Chabahil Protests on Photos

Demonstrators are going on in Nepal for democracy and the Chabahil today is an example what’s going on in the country

By Todd Krainin

The spirit for demonstration for democracy is not less.

People gathered in large number chanting slogans.

The demonstrators were confronted by policemen who made a defense line.

As this demonstrator, many others tried to convince police to let them move forward.

But the police were on duty and arrested a few of them.

Wow ! More & more signs of the police getting on people’s side…

If you all can resist to provocators, you’ll win the match of the century.

Be brave, be wise, respect people’s property…

demonstrations like the one seen in chabahil is now are daily routines of the people in kathmandu. i dont think such demonstrations will lead to any solution in the country. still the main people who are real residents of the capital havent joined the stir and may be they wont because there is so much of disbelief for the seven party alliance.so i think first the aim of this stir should be clear otherwise these demonstrations will soon turn into a group of absurb people.

I am not in Nepal so I cannot say for sure what the ground reality. But it seems that this movement has alot of popular support. I keep reading and hearing that even civil society members, professionals, civil servants have joined the movement… I think people are begining to look past the “SPA leaders are terrible” argument. I think people are beigning to realize that this movement is not in support of the SPA leaders but rather it is in support of a Democratic System!

Sr. I hope you don’t think that Kathmandu is Nepal or vice versa…that would be the same mentality as Girija, Deuba and the King. Nepal has become too Kathmandu centric and once we have democracy I hope the capital is shifted elsewhere. It makes sense to do this in everyway. Let Kathmandu be the commercial capital like New York, let some other place be the political capital. In the long it will be good for Kathmandu and the rest of the country.

It would be great if the King initiated a meaningful dialogue with the democrats. If it is a genuine attempt at solving the problems of the country I hope the SPA reciprocate. The real winner in all this chaos are the Maoists.

    Well, Dear Punditji,

Being proud of own´s heritage is ok but nobody must laden this to others making it official. We must show respect to others to their heritage, way of life, history and perceptions.

This is what we are fighting for and expeting to achieve NO?? through absolute Democracy? Respect others as they are, working together in harmony to solve common problems and thwart common threats??

Well, eating of Beef is just extra beneficial, an add-on in our MEATY MENU we could just gradually build up Bio-meat industry to boost economy in a more organized way, extra source of protein PERHAPS even cater the need of TOURISTS and EXPORT in adjoining SAARC BEEF eating Countires?? Just a thought! GRINS!!

I donot see any concrete theory, evidence even in socalled HISTORIC COLLECTIVE SINDHU-INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATIONAL SURVIVAL WISEDOM TURNED WHAT WE NOW CALL HINDUISM otherwise proved scientifically harm caused by eating BEEF unless it is infected with ofcourse Mad Cow Dieses.

Well the general standard of hygiene applys to all other industries as well NOT ONLY TO MEAT.

Even Chicken and other birds are becoming danger to health without proper hygiene and control as is evident worldwide with SARS and Bird Flu recently and still ongoing.

I am just advocating practical aspects of modern 21st century life style which is universally accepted and which we as Nepalis also CRAVE to achieve shunning all old negative aspects of our common Nepaliness.

Well, disarming Rebels is possible only through giving them position in Security apparatus no other solution, UNLESS some of them choose to do otherwise ACCORDING TO THEIR CAPABILITY.

How it is to be achieved well there seasoned and experienced security analysts in both warring sides as we know hope they will find peaceful solution to it.

Finally not wanting to be arrogant Punditji, if we donot do JUSTICE for all crimes, plundering, discriminations and many such atrocities which we all Nepalese People have been through and still going through then my question is what is the POINT OF THIS WHOLE LOKTANTRIC MOVEMENT to establish TRUE DEMOCRACY ADVOCATING RULE OF LAWS AND EQUALITY??

JUST MY THOUGHT. WE HAVE TO CHANGE NOW OTHERWISE WE WILL NEVER DO.

REMEMBER THE UNFINISHED HALF BAKED MOVEMENT OF 1990 BECAUSE OF IT WE ARE IN SUCH A TURMOIL TODAY.

