Hurray! Nepal Is A Secular Country
UWB Photo blog by Shruti Shrestha

Yes, amendments must be made in general knowledge books around the world. The world’s only Hindu Kingdom is a history now and people of Nepal, that country, are happy! Hindus are happy, Buddhists are happy, Muslims are happy, Christians are happy, people from different ethnic communities in Nepal are happy. As the parliament passed a historic resolution making Nepal a secular nation, celebrations started on the main street in front of Singha Durbar, the administrative center of Nepal, where parliament is located.
Look Who Is Smiling?

You can’t hide a smile: A Nepali woman from ethnic community smiles as she watches people celebrating in front of Singha Durbar after the parliament passed a historic resolution making Nepal a secular country.

People took out rally in front of Singha Durbar celebrating the secularism in Nepal
Making Their Voice Heard

Earlier in the day hundreds of people, many of them associated with different ethnic community, gathered in front of Singha Durbar with banners to pressurize the government to declare Nepal a secular country.

People putting flags over the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah that was vandalized a day before while protesting against the government and parliament’s slow speed in declaring the parliament a supreme organization.

Very good point Rai.
Hellow,
You must be aware of Catholic organisations going around with lists of ethnic groups to convert to Catholic religion….we have seen them on the Internet…do YOU BELONG TO THOSE?? People here asking silly questions like whether Nepal was a Hindu country for 300 years by referendum..Laughable logic..moronic understanding of the growth and development of societies..Can a Hindu become King of UK? Is that by referendum?? Foreign agents,Evangelists, Indian agents, Leftists, Maoists are having a free run of Nepal..Bush won on Catholic votes..is ready to give arms after Nepal called Non-Hindu state….Catholics are looking at Dalits as a tool ..Dalits will not remain quiet because all those who sat in India and planned all this will misguide and use them…
shanti, do you know why Catholics are targeting ethnic people and dalits? Why are they not targeting others? Think!
Basanta,
If your daughter eloped with muslim or christian what you will do ?
Shanti,
What is that crap you were throwing? As a Hindu, why do you feel so much insecurity from other religions under a secular state? They are not forcing to convert you? Why do you think we need a State protection while other religions do not. I am glad that there are not too many people like you in Nepal. With a mentality like yours, Hinduism will be suffer more.
If you are so insecured, then your faith to Hinduism is questionable. Your fear mongering is an inferiority complex or you want to hang on to special status enjoyed by certain castes in Hinduism.
ck2,
I dont think i need to give anymore explanations about why Nepal declared as secular state is a good thing. You can read any of the post here and I hope u might get satisfied at any one of them about “Secularism being Inseparable part of Democracy”.
Regarding Maoists,
Qs u have raised in (# 150), I have tried to answer them in Post: “Uncle Sam on Nepal: Latest report card”.Go and see there.
I just have one question.
why can’t Nepal be like Britain and the USA a religion-based state with secular identity?
Forget about the king, I don’t care about him.
All of you bloggers here,
I wรถnder.I wรถnder alot guys. Why are we blogging the most on issue like Secularism that is such like respecting everybody and creating harmony…Have we lost major issues that needs bloging.
And, Economy of Cows! Wow!
I would like to thank Mr.Gokarna, sweden for such a wonderful post.
& Laymans right.
We should encourage such posts as it makes bloging more interesting.
Mike,
Nepal can be a religious state with secular identity as US or UK. Main thing is to maintain the secular identity at heart of state.
But, if we really are secular in nature and pratice then its best to institutionalize secularism. And this is what happened in Nepal.
Nepal is not only maintaining its secular identity like US or UK, but also proved it by declaring itself a Secular State.
Guys, just ignore this basanta’s comment. Marginal extermists will always continue to exist. They don’t deserve attention. Left or right, these extremists are dangerous people.
The time is to redefine the national identity. Lord Bishnu governing a country is a shamefull eyewash in the third millenium. I am disgusted to read AP news, where its constantly reminded that people treat king as a god. We are not that stupid nor ignorant. But we have brainwashed by our education system that we still owe the country to Shah dynasty and to their religion.
I belong to elite upper kshetri family but I am ashamed to know the deeds of Shankarcharya who destroyed the invaluable buddhist religious texts to spread hinduism in Kathmandu. This as well is the history of Nepal. We need to know the whole history and not only the panchayat government administered history of the country.
Lets talk about cows- the economic one and not the indian version talked about in the cow article. The comment on Nepalese cow was poignant.
Nepali Corporation
You think you have two cows but in reality you donโt have any
plus
You expect the donors to give you a jersey cow.
thanks to laymen for his comment on Nepali Corporation:
You think you have two cows but in reality you donโt have any
to that i would add a phrase-
Nepali Corporation:
You think you have two cows but in reality you donโt have any but you expect the donors to give you a jersey cow.
Frankly, I don’t give a damn about secularity… However, I do care about peace in Nepal.
BASAANTA
LOOK AT THE STREETS
ARE ANYONE IN THE STREETS HAVE OPPOSED NEPAL BEING SECULAR
CANT U SEE SUCH LIVE REFERUNDUM
Minorities cheer secular state
Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, May 20 – Various organizations of minority groups and minority leaders have said that the parliament’s declaration of a secular Nepal is an important step in ensuring equality among the religiously, culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse population of Nepal.
