So Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala wants to give space to monarchy (king Gyanendra). How do you interpret this ‘kindness’? This is a desperate effort by Koirala to inject the pro-monarchy and pro-feudalism and pro-slavery venom in Nepali peoples’ mind at a time when the whole country is preparing to go for the election of constituent assembly. Koirala should be rejected and discarded. A quick reality check: Until a few weeks ago, democratic political parties were completely sidelined by an autocrat king and people supported the movement initiated by the political forces for the shake of democracy. There was no space, not an inch, for the political parties in royal heydays and the mandate of April revolution was clear: No space whatsoever for the king.
Irony is that Koirala is talking about giving space to Maoists. Koirala is not in a position to GIVE Maoists SPACE. Maoists have CREATED space for themselves over the years and the only concern of Nepali people for now is to adjust THAT space with the rest in society. Let me again stress on the point that Koirala has no right to advocate on behalf of monarchy while he is holding the post of Prime Minister of Nepal. Yes, he can do that as the ‘dictator’ president of Nepali Congress but not as the head of the government of Nepal. The free and fair election of Constituent Assembly will decide the fate of ceremonial monarchy in Nepal. The Prime Minister should be neutral on the issue. Koirala should resign for and then advocate for whatever he likes to see.
Some people think that he successfully led the April revolution so that he has the right to say what he said on Sunday. No. Koirala alone didn’t lead the movement. Plus, the circumstances made the movement successful, not the leadership of Koirala. People really wanted to throw away king from power, they came to the streets and king had to go. Koirala had nothing important to say in that development in his personal capacity. So for the best interest of the country, at this age, Koirala should stop speaking nonsense.
(UWB: Wagle, now in Pokhara, will be heading for Annapurna trek for a week. Man, he also needs a break!)
Even king should be given a space in democracy: PM Koirala
KATHMANDU, Aug 6 – Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said Sunday that all the political forces including the king and the Maoist rebels should be given a proper space in a democratic setup.
Stating that the monarch may get desperate and frustrated if he is not given a space in democracy, PM Koirala said, “To achieve a full-fledged democracy in the country, all the forces should be provided with a platform.”
PM Koirala made the remarks while speaking at a tea party organized at his residence in Baluwatar on the occasion of 40th annual general meeting of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce (FNCCI) and Industries this evening. Koirala, however, admitted that there have been differences surfaced among the political parties regarding “space provision” for monarch in the country. He added that he has moved forward on the grounds of his “four basic principles.”
“My basic principles are: End of autocratic rule, peace and stability in the country, establishment of full-fledged democracy, and independent, sovereign and prosperous Nepal. I will not get deviated from these principles.” He also said that being a prime minister, he holds the responsibility of bringing even the “non-democratic forces” within a democratic constitutional framework.
“I am trying to accomplish my duty. Even if I fail to complete my duty, the mission won’t. It would be a failure of an individual — G.P. Koirala. But if I succeed, a message will go to the international community and terrorists all over the world setting an example that a peaceful solution can be achieved through cordial talks.” ekantipur
Dr Bhattarai cautions of another struggle if peace talks breached
KATHMANDU, Aug 7 – Maoist leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai said on Monday that Prime Minister Girija P Koirala’s comments a day earlier on giving space to king would invite some hindrances to the ongoing peace talks.
Dr Bhattrai said so before the bigwigs of Nepal’s commerce and industrial fraternity who were gathered here in the capital on the occasion of 40th annual general meeting (AGM) of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
Prime Minister Koirala had, on Sunday, made his opinion public regarding the monarch saying that even he should be given a space in democracy.
Giving a gesture of warning of third people’s movement in the country, Dr Bhattarai said that if the government and the parties kept on humming the one-sided monotonous tune of “weapon lay-down” by the Maoists without even trying to enter into the preliminaries of peace talks, it is inevitable that the peace process would take a backseat.
“All of you present here (industrialists and businessmen) have wished for a lasting peace in the country. My statements don’t mean that if the peace talks don’t succeed, the country would again head towards the war. You don’t need to tame any kind of confusions here,” he explained adding, “Our chairman Prachanda too has pledged time and again that we would not go back to jungle again. Even if we have to carry on our struggle, we will do that here in the capital and cities. We will struggle peacefully.”
