The banner reads: Shahi ghosana dhoka ho [Royal proclamation is a Betrayal].
Maoist student organization is organizing a mass meeting in the heart of Kathmandu as we are writing these lines. Rallies from different parts of the city have reached Khula Manch, the mass meeting venue. Pics by Wagle
Shahid ko ragat ke bhanchha
Ganatantra le bhanchha
[Blood of the martyrs demands republicanism in Nepal]
That was the most chanted slogan in a rally that went from Tinkune half an hour ago. The destination of the rally? Khula Manch (open air theater) of course where a pro-Maoist student organization is holding a mass meeting. I saw a Nepali Congress flag in the rally in which participants were shouting slogans like Nisart sambidhan sabha ghosana gar [Declare unconditional Constituent Assembly], Shahi sena kharej gar, rastriya sena ghosana gar [Scrap the royal army, announce the national army]. My personal guess is that the char tare (four star) flag carrier was not a Nepali Congress activist. The rally was different form that of the previous one- organized by the Seven Party Alliance. And that is obvious because today’s rally is organized by All Nepal National Free Student Union Revolutionary (ANNFSU-R).

The placard reads: Announce all party government, announce unconditional constituent assembly.
Journalists and observers are talking about how Maoists manage to get into the recent spectacular protest programs that forced King Gyanendra to restore the Parliament that he dissolved in suspicious circumstances. “In many places,” an editor with in depth knowledge about the insurgency told me. “I saw Maoist cadres managing the crowd and organizing rallies.” Then the editor talked about an incident in Ghattekulo where pro-Maoists activists organized an ‘all party’ corner meeting where their own cadres represented the other political parties!

Messenger of Comrade Prachanda: A few people like this man were distributing pamphlets with appeals from Maoist chairman Prachanda and leader Baburam Bhattarai.
All other flags in the rally were Sickly and Hammer communist ones. A few determined activists in the rally were distributing pamphlets that have two appeals on two sides direct from the Maoist party. At the end of one side is jointly signed by Maoist chairman Prachanda and Baburam Bhattarai. On the other side is signed by Prachanda alone. The title of the appeal reads: “Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)/ Central Committee/Appeal.” Date for the joint signature appeal is 12 Baishak 2063 (25 April) where as the other is dated 26 April. One banner in the rally read: Shahi ghosana dhoka ho [Royal proclamation is a Betrayal].

Char Tare in the ANNFSU-R rally?

Reading the message from the comrade.

The Maoists should not get away scott free for the murders they have committed. They have slitted heads of thousands of innocent Nepalis in the name of “sukaki ko safaya”.
They have also shot dead politicians for merely being of old regime (purano satta). Just remember that ..there are small children without their fathers becasue of these murderers.
These are the ones who severed the neck of Gyanendra Karki (the journalist) in front of his wife and children. They also poked eyes out of one politicians, who asked to see his family as his dying wish before he was put to death by these murderers.
I Quote ” I saw Maoist cadres managing the crowd and organizing rallies.” Then the editor talked about an incident in Ghattekulo where pro-Maoists activists organized an ‘all party’ corner meeting where their own cadres represented the other political parties! ”
Not only “an editor with in depth knowledge about the insurgency” but even a lay man knew that all things going on since april 6th was maoist plan which was carried forwarded by the SPA. Dinesh Ji, go and look into the video archives of andolan, you will see some people carrying branches you know why? no not because there was scarcity of party flag but it was the MAOIST whom they wanted to distinct themselfs from the SPA flags, so how to do that, carry green braches, which represents, “from jungle”, you you had closely monitored the videos from all around nepal and especially from different places of ktm and the also monitor the dates in which they carried most branches, it was not during 6th to 9th april but it was after that and especially after april 21st when KG made first address to the nation.
I have nothing to say now about this but The history will tell that how wrong it was to form an alliance with MAOIST and carry their slogan.
It the parties who have deviated from their place and now reached to the maoist control, no matter who ever sidelined them, you may want to ask why they were sidelined, because they do not have strong will power, they just want the power.
