Space For Monarchy: Shut Up Mr. Koirala

By Dinesh Wagle
Wagle’s Web Log

So Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala wants to give space to monarchy (king Gyanendra). How do you interpret this ‘kindness’? This is a desperate effort by Koirala to inject the pro-monarchy and pro-feudalism and pro-slavery venom in Nepali peoples’ mind at a time when the whole country is preparing to go for the election of constituent assembly. Koirala should be rejected and discarded. A quick reality check: Until a few weeks ago, democratic political parties were completely sidelined by an autocrat king and people supported the movement initiated by the political forces for the shake of democracy. There was no space, not an inch, for the political parties in royal heydays and the mandate of April revolution was clear: No space whatsoever for the king.

Irony is that Koirala is talking about giving space to Maoists. Koirala is not in a position to GIVE Maoists SPACE. Maoists have CREATED space for themselves over the years and the only concern of Nepali people for now is to adjust THAT space with the rest in society. Let me again stress on the point that Koirala has no right to advocate on behalf of monarchy while he is holding the post of Prime Minister of Nepal. Yes, he can do that as the ‘dictator’ president of Nepali Congress but not as the head of the government of Nepal. The free and fair election of Constituent Assembly will decide the fate of ceremonial monarchy in Nepal. The Prime Minister should be neutral on the issue. Koirala should resign for and then advocate for whatever he likes to see.

Some people think that he successfully led the April revolution so that he has the right to say what he said on Sunday. No. Koirala alone didn’t lead the movement. Plus, the circumstances made the movement successful, not the leadership of Koirala. People really wanted to throw away king from power, they came to the streets and king had to go. Koirala had nothing important to say in that development in his personal capacity. So for the best interest of the country, at this age, Koirala should stop speaking nonsense.

(UWB: Wagle, now in Pokhara, will be heading for Annapurna trek for a week. Man, he also needs a break!)

Even king should be given a space in democracy: PM Koirala

KATHMANDU, Aug 6 – Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said Sunday that all the political forces including the king and the Maoist rebels should be given a proper space in a democratic setup.

Stating that the monarch may get desperate and frustrated if he is not given a space in democracy, PM Koirala said, “To achieve a full-fledged democracy in the country, all the forces should be provided with a platform.”

PM Koirala made the remarks while speaking at a tea party organized at his residence in Baluwatar on the occasion of 40th annual general meeting of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce (FNCCI) and Industries this evening. Koirala, however, admitted that there have been differences surfaced among the political parties regarding “space provision” for monarch in the country. He added that he has moved forward on the grounds of his “four basic principles.”

“My basic principles are: End of autocratic rule, peace and stability in the country, establishment of full-fledged democracy, and independent, sovereign and prosperous Nepal. I will not get deviated from these principles.” He also said that being a prime minister, he holds the responsibility of bringing even the “non-democratic forces” within a democratic constitutional framework.

“I am trying to accomplish my duty. Even if I fail to complete my duty, the mission won’t. It would be a failure of an individual — G.P. Koirala. But if I succeed, a message will go to the international community and terrorists all over the world setting an example that a peaceful solution can be achieved through cordial talks.” ekantipur

Dr Bhattarai cautions of another struggle if peace talks breached

KATHMANDU, Aug 7 – Maoist leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai said on Monday that Prime Minister Girija P Koirala’s comments a day earlier on giving space to king would invite some hindrances to the ongoing peace talks.

Dr Bhattrai said so before the bigwigs of Nepal’s commerce and industrial fraternity who were gathered here in the capital on the occasion of 40th annual general meeting (AGM) of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).

Prime Minister Koirala had, on Sunday, made his opinion public regarding the monarch saying that even he should be given a space in democracy.

Giving a gesture of warning of third people’s movement in the country, Dr Bhattarai said that if the government and the parties kept on humming the one-sided monotonous tune of “weapon lay-down” by the Maoists without even trying to enter into the preliminaries of peace talks, it is inevitable that the peace process would take a backseat.

“All of you present here (industrialists and businessmen) have wished for a lasting peace in the country. My statements don’t mean that if the peace talks don’t succeed, the country would again head towards the war. You don’t need to tame any kind of confusions here,” he explained adding, “Our chairman Prachanda too has pledged time and again that we would not go back to jungle again. Even if we have to carry on our struggle, we will do that here in the capital and cities. We will struggle peacefully.”

