Thanks To Maoists, Constituent Assembly Election Postponed Again

No new date has been fixed. The Election Commission alone does not have the right to fix a new date.

In a very sad political development in Nepal, the Election Commission today suspended the entire process of Constitution Assembly elections scheduled for 22 November after it received a request this morning from the government to do so. The government, on its part, decided to request the Commission after the alliance of seven parties decided to postpone the electoral process. The seven party alliance (that includes the Maoist) decided to postpone the election programs after the Maoists expressed their unwillingness to participate in the election (without first declaring Nepal a republic and/or adopting full proportional voting system) in a meeting of the seven parties held at Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s residence at Baluwatar this morning. The Election Commission that had completed all preparations for the elections thanked all political parties, leaders, the media, the general public and international community for extending their support during commissionโ€™s preparation work for the polls.

CPN-UML, Janamorcha Nepal and Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party have written notes of dissent on the agreement, UML leader Jhalanath Khanal said, according to the Himalayan Times. Earlier yesterday, the leaders had agreed to put on hold the election schedule till the special House session after no consensus was reached on Maoists two key demands on republic and electoral system. UML leaders blamed Nepali Congress and the Maoists for the deadlock. The party said it cannot agree on postponing the polls at any cost. Nepali Congress leaders said they opted to postponing the poll process rather than confronting the Maoists. “We thought it was better to postpone the polls rather than confronting the Maoists,” today’s Kantipur daily quotes Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel as saying. (more here)

Reactions: United States embassy in Kathmandu was quick to issue a statement saying that the US was “disappointed at the suspension of the CA election process.” The statement said: “It is important that all parties firmly commit themselves to quickly establish a new election date…. We urge the Government of Nepal, with the full support of all parties, immediately to address the key elements of the Comprehensive Peace Accord which remain unfulfilled and to implement its agreements with various ethnic groups. The period between now and the Constituent Assembly election should be used to show the people of Nepal that the Interim Government is responsive to and can meet its commitments to make a better life for the people of this country.”

don tell me that you even thought that CA was going to take place?
well now they have the ticket to rule nepal for eternity.
no checks and no balances. they (spa) can do what ever and when ever they want, without any opposition.
duhh!!! these retards are doing no good, nor will they ever do.

Really bone with dogs . They all fight not to let other eat !!

Now the SPA government is officially illegitimate and all the decisions further by them should be invalid. How would you believe a group when they declare another date just to postpone again. SPA should take up the responsibilty and resign en masse. We have seen incompetent govt. of Deuba,Gyanendra but this govt is the pinnacle of incompetence. If it continue any further a political catastrophe would emerge. Nepal is in deep crisis now and to give a way out Govt must resign.

They have paved the way for other forces who are looking for the good opportunity to make a comeback, I wouldn’t be surprised if Army would initiate some move and I’m sure like me many people would welcome that!!

    Enough is enough!!

It’s time to hit the street to protest the rising influence of Maoist totalitarian tactic and to demand the timely elections of constituent assembly. Another coup (king/army or Maoist) is the last thing Nepal wants. Nepal also doesn’t want the derailment of the peace process. We are in a very fragile situation. The people must exert pressure on the Maoists to come to the democratic process.

Well, Nepalese casted enough votes to Prashant Tamang recently to make that Indian boy the Indain Idol. Sounds like that’s what Nepalese deserve, not the real votes in real elections.

Is this is a coup by the seven parties? Wow, see the date of this decision. Friday the 18th, Asoj 2064. Gyanendra started his coup on the same day, Friday the 18th Asoj 2059 and completed in 19 Magh. Please all it’s time to do something. These parties can’t run away from the democratic process. We know Maoists never favor democratic exercise but we must bring them into the electoral process. Even if this is a coup by the parties, it shouldn’t end up as 19 Magh version of the Maoists, it must end as the election day.

Its time to come out into the streets people.

these are one of those things that most knew was going to happen. what surprised me is that people really for a moment believed that girija will save nepal. all the political parties had more than a decade from 1990 to 2001 to prove their worth. they failed that is why this situation this day. and i dont even want to start about the maoist.
what im more disapointed with are my brothers and sisters my fellow nepalese. i really did not understand when the same faces adorned the power seat when they said they started janandolan 2. for me if really ppl had wanted republic they would have done so in 1990. when the esprit of democracy was PURE and strong. and we could have pushed on ppl had died and were willing to die for a cause. but the leaders betrayed us. thats is why ganesh man never join the govt. and the same leaders betrayed us again. what else is new. just the fact the these ppl successfully organize janaandolan 2 and got the ppl to support is a signal that most of the nepali are more concerned about staying on top of the food chain then about equal rights and democracy. for me i see that gyne challenged the team girija and then girija joined hands with maoist to liquidate gyane. moaist as always took full use of the oportunity and still are taking and will continue to take. for they are not much then bunch of murderers and know nothing except murdering and looting. they have a goal and they will go for it. still thay havent reached a point militaryly where they had to come to the table to talk. unless this point is reached maoist will always be a threat to peace. they will play this card and as a matter of fact they do it alot. look NC says they prefer to dissapoint the ppl rather than to piss off the maoist. this statement by NC proves that they are really quick to point the blame. this beheviour which was quite frequent in the democratic years of nepal is one of the biggest weakness of the political parties noone is man enough to say ok i made a mistake it was my weak ness i will rectify. but no they keep on doing the same maybe its true you cant teach old dog new tricks. same goes to the nepali janta. maybe everyone is so corrupt that they keep on supporting these ppl. this is all so jodido and depressing.
well wont be long before nepal will witness another coup.

