A scene from todya’s Kathmandu Valley Band by Maoists. In Gongabu Both pics by Suresh Nath Neupane
As if the city was their small shop and they were the shopkeepers, Maoists comrades have pulled down the shutter of Kathmandu. Vehicles that were on road until an hour ago (10 AM) have now suddenly disappeared. All of a sudden, Maoist cadres have taken over the “control” of the road even as Nepal police are showing their presence. People are now forced to walk on the streets. Thousands are stranded in the bus stations. Maoists said that they called the instant banda (closure) of the Kathmandu Valley to protest Nepal government’s decision to nominate 14 ambassadors for different countries including the US, India, China and Russia. It seems that the list has only the names associated with ruling parties Nepali Congress, CPN UML and Nepali Congress (Democratic). A few are from civil service. Maoists are set to join the interim government to be formed within weeks if everything goes as planned and it is obvious that they are angry with this childish decision of the current SPA government. Maoists must be accepted as crucial element of the governing structure in Nepal. There is no way Nepal can move ahead sidelining Maoists. The government has nominated staunch royalist like Sailaja Acharya and kept Maoists in dark about the nominations. And general public has to suffer because of the government’s foolishness. Yes, Maoists could have become more responsible and voiced their protest in other ways. Why can’t they hold bhok hadtal (fasting) or sit in protest? Bandas are bad. They hurt people. But we see the government more responsible in creating this situation here. Why on earth Maosits were sidelined in those crucial nominations? The government must backtrack from these nominations and move forward taking Maoists into confidence.

In Gongabu.
The ambassadorial nominees are:
1. USA–Dr Suresh Chalise (PM’s foreign affairs advisor)
2. UK–Bhagirath Basnet (Acting Foreign Secretary)
3. India–Shailaja Acharya (NC Leader)
4. Belgium–Pramesh Hamal (CPN-UML leader)
5. Russia–Surya Kiran Gurung (Parliament General Secretary)
6. Japan–Dr Ganesh Yonjan (Conservationist)
7. Thailand–Navin Prajkash Jung Shah (Former VC of TU)
8. China–Tanka Karki (CPN-UML leader)
9. Pakistan–Bal Bahadur Kunwar (Former MP, NC-D leader)
10. Bangladesh–Pradip Khatiwada (MOFA Joint-Secy)
11. Saudi Arabia–Hamid Ansari (Associated with TU)
12. Qatar—Dr Surya Kant Mishra (University Teacher)
13. Myanmar–Guna Laxmi Sharma (BK) (Health Ministry official close to CPN-UML)
14. UN Mission in Geneva–Dinesh Bhattarai (MOFA Joint-Secy)

I thought the days of Banda were over with the success of April Revolution. What is this? Again, I had to walk for 35 minutes to arrive in office becasue the bus I was coming in was stopped in the middle of nowhere by some people. Now I am tired and don’t think I can work. I am already worried about walking back to home. It will take 1 and half hours to reach.
Last month, ‘I told you so..’
“At the best Nepalese Maoists would be disbanded into Russian style Mafia making a living by extortion/kidnapping etc. Or at the worst, Nepal will be turned into a communist republic similar to Khamer Rouge’s Combodia, where 20 Lakh Cambodians were put to death by those red flag waving group of murderers. We will see what they would do if they don’t get what they think they will get. Don’t hang on too much hope from these killers masqurading as a political party”
Here is one more example of Maoist Mafia..

Can’t imagine how come these muderers can fool so many Nepalese and their party leaders so many times?
