Talking to Suman Giri of Avenues TV, a Kathmandu-based private network, for the first time since is ouster three years ago, in Janakpur where he went to worship Janaki, ex-king Gyanendra has strongly hinted that the monarchy could be revived in the federal democratic republic of Nepal. Here’s transcript of the interview:
Welcome. How do you feel about the turning point through which the country and people are passing through?
Whatever the people have aspired for is our desire. That is my desire too. Today the common man is feeling insecure, I feel. That is why I pray for peace in the country. I wish Nepali brothers and sisters and people get what they expect. There should be a space for all as soon as possible. The garland on with our forefathers had bonded this country together should not be torn apart.
In what situation the country is now?
I think it is better for you to ask the public and seek their response than me telling that.
Are you active in reviving monarchy?
This is a hypothetical talk. But what people think is supreme regarding monarchy or any other subject of national importance. The people are Gods. All should respect whatever they decide.
It’s been said that you do the politics of power.
No. If that was the case, I would have done that long time ago. I have no intention of doing such thing. That is why we left [the crown]. I feel the people have understood the value and faith behind that [decision].
How are you spending your days?
I have realized that it’s good to live in jungle [re: the Nagarguna palace]. You get peace and time to think. I am worried about the country, the national unity. I am also concerned about general people’s well being and good life.
The people’s love to the institution of monarchy decreased after the complex incident [royal massacre] inside the Narayanhitti [palace] and the [royal] coup [of Feb 2005].
There are two things. One, people also teach you lesson. Those who are called leaders, they have to learn too. May be the people also gave us some message? May be people wanted to see the kings not active? I have learned that lesson. But people should not forget that the king should be taken as a guardian too. Whatever is needed to be done for the country must be done. The situation demands providing security to the public. Reflecting upon that time, [I feel] the situation was different. Today the situation is different. The time has already passed. What we all need is a prosperous and successful country. We all should get united to head toward that direction.
Once king was considered to be God. How is your life as a commoner?
First of all this illusion should be removed that the king hasn’t sought power. The king hasn’t claimed that he is a God. I feel that [impression] is the result of the people’s love and trust. There was never any difficulty for me to go to the people. Not yesterday, not today. I can’t respond to the love that the general people showed to me when I visited Janaki on the day of Ram Navawami in the town Janaki. I must thank the people. What can I say more?
The mystery of the royal palace massacre hasn’t been solved yet. Do you want to say anything on that?
I was not in Kathmandu when that happened. All of my family members who are living now were injured in the accident. Whatever they have said have been come out along with other truths through [probe] commissions. These are the reasons that have put the institution of monarchy in difficult situation. I also want to tell about the Feb 1 [royal coup] action. Looking back, it’s a thing to be thought well if that was right or wrong. Let people decide that.
What went wrong for the institution of monarchy that it is finished?
First, I do not think that the institution of monarchy has come to an end. I feel this is a hypothetical question. If we turn the pages of history, such ups and downs and exits and entries are common. Let the people decide what they want, shouldering their grave responsibility.
How do you find the current system of governance [republic]?
If the people say this is what they need we should also say that it is right. We should say nothing if the people think this is the correct path. But if they are not satisfied with something then that should be discussed with those who are ruling now and they [rulers] should recognize that view and work in the interest of people.
What’s your aim?
Live in Nepal and serve Nepalis. That’s my aim before and that’s my aim now and for future.

Thanks. You have released the origenal expression of King Gyanendra. We, Nepalese people support the heart touching expression of King Gyanendra. In the context of Nepal, the reality is that without monarchy Nepal can’t save. You know- in the absence of monarchy, since 2006 Nepalese people tolerated the worst political practice made by corrupt and culprit leaders. The nation achieved the climaxed height of the lawlessness, theft, robbery, ransom and murders. The corruption is out of control. A corrupt tendency has been institutionalizing as a system. In every criminal case, police have still refusing to register the criminal complaints, sometimes in the face of a court order to do so. Due to the culprit’s regime, the government has failed to reform laws that impede effective criminal investigations into past violations. There is no justice in Nepal, no rule of law and no government.
When they declared republic, the anarchist party leaders and senior most government officials cannot escape justice. The culprit leaders and security officials must be punished. The party leaders thought the movement for democracy was just to rise in power, earn money, loot the country and get more personal facilities. All the political and administrative mechanism has defunct. Experiences are the proofs to reveal that all the political traitors invested their time and energy just for power and to accumulate big chunk of money, land, home and expensive vehicles. Their amassed properties in the name of democracy are hidden in different banks, lands, big houses and business. Democracy has been abused as a ladder for power by the anti-nationalist political leaders. So, we are suffering from the traitors who are in regime.
How could they establish sovereignty just by removing monarchy without any logical and rationale reasons? This would only be a ‘Herculean Attempt’ without any logic and even absurd. History is proof that the kings of Nepal have never acted against the country’s sovereignty. In Nepal opposing monarchy is as easy as it is difficult to support. But those who are true nationalists cannot speak or act by forgetting the ground reality of the country because monarchy in Nepal is related to the country’s unity and independence. If there was no monarchy in Nepal, the Nepalese & Indian religious culture and traditions also finish. So, the expression of King Gyanendra is praiseworthy for Nepalese establishment.

