Down with Autocracy: Protesters in Baneshor

5:45 pm Update

I am just back from the Baneshor area. People in unprecedented numbers have thronged in the streets. Army’s mini-tanks are plying in the street. People are walking in the streets defying curfew while the security personnel have turned into mere spectators. This is an utter failure of the state and a near-victory of people’s power. King is rumored to address at 7 pm. Every one is curious about what a beleaguered monarch has to say.

At 3:30 pm, around five thousand protesters defied curfew here in Tinkune. These protesters were a part of large mass of around fifty thousand in Baneshor. They arrived from Koteshor area and entered the main road bypassing a police beat in Tinkune. Few army men were stationed near Koteshor. We all Kantipur staffs either reached there or watched from windows, rooftops. It was a peaceful protest. But, leaders like Ram Kumari Jhakri were finding hard to convince the mass. After 10 minutes, another security enforcement arrived. But, as the mass was only chanting slogans, carrying banners and branches of trees, the forerunners were able to divert the mass towards alley leading them to Koteshor.

Here at UP Policlinic, people sprinkled water to the protesters. They looked jovial, were enthusiastic and very disciplined. The leaders were requesting them not to pelt stones. For a while, the area got tense, but it was soon over. Yesterdy’s massacre in Kalanki has given an impetus to fight for their rights. As I write this at 4:30, I can hear protesters wistling, yelling and cheering.

Protesters have lined up from Kalanki to Sanepa in Ring Road. This mass is estimated to be 2 lakhs. Similarly, according to co-blogger Saroj Raj Adhikari, people are stretched from Koteshor to Ekantakuna forming a huge human chain.

Police opened fire at protesters in Gwarko.

Half a dozen tanks are placed surrounding the Narayanhity Royal Palace. What does this mean? King is feeling insecure under his turf. He is trying to prevent the uprising from entering the palace.

Just a little away in Gongabu, the place of massive protest, now some 30 thousand protesters are peacefully marching towards Chabahil. Security force is heavily deployed but they have not yet disrupted. Big logs are placed in the Ring Road (from Gongabu to Kalanki). In Banasthali, where a police beat was demolished yesterday, peaceful protest is going on. In Kalanki, yesterday’s battle field, numerous foreign media have stationed; protesters have taken control of Kalanki. Two motorbikes were damaged by protesters today morning. Security forces are staying in Balkhu side of Ring Road. The protesters are demanding the dead bodies of martyrs whose bodies were taken away by the state.

CURFEW EXTENDED. KATHMANDU PAPERS SHRINK:
As 25- hour-curfew ended today morning at 3am, people heaved a sigh of relief. Today, curfew starts at 9 am and ends at 8 pm. In the streets of Kathmandu, few vehicles are plying. In our office here at Nepal Magazine, (Tinkune, Kathmandu) staffs started arriving from the morning. Meanwhile, today’s Kantipur is only 8 pages (regular it is 12), The Kathmandu Post 4 pages (regular it is 8 pages) that too black-and-white, reminiscent of pre-color era. This is ironical while the king wants to rule in medieval way ie Dark Age.

Even Gorkhapatra is reduced to 4 page from regular 12. But, Kantipur and The Kathmandu Post are only printed in black. The Kalanki massacre has received international coverage. Nepali media too highlighted the police barbarism.

According to co-blogger Tilak Pathak, protests have resumed in Kalanki; people are hurriedly walking towards their home.

  1. Pramod,
U r the fan of Mahendra and madan bhandari. I think it is better for you to go UP and meet them.We have a UKHAN in Nepali PHUTKE KO MACHHO THULO.Madan bhandari would have been a big failure. Bhashan only does not make a good leader you have to deliver.

  2. Just read the full KG long declaration published on nepal.news. So long just to tell nothing except that he tries to keep power ! I hope you, nepalese people will not be fooled and will kick him out !

  3. DD,

theres no such declaration given in nepalnews.com just said the royal proclamation is at 7 ..so stop bullshiting

  4. yah layman..so what has madhav nepal delivered to the country huh? madan bhandari was an apt leader who could convince ppl.. i think you will be an odd man out if u think he was not a good leader

  5. If the ‘King’ doesn’t leave so easily, we’ll have to take stronger measures. Propaganda. We have to reach the army somehow. I have a feeling they really don’t give a damn about their ‘King’ anymore.

I think we can start with putting banners all over the city asking armymen to desert the ‘King’. If that’s possible. Otherwise, I don’t see how we can reach them.

  6. Transition: Declare People’s Government; Side to the people and Make it a Republic

The self-made king Gynendra is a king of his feudalism around him including Pyar Jung Thapa and so-called royal-rana circle of Nepali Army. Even though Nepali people have never been given a chance to give their verdict, they have proven from the street that this king is illegitimate. The power-obsessed dictator by giving order to use live ammunition on peaceful demonstration has proved him that is no less than Saddam or Hitler for that matter. As in less than half an hour, he is going to address the nation; there should not be much from such dictator.