This is just a beginning…
It is really funny that the article suggests “the government should backtrack” on the nominations. We always knew that to expect the SPA to be responsible, we are asking for the impossible. However, in this case, these names had been discussed for ages and apprarently everyone else but the we-know-all terrorists seem to seemed to be privy to this development. And now, the terrorists are back to their old ways– making the people suffer to further their cause. All they want to prove is that they are a power to reckon with and the people, willingly or unwillingly, have to forego their urgent matters, a day’s wage, a day’s earning and emergency situations, to “support their mobocracy cause. They have not “ordered” a bandh, they have only called for it. And in the “competitive democracy” that Pushma Kamal so highly talks about, people have the CHOICE to participate. If they don’t want to, they should be allow to carry on with their normal routine and not be party to this silly bandh idea. If the Maoists’ were truly running the people’s movement and if the April Revolution was truly a people’s revolution and if the new constitution is truly to fulfil people’s aspirations, then shouldn’t the SPA and the Maoists stop taking hostage the entire country just to get extra mileage for themselves? But no, they have just turned back a number of motor cyclists who were pleading that they had to attend to emergencies, manhandled taxi drivers and threatened to destroy private vehicles when they were trying to go about doing their business that is so central to their livelihood.
NoPolitics,
Beginning of what? Maoist takeover?
Good Comrades, Good !!! Carry on
Nasty violence is in your blood.
Carry on the protests !!
Carry on the killings and the torture and the extortions !!!
Carry on till each of the Nepalese foreign embassies are occupied by killers among you.
Never let peace to reign….
And for you (political) party people
Recruit as many dears and nears of yours, in the vacant posts.
After all, you have spent all your life getting an upper hand. So why back up?
You need not bother about the country and the countrymen.
You social parasites… coninue sucking.
All the best to you too !!!
This is the just the casting…
The politics starts again. I know we aren’t going to see a better nepal for a number of years to come, i.e. unless we get rid of these bast***s.
May our soul save us all.
Peace
What the maoists have done is totally wrong. But, what the government has done it is also not so good. Why and how sailaja acharya is given the post of Ambassador in present govenment which is formed by the Janandolan -2 and she is always in the against of this andolan ? Should the government have to discuss with the maoists, which is going to be a part of the government in recent future or not before deciding on such crucial matters ?
However, i support maoists they are playing the important roles in nepal now….this government can do nothing without Mr.Gyanendra or India.
Long live Democratic moists.
What does this long live democratic maoists means…
Is it democratic maoist like of China or Lennism of Russia…
Anyway parties are also to be blamed for this bandh for recruiting their only candidates and supporters not waiting for even few days..
Should we expect anything else from both the maoist and Girija? They are both going back to their roots. It is Nepal’s misfortune that we have Gyane as King, Girija as PM and Maoist as revolutionaries. What a joke???
U are right sagarmatha.
Its JUST AN UGLY BEGINNING.
All the dirty hell is yet to follow…
he rashtra dev Pasupatunath…
yo rashtra basu haru lai birodh garne aaru pani upaye haru sikaidina paryo..
eutai tarikale birodh garda garda sabai lai wakka dikka lagi sakyo..
Yo ladi bhayeko Nepali buddi ma gidi (alikati bhaye ni) misaidinparyo prabhu..
Though shutting down the country cannot be said wise, the reaction by the Maoists was obvious.
The government in a sense took decision in haste–though it was too late– neglecting the rebels-about-to-join the mainstream.
Aba maobadi lai pani nihu chahieko thyo, paye!
Now that the peace agreement is signed, of course the government should consult the Maoists for any major decisions. The appointment of the ambassadors has already been a controversy.
But the Maoists leadership should also realize that they should stop frequent bandhs and strikes that paralyze the whole country. During their civil war, this was very normal, but should be stopped now. They are already in the mainstream politics, and things will be resolved soon as per their demands. Everything takes time and healthy discussion.
The new constitution should also include ban of demonstrations, bandhs, chakka jams, and other forms of protests lead by all the political or non-political organizations. These rallies should be allowed but in designated areas only that would not hamper the daily life of civilians.
It is just insane how an ambulance was attacked in Eastern Nepal few days back. Let us now work towards re building Nepal, few major bold steps have to be taken for that. The leaders should have realized this by now – its pity if they have not.
Ursula.
Beginning of an end…
The double face of the Maoist is clear as water!!!!