The whole cause of this is due to Maoist who doesn’t have any vision for Nepal’s prosperity. How can they asked the interim parliament to declare the republic!!SHOCKING.. as everyone knows that all the maoist parliamentarian are not elected from the people (they are TIKE MP), and most of them even don’t have citizenship. (I doubt whether they are even nepali citizen). They are not the true representative of people in the parliament unlike other party representative in the parliament. The mandate for the Janaandoln 2 is to conduct the fair election. After the election, then only those elected parliamentarian have right to declare republic, not from those people’s killer.

The second rediculus demand of Maoist is full proportional system. ARE THEY AFRAID OF GOING TO THE PEOPLE FOR VOTE IF THEY HAVE TO PRODUCE THE SINCERE ELIGIBLE CANDIDATE?? KUN MUKH LE VOTE MAGNA JAANE?? (The past bits bhaneko yehi ho). For the backward community, we should give them education, housing etc that they needed most, rather than TIKE MP as in full proportional electoral system. Maoist want to grab power through TIKE MP, rather than from peoples representative. The whole scenario is that Maoist don’t wan’t any election at all. And their strategy is to establish the communist state with heavy bloodshed. I heard one of the top Maoist saying that “CHINMA MAO LE TA 70 MILLION MANCHHE MARE BHANE NEPAL MA TA HAMLE JAMMA 13000 MARYOU. TESAILE NEPAL MA MAOIST KO YEKLAUTI SASHAN GARNE HO BHANE ARU 80-900000 MANCHHE MARNU PARCHHA.” This thought from the top maoist leader is very shocking. None of their leaders whatever they say in the public don’t fulfil the promise..JHUTTHE, MAKKAR haru. Last time when they wanted the seats on parliament, they said after the CA election, if the people are in favor of monarchy, then they would accept it. Mr PUSHPA DAHAL, did you forget what you had said? How can we trust you in future, even though we declare republic through this parliament..ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. YOU LIAR. This is 2007 not 1956, and don’t forget that you are in Nepal, not in China. and for people’s sake don’t bring this outdated strategy so called Maobaad, Stalinbaad or PuspaPath. People are not foolish as you think .UNDERSTOOD>>>So all the democratic force must unite and fight against Maoist.

The spaM made janaandolan-2 as a laughable stuff. Those who went to streets in favour of these liers got nothing but more crimes and chaos in the country. These liers made historical unsuccesful government and useless parliament. Even no peace and no democracy as well what they had committed to the people. More urgently they will be kicked out more we can survive from becoming Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, Combodia etc. If they will stay in power, there will be more killings and civil war, and country’s sovereignity will be collapsed.

One lesson learnt – Never trust the Maoists.

Maoists fear elections. Maoists don’t have peaceful means to persue their dream to power. Maoists are dishonest. Maoists are hypocrites. Maoists are extremists. Maoists are against republic Nepal. Maoists are complements of Monarchy and vice versa. Don’t listen to the Maoists. Don’t give space to the Maoists. Confront the Maoists. Boycott the Maoists.

The country was ready for republic. It was all set to happen. People were all set to write their constitution. But the Maoists butchered the election. So don’t blame others for the cancellation of CA polls. Blame the Maoists only. Blame the coward extremists called Maoists.

Fully proportional electoral system doesn’t let people pick their choice. Nepali congress was absolutely right to stand for mixed system. We didn’t need the CA made up of Tike Pratha. So the Maoists have literally made way for another coup. They are the biggest problem. Let Gyanendra and his army fight with Prachanda and his army. We will fight agains the winner between the two tyrants.

Only THREE months have passed after MAOISTS agreed for the NOV
election and ELECTION SYSTEM. Now they see certain defeat they
put some excuse to rum away from the people’s verdict.

They have no political character. How can a party not stick to its commitment
even for two months. True no party in Nepal are good, but Maoists
are that bad they dont deserve to be called a political party.

How long one can run away from the truth. Today or tomorrow they will
disappear from Nepal. Sooner the better for Nepal and Nepalese.
Of course all sides are going to suffer but the biggest loser will
    be Maoists.

  28. chamatkaribaba Avatar

It is a very good sign for Nepal that Maoists are losing people’s supports. It also shows that how maoists are not fit in democratic process and always want to shy away from people. All the blame should go to the CPN Maoists and its leaders. They deserve to immolate themselves somewhere in public.

