Some Nepali people think the current national flag of Nepal, triangular and only such in the world, needs to be changed while others think it’s unique and it’s okay. UWB received an article by Prakash Bom about the necessity of the new flag and a photo of “a model flag for the People’s Republic of Nepal” from Shree Shrestha.
I wish the Nepali leaderships had spoken about the need of a new national flag for a new democratic Nepal before the elections of the constituent assembly. I dream of a national flag of the peaceful stars on the horizon of the summit of Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) for new democratic Nepal. The number of peaceful stars will get derived from the restructuring of the state under the Federal Democratic government system.
First of all the people did not choose the current national flag, but accepted for granted as given by the feudal oligarchic regimes to lay the Hindu patriotic values. Many of us are caught up with its unique shape without realizing its connotations with the Hindu nationalism that sustains on the royalist values.
We have decided to change the national anthem (article on English). We have suspended the monarchy. We are about to print our national currency with the pillar of national glory – the Sagarmatha. It is time for new democratic Nepal to think over changing the national flag that can symbolize our true nationalism and the value.
Our nationalism rises up to the pinnacle of the Mount Everest and our national values and pride reach to the glory of Buddha, Ansubarma, Bhirkuti and Arniko. That is how Nepal has been recognized and appreciated in the world. On the glory of our true nationalism and pride we have to begin building our new prosperous democratic Nepal.
Our new democratic national flag must be able to embrace our diverse ethnicity, culture, religions, gender, and inhabitance of different geographical regions with the promise to guarantee our civil liberty and human rights; with the federal democratic electoral system for governing our constituents by the elected representatives from each constituent residence. We must transcend all impediments to create a flag of the nation, which can unit us all to serve the nation.
Current national flag of Nepal:

The national flag of Nepal (left) is the only non-quadrangular national flag, and one of only two non-rectangular official jurisdictional flags in the world (the other is the flag of the American state of Ohio). The flag is a simplified combination of two single pennants that represent, for some, the mountains of Nepal while for others the Hindu flags. The flag was adopted, with the formation of a new constitutional government, on December 16, 1962. The individual pennants had been used for the last two centuries and the double pennant since the 19th century.
The blue border denotes peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautam Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson color is Nepal’s national color, and it indicates the brave spirit of the Nepalese people. The structure of flag has been the topic of great discussions in recent times, especially in the Constituent Assembly, as Maoists have expressed their wish to change the flag saying the triangles denote that Nepal is a Hindu Country. For them, Sun (surya) and Moon (chandra) denote the ancient Hindu rulers Surya Gupta and Chandra Gupta. It has been clear in the past several months (in late 2009) that overwhelming majority of Nepali people support the current flag arguing that the triangles represent Nepal’s world famous mountains and Sun and Moon symbolize eternal Nepal. Indeed, a very very popular song says:
Rato ra chhandra surya jungi nishan hamro
Jiundo ragat sari yo baldo yo shaan hamroJaba samma chhandra surya aakash ma rahanchha
Taba samma hunchha aafnai rato ragat yo hamro[The red flag, with Sun and Moon on it, is symbol of our pride that shines just like the blood that flows in us.]
It’s true that triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The depiction of celestial bodies represents permanence, the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. The moon symbolizes that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolizes fierce resolve.

Dont even Thing to chech This Lovely Flag of nepal
whenever i look the flag of nepal it always reminds me of the chandrabamsi and the suryabamsi rulers that ruled nepal.the red colour reminds the bloody battle that lasted for more than ten years killing thousands innocent nepali.it also reminds that it is the same flag that were used as emblem of the ancient indian states(as seen in ramayan n mahabharat).when i see its shape it reminds the condition of Nepal in world scenerio-as half free state.coz all other nations have their full size but nepali flag being of half of their size symbolizing its dependency in India
so i would support for changing the flag of nepal

Hey Mr. Prakash,
Its a shame to say that you are a nepali. How long have you been staying in USA? I am sure, our flag is unique and pretty fine!

Our flag is fine. Our government is what needs fixing.
??????? ????? ???? ??? ? ????? ????? ??????? ???? ???????? ???? ?? ??? ? ???? ??? ??? “??????” ?????? ?