They talking nice and make peacefull statements but still they are doing constantly oposite of what they are saying.
What is this protes by a bandha? They have no the right to protest to any decision what will made by this government until they are really in the government and when they are stopping there abductions and other actions against a democratic way of life. The Government and the people has to call bandha to protest against their way of behavior.
Remove police posts. Is that democratric and peaceful?
Abducting students for indoctrination. Is that democratic and peaceful?
Criple again the life of so many people of Nepal. Is that democratic and peaceful?
I can make this list very long but everybody will understand what I like to say.
The Government in the other hand has to wait with decisions like they did with the ambassadors until the Maoist are in the Government. This was not very clever what the government did.
The Maoist know that they will lose the elections with no any vote and thats they are going giving fear to the people. Who thinks that the people will vote for Maoist who are going on with their criminal actions is a foolish person.
Fear was always the big weapon of that red idiots who are thinking that they can win the hearts of the people in the way they are doing now.
Dear Maoist,
Show finally your democratic face and help the people to live without fear and in a fait manner. Only then we will and can we respect your intention to follow the way of political mainstream.
Th Maoist are going every week more in violence and I suspect that we are going to war again if this is going on and we cannot blame de SPA who was giving so much favours to them. Soon the SPA like to make tenselves strong in some points they going again in violence.
What kind of peace we have?
Would the Maoists prefer that we leave the crown appointed ambassadors in place until the CA gives them their proportional place in the government? Of course not! Are they going to force their way into leadership and decision making in the government without the people’s vote? They will try to be sure. Will we let them? If so, we deserve whatever comes next.
At present they have no legitimate say in who is appointed to diplomatic posts.
Friends, may be this is also one of a conspiracy from the king? Ha.. ha.. ha…
After all, we can always hide the incapacity and weaknesses of the SPAM by blaming the king for this and that. It is an easy and readymade excuse for all the evils and can be used freely by anybody
But to whom shall we blame for all the evils once monarchy will be gone altoghther? What a pity!
monk -maybe that’s one of the reasons to get rid of monarchy! so that the so called democractic leaders can stop making false excuses and we can focus on their actual performances. just kidding!
Well kirat,
I found your statement quite serious. Actually, that could also be one of those many reasons to get rid of monarchy. Honestly.
This is the problem we Nepali people face, we have no good leaders-the SPA are at fault for greedily placing there chosen people as ambassadors without consulting their now ‘partners in peace’ -the Maoists. The Maoists calling for a bandh are just hurting the poor man on the street-another insensible over the top reaction-which shows that they care nothing for the same people they claim to represent.
That vulture Koirala with already one toe in the grave, even at this hour instead of trying to act like a statesman is acting like the petty selfish politician he really is.
The Maoists-the army should have finished them when they could have (around 1999)- the idiot kings paid put to that.
ursula-not a bad idea huh? especially since they keep on creating unnecessary distractions!
Kirat,
I am just mentioning about our mentality. May be one pretext for inefficiency of our leaders would be finished after the abolition of monarchy but I am sure they will immediately invent another. So, we should try to change our culture of blaming others and should focus to improve ourselves. Even by doing self-criticism, if necessary.
We should not put on blame solely to Jungali. Afterall Jungle behaviour is in their blood and it is their identity. We all are equally responsible for this. Go over the news, features, photos, videos etc of the past few couples of weeks and analyse. Why we are giving attention and respect to the cold murderer? Why Peoples are putting garland to those hells neck? From what deed they came from? What they have done to poor folks? What we got from the so called Peoples ( shame to write this word) war? It is obivious that we are encouraging them. We are welcoming those hells!
So, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DEEDS??
They are the murderer and in fact cold murderer who actually deserve shoot on sight! Thats the real justice!
Prachande, taele kas kas ko hatya gareenas?? seekshak, bedharthee, kta kt, aaemae……..
To some extent, its good that they came back from the jungle but they should be punished in par or higher degree than gynendra!
