Changing the National Anthem (that sings the song of the kings) and renaming His Majesty’s Government to the Government of Nepal might seem like cosmetic changes. But these proposed changes symbolize Nepali peoples’ deep hatred to Monarchy. An article in Nepali:

  1. I think in this new cabinet we need to have full time “Defense Minister” whose main (including other) responsibility should be — how to integrate royal military into Nepali military. Where our young patriotic armies will not discriminated against race, language, sex, surname etc. And they will be responsible for elected government not royal families.

  2. Yes there is hatred against the King. Becuase he did not care about the voice of people so long. Actually he was going against all norms of being a human being.

Now Nepali society should change from this revolution. I call it a revolution because there was an unprecedented participation of the people in it.

I would also like to appeal all-not wanly we change the boards of offices to Nepal government but also we change our behaviour and our BOLI. That is never say Hajur, Ayi Baksiyos, Sukala Hoibaksiyos etc to even your Boss in the Office. From now on everybody is TAPAIN whether it is boss or peon.TAPAIN for everybody to evevrybody. There is no big or small. All are equals. There is no Rana or Thakuri or Kaaji etc in the society. Then only respect goes to people who came to street for Loktantra.

  3. (UWB received the following text from Santosh. He says, “If there is a change of national anthem, this song is the right song for the new national anthem.)

  4. this is very great
i am fully support to your opinian, you are right
    very very thank you
    Nepalese

  5. First the disclaimer: I am anybody’s supporter but just an impartial observer.

Now, as Thomas Marks has nicely put, the present state of Nepal is among many things is also due to Indian vindictivenes which always wanted to teach the King a lesson for what they perceive as him playing the “China card” against them.

Whatever flaw the present King has, he is no worse than the party leaders, most of who are currupt as well as incompetent. The present mess is largely as a result of their ineptness.

Maoists are psychopath and murderers who killed a lot of their critics (Ganesh Chiluwal etc) which the King did not do. In that sense he is much better. The mockery that people do to him, they won’t dare to do the same to the Maoists, else they won’t see the light of next day.

Let’s put things into perspective. For whatever flaw he may or may not have. At least we can say this: he is one patriot Nepali.

  6. There has been some interest generated as to why KP Oli is being sent to the
government instead of Madhav, given that KP had in past:

    a. Expressed his satisfaction over King’s intention after meeting him
following October 4, 2002 in NTV programme by declairing in his signature
high pitch nasal voice, “Sri Panch ko dharana ma ma nischinta chhu” ( I am
satisfied with the King’s intention), wherease everybody in the opposition
were unison against the King’s move.

    b. The same KP once expressed futility of movement against the King and did
never participate actively. Even when participated in the protest was eager
to get arrested right away smiling with the policemen and never resisting or
    raising slogans.

    c. The same KP who after Feb 1, 2005 move in BBC interview said, “Tato ragat
le hoina, thanda dimag le sochnu parcha” which gave many an indication of
his eventual defection to the King’s side.

    d. The KP who never participated in any of the street protests actively when
many other leaders were so vocal against the monarchy.

Now everybody is in quite shock how this would Rayamaji has been so
successful in getting himself nominated to lead UML instead of Madhav.

Could anybody care to explain? This KP Sharma Oli, who once told his cadres
that the movement is just for making the monarchy constitutional instead of
against it, has been able to convince the whole UML to nominate him to lead
the new government that has been established solely because of the very
protests which he had doubts on!!!!!!

There is something deep RAHASYA. Can any one explain?????

  7. I do not agree that this could be a good national anthem. Our whole history project is a huge lie industry. We were defeated by many times in the past. In fact, Sugauli Shandhi was total defeat, an utter failure. So, why to become proud about nothing?

Of course, we had moments of pride in the past. Maybe we can use them. But we should be careful.

Let’s begin reconceptualizing our history realistically. Let’s accept that we had moments of shame in our history. This is the way we can be proud and strong citizens of a modern nation.