The interview was refreshing- now its crystal clear that Monarchy paid the ultimate price in order to save guard common people rather than get into tussle with bandits cropped up by India by drafting 12 points agreement.
I see all party ganging up on King for just expressing his thought as a common citizens- he did not infringe nor crticize anyone or the party, just stated the facts but even this is too much for quaters who are on the brink of their doom. A prime minister who lost on two place holds the rein slipper as snake, bows to everyone and spends national coffer to cazole, appease and bribe just so he can stay on power. Speak of Federal Nepal.
You may fool once but not all the time. Honesty and truth always pays and its getting evident ever more so now.

I totally liked the interview I am with the king but then again he is free to talk because itโs a democratic county and as they (The political parties) have dethroned him form the Post he will always remain in the hearts of the Nepali people and it showed in Janakpurโs jai jai kar thyo kunai masu bhat khande ra lya ko crowd ta hoian jasto lagyo thyo ta sab dukha paka janta haru hun for the past 5 years under the Political parties fight for the kursi.
The King has simply said its up to the people to deicide Rajtantra lai frita lyaune wa na lyaune matra nothing more than that and these Political Parties are ready to take action against the king why are they scared of him, they made him a commoner and itโs a democratic country and he is exercising his freedom of speech tetti ta ho ni hoina. But one a king always remain a king for ever Jai Nepal Jai Rajtantra
If Gyanendra ever wants to reinstate monarchy, Paras must be put out of the picture.

Well the Kings interview is just fine – as he says ultimately it is the people who decides what they want – besides he did not put up a huge fight and did not massacre thousands of people like the moas to keep monarchy (so I do give him the benefit of doubt – don’t the rest of you?)- he threw in the towel and left the palace – so what’s the fuss.? And it’s true monarchy is definitely still (thereby hypothetical) in the minds of the people whether they want it or not – this is why all the politicians are so reactionary – it proves his point.

Whatever the KING said, it’s his right and the so called Nepali politicians some of whom are Murderers, Kidnappers, Corrupted, Barbarians, Junglis and so on are reacting against his interview. Don’t they know that it is a DEMOCRATIC country? May be they(Politicians) don’t understand its meaning as they are all ILLITERATE. There is not a single parliamentarian who can write an article for the new constitution. They have come to be there because of unfair means. The PM is a JACKASS who lost from two contituencies and yet became the prime minister. Now we can all see the fate of Nepal in his hand and in the hands of these rascals.
Among all the comments, Rajan is to the point. There was a Paras. But in the republic country, now, there are hundreds of Parases. How can our country develop with an illiterate minister who hits a CDO? How can our country develop when there is a deputy prime minister who do not follow bidding process for printing of passports who was appointed simply because Girija wanted? There are many more problems now than earlier. Increase in load shedding is one of the serious new problem in Nepal among all others. No new leaders seem serious about national problems. They are interested in power and money rather than development of the country.

It is interesting to see that quite a great deal of debate is being generated by the ex-king’s interview. But before we support or criticize him for what he sad or did not say, let us analyze why he said those things. I personally think that he is afraid of fading into the dustbin of history if he does not remind the Nepalese people that he is still around. He is also worried that if the political leaders do manage to sort out the terrible mess that the country is in presently with the help of India and the international community, he will forever loose his throne. And finally his hopes of becoming the “Hindu Samrat” can only be realized if India and the Nepalese people accept him – thus his demand for a referendum. God give him some horse sense!