“With the declaration, the state has moved towards ensuring social justice and harmony,” said Pasang Sherpa, General Secretary of Confederation of Indigenous and Ethnic Groups Nepal. “We welcome the declaration. A state cannot have one religion. Any state that rules on the basis of a religion is a communal state, where minorities are exploited,” he said.
The provision of a Hindu state was the underlying cause of Brahmin hegemony for the last 237 years, said Dr Krishna Bhattachan. “One state religion means the dominance of one culture, a few castes, one language, and even one gender,” said Bhattachan. “The declaration fulfills one of the main demands of indigenous and ethnic groups,” he added.
Bhattachan, however, said other major demands of the groups – the right to self-determination and ethnic, religious and regional autonomy – are yet to be fulfilled. He however noted that with secularism, the road to these had become less bumpy. “Therefore, the declaration is very welcome.”
Meanwhile, K B Gurung, Chairman of All Nepal Ethnic Convention, said that the dissent voiced by Hindu fundamentalists towards the declaration of secular Nepal is only natural. “Imposing one religion in this religiously diverse population created friction. Now, the state is on the course of addressing that friction,” he said.
Buddhist leader Bimal Nanda Mahasthavir also welcomed the declaration. He, however, noted that religious minorities had to put pressure on the parliament till the last moment to ensure the declaration of a secular state. Similarly, Salim Khan, chairman of Nepal Muslim Association, welcomed the declaration.
Muslim Ittehad Sangh, Tharu Students’ Society, Tokpegola Social Welfare Committee, Nepal Christian Society, The Council House of Tamu, National Council of Churches of Nepal, Shree Bouddha Tamang Kalyan Guthi and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church have also welcomed the declaration, issuing separate statements Friday.
Hey Tajim,
I wonder if you tell me where are your parents come from?? Pakistan? Bangladesh? Iraq? or Iran? Sorry man I’m afraid of Muslims
VSM, Don’t you feel ashamed exposing your naked racism? Where are you from you idiot?
Nepal must be Buddhist country officially. And it might not be a secular country but to Buddhist Country as the world knows that Nepal is the land of Gautam Buddha
In 2046 or 1990,before Nepal is going to declare as a Hindu country, that time the profound Buddhist monk were suspectely killed by the Government of Nepal and declared Constitutionally written a Hindy country Nepal. So all Buddhists were threatened since then-
I know all Buddhist hearts are crying…
The saddest moment for the world wide Buddhist on the name of my country’s plight now.
Well said Mr.Mike,
Good example of India as a secular country. War and War Hindu vs Muslims in India. Muslims are the major problem in India for a many century, and also all Buddhists were destroyed and thousands of Buddhist monks were killed by Muslims in India.
So that I don’t let this history happen in my beloved country Nepal again !!! Government of Nepal must protect Buddhism and must it be the National Religion too.
I know all Buddhist hearts are crying…
hey rai,
Do not try to indivisual attack. This is my comprehensive question that i asked to him. Think twice before your say. I always doubt of alien muslims in Nepal why they migrant to Nepal at the time of Government’s weak management.
Its really sad to read basanta’s comments. However most of the points raised by him are valid.
Why dont the christian organizations who are cheering this decision demand phillipines, UK, Brazil etc to be declared secular? Why dont these muslim organizations who are cheering this decision demand pakistan, saudi arabia, malaysia etc to be declared secular? If this is not double standards then what is?
Any way since the learned fool hindus like girija have taken this decision no point in blaming others. What happened… happened. There is no way to change it now.
Gokarna, Sweden
wow!!! it was your great research on Cows economics , I will take this references to my upcoming thesis, please grant me your permision!!! LOL ๐
VSM.I feel sorry for you. There are ONE BILLION MUSLIMS IN THE WORLD. Have any of them attacked you? Give me a break! do you know the largest muslim country in the world? INDIA…150 million. Muslims are fine law abiding people with families who work and carry on their lives, yes, in your backyard. some of the nicest Nepalese I know are muslim. one of my aquaintances when I lived in Nepal in the 1990’s was Muhammed Sharif, who passed away (his wife Marilou, still lives in Kathmandu). He was a well known and well respected Nepali man. SHAME ON YOU. nepal, like the usa, is a multi cultured, multi religious country, and all of those religions should be tolerated. But being a “secular” state means SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. PERIOD. Religion and politics DO NOT MIX, and never should. Period.
to Shanti, your comments about Catholicism are absurd. we humans have something called FREE WILL. We can accept or reject anything. Some people choose to follow the teachings of Buddha. I have a close formerly Hindu friend from India who is now a buddhist monk in Thailand. Christians convert to another religion, HIndus convert. If some christians want to share their faith with others, so be it! Let them! you have a choice to accept or not to accept. If you don’t like what you read on the internet, guess what? you can DELETE IT!!
But the point is SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. This is imperative. it does not mean you ignore the religious aspect of your citizens. it means that no one religion dominates in the governance of your country and, more importantly, NO ONE RELIGIOUS GROUP DOMINATES (as is the case now in nepal). in Nepal, it is also an acknowledgement that the ethnic minorites are Nepali, too. And many of them are NOT HINDU.
UWB: This Tajim isn’t the one who has been commenting on this site for quite some time. At least he is not using the same email address. Please do not use other’s name.