WELL JUST MY THOUGHT HOPE WE NEPALIS THIS TIME WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMODATE ALL UNFINISHED BIAS GRIEVANCES LOOMING OVER SINCE 300 YEARS THIS TIME COLLECTIVELY FOR NEW REPUBLICAN DEMOCRATIC NEPAL TO LIVE AND LET LIVE IN PEACE AND HARMONY TAKING PRIDE IN OUR OLD PARADISE LIKE NEPAL AS UNITED NEPALIS.

The Royal regime opens fire again in Kathmandu and injured dozen of peaceful demonstrators

The royal autocratic regime’s has intensified its brutal attack to quell the popular uprising in Nepal. The nationwide mass upsurge has been continuing today and hundreds of thousand people staged protest marches. Demonstrations were carried out in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Kakadvitta, Birtamod, Dang, Ilam, Chitawan, Hetauda, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Butwal, Palpa, Dailekh, Humla, Dipayal, Achham, Bajhang, Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Parbat, Rajbiraj, Janakpur, Gaur, Birgunj, Chitawan and many other places. Demonstrators chanted anti-king slogans and burned his effigies. It is said that the royal regime’s brutality has crossed all the limits and now it is time for the national and international community to move fast to save the lives of the unarmed civilians. It has become quite urgent to take actions against the autocratic Gyanendra regime before to face a grave humanitarian crisis.

Kathmandu: while more than 20 thousand people were marching at Ring road (from Kalanki to Balkhu – outskirt of Kathmandu) this afternoon, the royal security forces opened fire, used teargas and lathies indiscriminately at the crowd at Balkhu and injured dozens of the unarmed peaceful demonstrators. Demonstrations were also held in the core city (Ason, Indrachowk, Thamel, Bangemudha, Swayambhu) and number of participants has been significantly increased even those areas. Similarly, people in Gangabu, Chabahil, Kirtipur and Baneshwor also staged protest marches.

Lalitpur: Thousands of people staged protest marches in the core area and chased away the security forces from there. They have like in the 1990 movement declared the ‘liberated zone’ this morning again. Police used lathies, teargas against the protestors. A huge demonstration was held in Satdobato also.

Arghakhachi: thousands of protestors staged a demonstration where police Royal Nepal Army opened a fire and 12 sustained injured.

It is reported that demonstrations were also held in most of the districts head quarters and all the metropolitan cities in all over the country.

Seven Parties announce fresh programs to intensify protest programs

The agitating seven-party alliance (SPA) on Sunday announced fresh rounds of protest programmes to intensify the ongoing pro-democracy demonstrations.

A meeting of the Joint Movement Central Coordination Committee (JMCCC) held in the capital today decided, among other issues, not to pay tax to the royal government.

Stating that the SPA-called nationwide protest demonstrations have gained new height, the JMCCC said it will stage a ‘huge demonstration’ in the capital on April 20.

The parties called on all “to boycott any products and services of those businesses and industries belonging to the royal family and its family members.”

The SPA also appealed to all Nepalis abroad in foreign employment not to send remittances during the pro-democracy protest period.

Appealing for the continuous support for the ongoing agitation, the seven parties requested friendly countries, donors and the international community not to lend any financial aid to the “unconstitutional royal regime.”

Security personnel’s kin joined the pro-democratic movement

Kin (wives, sisters, mothers and other relatives) of the police, army and arm police forces staged a rally in Nepalgunj yesterday and warned the security forces not to use violence against the peaceful demonstrators and extended their support to the ongoing pro-democratic movement. Similarly, wife of a District Superintended of Police (DSP) was arrested yesterday in Kanchanpur while she was attended a protest march together other teachers of the city.

    20 Journo arrested

At least 20 journalists were arrested from a rally organised by the Press Chautari Nepal at Bhotahity this afternoon. According to eyewitnesses, police intervened in a rally of the journalists who were protesting government crack down on the media. About 100 journalists took part in the rally.

    Tourism entrepreneurs staged petition

At least three tourism entrepreneurs were arrested from a peaceful sit-in protest, which was organised by the Democratic Tourism Society Nepal at the Thamel area in Kathmandu this morning. According to Deepak Mahat, chairman of the society, police intervened the programme and arrested and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Mahat said it would organise further protests in support of the ongoing movement for democracy.