To come to the national antheme, let’s find out something which is people-centric. Let’s not talk much about the SUN and the MOON in the sky . Another problem is that the symbols of Sun and Moon are associated with specific groups/religions.

I am sure at the moment, but we can find many. Why not to organize a competition on this, where coutry’s poets as well as the general public would participate?

Let’s construct a new antheme, which reflects our NEW consciousness.

  8. KP Oli over M.Nepal anyday. M.Nepal is good for raving and ranting only. Remember how he chickened out of sitting in that committee to investigate the palace massacre? If he had any guts he could have made a difference.

  9. HATRED IS NOT A SOLUTION MY DEAR! IT WAS THE HATRED OF KING TO THE POLITICIANS THAT CAUSED HIM A GREAT LOSS. IF WE AGAIN START TO HATE KING OR MAOISTS OR ANY OTHER, IT WILL AGAIN LEAD TO DESTRUCTION. LOVE CAN WIN, HATE NEVER. AND IT IS ALWAYS TRUE FOR ALL!!!

  10. Layman,
What you have brought up is very interesting… I fully support that changes have to come to our culture. People should treat each other equally not matter which race or cast you belong… respecting each other cannot happen just by putting it in paper but, it has be implemented by all.

  11. Excellent idea!!! Also, how do we ensure the parliament incorporate representation of all (qualified)ethnicities and gender?

  12. Somebody told me that Late Poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota, when he was Minister of Education in K. I. Singh’s cabinet 2013 BS had issued one directives to all to address all TAPAIN. I think it was a right start. But now we have adopted a Samanti Pratha. Some people say Darshan instead of Namaskar. I hate this.

  13. Layman, don’t forget about ‘sawari’, ‘junar’, ‘palnu hosh’ and all that. I even know some Marwari families who have adopted this talk!

  14. Hi,
becare, agai chaplusi_double stands_Dhuangi and bebakup guys will be in cabenet like Mt. Oli, Mr. R. Pande and so on…I think there lots of great guys such as Shankar Pokharel (who has clear vision) to lead this country in UML as well. Mr. Pande from Dhading is even use to work as JASUS for Royal Army_Baireni camp which is near to his house. He is responsible for many murders which time will tell.

Hope other parties can send better guys…

  15. cleardigit,
If KP Oli said those things after the king sacked the elected govt. then it should be taken into account and he should explain… isn’t there a independant media person who can ask him and the UML these questions? Strong independant media can play a very contructive role. Majority of the media were inclined to one party or the other in the so called democracy era between 1990-2002… their views were biased to the party they were representing.

  17. WE need royals…. Only royals can save nepal. Leaders will take their share and leave to banares where most of them belong… We need some one more radical like paras… He is young energetic and if he says sorry for killing few people he should be the one to get job…

  18. full support to “Jungi Nishan Hamro” as the new national anthem!

that songs always gives a certain chill in my heart.. its a really really patriotic song

  19. Dus Barsa dekhi India le nepali maobadi lai pelena….baru kehi help garyo….
MB leaders could freely roam around India even their name lies in Red corner notice……
SPA and MB meeting were held in delhi freely..

In 2007 BS there was a Delhi pact….
Why everytime there is role of India for Change in Nepal???? From 1950s to 21st century???? Can you guys explain this to me?????????

    PS note: I’m a republican….don’t think otherwise

  20. Float Right
Why have all these corrupt power hungry , hopeless, unqualified leaders rule us then. It will be same when they take over.. they will do anything to hang on to the power… worst of all we will have maoist who will rule us same as communist rules north korea, cencored , underprivillaged, uneducated brainwashed and zombies…… lets keep the roayls at least we know they do not need to be more corrupt…. We do need someone like paras…. energetic young and radical…. hail king paras……………

  21. sorry my friends,
i knew praveen gurung and his family personally,
    and prince nirajan as well.
how do u expect me to love the royalties.

