Aerial Assault: Survivors' Images

Images from Nepal’s Arghakhachi District where civilians were injured in an army aerial attack against Maoist “terrorists”.

Arghakhachi aerial attack.ask Jeevan Gautam of Khidim VDC-8, Arghakhachi whose family members were injured
Surviving an Arial Assault: If you want to know how it feels to be the innocent victim of the ongoing conflict in the country, just ask Jeevan Gautam of Khidim VDC-8, Arghakhachi district. In an aerial attack launched by the army targeting the Maoists rebels down on the Earth, Jeevan’s second son died. No, no, no, he was not a Maoist. Jeevan’s other two sons, a daughter, a grandson and a granddaughter were injured in the incident. Now, after knowing all this, do you even need to ask him that question? Thank God, he has not been branded terrorist yet!

Arghakhachi aerial attack.81-year-old Bir Bahadur BK

Okay, he is 81-year-old Bir Bahadur BK, a local resident who was injured in the same aerial assault.

Arghakhachi aerial attack. Injured is 9-year-old child.

And she is 9-year-old child. Yes, look at her cheek. Injured in the same army action against the ‘terrorists’.

Arghakhachi aerial attack.Fortunately, this 85-year-old wasn't injured.

Fortunately, this 85-year-old wasn’t injured. She is pointing to that part of he house was got ‘injured’ by the bullets fired from above.

  1. Very sad to read RNA’s indiscriminate aerial firing…. how long should we bear this tyrrany? This is a mere cowardice act of the present regime. It should not make aerial attacks where civilians are there.

  2. This is not the 1st. time that death and/or destruction has rained down on Nepali civilians from the RNA.

Reports persist that there has been, by mistake or design, many killings in remore areas by RNA helicopters as well as RNA ground units when there are “suspected Maoist or calibrators”.

Often this is blamed on the Maoist. When animals are killed-from-the-sky and left to rot, it is hard to believe that if the Maoist were the culprits, they would leave dead goats and chickens, when they often live off the land…

    Please remember Nepali recent history:

Prime Minister G.P. Koirala in 1998, ordered the RNA & Police in an operation called KILO SIERRA to crack down on civilians in suspected Maoist areas. Whole villages were burned to the ground and many villagers were jailed and tortured.
KILO SIERRA affected 18-20 Districts throughout Nepal and as many as 2000 were dissapeared, killed, tortured, raped or kidnapped.

Until the US Trained & Armed RNA & Police are brought under the control of Democratic forces, they will continue their War Against the Nepali People !

  3. if maost were not there then this would have no taken place. it is just not fair to blame rna

  4. If the army had not launched indiscriminate assault then it would have taken place!!!Nepalese army lacks professionalsm and act abbrently, of course most of the times, just to hide their incompetency…and usually these assaults are not well planned (rather ill planned) and without any consideration for civilian casualty…Strategy: ‘Open forest with few youths…damn launch assault…

Oopps if there is any civilian casualty then seize the area, brand those killed as terrorists and intimidate villagers not to speak truth to the press or human rights activist…next day they run propoganda news through its mouthpieces…terrorists killed in an arieal assult…large cache of wires and socket bombs found…Maoists literature, strategy papers and important documents found…” Damn strategy of a honest army loyal to their Master, the evil tyrant destined to hijack all democratic practices in Nepal…

  5. why is this event getting highlighted so much and not the events where maoist disrued bomb in middle of city in Pokhara nad injuired tens of people.

deepndra jee … tapai pani maobadi ho ki kya ho?

    no more jokes, serious…
Its pityful to see such images, but turth is with this war no one will be benefited niether maoist nor RNA… and most harmed will be ppl…

When maoists make normal people as shield and attack on army, what is left for army to do?

  6. “why is this event getting highlighted so much and not the events where maoist disrued bomb in middle of city in Pokhara nad injuired tens of people.”

