Maoists Abduct, Maoists Extort and Maoists Loot: Nepal Army

Maoists abduct, Maoist extort,Maoists loot

While the country is readying itself for the first round of peace talks with the Maoists, the rebels are continuing the activities, some say, they are best known for: extortion, intimidation and abductions. They are collecting money from not only big businesses of the country but also from general people and small businesses around Nepal. And these kinds of activities are happening daily in many districts. Here we present a press released issued today by the Directorate of Public Relations of Nepal Army that details the rebel activities that are clearly against the spirit of cease fire. Below is the translated version of the release:

Sahani is the former VCD Chairman and activist of Nepali Congress. His wife got injured in the blast. Maoists abducted two sons of Sahani and took them to unknown location.

Maoists abduct general people:

2. Maoists abducted five youths from Campus Road area of Dhangadi municipality (Kailali district) in May 21 and took to unknown location.

3. Maoists abducted Manoj Yadav, a resident of Dharmapur area (Saptari district) and took him to unknown place.

Maoists beat businessmen:

4. Maoists mercilessly beat a local businessman of Bhairavnath VDC, Bajhang district in May 20.

Maoists Extort Money:

5. Maoists have extorted money from local businessmen in different places of Bhajang district in May 20.

6. On the same day, Maoists extorted money from local merchants of Phattepur bazaar (Saptari district) and each shop of Chautara (Sindhupalchowk district) and its surrounding areas.

7. On the same day, Maoists forcefully demanded money from teachers, students, civil servents, intellectuals and local residents of Kolti Bazaar area of Bajura district.

No surprise here. The people of Nepal have been bamboozled into thinking that their own security forces are the enemy while the Maoists advance unopposed. Wake up!

It just shows Prachandra, baburam etc don’t have control over their lower level Maoists. Coz they are not listening to anything their top level is saying. Those low level maoists are used to with extortion, kidnap, and killing. They don’t want to work in future they just want to fight like in hindi movie.

No matter what, maoist will continue to be terrorist. They think it is their duty to terrorize people. This is why it is important to disarm maoists before talks are held. Maoist leaders are taking a big advantage of this political change. They have found a huge safe landing. If Prachanda and Baburam considers the overthrowing of Gyanendra’s regime as a victory, Shame on them.! What did they do during 12 years of war? Killed innocent people, destroyed national infrastructure, looted poor people’s house while Gyanendra and his loyal dogs roamed around in the county side giving fake promises. What did your armed revolution do to get this country rid of Gyanendra’s autocratic regime? Nothing… completely nothing.
Whereas, people’s peaceful movement of just 19 days overthrew the regime and now you think it is your victory! Ha ha shame on you Prachanda. shame on you baburam. You should have learnt this a long time ago that guns can bring no change. Voilence can only bring more violence. Only peaceful voice will. And this has been proved in front of your very eyes recently. Tell your jungle boys and girls to stop harassing the innocent people NOW! or else you are not any better than Gyanendra. You can’t rebuild that infrastructure your jungle boys and girls have destroyed in last 12 years. You can never bring those good people back who became victims of your rotten agenda. But at least you can order ceasefire and a true ceasefire where your men and women put down arms. Before the SPA government ask you to do so, you declare arms-put down and this will atleast repair your damaged reputation or otherwise hang yourself and don’t show us your face.

Bideshi, You are pretty one track minded huh? The security forces have yet to prove that they are the friend or the defender of the people of Nepal. I sincerely hope they do so if the situation ever arises again-but so far no,nien, nyet, non. They were fighting for their master KG not us, and their orders were not to wipe out the Maoists totally otherwise KG would have very little exuse for taking power.

As for the Maoists yeah they are a pretty brutal force. Given the opportunity they would slit our throats if we opposed them/their ideas. But they can’t continue like this forever…the top leadership knows it and in my opinion is looking for a soft landing. But they are still in a position of strength-not overwhelming strength-and trying to bargain for as much as possible. Meanwhile they are not in total control of their cadres who might have their own agendas. However once the brains of the PLA and the Maoists are neutralized and an effective military action against the rebel factions that want to keep on fighting are undertaken-an end to this long festering problem should be in sight.