I wonder how parties who do not beleive in king, blindly beleives in Maoist, the same maoist who had killed ten of thousands of innocent nepalese people and their political parties activist.
Maoist are Iceberg, what we see is not what they are.
Just put this comment in one corner and one day this will come to haunt you!
Even only Maoists good put forth their agendas in this manner all the time! Wouldn’t it be great?
typo read If instead of Even!
by the read this news guys
what a f– indian [icd]!!!
This is why we hate indians!!!
only if they put thier demands this way….
but them are maoists… so it will be in good for the adminstration to have a good look at their faces cause it is a certainity them maoist will not leave their arms…today or later they will return back to thier terrorist tactics….
the only way to solve the maoi problem is to either lure all the mao foot soilders to the democratic system or kill em’ all. prachanda and babauram and all the central memebers…no deal with them…kill those ba@3ds.
Maoists are well determined in their agenda. Unlike SPA leaders they will meet their goals anyway.
down with arms and violence, then only will i see the credibility. otherwise, off you go to the mountain holes where you belong.
Hello,
RKA : did you ever think that the “mountain holes” are part of your country ?
Maiost : what are the maoist’s goals ?
Cpy,
It’s a little late to ask, “what are the maoist’ goal”… People’s Democracy is the simple answer..
now ask, what does “people’s” & “democracy” mean..
and I will ask you to go to Yahoo or Google.. look up CPN(M) or “People’s War” and you can start to answer your question..
A hot but wnnderful in Nepal’s new reality.
Michael,
Well, I read all that…
But I asked Maiost, not you. Just wanted to have his explanations.
By the way, don’t you think there is a real gap between cities and valleys in Nepal ?
Maoist’s goal is complete loktantra-republism
Thanks, Maiost,
Another question : does Loktantra mean to you a political system inclusive of all political parties, or one that would exclude multipartism ?
cpy,
Yes there is a “gap”, 97% of the country lies in poverty and explotation so, SOME, in Kathmandu and other cities can have wealth.. Today that will take the long march to change..
That does not mean that everyone will be “equal”, but it does mean everyone will have a more equal-chance, and that a Tolet-Cleaners son or daughter can be PM.
It is also that King Gyanendra and CP-Pares will no longer be able to steal from the people of Nepal. Maybe the CP can be a rickshaw driver ?
Michael,
My question was indeed a kind of provocation, as I travelled extensively in the remotest places of Nepal in the 80’s (where tourists never go).
In Mangalsen, even civil servants were starving.
Not even talking about Rukum ou Dailekh…
No water, no wood, no food, no government except for tax collectors…
I can tell that “democraty” will not be achieved in Nepal as long as those regions will not be developped.
The fight for democracy has just begun. We witnessed the presence of a CPIM leader in the parliament of Nepal, a pro maoist faction of India, and most applauded his presence, what a bad way to begin a democratic rule.
Heads up all freedom lovers, the fight is now beginning and I am ready come hell or high water.
I call upon all freedom fighters and young leaders and lovers of democracy to come together. These old MP’s are’nt going to do it, they could not even get the first session in parliament right (it was convened 4 hours after it was supposed to be!!!) and the speaker even misplaced two of her pages. How can we expect them to govern the country or first fight for democracy against the maoists???
Youths and freedom lovers brace yourself and prepare yourself for the fight of our lives. Let us make our future generations proud of our generation where the past generations have failed. This fight is about freedom, new age thinking, progression and new ideas – the SPA as they stand don’t have vision, the King is a dead donkey and monarchy has gone past it’s sell by date, the maoists are outdated facists but they have the guns and we have to be ready, and let foreigners not dictate to us as they have been with the older generation. A free Nepal for free Nepalis.
Jai Jai Jai Nepal! Jai Jai Jai prajatantra! Jai Jai Jai Nepali yuvaharu!
Chankhe2,
I had read one of your comments a few blogs back and it makes a lot of sense, and we hear you loud and clear.
Jai Nepal!
Jai Nepal!
Cyp,
I know your question about whether the Maoists support a multiparty system was directed at Maoist, but still I think anyone can answer it.