Maoist supremo Prachanda was earlier scheduled to address the second and concluding day of FNCCI’s AGM but instead of him, number two in the Maoists’ “chain-of-command”, Dr Baburam Bhattarai addressed the meeting.
Dr Bhattrai said, “If they (government and the parties) breach the peace talks, if they stick to the old notion of preserving “royal army” and king, we would detach ourselves from the peace talks and continue our struggle right here in the city but peacefully.”
Cautioning another big movement if things didn’t go as per the accords, Dr Bhattrai said, “We would form another “front” — “republican front” — comprising people of Nepal that would bring another enormous change which would not only sweep monarchy but also all forces who support monarchy.”
Reiterating that there would not be another conflict again, he also made clear that it should not spread the message that the Maoists have lost their will and power. “We are not tired, we have not lost,” said Bhattrai adding, “People of Nepal (from rural areas) have already sacrificed for the betterment of the country. Now it’s your turn (people from urban and city areas, including capital) to show the same spirit to bring a massive and positive change in the country.” ekantipurblockquote>

KING is symbolic constitutional head. When we are pointing finger at King, we must not forget that the present political turmoil was created single handedly by those corrupt political parties hungry for power and by the Maoist terrorists who took the full advantage of the time to cast the veil of terror by killing innocent civilians, security personnel, blowing up schools, hospitals, government establishment etc. They have definitely succeeded to bring the whole country under her knees. These mayhem have been going on unabated in an unprecedented level while whole world became the silent spectator of such butchery with an occasional BBC’s trashy reporting of the despotic Hindu King rather than any credible condemnation. (The BBC was more interested in maligning the Nepalese Hindu customs by printing the story of 8 year old Girl’s trauma during Kumari Pooja rather than killings of the innocent by the Maoist). The outcome was horrible as we see now. The poorest of the poor people of Nepal left with no earnings, no livelihood or any shelter. The children were forced to join the Maoist or the family faces the dire consequences. The struggling economy further faltered. All residential and non residential businesses started either shutting down or left the country for good. When this horrible crisis was continuing for a decade long, what happened then to Wagle? Where those political whores who are now shedding crocodiles tears and shouting”Prajatantra ko Mirthu” death of Democracy now? Even secretly meeting in India for Madame Sonia’s blessings rather than to find any credible political solution working with the King. When His majesty the King stepped in to stop further spiral of innocent civilian deaths, , destruction of public properties, these greedy political leaders do not hesitate even to join hands with those Maoist whose hands have been drenched with civilian innocent blood. I think this King did not have any other choice but to put his own life in the line of fire to put a stop to this politically explosive situation. And He did under extreme difficult political situation when most of the powerful Western countries and our neighbor India ridiculed HIS action as undemocratic and autocratic arrogance even though, India needed to play more constructive role helping His majesty to bring normalcy in the region rather than to Welcome Maoist Terrorist as Red Carpet Welcome “State Guest” the Maoist terrorist leader for an audience and keep issuing threat to stop supplying arms to RNA when the arm supply was very necessary in combating Maoist terrorism. In order to save the dignity of our Nation, His Majesty has no other alternative but to seek arms to China or even from Pakistan.
It is a pity that we always see things through the western eyes rather than to have our own way of looking things. Even the media those who sale their editorials for few hundred bucks, act as if their only interest is to protect the Western values and interest rather than our’s (Nepal). When the Maoist insurgency started, our corrupt political leaders never paid any attention even though many of our treasure were destroyed one by one. So did the Media, where have you been Wagele that time? Just one of the major incident that happened few years back, the Maoist blew one of Asia’s biggest Rice factory in Rajapur, Bardia when many poor people lost their livelihoods in that locality and Nepal lost huge foreign exchange earnings through exporting quality rice. These type of terrorist act against our Nation is still continuing.Few Recent carnage by the Maoist. The latest act of Maoist terrorism and what exactly these Swines are trying to achieve? Is these are their political motto in destroying everything until Nepal reaches the stone age? How about this mayhem never even qualified for our learned civil societies memebers? Unfortunately, we only learned to bark when our Western masters told us that “Democracy is in danger”, the little King is the root of all evils, even though HE is entitled to govern the country under exceptional condition as permitted by the Nepal’s constitution.