Why dont the christian organizations who are cheering this decision demand phillipines, UK, Brazil etc to be declared secular? Dude why should minority organizations in nepal bother about what is happening in pakistan? We want to make nepal better and we are happy with recent changes including secularism. To demand rights in pakistan is job of people who are minority there. Its not our job to interfere in others affairs.
What is problem… nepal has become much better than pakistan because of becoming secular and representative democracy. Dont you feel bad that pakistan and other countries have lost something?
VSM I just know that you originally came from India too! Go back!

Now, nepal is surrounded by fundamentalist Muslims from kashmir. the giant mosques at ghantaghar are the evidences. their number is massively incresing in nepal. Nepal is already a great BREEDING GROUND of the fundamentalist muslims. Muslims grow like bugs; they marry Nepali Hindu girls and convert them, they will have unlimited number of children and they will force people to convert.
they use all tactics and will soon destroy BUDDHISTS and Hindus. It is easy to destroy Hindus than Buddhists for them because at least Buddhists know their spirituality, Hindus in Nepal do not even know that. Most of Hindus in the villages are communists and all young generations in the citiesw are violent and spoilt by parents’ money. They laugh at their own religion and beleifs. “they have no religious kanoledge nor they have any love and faith.

Nepal will be named as Muslim Republic of Nepal within ten to twenty years.
“Pashupati should be opened for Muslims”
Good idea, so that Muslims can convert the Pashupati temple into a Muslim mosque.
All temples in kathmandu MUST BE TORN DOWN; worshipping Kumari is a Foolish idea. How can a little girl child be a goddess? Stupid! We must destroy all our conservative traditions and bring ISLAM, the earth’s only scientific religion.
No no no, we must bring Christianity. It is the religion of the rich and developed countries. What will Jesus Christ think when he comes back from heaven? the rest of the world is converted and this little poor nepal still worshipping animals and sotnes and trees and water and monkeys. Stupid!
Which one to choose??????
Nepali people must choose only one; either christianity or Islam because these two brother religions do not like each other.
If we choose Islam as our state religion, we must choose either Sunni or Shia because Sunni kills shi and Shia kills sunni through SUICIDE BOMBS”. How religious, how spiritual and how pious!
Ha, ha what a joke we Nepalis can be. 228 posts because Nepal has now become secular. Hypocrites and bigots. No better than the zealots that exist in Islam and Christianity. Shame!