    UWB Team,
I have to thank you guys for providing us with regular updates on the ongoing protests. However, would you care to disseminate some news on the crippled life of the people?
I am sure people are getting frustrated in many areas. It is not unusual to see thousands of folks in the streets in a city where the population is millions.
A friend of mine just called home and they said they were running out of money. In a day or two, they will have nothing to buy and they don’t store stuff. They seriously have problem. Now this is a problem for those who have money in banks.

What about those folks whose life is based on daily incomes and those who have been deprived of work?

Can you focus on some of these issues rather than just reporting the already monotonous-turned agitation movement? Just a suggestion….

I agree with hari sharma view. If you watch CNN since last 2 days there are main news is Nepal same as their pet Iraq. When their New Delhi chief Sachindra Bindra came to Kathmandu, he focused the news of movement more than the Charles Heavyland of BBC. And this reporting from CNN giving good support and clear concept of on going pro- democracy movement.

Same time the ground reality is stuffs are running out in Ktm and as well as other cities. Bank are closed, even you have money in bank can’t use and those people who really serve day to day income or those middle and lower middle class, how they will survive in the coming days? I too request UWB focus in this issue. If people are really suffer and news come out then this regime can get more pressure from national and international community.

    ug from papua,
The reason media would not want to focus in this issue is not because of their ignorance. This is because it is counter-productive to the on-going movement. International Media will criticize the SPA for forced closures.

This is the negative part of the movement and I have always been protesting against the way it has been carried out. The vehicles must be allowed to run in the streets and offices should open. People should be allowed to work and earn their living.

And, by writing this, I am sure I am inviting hostility from my fellow democrats who fail to see the reality suffered by other people when they fantasize about the free world.

yes life have been crippled since last three days. very few vegitable on market, prices has gone very high. life has been totally shutdown. people of city has been suffering badly in the name of strike. the SPA leaders given their words to businessmen and civil servents but no such words of relief to common people. is it a some kind of punishment or what? a collective punishment. the political activists has this mischievous idea that more you make suffer the common people, greater the success they will be. this is totally sadistics attitude.

the kathmandu is a metropolitan city, you just can not make suffer to the city of 2 million people, have some respect to the metropolitan city life man.

  31. hari sharma Avatar

Despite what many folks here think, I still have reservations on various issues that have come about in relation to this movement.

For those of you who support violent actions, read this news about bank vandalism. Do you think this is the way to attain freedom? Vehicles have been forced to remain in the garage. Offices are forced to shut down. But for how long? Till everyone feels the punch?

Folks from every walks of life have been supporting democracy and yet the sad tale of having to do without evening meal for those daily income earners does not take a note in the media. Reason? These folks in the media are able to survive this impasse. The leaders are the one who are influential in the media. Girija talks about the movement being his own when the movement has already gone out of the hands of the political parties (who might(take note of this word “might”) have some non-violent programs).

Where are the leaders when the mob vandalised this branch of Himalayan bank?

    Demonstrations continue on Sunday

We seriously need to think about the course of action being followed out here. The leaders are shifting the blame to the ordinary folks by not involving themselves in the movement directly and giving a damn about the vandalism that is taking place. And someone calls me as “mandale” for raising issues like this claiming himself as a democrat. What a rational mind at work!!!!!

Folks criticize the police for baton charge. But they fail to see that they are forced to carry out their duties. If they don’t obey their masters, they are out of their job further disturbing the financial balance of their family. One has to understand that these folks also come from the same background as many Nepalese folks in the streets. They also do not wish to face the stones hurled from the crowd.

So, what are we doing with this all? Who is suffering? The folks who are poor, right? The ones in power are watching it go while enjoying the branded whisky or red wine. This has to change. We should not be dreaming of peaceful Nepal with violent means. It is largely ineffective.

well i m not neglecting the ground reality of the nation. but plz do not compare ktm with newyork or any other cities in the world. ktm will never be like newyork nor our nation we will be like america. the most this stir will do i guess is restore democracy in the nation and that doesnt mean “PEACE”. i think people in nepal are more confused about this.democracy may not be able to ensure peace in the nation because the same old politicians will join the government and who knows another “POST 046 PERIOD” may repeat again. that is why i think the roadmap of SPA is not clear. they are saying “LOKTANTRA” and how do we get that? does that mean reestablishment of the parliament? or removal of monarchy? this is the main question now. gita this is the answer to your query. i think SPA should be clear about this. and i think still maoists problem remains aside even if this problem between kind and the parties are sorted out.i pray to god that our kingdom does not turn out to be any other african nation where they had same situation and now everyone can see the problem they are facing. so this demonstrations should be very clear vision about king, the system and the maoists insurgency. then only i think the problems will be sorted out. but i do agree that people are taking it to the streets and the mass movement is gaining popularity day by day.

