Don't Be Ruthless, Please!

Police is entering citizen’s houses; dragging people out of it and ruthlessly baton charging them. Even the television clips of a few policemen beating a demonstrator continuously is heart-aching

By Ujjwal Acharya

Everything is fair in love and war; but what’s going on in Nepal these days is not war. It’s a movement for the betterment of all Nepalis and no doubt, though police and people are on two sides of clashes they shouldn’t forget that they are on their duty (police on professional duty and people on citizen’s duty) and should at least not try to go beyond the humanity.

I know if would be difficult for policemen to control themselves after blocking so much stones and all, but most of the baton charging clips on television show that one demonstrator is being beaten by several policemen. The scenes would not only increase anger among people but also hatred towards the police as a whole.

At many places, police have entered the citizen’s houses and dragged out the demonstrators. At many instances, they have beaten the onlookers despite their pleading that they weren’t participating. I feel really unhappy about all these.

Similar incident happened to one of my friend who was beaten badly for he was watching the torch rally after the curfew ended this evening. He needed medical treatment for the injury on his head. Nine other were also injured when the security men launched attack on the onlookers at Ghatthaghar.

And the policemen should also refrain from such activities.

Via eKantipur.com

At Kirtipur, two days ago, Deputy Superintendent of Police was stoned by the demonstrators but there was a demonstrator who climbed onto the fallen police office requesting others to stop stoning at him. He was rushed to hospital and was saved from a possible death.

Similar incident happened today at Subidhanagar, where a journalist saved an injured Armed Police from the demonstrators risking his own security.

If demonstrators who are not doing all these under anybody’s control can have such thinking, why can’t the police officers, controlling their juniors, order them not to repeat the incidents?

We never exercised democracy, even we got that 2 times (2007, 2046).

Why we needed to go to such extremes?
Eventually, its a normal nepali on the both sides of this war.

I am not trying to undermine or saturate this protest, we need to continue with same vigor and enthusiam. We can’t turn our backs now after losing 3 people and countless numbers injured.

If we clam down then, tomorrow history of Nepal will ask us question,

Why did u turn our back near the new dawn of Nepall, why?

But, we need to be careful enough not to HURT our own nepali citizens, DONT FORGET HUMANITY IN WAR. I wish we could see same kind of picutres from police/army end too, but wil lbe hard to get one.
BCOZ, even its not their wish to BATON their own nepali brothers and sisters. THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW ODERS FROM TOP. AND you know who is on top – MAD DOG defence minister.

One hot headed man, kills whole nation and its people due to his stubborness. Which follows thereafter are mere the executions of his irrational decisions.

    I remember these quote;
WAR DOESN’T DERTERMINE WHO IS RIGHT,
IT JUST DETERMINES WHO IS LEFT.

But our mahila sahu and his team, dont understnad this fact. He seems to be willing to reign over even these LEFT PEOPLE.

OMG. the pictures are heartbreaking. It’s definitely imp. to point out that journalists have played a key role in this ‘April revolution’ so far.

I hope that ppl get organised into stratetic protests instead of ramming through public property. some ppl seem to be wildly involved in the protests with no knowledge of the purpose or consequences. The purpose is not to kill all the police force in the country! is it?

Why do I want to be a Leader?

I don’t have to be in the front line of the protest hurling stones or facing tear gas.

I have good food and a cozy bed waiting for me when I get back home.

I have enough money for medical treatment should there be a need.

The fight is between the “ignorant” public and the victimized police. I am safe.

Police officials don’t baton charge me, if ever they do, as ruthlessly as they do to the public.

I make the headlines no matter what I do.

Should there be a change in the system, I get the credit; forget those who lost their lives in the movement. I will rule you-you are my servant.

What can be said. KG and puppets have entered into a situation that monarchy in Nepal has become really a curse for the country. I use to believe in the constitutional monarchy but not any more. This mad dog must be punished.

I also believe that MBs are involved directly or indirectly. Like it or not they are also Nepalese. SPA have sat down and tried their best to bring the MBs into the mainstream. I do not see anything wrong with it. What is wrong is the state violence/crime and the torture. Any sensible Nepalese blood of course will boil with what is happening in Nepal. This opportunist Kamal Thapa knows only violence from his school days.

Like what Nepalisongs.info says, this mad dog and cronies should be wiped for good now.

The SPA has done a great job of trying to bring the maoists to mainstream. Now that all the forces have joined hands against the autocratic monarchy, it is sure to end in near future. Some time back, we had some second thoughts of “ceremonial monarchy”, but now we are clear cut. We don’t need it any more.

Let us all defy the autocratic orders of shree pach ko sarkar (government of the king not of the people).

I would like to salute all the brave people of Bharatpur for their great job. The brave ones of Butwal who risked their lives to rewrite the boards with “nepal sarkar” instead of “king’s sarkar”. And lots of respect to the great martyrs who gave their beloved lifes for the shake of freedom – you will always live in our hearts.

