It is widely believed that overwhelming majority of rural youths, partly influenced by the Maoist Peoples’ War and frustrated by the kings’ anti-democracy activities in the past, want no monarchy in Nepal. Same applies with city youths who are deeply dissatisfied with the monarchy and want it abolished. Out of the 12 medical science and social works students from different colleges, only one supported the idea of continuing monarchy in Nepal: that too strictly constitutional. The kings were never democratic, said a student, they always look after consolidating their autocratic power at the cost of democracy. Other said that the origin of the present king is suspicious and he shouldn’t be given space. These young undergrad students are critical of the government’s handling of the peace process and think that the Maoists arms must be managed so that everyone can go to the voting booths of the constituent assembly without fear. They think that politics is not dirty game but part of daily lifestyle. They argue for the participating of educated persons in politics so that the system could be saved from idiots. Below is an article in Nepali based on my discussion with students of Tribhuvan University that originally appeared in Kantipur a few days ago. Texts and Pics by Dinesh Wagle

wagle,
i can give u the name of other 12 students who support monarchy in this country
anyway its ur blog..its ur call..have fun
“Out of the 12 medical science and social works students ”
they are NOT medical science students..they are only preparing for the medical entrance test..where in the world do u call +2 students preparing for the entrace test medical students???
u guessed it right.. only in dinesh wagles blog 😀
Wagle:
Why do you do this to yourself?
We hear these students batting around terms like “democratic” and “cost of democracy” as if they were experts on the concept.
It might be useful to ask these same students to define democracy or, even better, name one democratic principle or ideal before they preach of its “costs” or virtues.
So far, all indications are that Nepali students define democracy as anything that is not monarchy.
This could not be more inaccurate.
-=blogdai
Wagle,
Wait are telling me that because some students kantipur interviewed you are generalizing which schools support monarchy and which dont. I hope you have a report on which you are basing all these assumptions. Atleast the sampling process and the questions used generalize you findings. What I am trying to say is that it would nice if you presented a proper report on which you are generalising so on. I hope it is not just ask ten students what they think and just generalize the whole school population on that.
‘Nepali students define democracy as anything that is not monarchy.’
So much defied and hated has been monarchy among Nepalese youths, you are right. If Girija in guidence of Moriarty goes on harping of Monarchy and other democratic leaders do not teach the youths democracy, they will catch whatever comes to their hand( or mind) as democracy and Maoists are using this tactics.
Generationh next (I call X) should also learn about other democracies of the world, learn the good aspects of it, then infuse those good aspects with our own democracy. Every generation X has a duty to keep our nation physically and institutionally clean.
Leave it to Blogdai to catch the exact essence of democracy in Nepal.
Raj:
Before Blogdai’s charms sweeps you off your feet make sure you understand what Blogdai’s positions are. He insists that what the King did on Feb 1st was correct. Moreover, I do not agree with his analysis of the Monarch’s revelevence to Nepal – I think it’s highly distorted. But that’s for discussion on Blogdai’s website.
After reading comments on this blog, everyone should have realized by now, ho seriously we should take their votes against the monarch.
the verdict of the people in the vote will show, and therefore it is important that this vote comes very soon and is fair.
Nepal must continue with the monarchy.
Wagle, come on, I will you manage a meeting where dozens of +2 students will argue in favor of monarchy. Yes, for constitutional one, not the autocratic one.
There is not going to be any elections in this country for quite some time to come now. You guys are only fooling yourselves if you believe that some sort of functional democracy will emerge out of this mess of reinstated parliament.
Really, what is going on is nothing but a band in Nepal singing a cover version of a band from US. The students who Wagle sampled can be termed placebo. Not the real thing but they perceive it real. C’mon, join the Bedas and Bhokas
Maoists are terrorists. Only the king can fight with them. Girija and Makune should join hand with the king. Yes, the king must assure not to be autocratic. He should be ceremonial only.
One out of 12 of Wagle’s handpicked students want a constitutional monarchy. This itself is enough of a clue as to the fact that many especially the uneducated people from rural areas still want a monarchy. Many polls have been conducted amongst educated people and uneducated as well from city and rural areas, and 60% still want a monarchy in some form or the other. I’ll bet there are more now after seing the true colours confirmed of the maoist intentions. The facts are people don’t want the King to reign and rule as well. I would’nt doubt that 80% would not want the King in a dual role. But to suggest that people don’t want Nepal to remain a constitutional monarchy is just plain leading mand playing around with all the tricks of the trade of unbiased journalism. Wagle has made no secrets of his personal hatred towards monarchy. It’s infact his agenda to have a republic.