Maoist supremo Prachanda was earlier scheduled to address the second and concluding day of FNCCI’s AGM but instead of him, number two in the Maoists’ “chain-of-command”, Dr Baburam Bhattarai addressed the meeting.

Dr Bhattrai said, “If they (government and the parties) breach the peace talks, if they stick to the old notion of preserving “royal army” and king, we would detach ourselves from the peace talks and continue our struggle right here in the city but peacefully.”

Cautioning another big movement if things didn’t go as per the accords, Dr Bhattrai said, “We would form another “front” — “republican front” — comprising people of Nepal that would bring another enormous change which would not only sweep monarchy but also all forces who support monarchy.”

Reiterating that there would not be another conflict again, he also made clear that it should not spread the message that the Maoists have lost their will and power. “We are not tired, we have not lost,” said Bhattrai adding, “People of Nepal (from rural areas) have already sacrificed for the betterment of the country. Now it’s your turn (people from urban and city areas, including capital) to show the same spirit to bring a massive and positive change in the country.” ekantipurblockquote>

Frankly I think some people here need to get a life. I am no big fan of Wagle and his damn moderation but still this is his blog and he can rant and rave as he pleases. No one is putting a gun to anyone’s head and telling them to come here. This is so typical Nepali mentality – given an opportunity never let up the chance to personally attack someone. I agree Wagle needs some hate mail for his moderation policy but people should stop attacking his personal views/beliefs etc. whatever they might be. Even if he is a Maoist! Let’s attack his logic and his idiotic policies…

that news was disclosed by maoists leader at the AGM of FNCCI. but this news did not appeared in Kantipur, and it did not surprised me at all. this news paper know how not to make a news. after all this news paper has a hidden agenda.

It is ridiculous that the royalists are here to teach the meaning of democracy. Still you guys come out of your hide and try to find what the people really want. There should not be given any space for a country lootter. For these Mandalays all are Maoists who wants Nepal to be a Republican country. It is simple because Gyanendra is their God, Father everything. But Dinesh G, it is clear that most of the people do not want monarchy and I am sure it will come to an end. Now G.P. or anyone can not carry it. They have now became outdated who wants to give space Monarchy in any forms. bhotebahun or bahunbhote

Reading the earlier comments, I have decided to put my synoname as bhotehahun or bahunbhote. I really feel that majority of Nepal’s problems are deeply rooted in the caste system. One of my friend argued with me that why maoists if at all got popularity it is due to their action of trying to remove caste system. Many male bahun Maoists have married with lower caste women as an example. I equally think that this strategy perhaps is a their ploy to get the popularity among the lower caste masses. How to remove the barrier of castism needs something to debate and go for action.

Bhattarai talks about a third peoples movement but “peacefully” – yeah right! This sort of firebrand talk does nothing for reconciliation and to talk politics in a gathering of the business community instead of outlining their economic agenda does about zilch to give anyone worth their salt any confidence and trust for the maoists. People should make no mistake – these people WILL nationalise all education institutions taking us back to the communist stone age education with hail to Prachanda recited every morning, they will not tolerate any foreign investment – this is what they mean by “national investment”, which could also mean nationalisation of or at least heavy interference in industries from their part. Their ultimate goal make no mistake is first to kick the monarchy out (this we know) and next to kick out any from of multiparty democracy and the parties affiliated with such a system (this they pretend otherwise) – they are going step by step.
This is the moment for all of us Nepalis not only the parties to stand strong and keep stating the bottom line – No more arms for the maoists – lay it down! This is the only way to ensure democracy. I get amazed that people keep harping about democracy, but do not understand that the maoists have nothing to do with the concept. They are extremists with outdated and misinterpreted communists views which have no basis in the context of Nepal and definitely no basis in the context of the world as it stands today in the 21st century. We should all rememeber that there has not been one communist regime of such a nature that has worked and that too in resource rich countries leave alone poor ones like ours, infact any such regimes have been a more painful experience for the common people even compared to whatever regime was toppled before they came about.
The maoist grass roots supporters and especially the militia are made up of very young and hot blooded people with little or no education who have been swayed into an immediate sense of power through the use of arms – I doubt anyone in their sane mind would want people like these to be running this country. The maoists leadership made up of somewhat educated people like Prachanda and Baburam seem to have little influence over them these days anyway, and if they are let in further, I doubt they will have much control of them after that, as their dinosaur policies will definitely be flops, you do not need a phd to know this. I think the ones who need to be sent to the aryaghat are Baburam and Prachanda and their archaic ideologies. Baburam suggested the same for monarchy, but he fails to realise that the monarchy advocated is a ceromonial one, this is new for Nepal, which I am afraid to tell Bhattarai is a much more successful system all over the world then any communist system especially the Prachanda path type.