That’s because the RNA positions itself as morally superior to the Maoists. If we were allowed to call RNA action “terrorism” then we’d probably get about equal coverage of both sides, which are equally responsible for the mess.

But as long as one group positions itself as superior when it is not, we are bound to focus on the bad things they did.

  7. Dear Mannan

Perhaps it is not United we Blog for Democratic Nepal but United we Blog for People’s Republic of Nepal OR this Blog is scared of MBs. Let us not forget that even in Democracy we need Nepal Army and that army is to be made from RNA.

  8. The first photograph says all……..

    I am so moved.

I wonder do the perpetrators see these photographs? How do they feel?

Can a person be counted in percentage?

Blood-thirst in snarling in it’s severest form. Pay heed to the repercussions these will have on the days to come O lords of the atrocities!

  9. THIS IS JUST A PROPAGANDA PHOTO

WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS OF INNOCENT CIVILIAN CASUALTY OF SERIES OF POKHARA INCIDENT CARRIED OUT BY THE MAOISTS?????

  10. I do agree with GOD! Although, the King is in a path of destruction of country, critising the army for carrying out a routine operation against those marked terrorist as the state is very dissapointing and depressing for the Army and the people.

Recently, I have found the readings in the blogs of UWB, very much biased against the eastablishment. Again, I make it clear i am not the one who supportst he present establishment. But, reporting an incident and making it a bigger propaganda is not true journalism, Guys, please let us read soverign and unbiased journalism. We cant expect that from the state owned media. At least you guys can, So, please be careful that you dont cross the line from printing a true story to printing a story that would make a lot of propaganda.

  11. Let us go back with ifs:

    1) If Mahendra has not sacked the elected Government of BP Koirala, perhaps our politics would have been diffirent. The struggle for democracy in the 90 would not have been necessary.

    2) If the ruling party have been little sensible and rule of law and order was adhered, I believe MBs would not have been existed.

    3) If the party people have been more towards the country interest instead of party interest, the whole GP and Deuba saga would not have been there.

    4) For me the root cause of the problem is KG because of democracy he could not do the business as he would like to have as he has been doing. Because of democracy he could not get the money from the state purse as he would have liked. Because of the democracy he could not cover up the heineous act of Paras of killing civilians. This fellow is a power maniac. Unfortunately Nepal deserters like T Giri, a liar of highest degree as Kamal Thapa, cheats like all these ministers who somebody said in the blog as boolickers have taken advantage and ahve ruined our country to the lowest possible level.

    4) Why this fighting? Why killings? Going and bombing in the civilian area even if MBs are hiding cannot be excepted. When everybody is telling let us have constituent assembly why not go for it.

  12. Going and bombing in the civilian area even if MBs are hiding cannot be accepted

  13. Binasaa kalee biparita buddhi as the saying goes. The RNA is awaits its downfall along with the feudalistic society of our country being represented and led by the king. The RNA is struggling to be on the defensive and hold its position leave alone the concept and logistics of protecting the people and the nation; officers/ generals of the RNA plese think before you implement these kind’a actions as they are just aiding your downfall, increasing maoists recruits and pain for the innocent common folks, please and once again please take into consideration us common folks.

  14. I think UWB is working in collaboration with the ‘KANTIPUR-the biased’ with one sided views. Do you have enough courage to condemn maoist atrocities? Are they supposed to kill civilians (in brutal manner), destroy public property etc. etc. in the name of people’s war?

At least these pictures show only the collateral damages at the field of conflict and mostly unintentional. What about maoists cutting skins, penis, ears, noses of the innocent people in public? Maoists are worse than Talebans who did not provide any medicine causing the recent death of a civil servant in captive. I think sword is mightier than pen nowadays..

  15. The aim of this forum is to get the so called democratic parties back into power by putting an end to the direct rule for the next year or so by the King.

The fallacy in this argument and which I see all media avoiding is – yes it is a fair enough call, but then what?

Are the parties going to start working in a positive manner with no corruption, little red tape and liberalisation of the economy, allowing internal and foreign investors the speed and efficiency in service to tap into our tourism and hydro power potential?