A referundum can decide all this. By the way I also asked 24 people (intentionally double that of Wagle) from around my area of all walks of life and ages and asked them the same republic vs constitutional monarchy question. Nineteen said they still thought a constitutional monarchy is the right choice given the current situation. I guess the only way to really know, is with the peace process finalised, maoist arms set aside and a referendum held.
Scoop,
So if we add Wagle’s and your survey we still have 20 out of 36 for a constitutional monarchy. That’s around 56% for it.
Wagleji,
What a joke you are making in this blog? If you wish Nepal to be the part of India just go and ask some border Indian-influence people then you will get 100% result for merging Nepal into India.Wake up wagleji for fear play. Don’t marginalised journalist in Nepal by this kind of writing.
PLEASE ANSWER, GIVE YOUR VALUABLE OPINION AND DO NOT ATTACK THOSE WITH DIFFERENT IDEAS… THANK YOU !!
1) How can the instigator of the Palace/Coup which took the life of the last Real Nepali King Birendra, be needed for Nepal’s future ?
2) Was I the only one in Kathmandu in Feb., March, April ? Didn’t millions & millions of Nepalis say.. NO TO MONARCHY & YES TO DEMOCRACY ?
Respectfully submitted for discussion..
DM Vandeveer – one thing I agree with you is that there is now no place for monarchy, ceremonial or constitutional, in Nepal.
D.MICHAEL VANDEVEER mike4radio@yahoo.com
Yes i think you were the only one in Kathmandu.
If our present king had anything to do with the royal masacre then why did not you beloved democratic leaders say anything about it then? They were in power then, were they not? I know what you are getting at Mr. (i can not spell your name). You attack our army as human right abusers. Our king as autocratic and our politicians as corrupt. Look if we are stupid enuff to make wrong choices for our country so be it. We will make them as it is our right. You are the kind of writers who will tomorrow claim that the nepalis are no longer capable of running their own state and hence should be merged with india. Whether we have a republic state of Nepal or a system with constitutional monarchy, it will be for us to decide. Murderers like you should stay away from the politics of our country.
Those mandales who are advocating for constitutional monarchy are doing so hoping that one day the monster throw away the constitutional tag and destroy the democracy again to establish the autocratic rule in Nepal. That is as clear as it is.
Nepal, the country, has made the mind that no power whatsoever will be given to the king which automatically means Nepal doesn’t need king, the white elephant. It is high time that this white elephant is chased away from Nepal.
Let janata ko chhoro be the head of state by competitive election. It time to get rid of this genetic autocracy. Actually, we don’t need a king in any name: not constitutional, not autocratic, not ceremonial.
Kirat,
Why do you guys (so called liberals) always announce your verdict on everything as if there should be no say of the people on issues such as this? Let the people decide. Even those who support monarchy are ready for a referendum or an election for CA to decide its fate but why are you so inconfident. Why not wait for the election results before making your ever so supreme proclamation regarding the institution of Monarchy? After all, you do believe that the king has no public suppport dont you? If the king has already been marginalized, has no public support why do you make this issue so important? The fact that it plays such a significant role in you life does suggest that you are not very confident of the election result going in your favor.
Ha, ha…to the joke “let the people decide”..
What the hell do you think people decided in April? They decided to get rid of monarchy. The anthem of April Revolution was down with monarchy, Gyanendra chor, desh chod. There could be no bigger public voice than the one expressed by April Revolution. But some leaders are trying to act against that voice and they need to be checked.
Those who are talking about another referendum on monarchy are doing so in the feeble hope of savign monarchy in any ‘liberal’ form for the time being so that the monster can again rise up and destroy the democracy. We know your intention.
Do you think the king would have knelt down in April had he enjoyed the public support? Where were his supporters when millions of people around the country were hitting streets and asking him to leave the country?? Where were you?? Why didn’t you save your king at that time?
B, err I think you are jumping the gun. I am just expressing my personal opinion. Like you said if the people decide to keep the monarchy that’s fine by me. But my personal opinion is to do away with it altogether.
Mr. Bidhata,’
Even without the king, if the SPAM are not effective or efficient or corrupt or incompetent, some one else (mayb another country) will interfere and hijack both our democracy and the country. Look, do not try to hide the incompetency of the SPA leaders by conspiracy theories against the king. If your beloved spa were competent (even if they had basic skills of running the country or knowledge about constitutions) i am sure the feb 1 move would have never come.
“If the king has already been marginalized, has no public support why do you make this issue so important?”
