General Strike Day XII Updates

General Strikes continues for the XIIth Day in Nepal

By UWB! Team

1:30 PM, Palace Gate

The gate was abuzz with ex-premiers’ meeting the king. Report has it that Surya Bahadur Thapa was granted audience. Krishna Prasad Bhattarai is also rumored to be consulted. But, the latter could not be verified.

2:30, Kirtipur

The University gate, another significant gate that is the hallmark of peaceful protests for few days, was again blocked by albeit less mass today. The blockade was cleared and the journos travelling in Kantipur van headed to Kalanki.

2:45, Kalanki

NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat was leading the mass. At Balkhu bridge, security forces requested them to go back. Four protesters ie Ram Chandra Tiwari, Hriseekesh Tiwari, Deepak Khatri and Dev Timilsina were arrested by a command of Inspector Kharel. Leader Mahat and the protesters were then chased away.

3:05, Balkhu

Protesters placed a bus caught by fire at the middle of the road. Immediately, some 30 policemen arrived to clear the road. But, they could not do so.

3:55, Tyanglaphant, Kirtipur

A police barrier was posed as a shield to block the protesters from entering to the Ring Road. They retraced back to alternative way. That mass later marched at Ring Road.

5:00, Lokanthali

Ladies are participating in a mass meet. Speeches are made by them. But, the rumor of king’s meeting with ex-PMs seem to weaken the spirit of the people. Nevertheless, people of all walks of life have come to the street. It is clear that the so-called negotiations going on inside the power corridors can not deter the people. But, today’s police restraint was noteworthy. Despite the protesters shouting slogans against the monarch, the security forces showed laudable restrants. Protesters, however, were asking them to join the movement.

[11:30AM] Traffic is very low. Most of the markets closed in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. Demonstrations were held at Thimi and Kaushaltar of Bhaktapur this morning.

At Shantinagar, demonstrators pamphleted the whole area with a hand-written pamphlets that read ‘Wake Up Now! It’s Already Late.’

Demonstrations were held in many parts including Koteshwor and Balaju despite the state extending the prohibition to 200m from the Chakrapath area in Kathmandu and Lalitpur.

    UWB,
there are many more things you are missing: where is the report about Newars’ association’s gathering at Kasthamandap? what about this morning’s demonstration in Patan? What about the government employees’ sit-up strike at various places like Exam Control Office at Bakkhu?

    Have any one seen STARNEWS

Again they are giving some news of Late King Dipendra and that lady Divyani Rana.
They are just giving useless news to earn money. These Indian news media should be banned forever. They just try everytime to hurt Nepalese sentiments.

ALL THE CABLE NETWORKS WE DON’T WANT INDIAN NEWS.

    betternepal,

Why do you want starnews to be banned simply because you dont like what they say…then government is right in its motive of banning katipur or other news agencies..ya you are right that star news has never deliverd the right kind of news about nepal and for the benifit of Nepal..for that sake we can protest against the channell or we can ignore it..let us not ban it

    yo bros and sis,
i do not support banning the kantipur tv but yes the starnews and specially the zee news channels should be bannned in Nepal. well thats about the indian channels. but about the media and presss, should the press be free… hell yeah, the press should always be free..but should the press be fair as well, and again hell yeah. now in nepal is the press free.. it always was and after the royal take over there was a little bit of freedom lost…. but is the press and media in nepal fair, the answer is hell no. never was and never is.

    hey Theo and Bravo

If ignoring is the solution then why don’t you ignore what’s going on now in our courtry and go to sleep.

Another news(documentary) was given by ZEENEWS last saturday about Kailash(Mansarovar).
In that program they were talking about KALAPANI which is in the way to Mansarovar.
Now question comes Kalapani belongs to whom?
    Nepal or India.

These political leaders of congress, communist etc of Nepal can’t go to India and say remove their troops from Nepalese territory.

What they can do is go to India as soon as they become prime minister take “Prasad” from back of leaders of India.
wat you people have to say on this?

Now in Nepal we will get FULL DEMOCRACY very soon after that who will go to power. Same old leaders like Girija or Madhav or Bamdev or Sushil K etc.
If those are the same people who will go to power then how do we know that they will not repeat the Corruption they did.
And worst thing is NO ONE HAS BEEN PUNISHED AT ALL we expect that much in DEMOCRACY don’t we.

Otherwise what is difference between Democracy and Autocracy. In Nepal it is going in same direction.