Bideshi : True, that is why if you have read my previous posts you will see that I have been shouting myself hoarse that the Army must be revamped asap. I repeat again : The old incompetent top brass loyal to the palace must be retired, the Army must be made loyal to the parliament and the people (re-indoctrination and proper selection of bosses), promotion must be based on merit and not family name, all help available(from the US, India and UK) must be taken to make the Army thoroughly modern and professional(better training, better arms and equipment).

Having grown up in the barracks I have always believed that a modern, professional, skilled army, loyal to the people via the parliament is the only deterrent to these Maoists and any group of people who might think an armed revolt is the way forward.

It is already late to talk about inviting the UN Force. I am against the Indian forces participating in it because of some apparent reasons.Because we nepalese never like the high handedness of Indians in Nepal.Even in rural areas of Nepal, nobody likes Indians.

It is already too late to think and discuss about the modalities for diployment of UN Foreces.

I don’t believe we need a UN Force. A strong observation team would be fine. Their presence would be deterrent enough. I think this is what is going to happen. Read the news.

    Another strong possibility –

Maoists are extorting money because they need a lot of resources to influence the outcome of CA. Its a full fledged PR job and opinions need to be mobilized from the grassroots level. They also need extra resources to hold to their own in a crucial time such as this when they want to be in a position of strength to get the best deals.

All these need a lot of money and given their 10 yr struggle, they will stop at nothing now.

  21. sudeep Avatar

maoists when underground use to take money in the past too but that was secret
but now this is happening publicly because they have declared ceasefire
how could they feed on their army without exorting money

As Laxmi and others expressed earlier, the government or other agencies could provide some development works (or reconstruction of public properties that they themselves damaged earlier) to Maiost militias that way they will be busy in some constructive work.

Remember, Great American president Franklin D Roosevelt just started building some roads, bridges, dams to employ thousands of unemployed youths during the great depression in early 1930s.

What Maoist are doing by extortion will not help to garner any suuoprt from the public at large.I am sure their intellectual wing must be aware of this fact. I personally belive that it is their strategy to have remind the people that if talks were to failed, we would be hearing this sort of news on a daily basis.Sooner Maoist stop this sort of act better it will be for the sprit of talks.

If Maoist are really in need of Money just to feed their cadre then a committee should be formed with 1 each from Govn,Maoist & Civic society & work out feeding requiremnet until election to CA is over

Another thing, an army of 90,000 for our poor country is unaffordable. They are doing nothing inside the barracks and we can not lay them off either. They have nothing to do and come out of their walls and start torturing civilians especially ladies.

Why not to hand them some kodalas and gaintis (spades and hammers) and involve them in repairing thousands of wrecked building throught the country? However, supervise them closely so as not to allow them to spill over to civil residential areas.

In my opinion there should be a good proposal mentioning that these monitory fund will be utilised by Maoist for rehabilitaion of destroyed National Infrastructure and Maoist should have commitment to work on these aspects. Otherwise how can anybody contribute something which will get backfired.

For the likes of people who give the benefit of doubt for the maoists leadership:

    BEWARE BE VERY AWARE!

Making better use of history to defend ourselves

Far away, in a land that we used to think of as Shangri-La Nepal, a simmering revolution has succeeded in removing a tyrannical king from power. Since we live in an era that is called “revolutionary,” it is probably a good idea to know what happens in a more violent revolution somewhere in the world. Must we be pawns of historic forces that we cannot, or do not, understand, or can we make better use of history to protect ourselves?

I saw the Iranian Revolution of 1979 up close and personally — a revolution against a modernizing authoritarian king. I watched otherwise clever intellectuals deceive themselves that they would emerge the rulers of a democratic Iran, while the crafty theocrats waited in the wings to seize power. How could all these leftists be so naive about how revolutions work? The trajectory of revolutions should be no mystery. Crane Brinton’s “The Anatomy of Revolution” spelled it all out in 1958, and his observations have stood the test of time.