Ok. The latest information that I have got from my sources within the RNA is that a meeting was held of the 4 security chiefs, the attorney general and the Chief Secy. They decided to recommend imposition of emergency. However since this decision is a major one, it has gone to Chairman Gyanendra for his approval in Pokhara. Expect some action on this tomorrow.

As I was reading this blog and watching those pictures suddenly few past incident struck my mind.

I am not a politician, I am just a professional and so I don’t remember the precise dates when similar incidence took place in past. I am only talking on the voilence inbetween Nepal police and protesters.

Cruelty of Nepal Police had been always same. I guess it is human nature to forget past and only look at present. Few year back weren’t Nepali people shot to death by these Police at protest rallies when the Political government was ruling the country? People were shot and beaten miserably even at that time. So what is the difference between the Democratic government and the current autocratic government ?

I believe it is the NP which is only responsible for all these voilence against the Protesters. Don’t blame everything on KG. It is the NP which is doing it. They should be taught the values of life first. People do protest in every country in this world but I have hardly seen any policeman throwing stones or open firing at protesters. This is all because we Nepali people do not know the values of a citizens. Whoever runs the government it is always same story.

And another quick question to all. I have been thinking about this for a long time.
Can anyone tell me what is the highest level of educations achieved by our great Democratic politicians ?

I am not sure but I believe that Deuba went to The London School of Economics. What he learnt there is a different story but I do know he attended. As for our Girija Babu I am not sure and I cannot imagine Makune has any schooling except being able to read Nepali. He once proposed that Nepal sell eletricity to China via Email so you can only guess what level of education he has.

But again all that is irrelevent right now! We all know that our current political parties have the brain capacity of an unevolved chimpanzee. Unfortunetly they are the only possible way of achieving a democracy though which we can ELECT new leaders in the future who are better.

It is not the time to have democracy because 1. we don’t have leaders 2. people are not smart enough to figure out who is good and who is not. It is no good following these blind so called leaders. They don’t have any future plans. They all are opportunists.

Like manan said how will leaders just come about? I mean with a repressive Royal regime how will there just be this automatic change?
Let me tell you that in the 1990 era there was chaos, curruption, bad goverance etc. but still if you look at our human development indicators they were actually improving. The villagers were slowly becoming empowered… Unfortunetly our brief period with democracy did not turn out to be really successful but that does not mean the system is bad. There were some positive developments. For example development of a viberant free media etc.
People under the Royal Regime the quality of goverance was no better. There was just as much curruption.
I don’t buy this “oh we weren’t ready for democracy.” Our misfortune was that we had bad leaders. However, out of this recent struggle I think people have learnt to demand greater accountability, transparancy etc. from leaders. Also I think that leaders are emerging like Gagan Thapa.
Also there is the Maoist situation. You cannot allow a Royal Regime to continue on this vicious, never ending path of violence. Besides how can you claim that we were ready for democracy – look at the birth of the Maoist revolution. Clearly people were fed up with Kathmandu-centric elitst rulers.

    Bhudai Pundit:
Just a question for you. Do you still have faith on Deuba, GP, Makune, Gupta et all ? If yes then I am surprised. If no then why are you supporting them coze you know once democracy is restored they are the one who will be in power and believe me they won’t let any “fresh energy” take over them.
We will have same crisis. They are talking about bringing Maoists to bring in main stream just because their asses are on fire in current situation. Maoists were serious problem when Deuba was ruling. At that time why they declared Maoists as Terrorists instead of bring them to main stream? We all Nepali are paying the price of this bloody war. Who will be accounted for all the blood that has flown? Without answering these questions there is no way Maoists can be bought to the Main stream.

The point Rohit is that they may come back to power after this and I have no faith in them. But I have faith in a democracy! Do you not admit that in a democratic system people can make change? The possibility of change exists!
I have mentioned this before but a large part of the failure of the post 1990 era lies with the Nepalese people. We are a very passive and apathetic bunch and we did not DEMAND accountability from our leaders. I believe that now people are more aware of their rights and of what it means to be a democracy. Girija Babu is old he is almost 84. I don’t think he will be relavent in the future. Again once we have a constituent assembly the people will decied who to elect. And I think there are people like Gagan Thapa and a few others who could potentially provide some leadership and vision. Again I have no faith in Girija&Co. but I have faith that things could change – and this change is not a possibility under an autocratic monarch.
Why are you under the impression that the King is a better ruler or he is any less currupt or different then our political leaders?
Just think about the unecesary trips to Africa, the buying of jaguars, Paras’s trip to Austia etc. Its no different. At least if we had a democracy people could be able to critisize that and demand that the ruler be transparent.

To bring the Maoist to the mainstream arena we need a democratic government and a democratic process. The Royal Palace continues to believe that this problem can be delt with by using the military. Clearly it hasn’t worked!

As one of you have already mentioned we are only paving the way where we can select the leader who is ‘literate’ enough to lead us. That is democracy. Everyone should get chance and everyone should be prepared enough to be kicked on his butt. Just lets hope that our leaders have learned enough in this Gyan-Raj phase and they won’t repeat the mistake of the past.

