Businessman Gyanendra Has Shares In 17 Companies

For the record: Gyanendra Shah is not only the biggest landlord of Nepal but also a businessman with shares in as many as 17 companies. Mr. Shah also happens to be the king of Nepal and if everything goes smoothly Nepalis will be voting to decide his royal fate in the next year or so.

All the shares of Himal Energy are held by Surya Enterprises, a company owned by Prabhakar Shumsher Rana and his family members. Rana is largest shareholder in Himal International Power Corp. 1. I think kings/queens & royalties all over the world own lot of property whether in England or Thailand due to inheritance & at times due to dubious circumstances. However, people do have a right to property in a democracy–both the kinf & the commoner. That is the fundamental principle of a civil society, but, everyone must pay their fair share of taxes, even kings, cause the people provide for their palace expenditure through taxation.

I am no royalist but there is a double standard here. The SPA, Parliament & the Maoists are all hunting for the king’s land, stocks & property. (I am glad this is out in public. The king deserves this publication & rebuke). If using the same rationale, then, there should also be tax filings & property details of the PM & all ministers of government, all political leaders & the leaders of the Maoists.

The law states that all ministers in the government need to release their tax filings & property info within 15 days of their appointment. However, there are ONLY 3 UML ministers (Oli, Gyawali & Aryal) who have provided their wealth details. The Rule of Law applies to all people regardless of their status, caste or class. This is where democracy in Nepal fails is the flagrant disregard for the Rule of Law–everyone is equal.

In addition, there is also something called a Due Process under the law. Someone is innocent until found guilty. This has to be established by the Courts, not the Parliament. The balance of power in a state is to prevent the “afai bokshi, afai jhankri” syndrome. Parliament is always the house of the populace & sometimes “populism” & the mob mentality seeps in. Parliament’s job is make laws & it is the Judiciary’s job to interpret it.

If someone has followed the rules & the laws of the land–even though that person is a king, politician, businessman &/or orinary citizen–& even if it appears exploitative &/or exorbitant, then it is legal whether we like it or not. If the current rationale of the Parliament persists then they have the right to nationalize anyone’s property that do not like. In essence, it is mob rule.

Likewise, the radicals, Maoists have raised millions of Rs in the name of the peoples war, however, there is no accountability & transparency of their financial system. If they REALLY are for the people, then, they should disclose their finances & come clean.

I doubt anyone has the “ghedas” to point that out in a press conference. Let’s call a spade a spade. Enough is enough.

  2. This message rather give negative output than positive in political scenario as well as in economic scenario. It gives the message that no one can earn money and everything should be nationalised or take the propery of the rich people and distribute to the poor people whatever consequence it maybe. Is Kantipur ready to nationalised its property and said saving of 38 crores in different banks? Even Golchha, Khetan and other groups has more than the king’s holding. They have shares in more than 21 big companies, what the hell then? It shouldnot be mean that those who have earned money should be punished or nationalised. But yes they should be taxed well and that should be the message.

  3. But how one has earned needs to be identified rather than making propoganda of particular person.

  4. in my personal opinion, i think king should stay, because once he is out….who will you curse for your miseries ???

  5. Let me divert a little,

I think our players did pretty well in Sri Lanka. We should be proud of them especially when Nepal is facing such difficult situations. However, for those of you who like scandals, do you know that our players and their coaches and managers were put up in hotels outside Colombo, 2 hours or more away? At the same time the high up officials were nicely staying in 5 star hotels. 3 crores was put aside for the accomodation of players in Colombo, I wonder if the PAC will do an thorough audit of this and ask why the key people of the games was placed in cheap accomodation? I hear the parties take a bite ut of this money and so too other corrupt officials who do the bookings.

  6. I don’t know how people estimete and caculate. How a Hotel like Soaltee worth like Rs.550 millions ? In that amount, you can not even buy a Blue star hotel. In TKP, they had given that amount for Soaltee.
Another point, why PUDKE Rayamajhi is talking about taking the statement from the King ? Because, if they can not punish PJT and Katuwal how yjey can take the statement of the King. May be Pudke will go to palace and DAAM RAKHERA DHOGEPACHHI ask, Srakar ko Gaath Ma Kasto Chha ? And ask Sarkar le Halai Bhyeko Jan Dhan ko Chhyati ko barema ke Drishtikon Rankibakshinchha ? ANSWER:
YO MALAI SODHNE HAINA PJT RA KATUWAL LAI SODHNU. TINIHARU NAI SAMPURNA ROOP MA JIMMBAR CHHAN.