Are they going to have the Maoists come to the table for ground breaking talks?

Are they going to allow the CIAA access to their old leaders and party members and beneficiaries of the past 15 year party raj, so that they can be investigated without street protests and bandhs and if found guilty locked up for a long time after their ill gotten gains have been confiscated?

Are they going to administer this country with increased efficiency as the years proceed? Or does the people have to rely on their own resources for the basic necessities like electricity, water etc.?

I have heard from the few loyalists and faithfuls, how the early years of democracy brought about good economic growth (Mahat even published a book on it!!!). But we all know that those were largely due to the efforts of the private sector, all the government did (as is their job to do so) is allow the private sector a little more freedom compared to the Panchayat. The government could have done much more if their approach to the economy was far sighted (structured tourism, hydropower, more liberal banking laws etc.). Had they done a little more our economy would have grown in double digits, and our per capita income would probably have doubled, and yes the Maoists would have little scope for recruiting lost souls.

I find it angering for any governments in the past to take credit for the efforts of the people, because we all know that the government could have done a lot, lot more. The higher growth rates in the early nineties was purely due to the efforts of the private sector – we would still be at the same level of growth today, had the Maoists not begun their insurgency (not to mention the crushing global fuel prices as compared to the days gone by). But, what is worse is that had the govts. done more in the early nineties, we would not have had an insurgency at all.

  16. on behalf of RNA, it was the most bizzare and absurd aerial attack I have ever heard. First of all, these so called pilots of our RNA choppers ( sons and cousing of highly connected army’s top brass) would never dare to descent to the height frm where the aerial attack is mainly conducted) secondly those gunners are never trained well to operate in such altitude adn withoug any proper equipments, low range and low callibre guns tend to move away from its trajectory and often miss the target..
these RNA fools will never learn that not only weapons but proper training is needed to run such operation. Aerial attach should be only reserved to back up the ground assult, unless they can be precise with target and intelligence as ar isrealese… shame on RNA…
The most factor underlying the misscalculated attacks and operation of RNA can be directly blamed on poor intelligence gathering and weak and inexperinced division/platoon commader who from thousands of miles way coridnate such attach without really having a real grasp of the battle field.
All I can say that all the offensive carried out by RNA can be only tantamount to be Massacre and genocide.
Its high time before the RNA restructures it battle strategies, otherwise only road they will take will be to geneva to face a int’l crim court… beware that.
Btw whom are these soldier’s fighting for is it for the king for the people,,even themare the ppl even thier families are being massacred all around the country and visa versa… they need to discard there antiquated slogan i.e for desh and naresh,, ,time to shout for desh and janta,,, naresh is all too happy to give orders and the top brass are all too happy to carry out even for a moment not thinking of its consequences.

As for the Maoist, and thier recent attacks, it all shows that they are very desperate to win a major battle and be in the forefront of the news as well as be the game maker in the present political upheavel.
to my best understanding,, the Rna, the Palace and other political parties should tottaly ignore them or crush them by force unless they are willing to give up arms and joing the main stream parties. But all these wishes are just a far far dreams of a nepali kancha,,, these netas and thier sickenss drive them to delhi every often to meet specialist like dr. baburam..
as long as these netas dont stick to one principle, we have no rites to complain as to why gyanendra took over the power in his feb 1? proclamation.
allrite all of you want king to give up power and give jantas the democracy. then who would you like ur Pm to be again,,, nepalese are like bheda,,, jsut cans think of thier own, like to follow the group.

we are heading rite towards the civil war,,, and I strongly blame these politcal parties,, who like a bhusiya kukur can really make a u turn and run to maoist for consultation when they are out of power ,
PPl like girja needs to go to sanyas now,, he never proved anything while at the helm of nepali politics,,, who has sorrounded with lotsa scandals and to add fuel to the fire, miss sujata tottaly suck the last blood out of our national carrier, ROYAL NEPAL AIRLINES,,,

  19. In this time Royal Nepal army is in defencive mode. Both army( moist and royal armys) war wont finished recently. it is obvious that one days Royal army must come with publik and they should left king ganendra. Before some
month royal army attacted many district like Syangja, Palpa, Nawalparasi and Argakhachi etc. There have been injured many peoples. I think it is not good idea to solve the conflict. it the poltical problem not terrorist problem. in this time king gyanendra have last step of war he may be finished in a few month.