King hasn’t been marginalized yet. That will be done after we have a Janta ko chhoro president. He is still taking money from the state, from our tax and G P Koirala is providing him our money. That shoul be stopped.
SAVE YOUR DEMOCRACY FROM THE KING AND GIVE AWAY THE COUNTRY TO THE INDIANS.
Well, at least the king is not extorting money from the inocent civilians forcefully. At least he has accepted his fate to be decided by the election for a ca. At least he has accepted that he is not above the constitution. Very unlike the maoists, he is within the law. Today, maoists have a licence to kill, extort and abduct innocent people. Even after signing the agreement, they continue their atrocities and the government is so spineless that it can not even threaten to prosecute those who continue the atrocities in the name of people’s war. Today the maoists are above everything in Nepal. They are gods.
You are overreacting just like Mahendra did in the 60s. In the name of patriotism, he dismissed democracy. You have only one argument: Oh..if there is no king, there will be no Nepal just like Nepali Congress used to say, democracy is Nepali Congress and Nepali Congress is democracy. You should get out of the illusion that the survial of Nepal will be in danger without king. No, Nepal will be there in the absense of Gyanendra and his brat son. okay? Be assured.
And Feb 1 didn’t happen because political parties were incompetent. It happened becasue the monster king was over ambitious and wanted to rule Nepal in autocratic away and hated democracy. Democracy has always given us good life style and happiness. Compare those dark days of Panchayat with those 15 years of democracy after 1990. Even if a war was started, that democratic period is far far better than those dark days of panchayat. Keep this in mind, check your facts: the roads, the education sector, the health sector..everywhere Nepal did progress in democratic period. Even the corruption that came into press was nothing compared to that was rampant in the darkness of Panchayat.
Well thank God the king is out of the way then. But if given the chance to come back to power I think he would grab it and people like you would encourage him I am sure. And I am so sorry that you don’t realise that the king was the biggest extortion agent in Nepal. Ofcourse he extorted legally.
“What the hell do you think people decided in April? They decided to get rid of monarchy. The anthem of April Revolution was down with monarchy, Gyanendra chor, desh chod. Well, your comments amuse me to no limits. Well, if the people were so intent on doing away with the monarch, why did they stop with the reinstatement of the parliament? Why did they not continue untill their demands of a republic state was achieved? And as per where was i, well at home watching news! i believe in proper ways of conducting politics. Look at the state of Nepal now! Well, are we still a state?
And if only andolans were need to change directions of politics in nepal, why even have elections? Which ever party can get the most number of people out on the streets can form a government and this would be your way of doing politics. That would also save a lot of state money spent unwisely during elections for campaigns of corrupt parties. Do you know what the population of Nepal is and how many people turned up in the revolution? Do you know for sure that a lot of them were not actually forced to join the revolution? Do you know what would have happened to your people’s voice had india not played a crucial role? Do you know what is happening now that the india is not supporting the maoists? Do you know the american role during the revolution and the role it is playing now? People’s voice, my as*

“Well, at least the king is not extorting money from the inocent civilians forcefully.”
>>Ha, ha ha. Blind man. Don’t you see king extorting money of innocent Nepalis in the form of yearly budget? Raja ko bau ko paisa ta haina ni, tyo budget ko paisa. What is that if not the legal extortion?
“At least he has accepted his fate to be decided by the election for a ca.”
>> Ha ha, accepted re? Who said? He has never accepted. Usko bas chalne bhaie, he would again take over the government. He can’t and he is helpless. That is why he is keeping quiet and looking another opportunity to kick out democracy. That is why this threat to democracy must be done with for ever.
“At least he has accepted that he is not above the constitution. Very unlike the maoists, he is within the law.”
>> Ha ha. Again, another joke. When has the king acted as per the constitution? Has there any provision in the present constitution that lets king overthrow the democratic elected governmend and bring his active rule? Talk some sense.
Yes, Maoists and king are same. Both act against the law. And both need to be done with. First king…immediately. Maoists are already abandoning the warfare and coming to peaceful politics. They will be tamed by people as soon as king is tamed.
“Today, maoists have a licence to kill, extort and abduct innocent people. Even after signing the agreement, they continue their atrocities and the government is so spineless that it can not even threaten to prosecute those who continue the atrocities in the name of people’s war. Today the maoists are above everything in Nepal. They are gods.”
Very true, Maoists are like an autocratic king. The king claims himself to the god and Maoists, you felt, are gods. They kill people. King killed innocent 23 people in April, detained thousands. Maoists are also doing the same. Both are evil, I agree with you. And we need to get rid of both. Immediately.