Pudke will say:Sarkar bata amulya samaye di baksekoma hami kritangya chhaun. Jo Hukum Jo Aadesh sarkar. Tabedar yesma Santushta chha.

    Yesta le ke Garlan ?

  7. Limbu,

It is not surprising to value the shares of Soaltee at 550 million. Of course the land is worth more in the market. As it is a public limited company the share value is also determined by the share market – unfortunately Soaltee is not so hot. Further, the land price is as per government rates and that too from the time Soaltee was established. If it was to be liquidated then the proceeds will go to the shareholders and creditors as per the shareholding percentage and credit dues. What’s on paper can be more or less in the market. Market values of land can go up and down so the share value is not based on market value but on the original value of the land and other assets as per government rates and the value added over the years in the property and of course the loss or profit carried forward minus depreciation.

  8. I think the diversions from the key issues of arms, economics and good governance is getting out of hand. I think this King issue has been now used way over the top by our parliamentarians and media to divert us from the more crying needs of the day. Even I am getting tired of it. Time to start concentrating on the key issues.

  9. I think in sports, Nepal is in its appropriate place. Because it is fourth in this SAG.In terms of population, it comes after India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Those who have won the medals I congratulate them.

But how far can we go in sports by eating as diet only SAAG and Basi Momo.It is more than what we deserve.

  10. everyone seems to be talking about the significance of Nepal army and the monarchy at the moment. Talking about a ceremonial army (whatever that may mean). yeah i totally agree. Get rid of the army, after all we can not fight anyone anyway. I say get rid of the government as well, after all we can not govern ourselves any way. Get rid of the electoral system, we never have elections anyway. Get rid of the party system because parties act like personal property of certain individuals. Get rid of the maoists because all they do is kill innocent Nepali civilians while avoding politicians, rich people and foreigners (strange kind of a people’s war dont you think). I agree with most of you. Leaders are corrupt get rid of them. King is autocratic, get rid of him. Army is not human rights concerned, get rid of them. Maoists are abusive, brutal and murderous, get rid of them. People protests too violents on slightest of provocations, get rid of them. Good idea don’t you think.

  11. For everyones information, if you bothered to read the article carefully, it just confirms that the King himself has no shares in any of these companies. He has 0 shares in any of the 17 companies and also the Crown Prince has 0 shares in any of these companies. I don’t think someone’s daughter or niece or friend having shares counts as the person concerned having shares in any law anywhere on this planet. This is a misleading article and the media concerned should be punished for it. Anyone concerned about media and their nonsense?
Sorry I take it back, the King does have 10 shares remaining in Soaltee Enterprises according to this article which is worth about Rs. 900 the last I checked the share price of Soaltee.

  12. UWB,
For the record: UWB you have clearly written on the top:
“Gyanendra Shah is not only the biggest landlord of Nepal but also a businessman with shares in as many as 17 companies.”

But the article here and in other media says that he does not have any (except the 10 shares I pointed out), what do you call this – responsible reporting?

  13. Should we also then say, Mr. Khetan owns Khetan group, Golccha – Golccha organisation, Chaudhary – Chaudhary group etc. etc – so now King and marwari friends who established their business under the grace of the Kings in the early days own all the business in Nepal. Therefore, the King owns all the businesses in Nepal although he only has 10 shares in Soaltee Enterprises. Why don’t we grill him on that, how can a King have even 10 shares in any company? We should immediately get rid of him, forget voting and all that crap.

  14. Being rich is no sin- Deng Zhou peng said it, listening comrades, I am speaking to those who slug in the hills and are forced to chat mantra of communism (equalitarian)while their leaders drink black-level whisky and sleep in a softbed with wife in toe.

Greed is Good- guess who said it.

  15. FYI, just some facts-
-Soaltee is techincally bankrupt. Seven years back it had interest/principal arrears of 350 million to the then credit Indosuez. But this could not be done as it was a king’s company
-Do you remember Spice Nepal and NT Mobile saga where one company was unduly favored?
-Paras has been accused of murder.

I would not suggest witch hunt. But its king’s Royal Corruption court which started it. Respect of rule of law has been ignored. Talking of SPAM to purify acts of king is an ‘Holier than thou’ approach. The question is how the national reconciliation will be done among the three parties – Maoists, Seven Parties and the then Monarchy (plus india & us). None of them are clean.

