Painting The Royal Away: We Will Never Forget This

painting monarchy away...removing the word royal

As overwhelming majority of Nepali people are ready to get rid of monarchy from Nepal, people have started to remove signs and symbols of monarchy from public places. Take the photo above as an example. Artists today deleted the word ‘royal’ from a sign board at Nepal Association of Fine Arts (NAFA) this afternoon. NAFA functions under, well, we too delete the word here, _ _ _ _ _ Nepal Academy. In a place where symbols do matter, such development will have significant impact. Man on the right in the photo above is prominent painter Kiran Manandher. The parliament is expected pass a historic proposal on Monday that will drastically cut the rights and privileges of the royals in Nepal. Pic by Bikash Karki

I think everybody should do that. I thank Kiranji for coming forward to oppose the oppressive government of the King. Some artists and singers, poets are still with the King. That is unfortunate. In the 21st century people still believe in the autocratic system of Govt. and beleive in the Chakari of the king.

    Layman,
    Talking about a Coup?

    Consider this:
    Sources for the military:

    1. National deposit: there is zero balance, rather negative in the national bank/treasure.
    2. Revenue, tax: people will not pay a paisa if the military/dictator tries to rule. Civil disobedience again. No party will lend them if they want to borrow.
    3. dollars from UN peace keepers job: will turn to zero if they try to play a game with human rights in Nepal.
    4. Foreign aid: Zero. How much will Pakistan donate?
    5. Foreign investments: zero.

    What can you rule? vacuum?

System change is a long process and it takes a time with proper discipline from all fields whether educated or uneducated. It (Republic) is not that something we read in internet, download and apply with a click and enter key.

Changing a “Royal” tag from everywhere is not a solution… can we change our RNAC ticket in such a way as someone did in the picture. Who will recognize or authenticate our ticket .There will be quite a few of us who will experiece real world scenario of Tom Hank in the movie “The Terminal”. This change has to go through the process, lets legislative body decide on that and give a final verdict on what should it be. Then change those tags forever. I hope that name will stay forever.

Well there are millions of passport issued with the “Royal” emblem. Can we get rid of those as of now?

GPK sick… he needs an immediate treatment.. most probably he will to go to BKK for treatment.. can he and his entrourage go there with new set of passports with out “Royal” emblem on it. What are we doing by removing “Royal” tag on some non-existence orgs.

Kamal Thapa and his gang are behind bar. Head of the security agencies suspended. And now King’s power getting trimmed and will slowly become Zero. The word “ROYAL” getting removed from Nepali dictionary. This is a great move. Three cheers!
Soon Pyar Jung is going to face the worst embarassment of his life. He must be punished too for misappropriating millions of Rupess in the name of defence and security. He is responsible for human rights abuse and army misconduct.
SPA Leaders! Go ahead. Make Gyanendra pay tax and keep Paras under law so he can be punished for being Badmaas! Turn the Narayan Hiti Palace into a Museum, afterall Gyanendra Shah and his family have a house to live. Turn Ratna Mandir in Pokhara into Martyrs Memorial park where people as well as Tourists visiting Pokhara can enjoy the serenity and beautify of the lake.
Go SPA Leaders! Go! This is your chance to show that you really care and prove that you have learnt from the past mistakes. Show that People power is the strongest! We have already made an Example in South Asia.

It takes a long time to change all the names but it is worth. Because they can give a deadline and do it, there is no problem. Those passports can finish within three months. Do you know how many passports are issued per month in whole of Nepal ? So we finish we can continue with that.

I hope these people will not have to eat their words and re-paint the ‘Royal’ back.
The way I see it there will be a monarchy in Nepal’s future. The king will obviously have no power – no control over the military, this expenditure controlled by the parliment etc. But with the way the Maoists are acting I feel the sentiment is for a monarchy with limited powers. People are too scared of the Maoist coming to power.

  19. Layman Avatar
    Layman

Yeah, I think so. Leaders should not be swept away by the Maoists ideology and diktats. They should not do whatever Maoists want. They want to dissolve this Govt., this Parliament and they want to rule immediately. If these leaders do not act very cautiously, a genocide or massacre is in the offing.

So do not let the Maoists come to power so easily. People will not accept them come to power with guns in their hands. from today, King will be tamed, I hope. And we have to start and concentrate on now about how to tackle the Maoists.