And look at the self proclaimed smart a** trying to “lead” the country into destruction. Leaders need to have a good heart. Maoists insurgency sees its development as number of district offices bomb barded, number of arms caputured number of army barracks and police station destroyed. The state presently sees it’s development(King Gyanendra’s Num 1 priority PEACE) as number of maoists cadres arrested , number of PLA killed, number of peaceful protestors arrested, number of people detained(while most are helpless citizens killed, aprehended, abducted by both sides) Now if the current SPA agitators resort to violence by burning down hospitals, post offices, government vehicles, public buildings, mercilessly beat police(either they be trying to calm the demonstratos down or use excessive force), isn’t this INHUMAN? Fidel,
alright when hospitals will be attacked, when schools will be burned, when mob concentrate on looting rather than the actual protest then yes you are right. Something is very wrong, it is out of control. BUT what is the scenario now ? SPA is extra enthusiastic as it wasn’t expecting to see this huge participation in the andolan which it managed to organized just for the heck of it . Right now SPA feels that it has control, it wants to give that final blow (hopefully) to KG and his regime.

It is kinda funny when you compare this agitation with Maoists or the KG himself. Do you really believe that what is happening in the streets right now are well planned ? Do you think that there is a big operation room somewhere where the think-tanks of SPA are calculating and recalculating all the moves ? Well I don’t think so. This is the inevitable power shown by Nepalese people themselves regardless of any political parties. I have seen with my eyes the people getting out of their houses , defying the curfew just because they wanted to be a part of this. If somebody has a brain of a lizard and hundreds of thousands security personal on his dispose, how do you really expect the condition to be ? Yes if KG steps down now, then only we will be proud to have a peaceful revolution. Otherwise nobody can do anything . So get a grip.

hmm..that picture is interesting. beautiful catch.

Between all these comments, i do see a serious issue for real.

Okay, so ppl are out on the streets with enough guts to talk against KG but do those ppl really know what they want to do with the country if they succeed in this movement? I highly doubt. and when there is uncertainty another strong force is going to overtake the nation (possibly maoists). As for the movement, I say its okay to dance around a leader if HE knows what he wants to do (hopefully a good one) but while we don’t have answers to what politicians have planned for the country, a lot of ppl are blindly dancing around them for some insane motive to destroy anything and anyone.

I guess it has become easier for me 2 talk about this as i sit down in the chair every now and then to see comments creeping in UWB but that’s just my thought.

Like some of us pointed out, I hope the movement brings a way to at least allow more students’ involvement in politics (wonder what’s happening with gagan thapa now?) as they are the educated and evolved leaders we are looking forward to not any of these stupid makune, etc.
Its big time for changes..all kinds of changes. This movement holds the key to Nepal’s future; if handled properly we will head in the right direction if not then we lose a god damned opportunity for a change!

A thought provoking discussion going on here. N I agree with Budai pundit on “democracy” only being the cause for supporting this protests despite everything else. But I agree with Rohit’s point as well..wht after all is said and done presuming and I am sure of the success of this protest..the same old people in a new system. I acknowlege the argument tht leaders come from the same political system..but it is the same young blood trying to change the system, the system changing them..The success of this movement is certain, sooner or later Nepal will see the dawn of a brighter future, so we need the SPA to have a clear vision, a clear road map of where they will lead the nation to. Or else it will be another of those “Nepal creating headlines news worldwide saga” people going back to their nonchalant life..

So wht if KG is outsted today itself..Do the SPA know of their own next move?..We don’t want them to be other victims of Absolute Power Corrupts absolutely saga…All of a sudden they have power back in their hands..they get all over excited and then nothing..Back to square one. People are out on the streets more for the cause of democracy rather than for supporting SPA we agree….but democracy is a system that requires vision to make the most out of it.

OK! For all those people opposed to the present movement for democracy…Rohit. replytoall, fidel, Hari Sharma etc. Please advise me on how you think the country should be run politically, how the Maoists problem should be solved and how this country can be lead to a path of peace, progress and prosperity!

Please use logic in your comments!

    Put up or shut up!

Sure, there is a lot to think about, and we all are in some way thinking there is a homunculus forcasting every outcome and it’s solution, otherwise it will stay a mayhem for the big forces (we all know under what pretence who might come)to sort out.

I SERIOUSLY THINK OUR BRETHEN BROTHER HANGMAN_G’S CALLING FOR FOURTH FORCE IS VERY APT, AND IF THE LEADERS TODAY, I AM SORYY TO SAY MOST OF WHOM ARE OLD HAGS AND HAVE ALREADY “DONE THIS AND DONE THAT AND MORE”, SHOULD PROUDLY YIELD TO THIS NEW FORCE.

THINGS THEY ARE A’ DEFINITELY CHANGING…..

Where are all these crooked leaders? Are’nt they supposed to be leading their own protest? This is why I say, burn their houses down also.