  16. As there is no place where we can place a hope or faith to save this nation from harakari, does that mean Nepal as we know it will be only in history books. A country that was but ruined by infighting, name calling and insulting each other, doubting each other, back stabbing each other- land of fiends, crooks, and traitors. If this is the trend then God do not have mercy on us, just let it be.

  17. “Should we also then say, Mr. Khetan owns Khetan group, Golccha – Golccha organisation, Chaudhary – Chaudhary group etc. etc – so now King and marwari friends who established their business under the grace of the Kings in the early days own all the business in Nepal. We should immediately get rid of him, forget voting and all that crap. ”

what is this blog ? a competition between morons or what ? if the marwari frens of the king hadnt opened up the factories u fool.. then imagine how many ppl would be jobless and futureless.
since most of the nepalese are dumb and spend their life being jealous of others.. like you .who dont have the initiative to give anything to the nation..but rather talk behind him if he ends up successful and .. then talk about the “roots” of his family and shit.. and say hey he is not nepalese..
and why cant a king owe shares ? when in the world has it written.. a king cant owe anything..
u are nothng but a chaitee congress..
    mula bajiya..

  18. Hello Wagleji, beware of the deluge of the royalist bugs here. These fools too accoustomed to suck the blood of the people are again bringing forth the isssues of “nationalism,” “peace” and what not.

Actually, there is one joker called “blogdai.” That insane and racist guy was calling against this blog site a few days ago. And all these insane bugs have started deluging this site. I call him insane and racist because he asks tourists to go to Nepal to “help” the people of Nepal. He thinks that Nepalis are animals (stone-throwing mad)who should be rescued by the “grace” of (presumbly white) tourists’gaze. Note that he is not saying that Nepal is beautiful country or so. He wants to “help” us, we Nepalis. DO NOT forget that white colonists justified colonialism as a “civilizing mission.” Second, the joker called blogdai, who says that he does “research,” thinks that the April Revolution was fuelled by the mass media (Read these royalist stupids’ venom against you and Kantipur). These insane racists do not know that many revolutions in the world including the French Revolution, Amerian Revolution, Chinese Revolution and Ressian revolution took place without the presence of the mass media. Yet, these insane people think that they do “research.” They do not deserve further comment.

Finally, rest assured that Gyane and Paras are dead. Nobody will be able to save them. In the end, these people are coward. Note how coward these people are: On the moment Gyane snatched power, he terrorized the people of Nepal shutting down telephone, Internet and sending millitary for loot (note Nari Hari Acharya’s computer files loot by the army). Yet, when the April Revolution climaxed, Gyane read a “proclaimation” written by his “enemies” (Of course, his enemies are no other than the people of Nepal) You just can guess how coward these royals are. They appear to be a lion; but so coward are they that KATTU MA MUTCHHAN at the very sight of the people of Nepal.

Forget Gyane and Paras. We need to take care of these insane bugs who come in the forms of dacoits; sometimes these stupids think that they do “research.” All they want is old “peaceful” days, when they could loot this country “peacefully.”

  19. B said: “everyone seems to be talking about the significance of Nepal army and the monarchy at the moment. Talking about a ceremonial army (whatever that may mean). yeah i totally agree. A perfect textbook description of the belief of a pure anarchist.

  20. Although no media have said that the King personally has these shares, even I would like to ask – Can we as free and democratic citizens not have and hold shares wherever we want? Are we already so weak as to follow the propoganda of the totalitarian communists? I’m afraid the more the media try and look at free enterprise in a negative light, the more these facist commies will gain ground.
One of the greatest principles of democracy is the right to property which albeit includes shares in the modern context.

  21. Yes king should stay atleast these leaders and maoist can blame him for everything and they can scape from their guilt.

  22. SO WHAT?
    my concern is so what?
being a businessman and investing in multi business is not bad thing. Look and the King of Thailand, King of Saudi Arabia, King of Jordan…. I wonder why the nepalese medias are thich much biased? Honestly I was not surprised by the news that King has investment in multi-companies. Everythings have two side, what is the fact and how the fact is interpreted. I fear nepalese media are just selling their stories by sensetationalizing the fact.

    !Jaya Nepal!

  23. blame the king for everything and become a real patriot.

oh yeah by the way the recent floods and all the natural calamity in nepal right now is also because of the king. or is it not…… abolish the monarchy and there will no more be any natural disater in nepal.

  24. Yo blog ma ta purai nai Rajbaadi mandales ko shashan raicha.Aammai ni ta. Ha ha ha

  25. Old Harke, listen bud- times they are changing surely your ass kissing won’t help and Research you speak of is happening before dashain’s end.