Again you are equalling democracy to the SPA. Once we have democracy different voices will be raised and heard and slowly but surely a consensus will arise on what form of government Nepal will have. I am afraid it will take time but there is no alternate to that. The only problem is the Maoist insurgency. It needs to be addressed immediately once this problem is over.

hahahaha….how funny huh kirat. yah its easy to say. SPA will do everything and u think maoists just keep watching huh….they are armed forces. u cant at any point neglect them. so its better to be clear about maoists insurgency… and by the way stop comparing nepal with any other nation. nepal can be a peaceful nation at some point of time but not developed nation. its bitter truth for country like ours.

Sr. If people like you have their way Nepal ofcourse will never become a developed nation. The poverty of your vision is pathetic.

I don’t think you understand english very well too. Who said the SPA will do everything? Who said the Maoists will just keep watching? Who’s not clear about the Maoist insurgency?

Classic idiot. Talking without understanding anything.

your comment ‘ nepal can be a peaceful nation at some point of time but not developed nation. its bitter truth for country like ours. ‘
really hurt me and made me furious but again why should your comment make any difference.
But still…people like u , fatalists and fascist can expect no better.
Maybe u r unaware that world is changing so fast and so dramatically.
maybe u r unaware abt the great leaps made by india, china , malaysia and many other asian countries.
nepal is a small country and it’s downfall and progress are equally rapid.
once we have a strong foundation of absolute democracy, we will have a smooth road towards development.
by the way, we are now in the verge of ‘knowledge revolution’ and the countries will be rated not as developed and developing but as smart and smarter.
oooh i am really dying to see the future free and peaceful and prosperous Nepal.
And i am so sure, sooner or later the day will come. We all have to work to make it faster.

What is that suppose to mean? Is that somehow a unconcious justification for supporting the King?
That seems like one of King Gyanendra’s quotes which are painted on bill boards and put up around ktm.

    To Bhudai pundit,
    on comment no:12

u r proud of your hindu heritage, i donot object—be proud. but why me , a non-hindu is obliged to be proud of ‘your’ hindu heritage.
I too have my own heritage and i am as proud of my heritage as u (or more ‘coz we don’t suppress the less advantaged ones in the name of caste and gender)
if u loathe beef why should i, i love it and my religion lets me. isn’t it ridiculous that i am labeled criminal for having my fav dish just because my illegitimate ruler’s funny religion code objects.

i donot hate brahmins but the ‘brahmanbad’ in you.
i really loathe incrementalist like u. do u need democracy with enough space only to recite your pundityai?
    please this time no compromises…
this democracy should not only address your comfort but the age old suppression of we aadibaasi, janati, dalits too.
incrementalists like u are partly responsible for forcing a mass of suppressed people to hold weapons.

“if we cannot end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”

GUYS DON’T BE FIGHT EACH OTHER, FIGHT WITH AUTOCRACY OF GYAN BAHADUR SAHA. READ THIS NEWS ALMOST 12 HRS AGO. THIS NEWS IS ONE KIND OF INDIAN GOVERNMENT OPENION OF LATEST DEVELOPMENT.

NEW DELHI/KATHMANDU: Feeling the heat of unrelenting protests against the monarchy, Gyanendra met Indian ambassador to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukherjee on Sunday evening to offer fresh dialogue with the political parties.

Subsequently, he called the American and Chinese ambassadors in Kathmandu as well, to repeat the same offer.

In New Delhi, foreign secretary, Shyam Saran briefed the Indian leadership on the offer this evening at a meeting attended by the prime minister, national security adviser and the army chief among others.