Roots of Hindu relegion is so deep rooted in nepalese society nothing can uproot it. Someone said nepal will be muslim country in 10-15 years. Thats just a dream and flavored with intention of creating conflict between different relegions. Let’s don’t get worried. Declaration of seculer nation is only to spread notion of equality amongst all relegions not to eliminate hinduism. Let’s widen our thoughts, be prepared to fight against those who try to create unnecessary conflicts.
Death of a nation
The magnitude of the tragedy currently engulfing Nepal has not only been missed by people here, but worse, a section of our opinion-making classes seems to be exulting in it. Arguably, the establishment of parliamentary democracy as we understand it, in a neighbouring country cannot be a cause of melancholia.
To that extent it is natural that many will welcome the passage of a unanimous resolution by the Nepalese Parliament stripping the King of all his powers and transferring them to the elected representatives of the people. As a votary of democracy, its biggest practitioner and an avid champion of the proposed Democracy Fund under the aegis of the UN to promote this form of Government everywhere in the world, India should, logically, welcome last week’s developments in Kathmandu.
But deeper reflection would suggest that what has happened in Nepal is not a matter that lends itself to exultation. It is only a temporary, stop-gap arrangement that presages the violent overthrow of the political establishment by hardened Maoist guerrillas who have publicly vowed to assist their Indian counterparts to pursue a similar objective here.
Democracy in Nepal is no more than a mere punctuation mark in the country’s steady degeneration into Communist tyranny. Even as Nepalese politicians, led by periodic Prime Minister GP Koirala were patting themselves on the back for conducting a parliamentary coup, mobs of the streets were patently unimpressed. Several mob leaders told TV channels that it was not the job of the MPs to work out a post-monarchial arrangement.
They asserted that mob power had put these politicians back in office and the only thing Parliament was supposed to do was call for a general election. Following fresh polls, the new Parliament, mobs argued, would get transformed into a Constituent Assembly, which, in turn, would draw up a Republican Constitution. The mobocrats further contended that the present Parliament, which was revived by the King only last month under Indian pressure, was unrepresentative and owed its existence to royal munificence. The mobs said they had little faith in such a Parliament and the sooner it was dissolved the better it would be.
Nepalese politicians who never had a popular base worth the name, appear to have deluded themselves into believing they are national heroes. Mistaking the Maoist-sponsored crowds on Kathmandu’s streets last month as a sign of genuine of genuine mass support, the politicians now seem to believe that the Maoists can be outwitted. That explains the current spell of competitive radicalism. The Maoists, meanwhile, are grinning from ear to ear. Although their insurgency was originally directed not at the King but the political parties, the guerrillas changed track when they became confident that the politicians were a mere pushover while the monarch, with the Royal Nepal Army under his direct command, was a powerful military opponent.
Following the old Bolshevik dictum “Better Kerensky than the Czar”, the Maoists threw their weight behind Nepal politicians knowing that the greedy, fractious and indecisive parliamentarians could be discarded easily at a time of the insurgents’ choosing. The doctrinaire, JNU-educated Nepalese Maoists, however, are probably not wrong in casting Koirala in the role of a modern-day Kerensky, the hapless if well-intentioned Russian Prime Minister remembered by history only as the facilitator of Lenin’s triumph in 1917.
Understandably, therefore, the Maoists have lukewarmly welcomed last Thursday’s parliamentary proclamation. With the politicians desperately trying to out-radical the insurgents in emaciating the monarchy, the Maoists have their task cut out. It is a matter of time, probably just about a year, before the victorious Nepalese Red Army marches into Kathmandu, puts the King to flight, disarms the Royal Nepal Army, and packs off discredited politicians into the Nepalese equivalent of Gulag. Then they would be free to set up a Pol Pot-style Communist tyranny in which public executions would be the order of the day as “class enemies” are butchered by the thousands.
The impending Maoist regime in Nepal will also become the active fountainhead of insurgency in India, besides providing sanctuary to Red terrorists from this country from time to time.
If Nepalese politicians have deluded themselves into thinking they are genuinely popular, the Indian establishment is busy hallucinating that it continues to pull the strings from behind the scene. Officially, India says it favours a Constitutional Monarchy in Nepal, that the King should remain one of the three pillars of society – others being the Parliament and civil society. Even as it facilitated the deal between the politicians and Maoists, hammered out at various safe houses in Noida and other outskirts of Delhi, India claimed its larger objective was to prevent a Maoist takeover in Kathmandu. But now that the politicians are speaking the Maoists’ language, New Delhi is quite powerless to influence events across the soft border. This is not to suggest that King Gyanendra is an innocent victim of wily politicians and hardened mass murderers masquerading as Maoists. His own megalomania and the absence of sophistication in his drive towards absolute monarchy undoubtedly accelerated his own downfall. He was no Czar Nicholas II, but at present his position is probably more pathetic than that of Russia’s last Emperor. Unless he evacuates the Narayanhiti Palace in the foreseeable future, King Gyanendra runs the risk of his residence being overrun by Maoist mobs baying for his blood while spineless politicians apprehensively applaud the rise of “people power”. In just three months, Nepal has broken with its centuries-old traditions and stable social order. In a sickening attempt to earn brownie points from Maoists, the politicians have scrapped even the Hindu Kingdom appellation that Nepal hitherto proudly bore. Actually, there was no popular demand to shed this tag. But Nepalese politicians, crawling when asked only to bend, decided to play midwife to the country’s transition to an anachronistic form of communism. If the parliamentary proclamation gets implemented, the King will no longer be regarded as the avatar of Vishnu, a status he has enjoyed since time immemorial.