And in the name of people- you will walk the fire with comrades-in-arm to wrong the right of Kantipur and Wagle, just have patience, old mate.

  26. Every issue has a division. We really can’t say which way things will go until we hold elections. However, there is one thing I am sure 99% or more Nepalese will agree on and there is no need for elections on this – MAOISTS SHOULD LAY DOWN THEIR ARMS! Thay talk of the people and claim they talk for the people, so when the overwhelming unanimous majority of the people have asked them to lay down their arms -Why don’t they listen? This is not even a contestable demand from the people, like I said 99% will want it so why don’t the maoists listen? If they claim to be for the people then they should show it by first following the people’s number one and uncontestable demand – LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS! I am sure that this demand is a far far and uncontestable greater need right now then even the demand for a republic etc. etc.

  27. If peace occured with full democracy then we should thank to the Kantipur and Mr. Wagle but if october revolution or civil war occured then they should take the responsibility as well for destroying the nation.

  28. st,

I can’t agree with you more. Like I had said previously, arms is one of the major issues and definitely the top of the agenda in the major issues. I also believe we don’t need elections to decide on whether the maoists need to lay down arms or not.

  29. ??????????? ?? ?? ???? ??? ?? ?????? ????, ????? ?????? ???? ??? ?? ????? ????, ??? ? ????? ?? ????? ???? ???? ??????????? ? ????? ??????, ??? ?????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ???? ?? ? ?? ????? ?? ?????? ??? ??? ????? ???? ??????? ????, ???????? ?????? ?????? ???? ? ? ??? ?????? ????? ?? ???? ????? ????? ?????? ?? ? ???? ?? ?? ? ?? ????? ????? ????, ??? ??? ?

  30. Slamming the king right now is like flogging a dead horse. What’s the use Dinesh? And all you royalists defending the king, please divert your efforts into something more useful.

The most important question of the moment is the Maoists and their arms. Once the Maoists get proper assurance from the UN and the SPA on the neutrality/non-agression of the NA then they must lay down their arms before joining the govt. or before the announcement of the elections to the CA. Ballots and bullets mix as well as oil and water. I hope the SPA has enough guts to draw the line on this issue.

  31. I am not really surprised by the King’s properties. After all the system is Nepal is structured to benefit only the rich and influential. And who else you think could benefit the most (right at the top of the heap) from this? Of course the King. Followed by our ministers and then civil servants … thats the pecking order you see. Lets not feign surprise and lets talk about something more constructive.

  32. All these king and properties etc are items which they want to divert the attention of the people. What is the crux of the matter which has not been solved is the arms management. Let us dicuss the ways and means of Arms hand over Management. I would like to ask the Wagle brithers to give some food for thought. Another issue can be Murai Report on Foreign Policy and the appointments of the Ambassdors in the major capital of the world. Even after 4 months now there is no ambassadors in India, China,Japan,UK and the US.

  33. most r interested in cursing the king for their own frustrations, and also hiding real issues….and saying this does not make one a royalist.

  34. Ok Now we know how much property royal family owns……so also want to know how much property politician has made since last 16 years…..do we know some of the previous ministers have property in US and also in German……how one can build 20 million worth house in 16 yrs …can i get that job too….is it time now to correct our mistake?…..rather then correcting the system is it time to correct ourself……is it time to avoid “Nata Badh” ….is it time for real change…..? if you walk in one of the campus union office still new generation leaders use there connnection for work done….so again are you ready…..

  35. Old harke is back. And so are royalists. The roaylists bugs are daydreaming of prati kranti. dhanna mannu pardaina sathi ho, roaylists virus lai pani anti virus lai dimla ni. last time people didn’t use force. this time around they will be lynched, if they dare come out.

  36. Although I am a new person to post a comment in it but I am certainly not a new to go through the materials published here. It seems to me that most of the people who care to comment in the material are of two extreme polar: either extreme left or extreme rights.

  37. You know guys, the monarchs looted the country for more then 2 centuries and the leaders looted it for a little more than a decade. Both of these should be brought in the light to the people. So let’s not justify a wrong pointing another wrong. One wrong cannot justified by another wrong. Be objective and imperical to bring the facts into the light. Don;t misuse your freedom of expression.

  38. hey guys go to savenepalnow.org
its actually a good site and its easy to navigate. it’s right wing but at least it doesn’t have Wagle’s moderation policy.