Also what prachande told last month? He will take Nepal in European standard. This is the greatest joke ever made!! Keep it up killer! Do extortion, do bandha, do big rallies by gathereing school childrens, do the way you are doing……
The day is not far that we will definitely exceed european standard or EURO III. Keep it up you beast of burden! Dhartee ko bhoj!
we musy stop these murders.these are the real terroist and thy wiil not do good for nepal
Tyres were burnt. Those Gases are poisonous.
Maoist are an ARMY, not different that the Nepali Army, only difference being one is in Uniform and the other is not. How do u expect an ARMY to be democratic?
these damn Maoists sons of bitches should be shot in the head.
so when they think the government is violating an agreement they put up this show. What about all the agreements they have dishonored??? Bastards.
It’s pretty clear they are after…. ambassadorial positions, pajeros etc. they are no different they the slim we have. if udaya hussain were still alive i would love to send the SPA, Maoist leaders and the Gyanendra to his torture chambers!!!
screw you Wagle and your moderation. You can change the moderation feature on wordpress you idiot.
Maoists have become an inconvenience, but I don’t think the bandh led to deaths. Lets look at matters with a little less emotion. The fact is that the seven parties accepted the Maoists as their negotiating partner. Now that the negotiation is through, they can’t just ditch the Maoists and expect them to stay shut.
The SPA, in the interests of time, came to an agreement with the Maoists. And that was, and still is, the best possible scenario. If time was not a factor, we could have gone on negotiating forever, until they could extract as much from the Maoists as possible and leave them a weak force. That would be ideal, but most Nepalis didn’t want an endless series of negotiations. Most Nepalis also didn’t want to wage and endless war. So the only option was the understanding.
Yes, its unhealthy that the Maoists are going around breaking things, but breaking things is a lot better than resorting to armed violence. You can be sure that if we didn’t come to an understanding, the Maoists would be wreaking real violence in the villages. ( And so would the military ).
So people, come to your senses. You can’t expect the Maoists to become saints overnight. The only reason that the Maoists are going on a strike is to show that they are still a force
This bloody maoist , they don’t know the peace way to protest against the government they can talk with the government rather than doing all nonsense, giving nepalese people suffer. Do they really realize how much this bandh effect in the society. Basically these people are uncivilzed jungelle and they can not do better than this after all they have taken lives of 14000 thousands people ,lord pasupatinath bless our nation and and I would like to pray the god that please give these jungalees some knowledge to do betterment for the society.
This is exactly the complacent crap that has given Maoists the leverage they so unabashedly enjoy in Nepal today. I had never read such ill-prepared comment in any Nepali blogs as the one I am about to comment on.
“Maoists have become an inconvenience, but I don’t think the bandh led to deaths…they can’t just ditch the Maoists and expect them to stay shut. “
Unbelievable! The inherently flawed perspective of these APOLOGISTS’ reasoning leads to this:
So the SPA – in their effort to concentrate power, which they basically acquired on FALSE premise of people’s revolutionary movement anyway, are now facing their challenge accordingly – not from the King, oh no, but from their own damn ‘eighth’ party. Not in some ‘political’ manner as expected in democratic setting, but rather in the spirit of same discipline and conduct that Maoists are renowned for – threats, violence, fear, agitation, chaos, anarchy etc.
These are exactly the kinds of reasoning that provide legitimacy to Maoists, give them more political capital to change events in their favor without taking any personal liability for their past action. King is tainted, parties are tainted, but the Maoists are scotch-free. Hot damn!
“The SPA, in the interests of time, came to an agreement with the Maoists. And that was, and still is, the best possible scenario…the only option was the understanding.”
Holy macaroni superman! Am I reading this right? Listen: time is always the factor. Where do you come up with crap like that? Has ANYTHING happened independent of time? How can YOU look any socio-political, heck any human events without necessary addressing the opportunity cost – in reference to time – involved in carrying vs. not carrying such projects?