Nor will the Royal Nepal Army owe allegiance to the monarchy. The disbanded soldiers would probably be massacred, while a few may get absorbed into the Maoist killing machine. Sadly, this will be welcomed by India’s chattering classes as a triumph of democracy and secularism. It is not realised that personalities can be replaced but institutions once demolished cannot be rebuilt. The too-clever-by-half policy towards Nepal has ended in India’s humiliation and irrelevance.
input the pioneer
Even the cultural bonding that decreed that priests of Pashupati Nath Temple necessarily be Namboodiri Brahmins from Kerala will probably get scrapped soon ending the communion between the only two Hindu peoples of the world. Who knows, the Maoists may even ban Hinduism altogether in Nepal. Our secularists will probably applaud that too.
Why evryone seems happy about HOR procliammation?
I am a patriotic Nepali. I donโt have any interest in politics or whatever. I am a quite NEPALI what they call me in my MBA class in MCNY, NYC. But I am force to be aggressive due to the recent proclamation of HOR that Nepal will be declared as a secular nation, but not only Hindu Kingdom in world.
We donโt have a history of 100 or 200 years, for more than five millennium we are Hindu and we will be Hindu as long as Nepal lives. We should not let anyone play their dirty games with our holy country. They can do whatever with king and other system just donโt interfere with our religion.
If you are a Nepali and Hindu/Buddhist please donโt keep quite let us all be united and protest against the movement. Nepal should remain a HINDU NATION FORVER.
I wrote this email but my fren gave me than name of self procliamed saviour of Hindu.
I respect all the religion, but, that doesn’t mean that I sould give up my proirites. There are lots of Indian in Nepal so we can eaisly be part of India, Never……..
Amit
At least, you should change your headline because the majority of Nepali people are not celebrating for secularism. Rather, they are debating.
nirmal
“I am a nepali first then a Muslim”
Tajim
I am so proud of you. Yes we should keep this feeling for ever. Lets make this country an example of religious tolarance.
I am also a Nepali first then a Hindu.
C’mon you guys why are you mourning Nepal becoming a secular state as if it is the death knell of the great religion? Surely Hinduism does not need to be backed by the state to surivive and flourish?
Secularism is very compatible to democracy and in some cases like our country where Brahmins, Chettris and Thakuris have dominated state power perhaps even essential.
When the sate religion was Hinduism you expected Nepalis of other religions to accept it and we did. Now that Nepal is secular you suddenly seem to have a problem. That sounds like double standards to me.
In Nepal now all religions are equal. You have a problem with equality? Come on!
@Kirat.
When the sate religion was Hinduism you expected Nepalis of other religions to accept it and we did. Now that Nepal is secular you suddenly seem to have a problem. That sounds like double standards to me.
There are many countries in world who are called christian country but are secular in nature. Let nepal be called hindu nation. Nepal was is and will be secular in nature. Since nepal has its history, culture and many things associated with hinduism and since hindus form majority of nepalese and since it is only one hindu country in whole world… it is highly inappropriate to change such thing just like a joke… without any discussion.
I guess you are not a hindu by religion. Lets assume you follow kirat religion as per your DP. Now whether nepal is called ‘secular’ country or ‘hindu’ country why should it matter to you? Both are equivalent for you… both are not your religions name. But to a hindu like me it matters. Hope you try to understand it.
Hinduism is worlds third largest religion. Ramayan is related to nepal… its birth place of sita. Mahabharat has many events that took place in modern day nepal. I dont remember exactly but either balmiki or ved vyasha was born in nepal. It is completely wrong to say that hinduism is foriegn religion to nepal… hinduism and buddhism have their roots in nepal.
If buddhists feel left out… lets name nepal hindu-buddhist country. Gautama Buddha is as dear to hindus as he is to buddhists. But naming the worlds only hindu country with continuous shared history with hinduism as secular wont be acceptable to any proud hindu.
All events have bigger events their wombs. Declaring Nepal a secular country carries very deep meanings and will invite repercussions that will be unbearable for both nations, Nepal as well as India.
Now, their will be new ‘secular’ guests entering Nepal via porous borders of India (with Nepal and Bangladesh), setting up ‘secular’ institutions where ‘secular’ population will be trained to further ‘secularise’ Nepal and India. Secular support from Communist Parties of India will be readily available. ‘Fast-breeders’ will be very soon dreaming of having a competition with ‘secular’ population numbers in India to make Nepal ‘as secular’ as Pakistan.
This may sound far-fethched today, but so was the creation of Pakistan and an Islamic Bangladesh to most of us 60 years back. One can for example look at ‘secular pockets’ in every city of India that have more in common with ‘secular Pakistan’ than with India.
Basanta, Well they shot Gandhi, perhaps you should have a go at Girija and Prachanda. You and some other posters here seem to be that type of a person.
If you want to talk about history and culture you will find Nepal’s recorded history starts with Kirats. Kirats ruled this region for a thousand years. Go check the facts.