The Maoists have made very clear over the course of the last few years, and with stronger emphasis over time, both in the 12 point agreement, and in their recent set of interviews with the BBC, Indian media, etc, that they absolutely support a multiparty system. To the best of my knowledge they have never said they wanted a one-party state. They have said over and over again that they want a multiparty system. There is absolutely no doubt about this.
But for some reason some people do not take them at their word on this. Let me ask you: If they have been lying all this time, and working toward a one-party state, how could you explain their current actions? They have committed to a constituent assembly, to integrating the PLA and RNA which would amount to an end to the war, they have committed to operating as a legal political party, first in the constituent assembly, and then under the constitution drafted by that assembly.
They know very well that their support lies mainly in rural areas, and that if urban dwellers are to accept them as a legitimate political force, then they must keep their promises. They are not stupid enough to think they could just break all their commitments and create a one party state without the support of people in urban areas. But they have everything to gain from a multiparty system under a new constitution because of the support they have in rural areas. So take them at their word–they are not suicidal.
Talking about Indians and their influence, check this out, and if you don’t believe it you are welcome to verify it:
OF THE 545 MEMBERS OF THE LOWER HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT OF INDIA (THE LOK SABHA)
29 HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF SPOUSAL ABUSE. 7 HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR FRAUD. 19 HAVE MORE THAN THREE CRIMINAL CASES PENDING AGAINST THEM . 117 HAVE BEEN CHARGED AND ARE BEING INVESTIGATED FOR MURDER, RAPE, ASSAULT, EXTORTION AND ROBBERY. 71 CANNOT GET CREDIT OR LOANS DUE TO POOR CREDIT HISTORIES. 21 ARE
CURRENT DEFENDANTS ON VARIOUS LAWSUITS. 84 HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN OFFENCES AND HAVE PAID FINES. PASS THIS AROUND. THE MORE PEOPLE WHO KNOW THIS, THE BETTER.
Thank you M for your reply,
It’s good to talk about that, because in western countries people tend to assimilate nepali maoists with those in Pol Pot time…
For people without knowledge of the nepali situation, maoism means hell…
m,
If they think they have the support even in the rural areas which I doubt, then they should lay down their arms now and go for elections. You know and all of us know the maoists want a one party republic, one way or the other. You have tricked the foolish Gyane and now the SPA. One way or the other by the use of guns, money, temptations,Indian support, any way which you can, your leader Prachanda is hell bent on getting to his ultimate goal of being the sole dictator. He is just like a whore, and will do anything to get to his goal.
Who is foolish enough to believe that Prachanda the illiterate gunda and Baburam the literate gunda will settle down from such power into a life of back benching in parliament at most. That is – if they win seats, which is very very difficult for them if the maoists lay down their arms.
You want the people to trust you LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS UNCONDITIONALLY.
The rest of us be ready.
The rest of your propoganda is just that.
Indian Leaders are here because they have certain needs from Nepal like water, electricity. And Nepalese leaders welcome them because they do not have balls to do anything on their own. As always, once a bahadur, always a bahadur…So as in the case of 1990, again we needed Indians to achieve ultimate revolution…Another revolution will have the same story
integration of maoist fighter into rna is bad idea. we people dont need more gyanes in our country who get paid like hell to just carry a gun. i think we should start discussing about that to in this blog
AS LONG AS MAOBADI HAVE ARMS NO ONE CAN VOTE FOR ANY PARTY OTHER THAN MAOBADI IN THE RURAL AREAS……check this out from other countries..NAXAL affected areas of India…areas under LTTE in SriLanka….
Cyp,
I am not sure where the association with the Khmer Rouge comes from. It is a strange comparison in my view for a few reasons. One is that the Khmer Rouge never claimed to be Maoists, and their insane policies were not even remotely Marxist in nature–what happened under the Khmer Rouge, while it was carried out at the beginning with a thin veneer of Communism, was actually something which had very little link at all with what has happened in other countries. It was (luckily) a unique situation.