All people hope that New government come in nepal recently.

  20. The RNA as I have come to see is an incompetant force with many internal problems. Firstly the top brass of the RNA is filled with people who are there primarily because of their surname rather then field experience/bravery. Hence we witness these ill cordinated attackes and hear about how the army was caught off guard etc. Basically what proves that the RNA is serverly incompetant to fight this war is that they have been unleased for the last 10 years and not once have we had an arrest of a top leader or an attack that captured/killed field commanders. All that seems to happen is that they kill a few Maoists here and there and that’s it and even then there always seems to be more casualties on the RNA’s side.
I wish that someone would smack King Gynandra on the head and tell him “YOU MURKH”

  21. The RNA should buy some Russian built Kamov helicoptors. I am sure no one will be left injured to tell their sad stories. All will be sent straight up.

  22. Its true what people say. The Royal Nepal Army is a terrible institution. Its the worst hangovers of the Rana era. We need to get rid of all the Ranas and the Shas and others like that first. My friend, who’s a Chettri, has no experience with the army and he was made a lieutenant or something. He himself was ashamed of it.

Unless that goes, don’t expect the RNA to do any better. When the top brass are so ignorant, what can you expect of the bottom?

  23. Wagle ji,
Any updates from Ilam? I am bit worried of my beautiful Ilam–nice tea bagan, greenaries, illaichi farms, and what not, being destructed by the conflict. Pls post asap the situations there.

  24. Kantipur Media and people related to it, are giving lot of oxygen to Maoist propoganda – which includes UWB.

  25. hi yesto aapahatte banayara kina marne nepal ka sabai mao and army
lai eaki kholsa ma layara marnu parne. aani matra nepal ma santa hola natra aaja ten barsa yestai ho. tasaile aaba sabai political parties have to have one place to fight with RNA and JNA pick only NA and RJ put on big hole. bichara nirdosh nepali lai bich ma banayar radako machayuni lai mara hai nepali janata.
    abc form jungle

  26. I know that bire dai. Unile pani malai chinchan bichara. yesto aapahatty.
    god blass him.

  27. manji, good point. who is the RNA fighting for? The “collateral damage” of these aerial raids that were poorly planned and executed are NEPALI PEOPLE, someone’s mother, father, brother, sister, grandfather.
Yes, the Maoists have killed many, as well.l But that does not mean we should not demand the RNA to respect human rights and try to avoid such unnecessary carnage. We should expect them to uphold international standards of human rights as outlined in the Geneva Convention, as well. It is becoming clearer by the day that the RNA is not an army of the people anymore. It is an army of the King, the only thing that is holding up his flimsy autocracy.

  28. So do you guys suggest RNA should surrender to the Maoists and leave the country to turn into a communist republic. if the majority here agree to this then i do not have any objection.

Thanks god there were not much of civilian casualties and i still do not understand you claim RNA incompetent.
We are the same people who used to think that as RNA come out of the barrack this insuegecy would not remian more than a week or so. but the situation went out of their control because the insurgency was not indeginous but supported and played to destablise the country by the Indians.

There is clearly a strategy going on to defame the RNA, the only institution remaining in the country that is left untouched by India influence.

Politics, bureaucracy, judiciary, information sources all already corrupted by India, RNA is the only one untouced and the one carrying Nepali identity.

We can criticize but cannot defame the only remaining symbol of nepali nationalism.