Probably you should also know, Wagle, how the Rana regime gained power acting as the puppet of the British East India Company. In those Primitive days with a weak governing system, the RANAS put an iron clad governance on his power and kept His Majesty almost under house arrest blocking all outside connection. Finally, the present King, Gyanendra’s grandfather, His majesty King Tribhuvan, revolted openly against the Rana regime. The despotic RANA then tried to kill King Tribhuban, who ultimately took shelter to the Indian embassy in Kathmandu to save his life, and later fled to India. Later on, with the help of the Indian government, his majesty King Tribhuvan returned back to Nepal overthrowing the RANA regime, hence helping to sow the seeds of PRAJATANTRA, the beginning of present democratic norms. In BS 2007 Falgun 7, Tanka Prasad Acharaya, an ordinary citizen, became the Prime Minister of Nepal with the help of His Majesty King Tribhuban. History tells us the Nepal’s Royal had always given importance to the National interest and the people’s welfare of Nepal above their own self interest unlike the corrupt political parties.
Probably you might think I am a devout supporter of His Majestic King Gyanandra or the Royals. I am not. What I am trying to understand from many like minded people and various interactions that whether it is of any use to ABOLISH The King’s NOW, when no body will argue, His all actions are not completely out of controversy. But what possible solutions we have right now to save our country. Protesting and FUELING mAOIST tERRORIST probably will not fetch any viable solution for such a huge political and economic mess that has been piled up because of decade old corrupt political miss- governance. I think we should give PLACE FOR kING the benefit of doubt and to give HIM a fair chance to LIVE THE COUNTRY and to see whether he cOULD BE NEED ANY DAY TO UNITED BROKEN nEPAL.
Terrorist decade old campaign of terror over the innocent civilians was overlooked by the inept democratic forces and the media. While such mayhem and barbaric onslaught was continuing for a while those democratically elected leaders were watching helplessly and blaming each other.

Koirala should be discarded, certainly, but not for trying to include the King in any constitution. Two things: consider the timing of the announcement and remember Koirala’s behavior in the past.
Funny how ol’ Babu made the about-face and included the King, wasn’t it? Not if you consider that the gesture came immediately on the heels of Koirala’s meeting with Prachanda. Guess what? They weren’t talking about laying down arms for any constituent assembly; as those peacocks in the UN would have us all believe. Nope, Prachanda told Koirala that he absolutely would not be treated like a second-class party in any new government—a-la the Maoist’s first attempt at “fitting in” to Girija’s government back in the early 1990’s. Girija still talks down to Prachanda and Prachanda’s got a big inferiority complex that’s about to boil over.
Prachanda wants power, wants influence and threatened Girija with a big return to violence if he didn’t get it. He’s already made overtones that he plans a “wave of republicanism” or some such nonsense if he doesn’t get his way. We’ve anticipated a collapse in the peace-talks for months now, over at blogdai, so this is no surprise.
You guys here better get over your phony “democracy” romantic notions about dragging the King through the streets or whatever, and start to think. Koirala and his mob are the same corrupt, inept and frighteningly arrogant bunch they were before your little revolution. They are the guys that forced the King’s takeover, allowed the Maoists to flourish, and facilitated the chaos we see today in Nepal. Nothing about their movement showed any regard for giving equal representation to all Nepalis. These guys haven’t held an election in 8 years so how could they dare claim a mandate when they’ve never bother to sample anyone through elections? With a new Nepali Times survey out saying that some 60% of Nepalis are unaware of a constituent assembly election or when and if it will happen, I rest my case. “People’s movement,” indeed…
No, Koirala’s standard procedure is to make a deal with the devil—any devil—that would keep him in power. He smooched-up to Prachanda when the King took over and rendered the party structure irrelevant; now he’s letting the King back in the picture to save his hide again.
Prachanda’s meeting made Babu want to immediately cover his bases. Why? Because the parties are losing public trust by the minute with their same-as-usual dithering and they know that simply taking the army away from the King won’t guarantee a change in loyalty or service. Basically, the parties are fading into obscurity and Koirala is looking for a center of power to fall back on and keep himself relevant.