I love your unique and colourful flag – it is one of the best in the world! I visited Nepal a couple of months ago, and fell in love with the place. I know you have problems, but England has many problems too at the moment. If you change your flag you will forget your history – and also, your flag reminds me of a prayer flag a little – it looks very Himalayan.
I have a Nepali flag from Kathmandu hanging in my bedroom.
Peace and prosperity to Nepal. (One of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen, and I have been to many)
Looks like a Vietnamese Flag. Monarchy or Not you people are still deciding for entire nation with out their consent. Who cares about what you think or what politicians think about the flag.
Why don’t you start caring about the people, the ongoing war, the life beyond Kathmandu, education?? Kicking out Miserable uneducated people from Governmental offices.
First of How could you let the criminal join the government, No matter what they promised they all killed our own people brutally both The Monarchy and the one against them. Peaceful Nature my A** here is a thought for the flag Red with bullet holes, people hung, abducted and a child eating off a garbage .
who is this stupid sirish shrestha,
how he got right to propose flag of new nepal.
it’s nearly similar to china(mao-comrade)flag
only red colour =sign of bidroh ,also with stars as china
instead more three small stars are missing instead of five.
go to hell sirish, you don’t know meaning of our flag,do u call urself nepali.if wann to propose dream flag ppl must accept without comment, write description of each colour, meaning, our falg carries meaning men.
please go through, nepali text book of class-nine
you will come to learn, even 12-curve(teeth)mentoined in our flags sun,and 8-curve(teeth)of our moon which is in our flag, has got meaning
also you will find meaning of blue lines and each colour and what it indicates
do not dare to take it as a joke.
to change a flag.
I think everyone is fan of change but they never think that change is good only if it is possitive ie change if lead new horizon of thinking n doing.
we changed our national anthems but it is not good even now, we further need to chage it ..
But national flag is good enough to reflact nepalese history, present n future .It is the best in the world n even unique that makes us praud too. So plz donot try to change it , otherwise i will fill shy to carry our flag in ny cap and heart. If you wanna change change yourself toward new world and new life.
The only thing that doesn’t change in the world is change itself.
It’s true that Nepal’s flag is unique and each and every color and symbols in the flag have a deeper meaning behind it. It’s even bigger truth that Nepal needs to bring about changes in bigger things like its economy, health and education system and many more things before changing anything else like the flag of Nepal. But I still feel like everyone is being too emotional here.
Cause if we changed our country from the “only Hindu country in the world” to the “non secular” country and if we changed our national anthem then I don’t think changing our flag would be such a bad idea. Of course, we need to wait till Nepal becomes a real democratic country and it needs to be approved by the majority of people. However, I don’t like the flag proposed as a new flag of Nepal in this blog. We need to have a flag with deeper symbolic meanings than just a white star (or sun or whatever it is) in the middle of a red rectangle.
As a child we were taught that Nepal is the country of Buddha, Bhrikuti and Arniko; it’s the land of Mt. Everest, the land of peace, the only Hindu country of the world. Similarly, we were taught that we have the most unique flag of the world, the non-rectangular one. These are the lessons from our early childhood and we will never forget it. I agree with the person who mentioned earlier in the blog that even if our new national anthem is far better and more meaningful than the old one, it’s still hard to recite it as a national anthem. The reason is simple; the song we used to sing every morning in the school at the assembly line is the one that rules our un-conscious brain even today. But that should not and it did not stop us from changing the anthem to a new one. And the important thing is that the new generation is learning this new national anthem and by the time they grow up, this will be the only anthem that will rule the people’s heart and mind. The same thing will be true for our flag. If we change it at the beginning phase of democratic Nepal, we (from this generation) won’t ever be able to accept it as our national flag, but the new generation will. And by the time they grow up, that will be the only flag of Nepal.
While building the New Nepal lets think about the new generation, because it will take years to recover from the damages caused in the past decade and then again years to bring it to a new height.