  22. Does anyone realise that deuba was the one who asked king to dissolve parliament ; got up to his eyes in corruption ; got tax free pajero for all the MPs ; his ministers were all involved in corruption ; he sold intregity of nepalese people for free weapons; declared state of emergency; maoist grew 100 times stronger when he was in poewer…… What about that?? who is stopping same ofanother deuba getting into power????

  24. Well,
You have got point here. Deuba turned royalist and his wife Arzoo gave interview in npr.org saying “we could not handle democracy , how can we handle republic nation” As per her, nepalese are in no capacity to run the country and must depend upon the king forever, nothing but ceremonial is absolutely necessary for Nepal. Her husband stayed in power throught out the multiparty system. He enjoyed the chair and warmth of the king both. He must be rejected.
Also, cleardigit is trying to tell us about Oli, this is very serious affair.
UML makes KP Oli as their leader and Maoist abduct soldiers in Dhankuta. whats going on?

UML makes KP Oli as their leader and Maoist abduct soldiers in Dhankuta after the ceasefire. Whats going on? Is palace people active again to foil the people’s dream?

  26. Nepalese are so afraid of themselves that whenever they talk thier mind they have to calrify that they are a republican. what a change in nepali political situation? Do you still call it a lokatantra?
It would have been justified if we were in Ratnapark or Kalanki or anywhere in Righroad, afraid of being killed by the maoists by denouncing extremism, but no different in this fourm. It is sad that we are loosing democratic bahaviors that we had in the past as a result of this Maoists revolution.

  27. About national anthem, we need one that does not talk about war or warriors. We can debate how to interpret “Jungi Nishan” but I think it is too fiery and portrays great pride on the flag (I think by talking about different symbols we associate with the religious monarchy, maybe implicitly talking about Monarchy).

We need an anthem that talks about all the people in the country. We need an anthem that is humble. Listen to the Indian national anthem for a good example.

Here is a link to an article that discusses the history and the issues around national anthem written almost three years ago:

  28. I think it is a good idea to change the national anthem to suit the interests of the people. Now that we all have realised the real meaning behind the national anthem, we should be able to voice our opinion to bring forth a change in it.

    About KP oli,
I don’t know if he in fact did something like that during the revolution as to support the king. However, I believe “thanda dimag le sochnu parcha” is something desirable in a politician who wants to lead a country. Things done in haste generally do not come out to be perfect. Moreover, I believe in peaceful activities rather than the destruction of property-private and public as a means to change.

  29. Hi Coke,
You hit the nail on my head. I was scared to express my views on this forum because I had to be so-called-republican. It is obvious how our next door neighbor is playing around and how our corruptocratic (democratic for republicans) and killerocratic (democratic maoist) for republicans playing for self-recognition and hunger by brainwashing the innocent Nepalis.

  31. YES, I AGREE VERY MUCH. WHY SHOULD A NATIONAL ANTHEM BE ABOUT BLOOD (RAGAT) OR WARRIOR. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT PEACE LOVING PEOPLE, THE BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS, OUR NATIONAL FLOWER RHODODENDRON, THE DANCING PHEASANT, DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS LIVING IN HARMONY, THE ONE HORNED RHINO, ETC. I WANT TO BE THE FIRST PERSON TO VOTE FOR REPLACING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.

  32. EVERY NEPALI SHOULD READ THIS

    Voices from Nepal

    BY KALPANA SHARMA
    (The Hindu)

THEY guard our buildings. They work in our houses. They are our colleagues. There are thousands of Nepalis working all over India. Yet, in these last three weeks, when their beautiful Himalayan country has been convulsed with violence, leaving 14 dead and over 5,000 injured, how many of us have stopped to ask the Nepalis in our neighbourhood what they think about what’s going on in their country and whether their families are safe. The tragedy of the human and political crisis in Nepal is compounded by the indifference of the average citizen in this country to what happens there.
This was especially evident over the weekend of April 22/ 23 when tens of thousands of ordinary Nepalis defied curfew and came out on the streets of the capital Kathmandu and other towns demanding an end to monarchy and a return to democracy. Their defiance was met with prolonged curfew hours, and with brutality at the hands of the Nepali security forces. Despite this, people were not deterred. The Kathmandu Post has a striking photograph of women in the town of Bharatpur in Chitwan who organised a mass protest meeting last Sunday.