“…the only option was the understanding.”
Again, logical fallacy abound. What is negotiation if not an understanding on some principle points of contention? Yet you say people wanted ‘understanding’ and not negotiation. How can one obtain understanding without attending to the details of demands between two forces, and a negotiation that eventually leads to an agreement between counter parties to abide by the principle of such agreement? Perhaps you mean ‘Nepali people’ are too important to bothered by the details of negotiation, or that they are simply too lazy to go through the inundated and cumbersome process of negotiating. Or that a rather vague principle of ‘understanding’ somehow gives them HOPE that they are right in choosing to overlook the rational process in favor of erratic and absurd one.
Please, mister, enlighten us as you seem to have dug yourself pretty deep into etymological conundrum here.
“Yes, its unhealthy that the Maoists are going around breaking things, … Maoists would be wreaking real violence in the villages.”
Do you really underplay and understate events in your personal life also, or is it that you do so only when Maoists are concerned? Unhealthy as in lethal or unhealthy as in you will gather some fat around you cerebral cortex? Which one is it? Are you so sensitized by Maoists killing, extorting and torturing people that you are willing to overlook anything less as ‘unhealthy’? My goodness, looks like these thugs really have you apologists by your balls.
“You can be sure that if we didn’t come to an understanding, the Maoists would be wreaking real violence in the villages.”
Again, what understanding? That they now have open access to carry our strikes in cities and extort from people and businesses? That they can now legitimately call themselves one of the eight parties and garner political legitimacy without having to undergo any change in behavior – neither in thought, words or action? That they can still act like rebels and terrorists whenever they want and still be taken for a potential political, social and economic rallying force in Nepal? That they falsely claim to represent people while causing unnecessary hardship for those exact same populations who suffer and has been suffering continuously since their war, with over 13000 deaths and 200000 displaced? What understand??? ELABORATE!!!
“So people, come to your senses. You can’t expect the Maoists to become saints overnight. The only reason that the Maoists are going on a strike is to show that they are still a force “
People are only reacting rationally to what has happened; people are only voicing their frustration against hapless and corrupt parties and their homicidal and terrorizing partner. With King and the parties, it is the people that got swindled; between parties and Maoists it is the people that got crushed; with parties and Maoists it is the people again that is paying the brunt of carrying Nepal on their shoulder.
Maoists are not saints? Certainly it is taking you a long time to process facts. Old habits die hard they say, and while parties’ corruption and nepotism becomes a hallmark of Nepali politics, Maoist’s ritual of ‘show-of-force’ will continue even during various democratic processes like CA elections and such. After all, these are the entities that have got people by their balls now; these are the parties that people have resorted to ‘understanding’.
Feri Nepal banda re 17 and 18 gatey.
This is what a bunch of nepalese wanted and this what we are getting. nothing wrong with that. peace pact with freking armed thugs and you expect good to come….. two wrongs dont make a right.
yeah now i finally support that anarchy in nepal. this is what nepal wants and needs.. a total chaos and anarchy. the 19-20 days of hell that we went through because of so called april revolution was right in the mind of every freking so called politically knowledgable crowd and now this is wrong…. fk no. this is right…… hell with whatever the goal is of any given andolan anarchy is what it creates and what is right. more anarchy to the nepalese…that is nepal begged big time for and now that is what nepal gets.
I am a tax payer of a country that provides millions of dollars in Aid to Nepal, this money from my government is sent to Nepal for a purpose whether it is building communication lines, or TV towers, or roads and infrastructure of your country. This money can be utilized well in my country too as there is still poverty there, but my government decides to send it to you considering the poor standards of living and considering how low in the world GDP scale Nepal is in. Yet, everytime there is difference of opinion the first thing that gets done is Vandalism of public or your property. The property such as telephone boxes, or railings, or the donated electric buses, or the donated blue buses.