Let’s give a fck about the news in star news….What matters now is the movement for peace and democracy. Even today SOME youth and people raise finger on this revolution going on. Some say “Why would we fight to bring those corrupt ones in power again?” and “SPA Maobadi ko Ghoda ho”. Yeah, some of the leaders of SPA were corrupt and even went against national interest. But the achivements of post 1990 period in every sector is incomparable than that of any other time. Democracy is a system which steps into a higher level itself. The leaders will be filtered with time. But when youth in other countries can do their work in peace we are supressed by the autocratic regime.
Many people say “Peace..Peace”. Shit on ur peace. we do not want “Murda Shanti”. Rana and panchayat period were also peaceful. Progress is stopped by instability and its root is Royal Family. All those livin’ in our tax cannot supress us. Even now old Girija is trying to carry the king..The root of instability should not be taken with us..moreover he has a worst image and bothe son and bau are murderers. Now Leaders should give a 5 day ultimatum for declaration of Constitution assembly. If not declared, we’ll move for republic. Government is sure to fail in some days if not weeks due to lack of fund and disobidiance of people and civil servants.. Some are talking about the effect of people due to closure..i feel like laughing..famine spreads in many part of country each year, even for some days the ktm settlers can’t be patient?? This should be the last time any nepali should fight for freedom and democracy. Down with fascist king..Thumbs up for upcoming democrary and progress..

    Waiba,

The newars have been doing fine until these Brahmins came along by leading all these parties including the Maoists.
What dignity are you claiming to reclaim, if it is in reference to the conquest of Prithvi Nasrayan Shah, then you are really outdated, or is it that you just want Newar countries called Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Patan and Kirtipur back, because before Prithvi Narayan Shah there was no Nepal.
When a community like ours is doing fine by living in peace, your call to violence is just very anarchic in nature. It is a call to convert peace loving citizens into mass murderers. Why the hell cant we chose dialogue!!!

Do you really think that if i give some type of protest letter to those indian channels they will listen to me. NO WAY

Even Kantipur here in Nepal doesn’t bother to publish any news that is not in their favour.
Ya i agree NTV, Gorkhapatra is bias so is KANTIPUR. They don’t give news unless they get some benefit out of it. More than Kantipur other channels like Image metro and Nepal One is very much less bias. You can even watch BBC AND CNN. They are also not that bias.

Kantipur is bringing a type of Monopoly like in print media,FM and TV they should be give just one or two. which is not good at all.
Goverment also privatise its news giving channels.

They should be pressed from all sides. if they would like to live in Nepal, they must live as an ordinary citizen paying taxes and conforming the law of the land like others otherwise there should not have any place for these filthy rich and fatcriminals, sucking neplses blood for centuries.

People must be united against King without any discriminations for ethnical, political, racial or religious problem. This is the link between all Freedom Fighters ! Then, people will have to pressure the constituent assembly to give democratic weapons to the people and not just the possibility to vote and wait what will happen. If a president, a minister or the entire governement is not good, people must have the right to kick him out. People must vote for projects and not for people who say that he will do this and that. If we take voting as a vote for projects and not for an individual, then people will be assured to have a better way of life. Of course if people vote for projects, there will be enough water supply because people will chose to put money in this project and not in buying expensive weapons for stupid reasons (for example).

I’m French and I live in a Republic. I came in Nepal for 6 months already and I’ll come back in august to marry with my future Nepali wife. I was there in february. The movement in february gave me some hope but I see that it will bring a political system with “representative” parties. I now this in France and our governement don’t listen people. There was 3 million people on the streets 2 weeks ago and the policy of governement didn’t change. They work for themselves and for rich people. A Republic in Nepal will be better than a Monarchy (or dictatorship with Gyanendra) but not the solution to take out Nepal from poverty and exploitation.

It’s just a point of view from a foreigner but I’m very interested about what happen in Nepal and if I was there today, I’m sure that I will take part to the protests. Take this mail has you want. Everything for everyone and nothing for ourselves ! Power to the people ! If the Maoists were Zapatists.

I thinks that most here have lost the plot and gone out of context. I still think that Gyanendra was not given the time of day to fulfill his promise. From day one whether it be through foreign interference, maoists or the political leaders who wanted to see him fail and the use of pro congress and party media, the parties and the powerful media have been against him with stories wilder than the imagination.
Now, we have people shouting for “DEMOCRACY”, but when has Gyanendra said that he has taken it away? In fact he foolishly added that he would even make elections happen. If I was in his shoes I would never be so altruistic and take the headache to patch this country back together at the risk of losing one’s throne.
If he let the system run as it was, it would be Deuba and his government getting the wrath of the citizens already frustrated with the downward spiral of the economy and politics in the country. What a fool he was.

I think Gyanendra truely believed that he could solve the country’s problems, but it is clear that the parties afraid he would succeed at some level spread mistrust. It is also clear that no matter how good his intentions, the people, at least the ones that feel that they are the ones that matter (i.e. the political parties and their supporters) and the one’s who really run the show with might over everything else do not want him to run the show.
I wonder, if people feel so venemous about this man, how come he has not really used force as you would imagine a person described in these pages would? But since the powers that be just dont want to give him the benefit of the doubt, I would suggest that Gyanendra step down from command and let them decide the fate of the nation, his fate and the fate of the rest of us as well.
As a famous ad goes – “Image is everything”. Unfortunately Gyanendra is a King with the wrong image in the wrong country.