Now, let’s see the rammifications of these decisions. All political parties should unite not to allow regressive forces to rise their heads. The Political parties should be united to make maoists a bunch of failures before they try to throw democracy from Nepal and before they convert us (we-all nepali) to a mere slaves.

Let say down with the maoists and let’s keep our vigil to make sure that maoists lose elections (whenever that will be held!!) so badly that BabuRam and Prachanda quit from active politics.

Maoists have shown that they are as undemocratic and tyrants as Shah dynasty are.

The title should read elections delayed thanks to Nepali Congress intransigence. Or better yet, you could not show inherent bias in the article. To each their own.

The Nepali congress thought they could pull a bait and switch. The plan:

Get the Maoists to agree on no republic before elections so that can’t claim it as their victory, get the Maoists to agree on a Mixed system so they lose the support of their constituency in the Terai and get the Maoists to give up any significant ministries all for the sake of having the elections held on June 9th while they still enjoy popularity. Then delay the elections to give him enough time to unite the Nepali congress (so the mixed system benefits them the most) accuse the Maoists of delaying the elections when they raise issues of being sold out and then write whatever constitution.

This is a great plan if you don’t want the Maoists to have any representation. Which is why the U.S. and India are so adamant about elections not being delayed now, and were so unconcerned about delaying the process in March. It’s wonderful if you consider your interests to be marginalizing the Maoists at all costs. Many of yours are. However, if you want an actual peaceful resolution to the conflict you might think differently.

    Lessons from our own history:

This is the dawn of the neo-Sri Teen Sarkars of Nepal (GPK, MK, & PK). Just like the Rana bhai khalag, we are now witnessing an illegitimate SPAM running the country at their own whim & fighting for the spoils.

The Ranas used the country for their own personal use. The Treasury was their personal bank account. There was no accountability. They built huge stucco palaces amongst thatched huts. Now the SPAMU is using democratic institutions like the Parliament & the EC for their own political agendas/self-interests. They are all building huge party machinery at the expense of the people. Government and its corporations are merely tools to provide employment to its cadres & natas.

Ranas were never elected. They usurped power. They were the aristocracy. This SPAM was never elected either. These are the political aristocracy. They bartered for seats in the Interim Parliament. Their mandate was to conduct a free & fair CA election. They were never elected. They have failed. Now they want to declare a republic through the illegimate Interim Parliament. They are afraid of going to the polls. SPAM has already divied up the MInistries amongst themselves like the Rana bhai khalag. There is some stark similarities.

During Rana kal, the king was a puppet of the Ranas. He was stripped of power & basically a prisoner. Now he is neutralized & in a constitutional vacuum (not that I am fan of him).

However, everyone has the right to a due process. The Rule of Law is the backbone of democracy. The people were going to decide through the CA election the fate of the monarchy. Declaring a republic from the Interim Parliament is over stepping its mandate. It will give the king the perfect opportunity to state the actions of the Interim Parliament are illegitimate. It will give him & his supporters to either stage a coup or make a comeback even at a later stage since the actions do not truely reflect the choice of the people.

What is needed now is a nationalist party. Forget NC, UML, Maoists. The time is for a NEPALI PARTY. For the people, by the people & to the people. We NEED to rise up. Lets start a real revolution, not some hogwash Maobadi ideological bs. Lets work for us, the people.

    Represent. Represent.

I wonder if these IELTS teachers understand what people’s desire and verdict means. What India ,US wants is not at all significant and what matters is what we people wanted. Majority of nepali populace wanted CA election in it’s present structure and they were determined to abolish Monarchy from it’s history.
Then Maoists scared to death (are they trying to save monarchy is a legitimate question now), come up with long list of demands at the eleventh hour, it was clear then , elections will be defferred again.

You must be sick in your mind to think every political party must get some reservation just because they have ‘sacrificed ‘ their men along the way. Where is the question of marginalizing party A and Party B when all of them were going to face the people’s verdict. If PEOPLE want to marginalize certain party who the hell are you to oppose?? If maoists are daring enough they should opt for absolute one party rule as North korea or Cuba and start another rebellion, and if they donot have balls to do so then just accecpt people’s verdict. And we all know how many ‘People’ they have when they say ‘people’. Cowards deserve not less than another brutal treatment and this time they themselve asked for it.

Maoists has paved the way for third party intervention, it may come in the form of Army or even king may make a comeback. Maoists and SPA had deliberately missed a golden opportunity to give Nepal a peaceful wayout, a transition and the emerging scenarios may not be that peaceful!!

I am with Girija Babu n all peace loving parties and some tough actions must be taken by governments to stop this free riding of maoists. and ppl like Neil should better go and lick Prachanda’s [icd] rather than commenting here. May be Maoists will be pleased by that act.

Neil here, is used more as an adjective rather than just to target one person. It is certainly not against those who have different views but to those who r busy to propagate their fucking nonsense views without even caring what is in best interests of our nations.