It appears that this group of bloggers survive on some fancy faraway from real life of Nepal. This is obvious in a country where there is so much difference in the level of education from Kathmandu and rest of the country. Go and see people suffering from lack of food in Mugu, Bajura, Kalikot. There were no rains for the past 8 years in selected pockets of mid and far-west Nepal. These ‘rain shadows’ have acute food shortage and even wild plants people were surviving is out of stock. Going to India for labor work, selling their household goods, ornaments and utensils or bartering with food is common coping mechanism. The irony is even if one has money, you can not buy anything there. There has been no road yet. In Kathmandu perhaps many of these bloggers go to work in their personal car and yet complain about their life. The meaning of Kathmandu, that is so much part of yourself, makes no sense to you if you go west beyond Rukum district.

If you really care or think of people, the human beings – the fellow countrymen somebody who is not you, or not related to you, then you must be genuinely considering for alternative approach to governance in Nepal. People should be cared, like a father should care the family members. That is not possible if the current system of state mechanism continues. GP can make his statements but not at the cost of missing that entire opportunity people are aiming at with the current peace process.

The only way to disarm the Maoists is to defeat them militarily. The only way to free elections is to disarm the Maoists. The Maoists believe they have won. As soon as the think otherwise, the fighting will begin again. We must support our army now.

Every populace movement needs an ‘enemy’, the grander and vile they are, better for the cause. Undoubtedly, so has been the case in Maoist movement in Nepal, of all their rhetoric, usurping the royal tops the chart.

Epics like ‘Ramayan’ and ‘Mahabharat’ are not grand on the merits of their values; they are so just because, the adversaries’ looks insurmountable and erstwhile that makes the victories more romantic. And we can’t get enough of them, watching them on TV years after years.

Jungle dwelling ‘Baboon Ram Bhattarai’, understand this public psychic better than anyone else. Farmers tilling the fields of the landlords do not understand the psycho babbles of ‘Marx’, ‘Engle’ or for that matter ‘Nietzsche’. What they always wanted was simple– own the land they till, but the Maoist have them conditioned to believe that; this can be achieved, when the ‘Narayanhiti’ in yonder and falls, just like slaying of 10 heads ‘Rawan’. Pretty romantic idea, but the flipside of this romanticism is that, it puts them (Babu and gang) on the top of the food chain, and they are almost there.

And I always use to wonder, watching ‘Mahabharat’ and ‘Ramayan’, what happened to those countless soldiers, who often got trampled my elephants, if not eaten by huge giants, or perforated by arrows? What did they get at the end of the day? Ram got his wife back and Pandav got their kingdom back.

Out of all people, we ‘Nepali’ should have understood ‘this’, watching/reading them for eons.

Lest, I emerge as a royalist, which often so happens then not these days, that there is no room for a differing opinion. Yes!!! Indeed!!! An archaic and completely useless institution like ‘King’ should be razed. But espousing such an idea would be hopelessly romantic at this point.

Degree of your abhorrence/detest towards the ‘palace’ is not going to change the ground reality that they are still the power house in the political structure, with the whole army under them and with special interest groups at the higher ups. I would love to see the royals banished to hinterland, but that would create power vacuum. And everyone knows that ‘Prachande’ the hyena is waiting on the hills, salivating just for this day.

So at best, I can describe, the present political situation, is like ‘Chak Ko Pillo’, (apologize for the lack of more apt analogy). One just can’t do anything but just wish that it goes away. And which I doubt would peter away silently, until it turns into gangrene and with the vermin of likes ‘GPK’ and ‘Makune’ we are heading their soon.

So, be ready to be a cripple, call it my pessimism. At the end of the day, we are just like those countless foot soldiers of ‘Ramayan/Mahabharat’.