Will he give people a chance to test his legitimacy and say about the complete restructuring of Nepali society? He might try to do little in order to cool down the anger in the street without giving much. This clumsy dictator so frenzy not only to listen like his brother but to speak to has been virtually defected by the people of Nepal may bring back the situation of 2001 when there was a parliament, king and all others in one side and the Maoist rebels on the other. If so we might not need to wait for another 16 years for another uprising, it will come soon within five years.

In that case we must continue our movement and from the street. This will be transition period. The rough list of actions needed immediately are:
    1. Declare a people’s government that includes Maoists
    2. Declare two separate referendums: one for constitutional assembly (in order to restructure Nepal) and next for the rebuild Nepal.
    3. Initiate public enquiry of all repressions and massacres including the one in Royal family in 2001. List the commanders that have given order for shooting at peaceful demonstration and initiate trial.
    4. Seize the properties amassed through unlawful means by government ministers including the king, army and police commanders and top government bureaucrats. Immediately imprison the culprits. Seize passports and stop anyone helping repress people from going abroad. Freeze their bank accounts in and outside Nepal.
    5. Declare ceasefire and initiate peace process by disarming Maoist Guerrillas and RNA under UN supervision.
    6. Inflict strong disciplinary measures by punishing corrupt, including the ones from the Panchayat regime and those from political parities. Completely eradicate the afno machhe culture from the governance process. Cultivate a culture of value, morality, equity, dedication and good governance. Finish all types counterproductive and political patriotism, sectarianism and exclusionary mechanism. Inflect pride on true national identity, equity, inclusion and participatory democracy. Beware of chaite and katikes too, they are the evils, refrain from them.
    7.

    8. Immediately initiate national rebuilding process.

We cannot wait for long to develop our country. We can do it with our own investment of idea, unity, dedication and true national identity.

Beware of the leaders they die for their self-interest and even submit people’s democracy to the palace. They should be imprisoned no matter how much they try to show themselves a democrat.
Down with Despot Monarchy, Long live republic Nepal.

  7. ya manan
we have to gain army’s support to wipe out killer.
we have to win their hurt saying we are not against you.
Dont shed our blood for killer.

We shoul not accept anything less than
    i)people sypremacy
    ii) Army under people

  8. What did the King say in his proclaimation???
None of the news website have been updated.

  9. I agree Krishn, especially with # 5. Hopefully they will receive some education as well. Both, the RNA and the Maoists seem a unable to use logic and reasoning properly, and seem to disregard human life, especially those of children and women. Hopefully, they will develop a conscience and know how to ditinguish right from wrong.

  10. The protest continues till the nepalese people get the absolute
power to choose their representative and for that the ultimate and
supreme power should rest on peoples verdict, not even on leaders of
seven parties or maoists leave aside the king who doesn’t exist
anymore. ACTUALLY ALREADY A NEW AND SUPEREME POWER “UNIFIED NEPALESE
PEOPLES POWER” HAS BORN CONSISTING ALL FULLY AWAKENED 2.5 CRORES
    NEPALESE.

Whosoever comes to ruling front should now fear the UNPF whose
awareness on their fundamental rights has heightened way beyond
Mount Everest peak. So any move against the newly emerged Powerful
force “Unified Nepalese peoples Force”(UNPF)would be punished with
deletion of such ruler be it congress, communist, maoist, royalist or
    security forces.

So UNPF Apeals all who have yet to Join this force to come and Join
UNPF before it is too late.

    UNPF MESSAGE BOARD:

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO THE ARMY PERSONNEL,POLICE (JANPAD AND SASASTRA)
are you fools– taking the side of a Killer King (KK)who would
either die or run away leaving you all and your ill fate in the
hands of United Nepalese Peoples Force (UNPF) before its too late
join this supreme force, be their security instead of KK’s and
confirm yours for the coming future.

TO THE HEAD LEADERS OF SEVEN PARTYS AND MAOIST
ALL of you who have also cultivated “autocracy” within your own
party by making the power concentrate within ownself and their kin
and those who have committed hinious crimes and frauds against UNPF
in the past should come forward making the announcement and to face
the consequences decided by the UNPF thereby making this
movement “TRULY LOKTANTRIC”. You should also learn to step down from
your respective supremecy from within the parties and let the “NEW
GENERATION” who actually are the real force to take a lead and
should learn to stay in “CEREMONIAL POST” showing a
true “AGRAGAMAN”. Then only UNPF would forgive you for you past deeds

UNPF IS THE ULTIMATE FORCE because without UNPF there is no
existance of the country and any one for that matter

Note: UNPF request all its 2.5 crore members to propogate this
message all over the media to let know world the birth of this
force “the ULTIMATE SUPREME POWER OF NEW NEPAL”

    JAI NEW NEPAL(JNN)

    UNPF

  11. see this coward killer
He needs curfew to make some anouncement
    else fering people flood.
    How long will you hide.
Flood will sweep you sooner or later.
You have to pay the price of blood of
    Martyrs

  12. it is not enough.
    1. he must announce CA unconditionally.
    2. show willingness to stay as ceremonial monarch.
    3. must say something about maoist. how he want to deal.