I love the nepali Flag, the only thing that need to cange is the corrupt government. Dear Mr. Shresta your “new” Flag looks like the Chinese and it stinks.
u r insane dude
u gotta change ur name before u change the flag … i think u shld even go to the mental hospital for the check up
is that the uml sign? or is it a half witted chinese flag? or is it turkish? or is it a flag of a football team? it’s a sad attempt – if you really need to chage the flag please suggest something that is more worthwhile – otherwise it is a waste of space.
besides the current flag is beautiful . so what if it is made by a king – a king did make nepal. do we wipe out history as well, wher is our sense of national pride? Even people from darjeeling dont want our symbols changed as they identify more with it then indian flag and symbols – it gives them nepalese identity.
Let’s draw the raising fist of pracanda .haaaaaaaaaaa!
In that case following things need to be considered?
1. Chaning the geometry of flag? And why?
2. What essentials do we need to add up in the flag and why? Or do we need to wipe off something?
3. Changing the colours and why?
My answers are:
1. Triangular shape is the uniqueness of our flag. Why change it.
2. We need sun and moon both because they demostrate our temperament i.e. hot when required and usually cool like the moon. Why make the flag messy by adding any other things.
3. We have three colors in our flag: red depicts our passion and bravery of Gurkhaz. Blue shouws our patience and white means peace. Now if we add up more colour then our flagz gonna be “Jhilke” so lets not do it.
Conclusion: This flag is Ok> We just need a new Nepal and that’s all.
Question to Nepali People’s Rights Forum:
Dude, are you being satirical or are you serious? You write so strongly, I’m confused. I have not read such strong article from anyone except, say Khagendra Sangraula…
People don’t panic. I’m sure they brought out the topic just to generate concern(or traffic). AS far as I know, there is absolutely no sane and logically-thinking person who can think of changing the flag, save for the Late Dr. Harka Gurung, may his soul rest i peace…
Halla garnay haina hai tyo Nepali People’s Rights Forum wala mitra.
The flag represents Nepal, it represents us We will not tolerate having it changed. Nepal does not need plastic surgery. Remember that !!
what?? now the flag too??? its the most unique and beautiful thing i’ve ever seen…don u dare touch it!
“rato ra chandra surya” …always…
sorry to tell you this ,

we will chnge narayan hati to “”tiangmen squer “” its just matter of time please watch .
the flag is unique dont change it
I don’t know why we have to change the flag. Let it be like that and it has good meaning too and it’s unique. Instead of wasting time on changing flag why don’t we work together now for the developement of our nation and the people of nation. All the other countries samll countries are developing faster then us. Now we have all right to built our own nation in better way.
Change the Flag of NEPAL!!!… man.. khai may b its needed, but for me personally.. i don’t think it sud.. and for surely.. not to wat is given above.. tht looks like a FLAG OF A COMMUNIST country.. i thot we were headin for a demo rep. i ain’t a commie man..!!!
i read some of the Replies.. dint’ she anyone explain the meanin of our flag…
let me try…
THE COLORS
RED – because crimson is the national color
BLUE- denotes peace and harmony
THE MOON… and THE SUN —so tht nepal will live as long as the sun and moon
also MOON – represents the cool hills
and SUN – the hot TARAI (I am from tarai )
the triangles represent the mountains…
the only draw back i think is ….. the triangle shape is also associated with the victory flag for hinduism…..
Nooooo NEedd To Change …..First Change Our Attitud…………………….
after all i like to change the name our country.why not we CHANGE our country as a name of “EVEREST”It seems very sense and we change the better flag later on.think it up..bye
please comment on this variation of the current flag.. remmber nepal must not use a standard rectangular flag, that is to conform to the imperial/capitalist ship merchant banner waivers, forefathers would role in there graves since no1 got a chance to burn many..
what’s wrong with our brothers.
changeing flag doesn’t change things.
we must be united to develop our beautiful country rather than doing nonesense things like changing flages or being supersitious. changing flag don’t change things.
And to be honest our flag is beautiful as the way it is.
I afraid fools like you guys who is trying to earn names by changeing flag will increase the pain we are suffering.