Another reason is that if you want to worry about Maoism, there is enough to be critical about in what happened in Mao’s China. The failure of the Great Leap Forward, the excesses of the Cultural Revolution, and so on. Both good and bad things happened under Mao. But if you want to worry about Maoists, why not just make a direct comparison to Mao’s China?
Granted, there have been some who have called themselves Maoists who have not been a force for good. I am thinking specifically of the Peruvian Sendero Luminoso. But I don’t think there is evidence that the Nepali Maoists have gone down the same path–yes, there have been abuses by Nepali Maoists, killing of people who shouldn’t have been killed, etc. But unlike Sendero Luminoso, the Nepali Maoists have tried to stop this (where SL encouraged it), and they have not done it on a mass scale (where SL did).
It is important I think to look at the Nepali Maoists as a particular phenomenon of Nepal, and to take them at their word for what they believe in. If you read what they have written, particularly Dr Baburam Bhattarai (who has a PhD and would therefore have been killed under Pol Pot), they are in favour of development, industrialisation, and multiparty democracy. Of course they could just be making it all up, but I see no reason to believe that.
i also read such pamplets.
lal salam comrades!
What would be interesting, M, would be to have more accurate accounts of how the nepali maoists manage the zones under their control.
There are quite a few of those accounts on Internet, but most of them are negative, pointing forced labour, enrolment, total lack of freedom and so on…
It’s difficult for me, 9000 kilometers away from Nepal, to figure out…
Cyp,
That is a real difficulty. There are some reports that are gleaming and uncritical, and some reports that are completely condemning. I have heard first hand reports from Nepali people, and the ones I have spoken to who have been in those areas themselves generally have good things to say, while the ones I have spoken to who have not been to those areas but have heard stories often have bad things to say. I suspect the truth is not simple. Even if you are in Kathmandu and not 9000 kilometers away I think it is difficult to assess what is happening in Rolpa.
How big was the maoists crowd on Friday?
Kantipur photo journalist Todd guessed that the mass today was half of what he saw yesterday in the SPA mass meeting.
Okay, here is the photo of the meeting by Shaligram Tiwari:

Interesting photo. eKantipur reports it as a crowd of ‘hundreds’–that photo clearly shows more than a few hundred. And the BBC reported 2000–I have seen demonstrations of 2000 people and that photo looks like a lot more than 2000. The reporting of this event seems to be a bit biased.
yes indeed! the area is almost full …..I don’t think figures provided by BBC or Ekantipur agree with the picture.
Thank you m for comment april 28th 2006 at 6.31 pm, and so on. I try to follow your discussions from here in Norway. Nepal is in the focus of global attention now. What is happening is an inspiration to people all over the planet. So, of course, there is also now a global wave of anticomminism. What does maobadi want? I will put it like this: COMMUNISM IS HISTORY´S WORD FOR LOVE. No more, no less. And accordingly, what CPN(M) want is to serve the people. They live for you, they will die for you. Khmer Rouge – I will not take that discussion here, now. But, they were never evil people! Sendero Luminoso, on the other hand, they were never maoists, and therefore, they do not exist no more. My maoistparty in Norway AKP (website http://www.akp.no), we are of course also discussing the situation in Nepal. We trust the good intentions of CPN(M) to the fullest. The only thing we are a little bit unsure about is this slogan “prachanda path”. As we understand, this words was what caused controversy between Prachanda and Bamburam. Mao never thought single persons made history. On the contrary, Mao said: THE PEOPLE ARE THE REAL HEROES! Anyway, next monday is may 1st! We salute you all, and monday, in demonstrations all over this country, supporting Nepal will be one of the main slogans. Lal salaam!
Ola Bog
It does not matter how many people were there in the Khulla Munch… there could be many with different views there to listen what the Maoist has to say.
According to Kantipur online news president of Maoists’ student wing—All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R), Lekh Nath Neupane said “The parties will have a chance to correct their mistakes committed in the past if they go for unconditional constituent assembly elections.” in his Khulla Munch speech.
Mr. Lekh nath Neupane the so called maoist leaders why does the SPA only realize from their past mistakes?? What have you realized after killing thousands of innocent people???