Yet, if you scanned the Indian television news channels over these two days, you would have had a tough time getting any news about developments in Nepal as the channels gave blanket 24-hour coverage to the aftermath of the shooting of BJP General Secretary Pramod Mahajan by his younger brother Pravin. Even as women, and even young children were being beaten up for exercising their democratic right to protest, Indian viewers had to listen to endless repetition of the same news, including every minor development at the hospital where Mr. Mahajan was being treated. Uninformed, pointless, speculative stories filled the airwaves for hours on end when regular updates on the normal news bulletins would have sufficed. You didn’t have to be Nepali to feel that the Indian television news networks had lost their sense of balance.

    Time to introspect

It is encouraging that the people’s struggle in Nepal has finally led to the King conceding power to an elected parliament and paved the way for a restoration of democracy. But the last three weeks should force us in India to introspect. For too long, Indians have either been indifferent or proprietorial towards Nepal. You sense this even in the attitude of the ordinary Indian who visits the country. As our rupee is stronger than theirs, even a middle class Indian feels like a king in Nepal. You don’t even have to change Indian rupees, as most Nepalis will accept Indian currency. And as many Nepalis who live in Kathmandu speak Hindi, Indians tend to treat the place as an extension of their own country. But the Nepalis note the arrogance of the Indians and detest it even as they say nothing. Until something happens and the anti-Indian sentiment comes out. We are taken aback and wonder why they hate us when we do so much for them.

The reality is that we do not do enough for Nepal or Nepalis. We do not respect the fact that Nepal is a sovereign nation with its distinct history and culture; that the Nepali people have the right to decide what kind of country they want.

I have chosen this week to focus on Nepal because it is, in many ways, one of those unrecorded stories that only emerge when there is a crisis. Some Nepali voices are being heard now because thousands have defied curfew and risked bullets, beating and death. Yet, even these voices are not getting the kind of audience they should, particularly in this country.

I want to end with the posting on a blog by a remarkable Nepali woman, Shanta Dixit, who runs an excellent school in Kathmandu. She and her husband Kanak Dixit, that exuberant and resilient journalist whose magazine Himal made a real attempt to knit together South Asia through our common concerns, were arrested for defying curfew on April 8.

    Making dreams real

Since then Shanta has been released but Kanak and 23 others are amongst thousands still in jail. They have begun posting on a blog: www. chaubise.blogspot.com and here is an excerpt from Shanta’s posting:

What became clear to me as the days passed is that this country is ours to make what we want of it. We must stop playing the blame game because we were as much to blame for not protecting our fledgling democracy as were the politicians. The politicians were so busy trying to unravel the demands of running a democratic system that they noticed neither the Maoists nor the Royal Regime’s encroachment until it was too late.

However, now that we are in this fight onto the end, and the end is surely visible, we need to be ever more vigilant. We do not have the luxury to relax after the current gridlock is solved, because otherwise our hard-won democracy will again be dismantled. We have to help put structures in place and help create an environment where people will be less selfish and work for the greater good.

The last 16 years have given Nepalis ample experience and exercise in articulating what we want. The next decade should be spent in materialising what we now are able to articulate so well.

What Shanta writes is relevant not just for Nepal, but for any country that wants real democracy.

  33. The Indian media like any other media is driven by ratings and what is relavent to the people who read the news. So why does the Indian media owe us by publisizing a story that is not relavent for its readers and does poorly in the ratings?