  39. Hey Bhudai, maybe you were also the person who was supporting one racist insane called “blogdai” when he (it must be a white “he”) was asking his yes-men like you to go against Wagle’s blog. You followed your master faithfully! Great job, blogdai’s slave!!

Of course, royalist bugs will have place only in the Internet…it is unlikely that they will find a place on the planet (forget Nepal).

  40. WELL! I am not surprised. Every royal family in the world have huge businesses or invested money in companies. What’s more important is that they pay tax. And FOR YOUR INFORMATION: these companies are paying taxes to the government.

Yeah, owning 34000 ropanis of land by Gyanendra’s single family is definitely a MAJOR TOPIC to be discussed. Why do he need such a huge amount of land when 6 feet is sufficient to bury or burn his dead body. If only 50% of these land is confiscated and distributed to Sukumbasis, 50% of the ocuntry’s problem will be solved. And why do we need a palace for him when he has huge mansion of his own at Maharajgunj guarded by securities from all four sides and monitored by plain clothes officers. The palace should also be declared a public property. Kathmandu badly needs a place, a green park where people can rejuvenate after days tiring job. The Naranahiti palace is a perfect place and it’s location is easily accessible. The government will raise a huge amount of money by turning it into a public park.

Gyanendra’s share in different businesses is not as important as making him pay tax from his illegal land and confiscating 50% of the land.

  41. I agree with the likes of st and others. Arms is the main issue.
The republic issue will be dealt with no doubt. For the people who throw the word royalist around, well I am for a constitutional monarchy, call it ceremonial if you wish and definitely not one where the King has any power, only a ceremonial role. If that makes me a “royalist” in your world then that is fine by me.

  42. dear bhai Ramu,
when u r so energetic to lynch royals, also beaware you may also be inviting urself to be lynched by the extreme leftists…..

  43. Two extremes are the main impediments for futher progress in peace process. What is the road map of the Government and Maoists is still not clear. the agreement sent to the UN lacks clarity on the vital issues like management of arms, assimilation of Maoists in the army and the society etc. SPA leaders are the most confused ones in the country who could not carry forward the aspirations of the people.

  44. I totally agree the king has lots of shares in different industry and but did the writer do his research in the tax fraud? wether The King has been paying tax? Mate this is defamation of King’s name.. which I think is stupid idea.. They talk about the shares but they never mention how the investment is helping in employment. “Every coins has two side”. In last fifteen years did the writer do any research on politician how much money they have looted from the people? Did they spend time in finding about the wealth of Govinda Raj joshi, Chi.Ku.Wa, or koirala, they collected while they were running the country? There is nothing wrong for having such a huge amount of wealth by king they are the inherited wealth from last 208 years. If that is wrong then may be we should blame the politician for that. Hey what about the maoist looting the banks which is people’s money and bloody buying the gun to kill the nepali people . when will you educated fool going to point things on those? May be you should be writing article on “should we take prachanda and baburam to court for ordering to kill 15000 innocent people in nepal” How are we going to deal on that situation? King having wealth in not bad as long as it is used for the people but looting the people’s money and using it against them is the problem. Wake up….

  45. THE MAJOR TOPICS

    1. Tha major topics should be arms control and threatening control.

    2. The major topics should be how to unite maoist and SPA to bring peace and pure democracy ( I don’t say full democracy but pure one).

    3. The major topics should be interim constitution.

    4. The major topics should be CA and decision about the king.

    5. The major topics is to be discussed is “Indian Damn” which is the major cause for the flood in the terai regions with killings more than 100 people and effected in million numbers and sick of 100000 numbers.

    6. The major topics should be about Rs 53 billion unaccounted pending of government and misutilization of it.

    7. Major topics should be how to eradicate poverty of 40%.

    8. Major topics should be the burden of Rs. 13000 per person of loan in the head. I think 40% of the poor people who never saw the amount of Rs. 13000 in their life but they are being defaulter of it.

All other things are useless and reporting based on the vested interest only…..

  46. dear dai Madhat,

Thanks a lot for your good advice. If you think we can fight with the rightist royalist or we have fought with them, we sure are able to fight with the extremist lefts as well. Maoists per se is not problem, their holding of gun is problem. if they want to come to competitive politics, as their supremo has claimed repeatedly, it shouldn’t be a problem to anybody. Same holds true with the royalist bugs as well. K. thapa, T. giri and for that matter his master gyanendra shah is also not a problem. come to street, put your agenda before public, if the people support you, run the country.