  13. Well well well !!!!!! I still don’t understand the King’s address to the nation. Is that what he thought Nepali people want at T H I S point ?????????

  14. he is smart ass and trying to stay in status quo…
no way! ca is min he should fulfill

  15. how what do we do? how fast can the SPA name a PM?

SPA should take the army under its wing and put Gyane under palace arrest!

  16. To Khirat and Dagger,

Sorry Nepal News just put a last minute message which came to be KG declaration of 1/02/2005 !!
    That was my mistake.

  17. very ambigious speech. by asking spa to recommend pm, he is looking more space to play. he should announce 2nd version of speech

who will control army? king or people?

  18. ??? ????? ?, ????????
    ????? (???? ?): ???? ????? ???? ???? ?? ? ???????? ???????
    -????? ??? ??? ?? ?? ??? ????????????
    -?????????????? ????, ????????? ??? ??????

    -???????????? ??? ???? ??????????????? ??? ??????? ???? ???????? ??? ????? ?????? ???????
    -??????? ?????? ?????????????? ?? ??? ???????

  19. I expect the ‘King’ to leave really. He was never interested in taking a ceremonial role.

  20. he is just gambling for the time. Nothing more. He just wants to feel the pulse of the people. It is the real test for SPA leaders now. We as ordinary nepali people, we never knew what was their main agenda, they never managed to let us know about their agreement with Maoists. Where do Maoists stand now ? phew this man !!!!

  21. He says that he is returning power under some article.Does that mean he has power to take and give back any time?
This is non-sense speech.Andolan should be there till the timw of ganatantra and wat is his committment to “Constituent Assembly Election”? That should be minimum meeting point.

  22. All my comments have been censord. Who is in charge of this blog any more? I am a regualr contributer on this site but lately everything I post, gets blocked and I am now forced to think who really is behind this blog-sphere. The time has come, let’s make sure the culprits of the atrocities do not get away without their punishments, I beg of every nepalese citizens out there, please do not let the likes of Tulsi Giri and Kamal thapa get away without some harse punishments. They were the rotten brains behinds shoot to kill orders, please I beg of everyone, do not let these bastards get away with this crime against humanity. Lock them up for years to be forgotten if any of you have any respect for the fallen martyrs of this glorious ‘Andolan’. As for the king let him rot in his hell of a palace regreting the stupid decisions he took undermining the power of people when they unite, let him burn himself in his personal selfish fire so he never dares to undermine the power of the people. People are supreme and people will rule this country the right way through good or rough times. let it be known.

  23. This night, we will bring Loktantra. People won’t go back home. More than 500 000 people gathering !!! KG, now time to start the helicopeter!! I wish the rotor will fail!!

  24. I saw this on BBC now and wow, was he stoned on valium or what? Why did he stop after every word?

This is extremely annoying, even the BBC reporters are shocked that they people started cheering so easily! This is embarrassing, are the people going to be like satisfied now?

  25. Does the parliament have any power over the monarchy? If they get enough signatures, can they do anything?

  26. Melissa, exactly. He looked stoned. Well he was reading from the screen in front of him and guess it was pretty difficult. He tried to show off by pretending that he was saying things outta his head. And he just messed up.

  27. Merosansar.com writes:?? ???? ???????????? ??????? ??????? ????? ?? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ????? ???? ????????? ???? ? ??????? ?????? ??????? ???? ????? ??????? ???? ???? ???????????? ?????????? ??? ???? ???? ???? ??????? ????? ????????? ??????????……Exactly, what is king’s view on reinstatement of Parliament.If parliament passes by 2/3 majority that constitution will be amended, then, can he do that?
Guys, there is just paly with words in king’s speech and nothing more……..It’s absolutely crap.he is telling the same wat he told 2 years earlier……..

I am in respectful aggreement with sage…..These Culprits be punished…..

  29. Well first he appreciated nepali people for showing faith in democracy. Then he gave his lame excuse for why he grabbed the power. Then he indirectly accused of political parties for not coming for talks. Then he said we should continue according to 2047 sambidhan. He asked SPA to form a government ( I think) . but until then his goons keep on ruling. Pretty much that. Nothing new. Nothing extraordinary. He is just checking out

  30. SPA should keep their agenda clearly now; that should address the maoist problem as well. Otherwise, back to square one, even if SPA get the Satta!

  31. I think they should now put it clearly that Constituent Assembly is a must (SPA govt may conduct that -), and King’s position ceremonial – bottom line. Else, start the helicopter.