This King and the army are alive and well, I’m aftraid. Wishing on delusions of the French Revolution won’t change that. I personally don’t care for the man and his butchering son, but he still enjoys wide support from Nepalis just because he represents the closest thing to national unity anyone in Nepal can experience.
Wake up and think. Nepal will only be saved when there is a fair and workable compromise between Maoist, Party and King. Leave the fantasies to writers of prose. Use your minds and save Nepal while you still are able.

I just turned out to be Wagle’s fan. Well said wagle. We need Gagan Thapa and Wagle for new Nepal
The maoists have clearly said that they attacked Thankot, KTM and did other activities at the behest of the SPA. The same parties who were fighting a war with them and terming them terrorists before the royal takeover. I wonder what the family of the people who lost their lives in these SPA endorsed attacks must feel? I wonder if there is any commission that will investigate this? Are these the people we want leading out nation? The same people who endorses and encourages killings and attacks from their prior enemies who were labelled terrorists by themselves and also India and the U.S. at their behest? What have we become -a nation run by people who would endorse attacks on the same security forces that served them!!!
we will fight for all the fking unjustice done to us by bahuns……
kirat liberation army rules……………
People have always wondered how come our security forces could’nt quite get a handle over the maoists. Now we have our answer – when party leaders themselves have been involved in informing the maoists and helping them make their operations a success what can one expect? These parties have their people in all walks of life and used them to inform on operations. And now we can be quite certain that this was not just a practice during the royal regime but also before, when one or the other of these parties were not in power. This is why we never saw any party leaders come to any harm from the barrell of the maoist gun, only their grassroots cadres did, who probably truly believed in what their duties were. These leaders are as much to blame as the maoists for the genocide. Which commission is going to investigate this I wonder?
Yes it is a Wagle blog, but, he presents this blog as a journalist & not as a private citizen. His blog became famous due to the Jan Andolan II where he espoused democratic ideals & freedom. Thus the only reason for many hits.
I am wondering whether DW will be able to even have a blog under Maoists regime for whom he misguidedly appreciates. No wonder the man needs to take a vacation… Go chill out. You need a break my man. Think before you rant & rave…
Remember freedom of speech does not guarantee your right to yell fire in a crowded theatre. Wagle, along with your rights as a citizen, comes your duties.
It is time for to go outside your house, pick up some trash & take to the trash bin. Stop peeing on the sidewalk for a change…
Let’s start with a Citizen of One… (and hopefully multiply exponentially.)

Reminder to Wagle, “lest we forget”:
“Initially, there was some genuine popular support for the Maoists.
However, such feelings were quickly overshadowed by the violence, brutality, intolerance, ruthlessness and even banditry that became the hallmark of the Maoist insurgency in later years.
Far from being protectors of people’s human rights, the Maoists became the most feared abusers of civil liberties. That is why so many ordinary people, not just the political parties and the international community, are demanding the disarmament of the Maoists before they are invited to join an interim government, and before elections are held for the Constituent Assembly.
The destruction of infrastructure, interruption of basic services, breakdown of the rule of law and civil administration, restrictions on the work of NGOs and civil society organizations imposed by the Maoists have seriously affected the well-being of ordinary, poor people far more than the rich and the privileged.
Perhaps the worst – and lasting impact of the Maoist insurgency has been in two areas:
1) A culture of violence, militarization and impunity that is going to haunt Nepal for a long time to come, and
2) Their violation of children’s rights and the terrible impact on the education of children.
As someone working for UNICEF, I am acutely aware of the devastating impact that the Maoist insurgency has inflicted on Nepal’s children.
All of Nepal’s political groupings abuse children in schools. Political parties organize student unions and teachers’ unions and try to mobilize them for their political agenda. They call for strikes, demonstrations and frequent closure of schools in support of their political demands, which have little to do with educational issues.
The royal government used schools, students and teachers to glorify the King and to drum up support for the monarchy.
But the Maoists have been the worst abusers of school children and teachers in support of their revolution. The Maoists deliberately targeted schools and the education system as a prime instrument for their “people’s war”.
Some of the tactics used by the CPN (Maoist) affiliated ANNISU-R to force closure of schools amount to terrorizing students, teachers and parents, and are totally inappropriate for a students’ union.