Brinton compared four major revolutions: the English Revolution of 1640 they executed their king and established a 10-year religious dictatorship, the American Revolution of 1776, the French of 1789, and the Russian of 1917. The American Revolution was the exception to the usual templates about revolutions, which is why it was less bloody and horrific than the others. But for the rest, the following elements hold true:

Revolutions in which an entire system of rule is replaced by another have happened only since the 17th century; before that, there were revolts, which were bloodily put down by the ruling class, or revolutions that replaced one dynasty with another.
Revolutions do not occur when things are at rock bottom. Famines, plagues and natural disasters contribute to unrest, but a revolution will not happen until a society perceives that progress has been thwarted by government incompetence. The danger is keenest when rising expectations are not met.
Revolutions do not come from the fringes — the far left or far right — they come from the middle. When the intelligentsia of a country loses all respect for the country’s leadership, the groundwork is laid for ending the regime.
Once the autocratic leadership is removed, the intelligentsia are the next to be removed. A dictatorial cadre, from the fringes and often few in number, takes over the country.

Economic issues start the revolution, but ideological fanaticism finishes it.
Nepal, a once remote and very poor country that has only recently opened up to the international community, has experienced rising expectations, expanded economic connections and population explosion, but suffers from traditional, inconsistent and inept government. The king had lost all public awe and respect, and could not control the mobs in the streets. He has relinquished power and the liberal revolutionaries are prematurely rejoicing.

In Nepal, rural Maoists have waged a long guerrilla war against the state. They are organized, ideological and deadly. You can be sure that the young, educated revolutionaries who are agitating to bring the Maoists into a democratic parliament will find themselves outflanked and sorry. The Maoists are organized; the liberals are not; and in a confrontation between a good fellow and a brute, the brute has the edge. The only thing that can prevent such an outcome is neighboring India, which may use military force to deal with the Maoists. India does not want Maoists on their border.

Let’s see how Brinton explains his model revolutions. The American Revolution was the exception only because we were lucky. Had we not been blessed with founding fathers who were classically educated, students of antiquity’s republics Athens and Rome, businessmen and patriotic activists, our revolution against Britain could have created an ugly, mob-ruled or authoritarian country.

The other three revolutions were not so lucky. The English Revolution of 1640 executed a king and set up a theocratic dictatorship. Ten years later, however, the king’s son was invited back, but this time constrained by a powerful parliament.

France created a republic, followed by a dictatorship of terror, which was followed by Napoleon, who became emperor. France still suffers from the results of their revolution today in depending upon all things coming from all-powerful government which hobbles their economy. French adulation of their revolution has created an environment of romanticized street revolts, several of which we have seen this past year. Not a good thing in a republic.

Russia has not yet recovered from its revolution, a textbook case of a small and ruthless group seizing power during chaos and hanging onto it even today. The young intellectuals who cheered when the Soviet Union collapsed are not cheering now. Democratic freedoms are vanishing.

The Chinese and Iranian revolutions fall perfectly into the same pattern. The real masters of the revolution took over dictatorial power, executed the intellectuals, suppressed the rabble and crippled the burgeoning economic sector. China has only begun to climb out of its half century of horrors while in Iran conditions are dire.

With almost no exception, revolutions turn out badly. Jacques Barzun, in his masterpiece “From Dawn to Decadence” 1998 sees signs that western liberal democracies are slouching toward revolution, too. They are becoming ungovernable, partisan, and scornful of their governments and without any respect for anything in their societies.

Europe is apparently in danger, and with a little push from their burgeoning Muslim population, theocracy may well replace weak, liberal democracy. Today, Europe, tomorrow the world? Read Crane Brinton and be warned.

Agreed that our army has to be restructured at least on top. But this maoists are getting out of hand. Suggestion is to immediately use only small tight knit groups of special forces (rangers) to be on immediate standby and strike when the need arises. Target should be the leadership of these thugs, even if it means going covertly into India.