“Well, if the people were so intent on doing away with the monarch, why did they stop with the reinstatement of the parliament?”
Because the original plan was that the parliament would abolish monarchy. But some leaders, as I said earlier, tried to act against the spirit of the contitution. I still remember the same Girija Prasad Koirala had said that restoration of parliament would not be the end of the movement but the startign point of the movement. But unfortunately, the parliament couldn’t declare the abolition of monarchy. But people will not wait for longer.
I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE EXISTANCE OF NEPAL DEPENDS ON THE KING. BUT WHAT I AM SAYING INSTEAD IS IF THE SPA CONTINUE THEIR INEPT ATTITUDE AND IGNORE THEIR PRIORITIES, I AM SURE THAT THIS COUNTRY WILL CEASE TO EXIST. GOD, JUST BECAUSE SOME SUPPORT THE KING DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE OR SHE IS AGAINST DEMOCRACY. HAVE THE SPA LEADERS SHOWN ANY SINCERITY TOWARDS DEVELOPING FUNCTIONAL DEMOCRACY? THE GOVERNMENT IS RUNNING THIS CONTRY AS IF SHE WAS HIS MISTRESS.
“GOD, JUST BECAUSE SOME SUPPORT THE KING DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE OR SHE IS AGAINST DEMOCRACY.”
>> Of course, yes! He or She is against democracy if he or she supports king after knowing that kings are the biggest threats and dagers to democracy in Nepal. They are the biggest suckers. There could be no comparision of extortion and intimidation of Maoists in the last ten years to that of the same by kings in the last centuries.
I partly agree with you that SPA has forgotten the priority: priority to get rid of monarchy, intensify pece talks with Maoists and tame those bastards peacefull and bring them in mainstream peace. These two things should be done as fast as possible.
“Because the original plan was that the parliament would abolish monarchy. But some leaders, as I said earlier, tried to act against the spirit of the contitution.”
Why should the parliament declare it, when the people could have done it themselves? it would have been more legitimate dont you think? Are you saying that the movement then was a planned event? all protesters knew what the plan was and hence decided to give the parliament the previlege of doing away with the monarchy?
“I still remember the same Girija Prasad Koirala had said that restoration of parliament would not be the end of the movement but the startign point of the movement. But unfortunately, the parliament couldn’t declare the abolition of monarchy. But people will not wait for longer.”
Well, then the democratic leaders you claim to be the solution to all nepali problems are not working in the spirit of the anadolan? Oh! what a shame? So, there still not honest to the people, are they? Well, it seems no one is going to understand the people now are they? Even after the reinstatement of democracy, things are not looking as optimistic? Shame on these so called democratic leaders who perpetually act against the spirit of the people. I agree with you bidhata. These are a bunch of thugs. We should get rid of them. Let the maoists in. Maybe they will change Nepal. In fact, they have already changed nepal and they will certainly change it further. Good work, bidhata, i am now converted and have started believing in the democratic leaders you have fought so hard to defend. I love you man
You can keep dreaming BIDHATA. The maoists will not join the government with or without the weapons. One one trusts them and they will be chased away from the peace talks by the same democaratic leaders you championed during the april movement. The maoists belong in the jungle and that is where they will die. And even you BIDHATA, wont be able to change their fates.
“Why should the parliament declare it, when the people could have done it themselves?”
>> Now, don’t ask me why should there be a Prime Minister to rule the contry? 23 milion Nepalis can’t seat in the chair of Prime Minister, yar. They need to have one representative to rule. By that same understanding, they need to have parliament (understand their respresentative) to decide on various issues like getting rid of monarchy.
“Well, then the democratic leaders you claim to be the solution to all nepali problems are not working in the spirit of the anadolan?”
>>Not exactly. You can’t generalise by saying all leaders. Some leaders and they are, under the influence of some anti-democratic elements, trying to wrok against the spirit of April Revolution. But even the incompetent SPA is far far better than autocratic king and armed Maoists. Far far better. There could be some mistakes under the SPA rule but not blunders and atrocities like in the king’s rule. Be assured. Don’t expect Nepal to be Singapore in democracy in a few years but you can expect for sure better life standard in democracy compared to that in autocracy.
“The maoists will not join the government with or without the weapons.”
>>Don’t show your desperation here which also happens to be your inner wish. You never want Maoists to be in government..even without arms becasue, for you, that would spell the impossibility of your king returning to power again. But this problem will be solved peacefull and king will never get chance to raise his head in Nepal.