I have been living in USA for the last twenty years. I have always hated the criminals of the palace-the shah families. NEPAL SHOULD BE A FULL REPUBLIC; THE KING SHOULD BE MADE A NORMAL NEPALI CITIZEN AND THEN HUNG.
There is one thing which strikes me the most; what made the parliament declare Nepal as a secular country???????
People are celebrating the VICTORY and I am most happy too but I am shocked to see how little Nepali people know about today’s global geo-political structure.
“Nepal has been freed from one demon but it is caught in the hands of a greater danger.”
I do not like BJP and I have nothing to do with Indian politics. But declaring Nepal as a secular country is a CULTURAL SUICIDE. Nepal has invited its trouble, the same problem that India and Pakistan are going through.
At this time Nepal is totally surrounded by Muslim fundamentalists. They will make Nepal a graveyard in 10-15 years if Nepali people do not submit to them and convert into Muslim religion. they have spread all over the world with the same slogan. This declaration of secularism is going to benefit ONLY TO THEM and is going to destory our heritage. The most harm will be done to the indiginous ethnic cultures. Muslims and christians only GOAL IS TO CONVERT AND SPREAD and nepalโs peopleโs ignorance is a great benefit to them.
“Our leaders have deceived us.”
Now, MMuslims will destroy Nepalโs culture as they have done to all lands over the centuries.
SECULARISM PROMOTES ONLY THE MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIAN MISSINARIES. They have already planted their roots at the heart of Kathmandu and now are expanding their oil money to convert people.