Have you ever heard the same indians criticizing their army. certainly not. but there are cases that the Indian army failed to protect the civilains and instances they involved in human rights violation. corruption is rampant in the indian army but not a single newspaper covers such instances.

But we are the nepalese never colonised in the history but still with a slave mentality serving foreigners by defaminig our own Army. what a pity

  29. COKE,

    Slight correction to your postings:

We suggest RNA should surrender to the PEOPLE and agree to be under elected president. How’z dat?

  30. These images are just a few glimpses cought by the photographer’s lense. The horrendous crimes perpetrated by the RNA against Nepali people are yet to be made public.

  31. I like your idea but my questions are as follows:

    1. Are our leaders who virtually are the agents for Indian Expansionism capable of controlling the RNA?

    2. How about the fact that the politicalization of Police and its current effects, what lessons can we learn?

    3. Are there any leader in the country at present to whom people have faith and beleif so that he will lead us to a republic which will be as per the demands and needs of the Nepali people?

There are millions and millions of Neplese who subscribe to this view, may be they want a republic but really do not beleive their leaders.

My dear, we cannot just go thro the sentiments and say we want a republic.

    4. Do we know what republic do we want, you may say a Bihari one- but i don’t agree.

    5. Do you want GP or Madhav or Prachanda as our president, i do not agree.

Please convince me what republic do we want and who should i beleive.

Just reading blog sites who are serving some interests i am not a fool to go thro the sentiments and say i want a republic.
But we can discuss and think a lot.
Time has certainly come that we Nepalese should think in this regard but not the right time to go for it atleast reading a blog site as corrupt as this.

  32. I have heard western democratic countries running rescue operation for their civilians when terrorist kidnap even a single person risking the life of thousands of its troop. Over here, king is bombing villages just because so called terrorist exist there. They do all this not save people’s life but to save the ass of their supremo.. what a lame thing to do from a ruler.. and what justified thing for a dictator.. so let us fight for democracy… and our democratic rights…

  33. No one should make human shield and villages as shields to attack another, that is the major mistakes UWB should understand.

Why UWB is silent toward the capture of one truck of weapons brought from India? India is regularly supplying weapons to maoiost and this web is silent, what is the reason. It is the great issue both parties should not allowed to bring the weapons to kill people.

  34. UWB. What a propoganda machine it has been turned into. Kantipur was and is Indian controlled media house and what more can we expect from the employees of such an organization.

In times of war, many such horrors do happen. very unfortunate but it is the reality. But these guys are hell bent on making us believe that whatever RNA does, it is crime and they enjoy that.

If we have reporters like these, not even god can help us.

  35. It is high time KG and the parties got together and worked towards a solution.

I think instead of a constituent assembly etc. they should fine tune the present constitution. One of the changes should be that after KG, the monarch should be ceremonial or there should be transition into a democratic republic.

I think the buck should stop at Paras. This will give us a few years for the people and the palace to resign to the idea of a ceremonial monarchy or a democratic republic. This is the path if they care for the country.

KG is required to help in this transitional phase. But let us stop the gravy train before the next generation. I suspect it would also be a big load off the back of unpopular Paras. I dont think he is up to the task, it would be best for him to accept this course otherwise the consequence can be devastating not only for him but the entire nation as well.

  36. AA aab Laut Chale: Tujh Ko pukare desh Tera

  37. Simple….
If wishes were horses, beggers would have a ride… Your wish is my wish but looking at how the country is being run, this is wellneigh impossible. Sky may fall, but our future king will not relinquish his dream. Where have you seen King willingly giving out to republicnism? I guess CP controls the RNA. I do not think there are many democrats in RNA top brass. Rana/Shah/Thapa…. we have not come out from Rana rules in truest sense.

  38. tell us mr Hero Honda Sleek
how would the country run if we agree what you say? do you know it or just barking like a stray dog

  39. Sleek,

It’s not only a wish, it is a sincere stance that all parties should negotiate. The King has become the most unpopular in our history, albeit a lot of it is to do with his son Paras.
It is also not a question of relinquishing dreams, we are still a constitutional monarchy, elections are still a possibility for our parties. When the house is restored in 2007, the house can pass such motions in parliament. They have to negotiate hard if they care for this nation.