CHANGE IS WHAT WE NEPALI PEOPLE WANTED FOR so if you want to make Nepal a new Nepal we will want to CHANGE. So let us start with our attitude, our thinking, our way of life, our discipline, our stubbornness, our commonsense. If one cannot bring changes in these areas and keep hanging on the same old behavior then how can one expect to build a new Nepal. It would be the same Nepal in different mask. LET US REALLY BUILD A NEW NEPAL. LEAVE THE FLAG ALONE
EDUCATE ALL NEPALI BUT PLEASE TEACH THEM SOME COMMONSENSE AS WELL
CHANGE REQUIRED IN THESE AREA AS WELL
1. CAPITAL OF NEPAL – DANG VALLEY
2. INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – BHAIRAHAWA
3. NAME KATHMANDU AS HERITAGE CITY
God Bless Nepalese people who have nothing but such useless ideas in their vacant mind. Tel ra chamal napayera manchhe ko jyan jana aati sakyo yaha lai chhai FLAG ko chinta chha bro.
Please people of Nepal. i beg of you NOT to change our FLAG!! it is the most beautiful thing that us nepalese have and its unique and the only thing that separates us from rest of the world. Rectangle shape is just boring + the red flag with the star on the top corner is just wayyyy tooo flat. it seems like we are going backwards instead of forward… If it do needs changing, then dont change the triangle shape. After Mt. Everest, it is the only pride that we hv to tell the world tht we are unique in our own way. This is our identity. Without it, Nepal wont b Nepal. it doesnt symbolize royalty, it symbolizes Nepalese peoplez pride. so pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee dont change it~!! I HATE OUR NEW FLAG ;( yuckkkkkkkkkkkk
reply to maowadi dai:
why r u saying that U guys will change Nepal. we gave u votes so that u listen to us nepalese ppl and improve our country.. tyo khoobai leader jastai kura garney hoina hai sathi.. tetikai prachanda gunda lai jitayeko hoina hamile
Nepali rights people forum PLEASE dont concentrate on ur hate for royalist. Instead concentrate on improving tyo sadak ma basne balak balika, concentrate on tyo chapro ma ek chak khana dhau dhau parne nepali ko choro, conentrate on making nepalese pplz lives easier, concentrate on making nepal a beautiful and clean country… bujhis!!
Whoever wrote this is a complete fool……wat nepal needs is change………but not change in the flag or the national animal, color, flower….that’s very funny……we want nepal to be developing not the somalia of asia. The country fractured and destroyed by maiosts has given the opportunity for them to build the nation of their wildest dreams, so instead of breaking ur head to change the unique flag of the world if this person used the same time and energy to give the rebellions some suggestions on how to build nepal that would be great!!!!!!!!start to use ur brain rather than misusing it>if u like the chinese flag so much y don’t u go to china………nepal is in this state because of ppl like this who knows nth except to divide the country…….
I’m a flag guy. I love flags and the history of flags. I found that Nepalese people do not like the old Nepal flag. So I think a new flag design is necessary. I do not think a flag with a hammer and sickle will promote Nepal in the world view. I think the world view is very important for the economic future of any country, because we, all the world on the internet, are paying attention. Just my thoughts, I send my love.
Lets have a new flag with the sickle and hammer and prachandas moustache and paunche. That woild be just right. And if there is room sagarmatha shoved up common Nepalis arses for things to come.
I am not sure why the change of Flag is necessary. What we need changes are the following ~
Everyone one gets food to eat
Everyone has a shelter to cover them
Everyone gets education
Everyone gets equal opportunity based on their hardship…
Let’s build the country … changing flag is not going to build the country and our FLAG is unique!! We should keep it!
Go to ekantipur.com and you’ll see a picture of deprived nepalese’ huts beng burned and right besides it is the news…”Nagarjun Palace for Gyanendra “.
I hate you all. you are intersted in flags more than real problems.
Fak Nepalese
I know changing is development but it doesn’t mean we have to change everything. It is already changed Hindu into secular state,
Royal into republic. Ratna park into jungli park (since they broke down everying including some ancient statues……. you see it in THANKOT too.
Peace state into voilence state. ( if somebody ask you where are you from and if you reply from Nepal, they won’t recognise it but if you say from place where always fight. They will tell you ohhh!!! himalaya country.