    MEDIA RELEASE – 17 April 2005
Melbourne Solidarity Group for Democratic Nepal

Rally in Melbourne for Peace and Democratic Movement in Nepal

Members of Nepali Diaspora in Melbourne organised a protest rally in Federation Square in Melbourne condemning the autocratic royal regime and their blatant act against the peaceful demonstrators in Nepal. The rally was attended by more than 100 people. During the program, participants chanted pro-democratic slogans and voiced their opposition against the royal regime. Organisers also conducted petition drive. Petition will be submitted to the Prime Minister of Australia and members of House of Parliament. During the same program, money was raised to treat the victims of royal regime brutality.

The Nepalese Diaspora in Melbourne has also condemned the Australian Government’s soft stance on the human rights situation in Nepal. Rajan Bhattachan, spokesperson for the group, said, “It is time for Australia to join the rest of the international community (US, European Union, UN) in condemning the atrocities and exerting pressure on the royal regime in Nepal. We are sickened by the regimes blatant disregard for human life; everyday there is more bloodshed, another dozen arrested, another one injured or killed. The indifference shown by the royal regime to the voice of its own citizen is astounding; and the king has not taken any initiative to resolve the conflict.”

The group is deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Nepal post direct-rule by King Gyanendra on 1 February 2005 and has condemned the violence and excessive use of force by the royal regime; the arbitrary arrests of journalists and civil society members demanding restoration of democracy; disappearances of human rights activists; the curtailment of civil liberties.

Bhattachan also said, “Violence and unrest in Nepal is on the increase daily and the country is on the brink of spiralling into a failed state. We urgently call on Prime Minister John Howard and the Australian government to make a strong call on the King to initiate dialogue with the political parties (SPA) for restoration of the democratic process and civil liberties; to immediately release all political leaders and protestor from detention; to initiate strong resolutions against the royal regime in the Security Council and Human Rights Council; and lastly and more importantly to appoint a high-level special envoy to work with other partners and put together a coherent Nepal policy to help the Nepali people to regain their lost democratic rights and freedom, to resolve the Maoist problem, and to ensure post-conflict reconstruction and development.”

I think that this must have full democracy otherwise no body can trust the leaders any more. The leaders also have not given the full details what they will do when the King will surrender powers.

The first thing we must do is the following:

    1. If we want to retain the ceremonial king, he should not be made Supreme commander in Chief of the Army any more. The next step is to declare the PM as the President of the Government like in Spain. All powers should be vested to the PM and the Parliament, not a single power should be given to the King.He will again abuse.

    2. The better idea is to have the election of the Constituent Assembly under international and UN observation and it should decide about the formulation of the new Constitution. On this condition, Maoists must surrender their all arms.

3.A High level legitimate Commission should be constituted to investigate and suggest punishment for corruption by the King and chamchas as well as for the corruption done by the leaders since 1990. We should not spare any one. Forget about the corruption done in Panchayat era. We can not go that far.

    4. Another high level human rights commission to investigate the violation of Human Rights carried out by the secutirty forces as well as by the Maoists.

    5. A rehabilitation programme for the Maoists who have already decided to surrender their arms.

    Layman,

Your suggestions make a lot of sense. However if we are to have a ceremonial king-which might be a good idea-he will have to be given amnesty. We cannot start prosecuting the head of state. However the prosecution of the the chamchas is fair (though I am sure they will say I was following orders from the King-but this is no excuse). The corrput leaders since 1990 must definitely be brought to book and the people responsible for the Maoist abuses must also be punished.

  44. Layman Avatar
    Layman

Yes I agree with you about the King for amnesty if we want a ceremonial king. But he must stop all his commercial businesses. He cannot be a King and do the business simultaneously asking for tax exemption and other favours for his business. At least, this must stop now.I would also like to know what are the details of his business ? Not only of him, businesses of all the other members of Royal family. If they get the budget or allowances from the govt. they must stop their business.

  45. Kirat Avatar
    Kirat

Yeah I agree on that. I read an article on Time magazine which discusses the monarchy in the UK. They have to pay taxes like normal citizens. The monarchy there are pretty enlightened so they actually make all their palace expenses public-voluntarily. Well as long as they pay their taxes and their business transactions are legitimate I am okay with them doing business, that’s my personal opinion, and I know there is always the possibility of them abusing their position to further their business, but they must be given the same rights as every citizen.

Hey old KP Bhattarai claims democracy will be restored soon after meeting the king. The India ambassador also met Girija today apparently to brief him of his meeting with the King yesterday.

I sincerely hope the King is making a genuine attempt to address the demand for democracy that the people are protesting for-even if it is only to save his skin. Frankly speaking the SPA-Maoist alliance scares me as the SPA are weak and the Maoists are evil. I know the King would never agree to it but the UN should be made a part of the dialogue-as an observer-so that no one can back track on the pledges they will have to make.

  48. Kirat Avatar
    Kirat

    ram lal,

easier said than done. if it takes longer but can be done more peacefully I would prefer it to a bloody but shorter conflict. The price of a bloody conflict on the Nepali people would be too high and the scars would take too long to heal. We have to be pragmatic. Besides don’t forget about the Maoists-they don’t care for democracy. They have already rejected democracy that is why they took up arms in the first place.