Someone please give me one good reason why we should continuously provide aid in a country where nothing reaches the people who need it and when it does like the buses, it is destroyed becasue a few people disagree with what the government did. Next, please also provide reasons why the government is now funding an ARMY of Maoists with millions of rupees ? Why should my hard earned money be spent on providing to those people who are destructive and have killed millions. You will be quick and point the fingers at the Monarchy, but our government gave the aid money to your prime ministers not to your King. These are the same ministers that promised you for the past 15 years a better life. They had the opportunity and also the money to do better, what has there been of recent development over the past 15 years, anything? Basic necessities are not being met even now with electricity, water and education.
In a country where half of the population sleeps hungry not much is needed to win over hearts of the people, a bowl of rice and lentil soup is enough for the Maoist to do what they have been successful at doing. With a literacy rate of your country, do you think the voters know what is right and wrong for them or for the future for the country and children ? No, they will vote who feeds them, becasue that even that your government has not been able to provide for the last 15 years while ministers have been busy driving around in expensive motorcades.
The pictures say it all. Holy cow…we are back to the street fighting again.
I think the next best thing the parliament can pass after the constitution is a law prohibiting forced closure of businesses. Such protests are banned in most of the developed world. Thats why they are developed.
We suck a big time because of these unnecessary and uncalled financial burdens…
Well, about 7,000 people were killed with the weapons, amunition and money that the U.S. gave King Gyanendra to keep an absolute monarchy in power. So if I were a Nepali, I would tell you to take your money and stick it somewhere safe.
As for Wagle: Nice, responsible reporting.
I sympathise with the blogger above. Millions and even billions of dollars over the decades have been given in donations to this country, and where do people think this money comes from (the sky?), it comes from the taxes of hard working citizens of the donor nations – shopkeepers, coalminers, drivers, teachers, businesses, nurses, doctors, garbage collectors etc. People here should respect that. I really don’t care whether the governement was right or wrong or stupid in such decisions, but this sort of destructive activities have got to stop once and for all. There are many ways of protesting, besides, don’t tell me that this Prachanda does not have enough clout to pressure the government by making a simple phone call, what was the need for all this show of brut force? Again, it is time our country respect the hard work that has gone in to building whatever little we have with not only our taxpayers money but the tax money of everyday common citizens like us from all over the world.
I’m afraid for certain things excuses have run out.
A “kabab mey haddi” came in between the honest commentator I was referring to and myself. I think this Horning fellow is just trying to divert from the present situation. Again, I repeat we have tolerated this sort of behaviour for one and a half decades, and as we stand now excuses for such behaviour have run out. No use ranting on about the guns this and that government gave, how about the billions that was given by the amaericans over the decades for good purposes? And what about all the other nations? Besides if we did not accept the guns from the Americans we may well have been under a totalitarian Khmer Rouge regime by now. Since they did we have a greatly moderated version of the maoists today.
Any idea Neil, how many were killed by the Maoist, and how many would have died if the US or for that matter a country did not provide any aid to you. India had to provide aid to remove the garbage from the city streets, How many lives were saved and are being saved as we speak in the Teaching Hospital was built by Japan, where Nepalese doctors are being trained ? If the road were not built in Nepal with the help of INdia, what would have happened. IF we did stick our money where we wanted, many would have died and perished.
One cannont destabilize a country without understanding the nature of the people. Give them education and the basic necessities first so that they can survive at least up until the age of 10, before they carry guns for the Maoist. Considering infant mortality in this country, how many can actually survive before the King kills them, and how many are killed when they are recruited into the Maosit army 10 years ago when Gyanendra was not even in Power.
Talking about taxpayers money and donors. I will just focus on the taxes I pay, and as a taxpayer of this country, I agree that the time is now for such activities to end. They should have put this in the interim constitution – no more Nepal bandhs! Protest peacefully if you must but stop hampering the daily lives and livelihoods of the people of this nation. If you ask anybody, they will say no to bandhs. Why has’nt the interim constitution then made it unconstitutional to have bandhs? Is this nation for the eight parties only? Or do the other 90% have a say as well?