The Maoists routinely abducted students and teachers and marched them off to indoctrination camps. Teachers and parents who did not heed the Maoists’ diktat were severely punished and even killed. Schools that did not follow their orders were sometimes bombed and destroyed.
The Maoists have been particularly vicious against private schools, thus depriving thousands of students of already meager educational opportunity. Contrary to the Maoists’ intentions, the main victims of their anti-private school policies are the children of lower-middle class families in rural areas, as the rich and privileged can afford and do send their children to private schools in Kathmandu, India and abroad.
Many neutral and respectable organizations, national as well as international, including UNICEF, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and national human rights NGOs have repeatedly pointed out that these actions of the Maoists are a flagrant violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Geneva Conventions to which the Maoists profess their allegiance.
The Security Council of the United Nations has listed the CPN (Maoist) as a non-State actor guilty of recruiting child soldiers and using children in armed conflict. The European Union too has condemned CPN (Maoist)’s systematic and continued violations of human rights, especially their use of child soldiers and abduction and indoctrination of school children.
When confronted with such evidence and asked to rectify their behaviour, the Maoists come up with lame excuses, including pointing out similar violations by the Royal Nepalese Army.
However, two wrongs do not make a right. If the Maoists wish to be trusted and respected by the people of Nepal and the international community, they must unequivocally desist from committing and condoning such actions rather than coming up with excuses or occasional apologies.”
indeed tested successfully. hehehe
Wagleji,
You state:
“This is a desperate effort by Koirala to inject the pro-monarchy and pro-feudalism and pro-slavery venom in Nepali peoples’ mind at a time when the whole country is preparing to go for the election of constituent assembly.”
Really, but extensive surveys show that the people of Nepal either have’nt heard about CA or don’t know what it means. I believe 60% fall into these categories. And the parties and the maoists want it done in April! That’s 8 months from now! When is the government planning to provide extensive detail and educate the people and form neutral and international monitoring teams to be placed all over the country in what could be a CA commisssion permanently housed and in mobile units to answer questions regarding the CA? Or will the details be announced in monotonous Sanskritik Nepali which most can’t understand the night before the election date????
Wagle you say that;
“There was no space, not an inch, for the political parties in royal heydays and the mandate of April revolution was clear: No space whatsoever for the king.”
I may be wrong, but whatever the inefficiencies of the royal government, did’nt the King publically state and invite the parties to take part in municipal and then general elections???? Yeah, you may cry wolf and say it was a farce etc. but we will never really know will we? – It is all hypothesis and hyperbole. With the goings on of the parties and the maoists today who knows who has what intentions? No one can be trusted I’m afraid.
But please do not again say that not an inch of space was given to the parties, they could have gone for not only municipal but general elections, instead of boycotting it with the help of the maoists who they already had made a deal with. In hind sight I wonder if that was so clever on the part of the parties?
Of course the maoists would be trying to obstruct the elections and any form of multi- party democratic government, but that is what they are doing today as well. It is pathetic of Baburam Bhattarai to say that because the PM made the statement about giving space to everyone it could derail the peace process – this is not mentioned in any point agreement or code of conduct, (even Prachanda said in Baluwatar people can have their own ideas and the CA will decide), HOWEVER what is in the code of conduct are many of the things that the maoists are violating left, right and centre – if anything can derail the peace process it is definitely the violations on the part of Baburam’s maoists. But who is telling this bugger off in public with his holier than thou attitude???? This too I wonder, and why don’t people like you tell him off like you so easily do to GPK???
Sl, is absolutely right. SPA had done the mistake about steps of political startegies, specially congress (more specially GPK). Now GPK himself has been threatened not only by maoist but by Bamdev and gang and so-called civil societies. He has been not only threatened about his position but even implemening hook or crook strategies. This is very dangerous situation to democracy and future of Nepal. It shows Gunda-Raj in the country.
I forgot Wagle, I see you’re off on a trek, so you would’nt want to upset any gun wielding maoists just before you’re off on your jaunt. Pictures of the journo beheaded with hands tied behind his back to a tree flash through my mind.