Well, even in the first five months, i can already see the changes in life style. Is this not better than the one year of king’s rule? sure. Of course it is. See, how much we have achieved in the five months of spa absolute rule. What was i thinking? However, Did i say anything about not needing a parliament? Did i say anything about all nepalis being prime ministers? Look may be you are starting to see things. I did not write any of those things. So, you needed the king to decide the pm? So, the king was necessary for the existance of the parliament? I don’t understand you man, first you say that you do not need the king but then you say the people did not abolish the monarchy because there was a plan to not do so? then you say, he was needed because you needed a pm and a parliament? What the hell are you saying man?
You needed the king to reinstate the parliament so that the parliament could abolish the king? What are you on man? and can i have some please?
“Don’t show your desperation here which also happens to be your inner wish. You never want Maoists to be in government..even without arms becasue, for you, that would spell the impossibility of your king returning to power again. But this problem will be solved peacefull and king will never get chance to raise his head in Nepal.”
My wish! my wish is that the SPA do something instead of sitting on their a**es and waiting for another shikhar baarta. I gain nothing by having the king so i do not care. But let us see some skills in running a country from these SPA fools. Let us see some resposibility shown by the maoists towards the genral public instead of killing, abducting and extorting them. Look, even without the king, SPA or the maoists, i would still have to wake up in the morning, go to work and feed my family. But at least this way i can voice my ipinions.
“You needed the king to reinstate the parliament..”
>>>Stop…rigth there…and correct yourself. We didn’t need king to reinstate the parliament. If you think that Gyanendra read the text in Baishak 11 on his will? You must be dreaming. He was forced to read it. And I haven’t said Gyanendra isn’the head of state till now. He is and he needs to be removed from that post.
“I don’t understand you man, first you say that you do not need the king but then you say the people did not abolish the monarchy because there was a plan to not do so? then you say, he was needed because you needed a pm and a parliament?”
Not that you are not understanding me but you are pretending so. You know that people dont want monarchy and they want parliament to get rid of it. That’s it and the parliament must get rid of monarchy.
“See, how much we have achieved in the five months of spa absolute rule.”
>> Ke you cease fire timra raja ka pala ma bhayeko ho? And did your beloved king started this peace talks? Don’t expect this peace talks over in a week or so man just becasue your king couldn’t even made such atmosphere for peace. They are talking and they are talking slowly. Wait and see.
“But even the incompetent SPA is far far better than autocratic king and armed Maoists. Far far better.”
The king was autocratic how? Incompetent SPA could actually fail the nation (if it already is not), and that is far better than what?
“There could be some mistakes under the SPA rule but not blunders and atrocities like in the king’s rule.”
I am sure you are talking about the abuses of army when you say atrocities of the king. Let us see if the SPA can avoid those atrocities this time when they fight the maoists. Well, with other things it is the same is not it? the peaceful protesters are still being arrested by the police. They are still being beaten up by the police. I guess, these can not be called abuses and atrocities because…i really do not know.
“Be assured. Don’t expect Nepal to be Singapore in democracy in a few years but you can expect for sure better life standard in democracy compared to that in autocracy.”
Of course, it will be better in democracy. Our life standard would improve immensely. Matter of fact, it did improve after 1990 did it not? i dont know why these maoists started this peoples war? this nation was already on its way to prosperity with a democratic government faught for by the people in 1990. Of course, our country will not be singapore overnight, it will at least take a fortnight wouldn’t it? After 1990 (our previous democracy) police respected the poor. The judiciaries awarded impartial and effective justice to all. Corruption was democratized and what not.Look man you win. I am a royalist and you are so much better. The king was wrong for his one year of absolute rule and the SPA has been right all along. Even when girija operated that mission (kilo siera or something) he was not being atrocious. Infact, it was our democratic right to be abused by our own representatives. I give up. GOOD NIGHT>
What cease fire? The killings still continue. SO ALL THE NEPALI PEOPLE DECIDED ON THE STREETS THAT THE PARLIAMENT SHOULD ABOLISH MONARCHY NOT THEMSELVES? And explain why they decided that on the street while the maoists were expresing their dissatisfaction with it? Well, if you say king is not the head of the state then maybe he is not? It is your call man. You decide. As far as i am concerned, i think you are making this jana andolan to be a planned thing and that someone from behind was pulling strings. And enuff man, I dont need some self righteous man with his mind made up nagging me without any logic. You hate the king that is the only thing i can understand. I hate you GPK and MaKUNE that is all there is to it. Maybe all of them should be shot. Including prachanda and his chumpcha aswell. Good nite for the last time.
things are to be taken positively and before movign may steps we need to think for thousand times