Change your title dear blog. This is not only about getting rid of the word “ROYAL.” Nepal Association of Fine Arts (NAFA) also wants to get rid from “royal NEPAL ACADEMY,” instead of staying under that academy and getting no help. As most of you don’t know about, or have not paid that much attention to this issue, Nepali Artists/Painters want their own “Nepal FINE ARTS ACADEMY.” -An ACADEMY dedicated to FINE ARTS-, which almost all countries have got. That’s why Mr. Kiran Manandhar is painting over the words “PRAGYA PRATISTHAN” too. And, you all should support for this.

People like Gule or Gauhle and thul dai- are the bread and butter of Revolutionary parties like- Maobadis. They are, even when they profess to be modern and educated, are confined by the hate, social complex (inferior)and agnst that borders on insanity. Just for the reason – rather than reasoning, discussing the implications and ramifaction of the movement “brought on by threat and intimidation”- they are quick to embrace change at any cost without the inkling of any future consequencies.

Make a way for Bhutanization of Nepal and learn to live with it- Don’t you know- Seven parties/Maoist along with Kantipur was instigated by India in order to take Nepal into its “security umbrella.” The writting is in the wall- and we ” Gauhle and Thula dai” are crying victory over Erasing of Royal and Pragya Pratisthan from the sign board. There you go, you again fail to understand the sublime “propoganda” done by Kantipur. Call yourself anything you want.

Just do not cry yourself hoarse and hark back to the history when all things are out of our hand. Forget this being a land of Amar Singh Thapa, land of Free and brave.

  22. Thuldai Avatar

I think this fear about Bhutanization or Sikkimization is an excuse for Monarchists. I ask SANSAR what could you do when Karan Singh came to Nepal and scolded the King to restore democracy immediately. The King and his cotories were the most anti-Indian but they had to bow down at that time. I personally do not believe in Bhutanization in the 21st century. Only point we all Nepalese should bear in mind is that we must progress economically ahead and only then we can stand up against India or Indian hegemonist designs.

Could not India intervene at the time of Royal Massacre if it would have wanted ? It was a power vacuum at that time and all leaders were thinking that RNA had orchestrated a coup.Even some already had gone hiding. So this Bhutanization thing is only a propaganda by the Monarchits.

Also we have to note that India and China do not want to wage war against each other which will completely stall their tremendous economic progress. The period of hostilities between India and China has already gone. Then why India wants to come into Nepal ? Regarding Indian influence in Nepalese internal politics, our leaders should not bow down to the Indain pressure and they must be vigilent against such designs. That is the only way.

  23. Kirat Avatar

Thuldai is correct there. No way can India turned Nepal into another Bhutan or Sikkhim. Not with the present geo-political realities. This anti-Indian propoganda is spread by the very people who marry of their son’s and daughter’s to Indians. They use this fear of India to slander the democrats and to carry on wielding autocratic power. Dumb Nepalis fall for it every time. I guess some people you can fool all the time.

Anyway if the majority of the Nepali people today are anti-king or anti-monarchy who is to blame? The royals themselves. KG had a lot of goodwill from the Nepali people when he took over in Feb 1. 2005. We were all fed up of SPA and the Maoists and hoped he would set things right. But look what he did. He made a bad situation even worse! The Royal family and all their supporters should take a good look at themselves and the Nepali people before posting nonsense on this blog. The more nonsense you royalists post the more you demean yourselves.

I don’t think that India will even venture for Bhutanization of Nepal after witnessing jana andolan II. Time and again, Nepali people have shown that they don’t want any control from India and just want to be a good neighbour. Any intervention in Nepal would mean an endless war (see what is happening in Iraq).

Erasing the “royal” word is symbolic and the royalist comments in this blog shows their eleventh hour heartbeat.

But there is a sad news today. The house proclamation is being deferred. The SPA is lacking serious homework and careful planning. Why did they announce if they could not fulfill? Or could there be any intimidation from the Army? After all the army chief remains to be suspended (it is mysterious why he is still there). Is there any threat from the palace or the royalists? I don’t think that the government and parliament should worry while making decisions when people are with them.