However, when you get some fresh mountain air into your skull, hopefully you will be thinking about using more of your balls (I mean pen).
Kina moderate gari rahanu paryo yo free speech ko jamanama!!!!!!!!!!! Loktantra aayeko taha chaina ki kyaho brother haru!!!! Don’t diaplay the typical congressi attitude !
100% congressi ji, I think we echo the same feelings. we are not interested with Girija rather clean Democracy………we hope that republican set up be there.
Amik Sherchan threaten to resign from the post. yet another dumb bhote. prachanda has choosen a typical puppet for his quota.
Stop posting racist comments Sharma ji. Tauko jholama, jyan kholama holani natra!
I think that giriza is an experienced guy. He knows more than today’s hot-headed youth. Whatever his personal opinion, he always has stood by the line that he is ready to accept the mass verdict of the people.
People power should be channeled in the right direction. Spitting fire against the king or giriza is not helpful. Cursing is not helpful, it’s a waste of time.
Let the people decide which means not only the verdict of bloggers or journalists but of the whole Nepali mass.
baburam’s perception of arm management mean to give(surrender?) their arms to the King or to give it to Nepali Army, both institution they dont trust. in that case maoists should give up arms to there beloved commie Yachuri for management and let him manage it somewhere Bihar or UP. that way we can have a peaceful and fearless CA election.
communism and sarcasm does not go along. you commie sympthizer.
Cursing and saying ” saley bhatey” all the time is not going to build up the country. We needs hard work, dedication and discipline.
yaddhuram, before taking your typical matawali/maobadi threat seriously may i ask you which part of my post did you find racist?

u made solid argument, Yes King has also right to remail royal palace. yes he had done so much work out to wipe out Maoist terrorist but moron corrrupts politicians, so called right groups are main responsible bring country under her knees.
I agree with mr. wagle.
Let the CA finalize issue.
Girija, being in the seat of PM, cannot pop up the CA election in favour of Monarchy.
I think there needs a third jana aandolan but peaceful to sort out all these issues with immedaite effect.
it’s awakard to read non sense comments for wagle from the most educated persons. The arguements can be done in a proper way but not writing a non sense words.
USE YOUR SENSE WHILE YOU COMMENT ON ANYONE, PLS.
What’s this chap above me saying?!?!?!?!?
Well, with or without the king, we need efficient leaders to run the country. If we had even one efficient and competent prime minister in the last decade we would have been prosperous even with the king. King did not have and will not have administrative powers to actually affect the development of Nepal. Unless of course the politicians are inefficient and corrupt. But if they are going to be the bunch of fools they have been for the past 15 years, we do not need a king to destroy or overtake this country.
Quote fron Baburam “I think the SPA made a 12 point understanding with us just to foil the municipal elections”. Meaning they could have taken part in it but their only agenda was to make the royal government fail at any cost. The same government which had an aim to hand back power to the parties by 2007. The same government which was denied aid and any form of help from the international community at the behest of the SPA (even the right of every UN member nation to receive a loan from the World Bank was denied through delaying tactics by the Bank officials), which are the causes of an almost collapse of the economy. Hats off to the govt. for holding things together even on a shoestring with the SPAM in tow doing everything in their power to make things even worse. And these destructive mentality people are the ones we are putting our entire faith on to lead our nation in to peace and prosperity. Ram! Ram!
Well there are also claims by Dr. Bhattarai that the Moaists were attacking security personnel on the behest of the SPA during the election period. Which also suggests that probably the International community was aware of this fact too and may be they aided the maoists to attack the security forces. Also that could be the reason why Mr. Ian Martin could not find any abusses of human rights in the maoist attack of thankot police post where many unarmed policemen were killed
I don’t believe Wagleji is a maoist or hardcore communist! If so, he would have censored most of the scraps we are seeing here now.
As for Girija’s statement, I really appreciate for what he said. It is his great-heartedness that he prefers to accomodate all, including monarchy. This country belongs to all, not a single party or group.
Waglejee,
Please manage to censor racist and dirty worded comments! It is enough!
The Maoist strategy is to have a marriage of convenience with the SPA to eliminate the king, and then eliminate the SPA. Their plan is working perfectly so far.
Now all of the royalists come out of the woodwork.