Nothing can be gained by wishes, but at the same time nothing can be gained by empty and poetic rhetoric and doing nothing.

Being a Rana/Shah/Thapa does not mean they are undemocratic. You forget that there are plenty of Thapas fighting for democracy. Also, Subharna Shumshere and the like (Bharat Shumshere, Diamond Shumshere, Jagdish Shumshere etc.) are Ranas and was founders and funders of the Congress party of BP Koirala. Some of them like Bharat Shumshere was always routing for a republic well before anyone in the Congress, or UML or even the Moaists thought of it, and have been to prison for it and have lived in exile for it. Baburam Bhattarai in an interview said he drew the inspiration from Bharat Shumshere’s book on socialism for his revolution. So stop generalising. This is in itself extremism.
Conclusion being that the RNA has many democrats within it also.

  40. “Conclusion being that the RNA has many democrats within it also.” IF it is so, these “democrats” must wear their colour and come out in the open. IF not, they are mercenaries of the palace employed to protect royal properties.

  41. Lets be practical and professional than more emotional. This incident forces me to look back statement from RNA few weeks ago, which says that they didn’t fire back to Maoist at Palpa headquaters attack, because they were aware of densely populated civilians. At that moment I thought that they have good sense of innocence of commom civilians and they respect the conflict affected people.

What this incident implies the stand of RNA, has anybody think about it? They make their words and change their words what a situation leads, to defend themselves personally, professionally and more honestly cowardly.

RNA should not compare themselves to Maoist saying that people only blame RNA and overlook similar acts from Maoist. RNA should not forget that every nepali is paying money in tax for their water and food, even cutting money for their childern’s milk. So every nepali has a moral(i dont about leagl) right to question about your activities. Nepalis don’t pay volunterally(by rule of law) to Maoist.

People are now ready to analyze their way of living life, this is open challenge from a society to the rulers, whoever they are. If you could not address them you will be destroyed if not in present then surely in history. More later…….

  42. guys
do you anyone know if there is a nepali FM radio online. i am getting sick of this place.

  43. Exactly, people are PAYING money to run the RNA. That’s a very significant point. Hard-working Nepalis are being taxed to run this unprofessional and feudalistic institution.

And this same thing that we are paying for is killing US! How about that? Irony of ironies. We HAVE to scrap this useless army; its a product of a bygone era, of a time of Kings and Queens; it has no place in modern society.

  44. Nepalese are never hardworking. if we are hardworking then rather than coming to this site we would be somewhere working. We are the most unproductive people.
Scrap the RNA-very good option. Na rahega bas na bajegi basuri.
I have never heard such a beautiful idea in my whole lifie. Bravo Manan.

  45. being nepalease i want peace and good environment for the country. for this if we need to sacrifice some human life that’s ok!! Good things come with price( incase of Nepal not hardwork atlease Blood of People)

anyway how long we are fighting eachother, The country with such a rich history, why we still can’t manage food, shelter and good education for our childernin 21st century. what’s the matter with us? look at the world where are they now, look at their progess. Feel sorry very sorry and now we paying the price

  46. I am not convinced SIMPLE ! Not at all, stark truth is King has RNA and as long as RNA remains faithful to the king, your opinion doesnot hold water my dear. Do not tell me, the crap that Shah/Thapa/Rana …… are democrats. You are generalizing them. The fact remains that our ARMY top brass has never seen ethnic people on the top post.

No Newar/Bahun/Chhetri/Tamang/Gurung/.. has ever been COAS. You are blind man, open up and see the history. What constitution are you talking about ? You are offended simply because your veil is being opened here. R U one of those Thapa/Rana/ clan? I am using CLAN not generalizing poor Thapas and sincere RANAs.