The government discussed the implications of the latest development, deciding to turn over the ball to Nepal’s court for the time being.

Nobody in Delhi is particularly impressed by Gyanendra’s offer, which is an extension of his public speech on the Nepalese new year.

The Indian assessment is that this will probably be reflected on the street in Nepal as well. But India will not get in the way of the internal processes inside Nepal, leaving the two sides to work things out if they can.

There are two reasons why this offer might be difficult to pull off in Nepal. First, the protests have gathered a momentum of their own, and an offer like this, without a democracy goal, may not go down well. Second, Gyanendra’s offer is being interpreted as the ruler merely buying time.

There have been reports from New York that the UN Security Council may be taking up the Nepal issue soon, with a view to either a censure or more stringent action. Gyanendra’s actions could be an attempt to stave off this eventuality.

Nevertheless, Indian government believes that its time for Gyanendra to put his money where his mouth is. The protests in Nepal show no signs of slackening but government repression just seems to have increased. So a dialogue without instant results may no longer be acceptable to the Nepalese.

The significant development was the softening of the Army’s stand. While their distaste for the Maoists remains intact, the army believes Nepal is itself at breaking point and they could lean on their Nepalese counterparts to seek a more people-friendly solution.

The meeting between Gyanendra and Mukherjee followed daylong demonstrations by thousands of pro-democracy supporters across Nepal despite curfew and prohibitory orders.

Prior to this, the monarch rarely met envoys from nations that have supported the cause of democracy here. All through the day, the country buzzed with rumours about the palace preparing to re-impose emergency rule.

Speculation about the possibility of Gyanendra taking some drastic measures started after he reportedly held a meeting with two vice-chairman of the Cabinet, Tulsi Giri and Kirtinidhi Bisht.

    hey pundit,

democracy is a universal theme that today even the most autocratic leader needs it’s shade to hide their hideous face.
gyanendra has gone extreme in this context.(too nakacharra)
he strangles democracy and then chants borrowing words frm democracy.

This also justifies the significance of democracy.

    pundit,

fatalism and ‘daas manobritti’ of hinduism are so much responsible for this lousy monarchy.
the stupid beliefs like ‘hindu kingdom’,’incarnation of lord vishnu’ have sustained this poor monarchy.
hindu fundamentalists have always supported this monarchy for their own purpose.

Hinduism is a great religion for it is very vast, resourceful, and spiritual(scienticfic too at some points) . But there are also great shoertcomings in this religion which sometimes eclipse all it’s goodness. so educateed and freethinking logical people like u bhudai pundit should evolve it for better.

reformed hinduism benefits all other non-hindus too.

    punditji,
i am so confused with your reply no: 39. what word have i uttered to support king (why shall i, a janajati , a woman , the most disadvantaged by this monarchy).i have supported absolute democracy not monarchy.

i have not read gyanendra’s qoutes, i donot bother to. if it matched, it’s plain co-incidence.
if tomorrow gyanendra qoutes something similar to yours…can i point my finger to u saying-
“What is that suppose to mean? Is that somehow a unconcious justification for supporting the King?
That seems like one of King Gyanendra’s quotes which are painted on bill boards and put up around ktm”

    bravo……

Bahuns are winning, now we will have bahun president, bahun prime minister, all the high posts in the beurocracy already has bahuns. Most of the jurnos are bahuns. The only place where we didn’t have bahuns was in the army, but that shall be changed.

But I salute bahuns, they have their way thus deserve to be where they are.

First they held the finger of the king and got all the positions, now they feel they don’t need monarchy, they can rule all by themselves feri this king made a mistake of appointing more of other ethnic communities when fulfiling the posts of political nominations, his biggest mistake.

arggghhh bahuns. But I realy do admire their brains. They are smart and cunning.

I am somehow compelled to join’Pundit bashing’. I am brahmin myself but I am NOT proud of what has been done in the name of Hinduism. This whole thing is not about killing cows or worshiping them, it is about the liberation of oppressed. This time, democracy should not only address the comfort of cozy ellite like pundit but also liberate millions of aadibasi, dulits, and deprived people of all casts as Taaya rightly pointed. If this does not happen, history will repeat and we will have another revolution within another 10 years.
