoped that maoist rise in Nepal for new Nepal but it was wrong. Maoist must know kantipur itself a part of new system. kantipur is more important than maoist to brought present change in Nepal. we appreciate kantipur.
worker must know the their second home. if they are against their home to support the maoist, they must punish. If it is possible maoist can give job in their newspaper and they can pay more salary for worker, how easy solution? They can compete with kantipur by publishing new popular newspaper. Mr Jammerkattel is there to kill worker not support them. how were worer making money in kantipur yesterday? how their family was happy? Toaday maoist did nab the worker money and their family happiness. is it supporting of worker? workers should think themselves. mr jammerkattel and maoist donot think about workers. They only think about their family. So worker please belive in reality and make momey and make happy your family. kantipur management must think about their family (worker) too. worker you do not involve maoist affiliated trade union. you open yor own kantipur trade union without maoist affiliation. talk with management which, is right way. by this way, you can make money, protect your right, people can get infromation daily throgh kantiour and; mangement also can make money. get out of maoist from kantipur. you worker are the leaders of kantipur and kantipur is your family where you make money and can make your first family happy.

  47. Editors’ Alliance in its press release says that this kind of suppression on press was not there even during the King’s time.

Now you know, eh! The King was not that bad afterall…