Our previous flag is okey and it is unique too……
No more change on existing things.
what I think is changing should be done in development and guskhuri leader ko mind as well as most of the our Nepali people who runs after bad leader and ready to break everything.Salik haru le k bigadeko thiyora uni haru lai.Prithivi Nayan shaha Jas le hamro des aru ko kabjha ma huney bata bachayo.Tes ko bejayte gharney? Kastoo bhudhi yeso garema kasle ramro kam gharchhara? Yohi attitute le garda hami lai yo dhukhha pawnu pareko.
Let discuss about how to build country and run country into right direction.
UWB: the word fake inside parenthesis has been added because this user is not the original Kirat who comments on this site with regular ‘merger’ email address!
………….
unique? my ass, if u fellas ever knew wat is identity is, ever knew your root u guys have never been so blind and hopeless, I am not hindu, I don’t deserve to carry the hindu symbol flag for my pride, nope I dont do that, and I do not also agree that there should be a Kirat Identity flag in future, even if it is more beautiful than the current triangular flag, flag should represent each n every group identity but not one identity and group, I do like the shape n its extra shape of current flag, but does it give u pride? Certainly eigther if u r Hindu or u r blinded, but am not blind, its republic now, and wat Janajati need is to change the flag in a first place or there will be blood in future, I just don’t want that to be.
Yes, and please burn down all the palaces, ministries , durbar squares and any such buildings from feudal past as it does’nt give pride to all these chaps.
Hey get another name!
f**king morons…… all we can do is argue about dividing ourselves. dalits, janajatis, madhesis, bahuns, chhetris…… democrats, royalists, republicans……. hindu, buddhist, christian, muslim……… do we really need to divide ourselves like this??? do we ever feel first that we are NEPALIS above all??? i myself belonging to the so called janajatis believe i am above all a NEPALI. first of all feel that u are a true Nepali, and feel that u really care about Nepal. only then write or say some bulls**t about Nepal. first of change yourselves and then think a 100 times before you think about changing anything else. if you f**kers really cared about Nepal, you would be actively doing some good for our country, not bickering about senseless stuff. i believe our new national anthem is hundred times better that the old national anthem which was nothing more than praise to the f**king royals. i also believe that our national flag is far better than the proposed flag or any other flag in the world. so just shut ur f**king mouths and fingers and work on making our country Nepal a better place. and anyone who has anything to say about my opinions, u can take ur opinions and shove them up ur a**. JAI NEPAL.
hiya: what a great idea! However, i propose we put a red background down (the perinneal fav color), with a gigantic Coke Bottle on the forefront. And by the way, i’d also like: A box of popcorn, and a Dumb and Dumber DVD featured prominently on the left side. And while we are on the topic, why don’t we have a yearly Nepali flag? I mean, each year we could feature a new flavor and new trend of the day? What say you guys–since we seem unable to hold onto a system and each time we get a new party in power we need to change the flag, lets just go all hte way and do it the right way?
Hey… i think we are only looking for superficial change… most importantly its the attitude, the outlook, and the mentality of the people that needs to undergo a drastic change. Our triangular flag is definitely unique and outstanding and well that is what we need to be and show ourselves to the world. Currently, we exist as a failed nation… Hence, its time to worry about bigger things..better lives…better future for us Nepalese…Our flag is our inspiration, motto, and our symbol of beauty. For the love of Mother of God..dont change that flag.
why do we need a flag – its all symbolism like monarchy – we dont need flags lets be the first flagless nation. why do we nations – we are all humans and the earth is for all – thats real democracy. Why do we need visas to travel on our own earth?
hey uwb,
whats a fake kirat – how can you give one kirat the name fake and not the other – it’s hilarious to call anonymous bloggers fake or not – who do u think you are to do that? If the fake or genuine (what a laugh) Kirat want to be genuine then they should jolly well give their real names.
whats wrong with nepal’s old flag, who is this bom man , i want to slap right hard in his both cheeks.
our flag is unique and is very meaningfulnow later on he will probably suggest to change country’s name.
lets make him wear “jutta ko mala” and make him ride in a buffalo and post it on youtube
where is the moon and the color blue which symbolise peace n coolness ??????????????