What we don’t need to guess at is:

Lets be realistic guys, India will not ever try to Bhutanize or Sikkimize Nepal. The current geo-political realities coupled with the fact that the fire we Nepalese are (and India knows that), means that India won’t ever dare to do so. In fact, even if it wanted to, it doesn’t need to do anything, for its us who’ve been Indianizing ourselves. We’ve been doing the job they can only dream of doing.

  34. Kirat Avatar
    Kirat

Yeah I think India is only too aware of the high level of anti-India sentiment we Nepalis have and the problems it would cause them if they tried to Sikkhimize Nepal. One unintentional but good result from the monarchy always painting such a dark picture of India. Anyway in this day and age of globalization of everything including politics such policies like the one India had for Sikkhim is no longer possible. Nepal has a full status as an independent, sovereign nation in the UN and the official eyes of the world. It can’t just be Sikkhimized or Bhutanized -not without our consent at least.

  35. Sweet Weed Avatar

Brave words! However, India does not need to do Sikkimization of Nepal. We have political leaders who are dictated and given refuge by India. We have Maoists holed up in Delhi and controlling from there. We have Indian leader, Sita Ram Yechuri inaugurating restored parliament… We are already Sikkimized!!!

  36. Kirat Avatar
    Kirat

Sweet Weed- Though it’s digusting and true what you have said it’s not the same as losing your sovereignity and becoming a part of India like Sikkhim. Well everyone is at fault for overdependence on India-SPA, Maoists and the Palace. I guess the new generation has to end this pathetic culture.

  38. Kirat Avatar
    Kirat

Well the cultural thing is hard to do away with especially since a lot of Nepali people come from India. But it was not the India it is now (politically). Look even the Shah kings are from ‘India’. Look at the surnames, features and cultures of our bahun brothers – Wagle, Giri, Sharma, Tiwari, Pahadi, Pant, Bhatta, Rawat, etc they sure are not indigenous to Nepal. No offence please but the fact is that culturally we will always have a lot of similarities with Indians. I see nothing wrong in that – as long as we don’t develop a slavish mentality towards India.

    Kirat,
The biggest mistake we Nepalese tend to make (if you ask me its just an excuse to run away from reality) is that we think we are very similar to Indians, both culturally and physically. Bullshit man, we’re not! We know we are slaves to Indian cultural imperialism (if I may call that) and the tale of similarities we tell, is just to provide solace to our captured minds and souls.

    Sweet Weed,
The point is not whether you’re more Indianzied than me or whether I’m more. The point is how much Indianized our country is.
Lets face it, the world hardly knows anything about Nepal. For better half of the world’s population, Nepal is nothing but an extension of India. We need to come up with some extra ordinary events like this recent movement or the royal massacre to let the world know that we exist. Indianization wouldn’t have been a problem had its effect been limited to, well just our culture. But the fact is, it has seriously undermined our identity.

hemuji, I do share your disdain for the Indian bureaucracy. They are the ‘brown sahibs’ who still have the hangover from their ‘white sahib’ rulers. But in general Indians and Indian politicians are fine by me. Until we Nepali’s free ourselves from the ‘big bad Indian phobia’ and learn to trade with them(their market is huge and we should exploit our special relations with them) we will not prosper. Sure India will always have their best interest in mind when they deal with us, but have our SPA leaders, Maoist leaders and the Royalist leaders put the best interests of Nepal when they have dealt with India? Why blame India then? Blame our own leaders first for selling Nepal for their own petty interests.

  47. fanta Avatar

The decision of the people will decide about the future of Nepal. So it is legal way to give the people to decide what they want by vote. Vandalism can be popular for some time and may win but not long last. If maoist get the chance then they might erase many things like king did in the past. This not the rule of law but rather rule of jungle whoever is on upperhand trying to supress the lower one. The way the democratic forces are dealing at the present shows they are also following the same law of jungle as king and maoist. Then what is the difference among the SPA, Maoist and the king then?? If they really want to be strong then instead of taking revenge without conscent of the people they should allow people to decide what constitution they like by giving them choices. If they don’t like king to be in scene then democratic force have right to remove it. If SPA and maoist really respect people then they should more concerntrate in forming two-three constitution and let them decide. It will make democracy stronger not weaker. Let’s more concerntrated toward people also including punishing the culprits with the rule of law.

It is already 15 days and till now people are unknown what they are going to get in the new constitution and what direct benefit they will have. The little frustration already started within 15 days, it might grow day by day and weaken the SPA.