Horning,
“Well, about 7,000 people were killed with the weapons, amunition and money that the U.S. gave King Gyanendra to keep an absolute monarchy in power. ”
Besides the really obvious argument asking what would have happened without a resistence to the maoists, let us talk of bandhs and it’s effect.
Over the past decade or so I wonder how much direct and indirect damage bandhs have done? Has anyone made an assessment? The economy must have suffered enourmously, and therefore people suffered. How many did not get to hospitals, schools, work? I doubt 7000 lives can compare to the damage caused by these bandhs. And I doubt that people had the choice to be affected by these bandhs? Bandhs are not the peoples choice, and this includes all bandhs called by all parties. No one is innocent. It has got to stop now.
Hey guys I don’t understand why the people who could defy the curfew imposed by the Gynendra rule(last april), can not come to the streets defying band’s posed by the Maoist, what happened to the people who could face the guns of 90,000 Gyanendra’s army can’t face mere 30,000 armed Maoist. Is it because they know Maoist will send them to fight INDRA’s or YAMARAJ’s autocratic rule.
Tourist, give us trade not aid. 90% of aid does reach the intended objective.
Tell that to the taxpayers of the donor nations. Another reason to stop aid due to corruption on our part as well.
Here is what our “napungshak” PM had to say this morning:
“Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Wednesday said that the recent Maoists activities will have no effect on the ongoing peace process.”
So, no matter what sort of persssure tatics the terrorists use- be it bandhs, walking out of the barracks, coerce people to pay donations, abductions, recruitment of children, show of arms in public, mobilization of student body to create anarchy – our corruption icon is hell bent of taking the peace process forward. In the process, he is holding the nation hostage to the maoists atrocities and is being heavily dictated to play by their terms. No, wonder, Pushpa Kamal is all smiles. He sees Nepal turning into small federal states under the umbrella of a Peope’s Repulic set up in the near future. It has always been the inability of the state to mobilize its machinery in a timely manner to eastablish law and order to provide a sense of safety that has allowed the elements like the terrorists to have a free run.
About 4000 people were killed by the Maoists and about 8000 people were killed by the government over the course of the conflict. Most of those deaths took place after the first round of peace negotiations (and after the U.S. gave the arms), in which the Maoists presented 3 non-negotiable demands.
Which were (you guessed it)
Abolition of the Monarchy.
Interim Constitution.
Election to a constituent assembly to draft a new Constitution.
In other words, If the U.S. didn’t give the arms we would be EXACTLY where we were 5 years ago. Albeit without 7,000 or so deaths.
Not to mention that the U.S. consistently told the SPA to compromise with the king and even to accept his ridiculous offer to name a prime minister during the Janaandolan II.
But never mind, America has done nothing but good for the Nepalese people and the little shits just waste it and can’t show gratitude.
Oh yeah, and be sure to listen carefully to all the opinions of the recidivists on this board, because they are the true representation of the wants and aspirations of the Nepalese people.
We are already in debt of Rs.15000 per person when it was only around Rs. 1000 before 1990. There are changes also occured compared to 1990 but not even near to the minimum desired, and which changes can be considered as usual. So people found no difference in terms of economic and development sector except few enterpreneurs and rich peoples. Some constructions and economic changes occured just because of the economic wind-blow from two neighbours and huge inflow money of donor communities and organizations, nothing more than that. The bad thing about this country is many poorest people residing in rural areas till not yet seen Rs.1000 in their hand and enjoy it from the government activities in their entire life and now they have burden of Rs. 15000 in their head. Lets forget about the grants and donation which might have reached to Rs. 100,000 per person till now. People had already seen the responsibility and accountability of the Congress and CPN (UML) and then now Maoist. India is in its own mood of getting the advantage in water sector and their products’ market, so their help and support is only for their vested interest. Whereas China is least burdered with Nepal. Other countries just helping in humanitarian basis only, not for Nepal’s economic development.