Sudeep,
Do you have 70 crore rupees? We can have a protest going for this secularism business if you have the money. Infact, we can have Janandolan 3.
By declaring itself aSecular Nation, Nepal has lost its identity, its point of difference with India. Now, it isjust like any other province of India that has a language, a local police and a flag to call its own. Nepal was differentas it was a Hindu Nation, reverred here in India by millions as the single Hindu bastion that never succumbed to ‘conversion’ or to Moslem sword.
Your stand to losse this respect now.
The picture Roshan (#231)paints with historical precedent, Indian’s ad-hoc policy and internally fractured political party is very apt, excatly what is happening in Nepal. I just pray his conclusion that the Maoist will take over is never realized.

i am in favour of secularism as most of nepalese
Sudeep,
That’s right, I forgot you don’t need to because you are in favour of the secular announcement, but then you do agree that the lack of protests does not necessarily reflect peoples views, and an andolan can be garnered through money also. It took 14 months for the SPA and maoists to get together 70 crores and the people needed for their janandolan 2, so maybe you speak too soon with regards to “protests” for this secularism business as well. When the effects of this declaration starts to show just like the effects of the Feb. 1 takeover by KG, believe me you will get your protests. Till then.
Good for Nepali people to go for secularism. You have many brothers and sisters in middle east who are guests of muslim nations and it is good for relation now.
Allah o Akbar!
I strongly support the views expressed by Basanta,Kushal and Ashutosh etc.We 90% of the hindu people cant be deceived for the happiness of 10% people by the odecision made by Girija alone.let this point also be included in the constituent assembly poll. Then the democratic people will decide the fate. After all we all are living in a democratic country.
sri i dont think so
jana aandolan II was to restore our lost rights
for the power back to people
we have already got religious freedom
Only radicals protest for Nepal being secular
A religion can be of personal interest not of nations’
those who protest secularism areeither they dont know the meaning of it or they dont respect humanity, equality and fraternity
those are intolerant and radicals
its beginning
we need secularism in caste, regions and communities
its first step towards what is now called “samaweshi prajantra”
Just by announcing secular does not make a nation secular. Nepal has always welcomed the practice of all religions. If the people want to be secular, they should change from within their personal selves. Announcing such things just invites arguments and dissent.
It’s like these old leaders claiming that they are democratic, but they do not practice this themselves within their parties. Being a Hindu state and being secular in practice is like being the head of a household who is respected and followed but is also benevelont. But being a secular state and not practicing it is like the moaists who have to preach equality with the threat of the gun at all times.
Never forget that ‘Demography decides the Destiny of nations’. How many nations in middle east are Secular ? Why, the Vatican is not a secular state? Why does the flag of Great Britain depict St Andrew’s Cross and St George’s Cross?
Remember: NATIONS WHO FORGET THEIR HISTORY STAND TO PAY FOR IT BY LOSSING THEIR GEOGRAPHY.
-India is a live example.