I think this phenomenon of Indians coming to Nepal and Speaking Hindi and using the Indian currency is also largly perpetuated by us Neplais!
Just in general we invite this Indian culture etc. to completly dominate us. For example you have to attend a wedding in Kathmandu and see just how much Indian culture has dominated.
Not only that … for example the last time I was in Nepal I wanted to eat jeeri sawri … believe me there was no sawri to be found anywhere because KTM has become to Indianized!

  34. … sorry I didn’t finish.
The solution to all this is not be become all paranoid and blame everything on India.
We have to make ourslves (culture, economy etc.) strong!

  35. Had some hope till yesterday but, loosing hope every moment going through today’s news. Some of the news that discourages are “Crown prince’s vehicle clips wedding party bus”- Kantipur Online, PARAS is back again, “Report on Belbari killings delayed” – Kantipur Online, the report was suppose to be out on Friday, “HoR insensitivity disheartens MP’s widow” – Kantipur Online, no mention in the parliament of this HoR being killed by unidentified people, “Parties Sidelining Civil Society: Tuladhar” – The Himalayan Times, Padma Ratna Tuladhar is also not too positive with the SPA. If these types of stuff continues then it won’t take long before we land where we were.

  36. why are we happy?

Why are we happy, i am amazed and at the same time confused. Is it already to be happy, and take out “vijay julus”. Does restored assembly and decision to hold election of constituent assembly are enough. dont we see maoist face under the surface? are they truthful this time, are they trustworthy. have they become trustworthy overnight? baburam bhattarai has commented, “kranti bina shanti dai makhu” but how long can you go on. promise the people that you will not use weapon of extortion, murder and physical harm. can we know how you will manage your weapons, how can we trust you? why should we?
when do we get to be happy? when….?

  37. If one should learn anything at all, it is that headlines are just headlines, it really does not reflect what is really going on.

Just as Toni Blaire recently said –
” Are we facing a crisis – Yes
Are we addressing the crisis – Yes
Are we spending more on education and health – Yes
Is our economy the strongest it has ever been -Yes
Is this going to effect tomorrow’s headlines regarding the crisis – No”

People should stop chasing headlines and be more thorough in their analysis. After all newspapers are just the views of a certain group of people, normally biased for that group. Just because it is written in print does not make it so.
Like the reputable Economists news magazine said – They have analysed and made many predictions over the decades – some of them have been correct, some somewhat correct but many have been wrong as well.

  38. jangi Nishan cannot be our National Anthem. It is another from of worshiping the king.

    Okay!

  39. Can you imagine an old man of 84 is still smart and has started ruling the country. So support him. I hope that he will be affraid of being corrupt because people may kill all Koiralas if they indulge in corruption again. There is only option for us to support the leaders and end the second threat to us i.e. Maoists. I think they must announce that thay are surrendering arms after the unconditional declaration by the Parliament on the elections of CA. If not, war goes on. Now they are talking about the surrender of arms by RNA which is impossible. I think it is a ploy of Maoists to continue war till get the power.

  40. GPK has already taken oath but our media are too slow to report it. AFP and reuters have already published the photo also. What the hell ?

  41. Hey guys New proposal:

Let us take out the face of KING from THE MONEY that we use everyday. Why can’t we have the face of any martyr’s (sahid.. just my suggestion) in them.. they gave their life to bring freedom to us; ain’t they?

    any suggestion?

  42. Thats correct. I fully support your idea. We have to remove him from everywhere including from Narayanhity at the end.

  44. commmander of army should be just an adviser to the PM and House of Rep., (I am not sure-i think there are four command of generals), the three star generals should be given the job of monitering the army and advising PM, four star general, Min. of Defence and House of Rep. and they should work under Min. of Def. and PM., two star generals should be erased, one star generals should follow the command of Min. of defence (public administration),—————(all the laws rules should be made by house of rep., and army should follow instructions according to that)