If you have courage then lay down the arms and renounce the violence before we can go for the free and fair CA election. Let the people decide who they want the country to be ruled by.
the SPA says that they will take action against all those who have wronged the people of nepal and have misused their power.
their concern is appreciated but what about the maoists!
have they not committed any crimes ?what about the executions that they have carried out?what about the number of ladies they have widowed?what about the children they have orphaned?have we as a nation forgotten and forgiven all that!the party which was supposed to be working for the poor and the downtrodden is the one which has done them most harm!
we are all busy immortalising the 16 who died during this movement, and they deserve it.
but what about the 14000 who died at the hands of the maoists?we want to punish those who were responsible for these 16 deaths when the leaders of our country are busy dancing to the tunes of murderers of 14000 of our countrymen.can there be anything more shocking and shameful than that!
no body seems to care about them.no body talks of immortalising them .no body talks of rehabilitating their families.its asif those killed by the maoists have been branded as offenders by the whole country.or are we so scared of the gun!!!!!
these maoists are bloody murderers and we have let them out on the streets.our leaders do not have the guts to stand up against them so much so that it is difficult to distinguish them by their words.can you even think of one leader at the moment who can face them let alone oppose them!!!
the spa hid behind the maoists and acheived this but the maoists have now down an about turn and now there is nowhere to hide!
the maoists will get them.the spa is all but a sitting duck.do they really think that they will be able to rule independently.
nature has its laws and its best we dont disturb that.junglees of the jungle are best left in the jungle.if they are really serious about joining the mainstream then even they should allow an inquiry commission to investigate the wrong doing of their cadres.
the country has been gifted to the maoists on a platter by the SPA but they will receive no return gift!!!!
best of luck girija(he really needs it)
best of luck sher bahadur(you can roar but will never again bite)
best of luck madhav (commnists will rule this country but you will not)
last but not the least BEST OF LUCK NEPAL! with spineless leaders like this you need it the most
rabin,
According to nepalnews.com, Leknath Neupane also said in his speech that the Maoists are ready to lay down arms if the constituent assembly goes ahead. This is nothing new. They have been saying this since the 12 point agreement. There has never been a question of the constituent assembly going on with armed groups in the country. The whole point is that both the RNA and the PLA will have their weapons and soldiers placed under supervision by a neutral third party. There is no intention to maintain an armed PLA, but the Maoists are not going to lay down arms until they are certain that the process is going to go ahead. So if you want the Maoists to disarm sooner, then press the SPA to make sure the constituent assembly happens.
the maoists are not a power to reckon with sans their weapons and nobody realizes this fact better than they themselves.i for one have a gut feeling that the maoists are never going to give up their weapons.(would loved to be proved wrong though)
after all it is the power of the bullet which has kept the spa leaders quiet.they shout their lungs out on punishing those responsible for the death of the people in the peoples movement, army included, and on the other hand contemplate merging the PLA which is responsible for 14000 deaths with the nepalese army.
now that does sound like a match made in heaven doesn’t it.
lastly a note to the leaders: get real guys.get your priorities right.don’t piggy back ride yourself to power on the maoists!
the consequences could be dire , for you surely for the country ……MAYBE.

Thanks for posting the article. I have read so many such articles in the Indian newspapaers.
But the fact is that our wise King did not listen to the voice of Nepalese people. He did not read the writing on the walls. But when an Indian came, he agreed with him. Do you think that tha king is anti- Indian ? What a coward ?
I am totally for the fair and free CA election. Each and every Nepali who wants to vote should be able to cast their vote without any threats. Whatever the results be we all should respect the result… once this is all said and done for the sake of peace and prosperous of nation no more bloodshed from either side… constructive opposition is always welcome but, let us stop the unconstructive politics for your own petty interest.
i cant understand how the gov. allowed the terrorists to hold such mass rallies in the heart of the capital…and i wonder what the army would have been doing at that time…they should have killed them…they r terrorists till now…and i dont think any country allows terrorists to hold such mass rallies….its like US allowing Osama to hold rally in newyork…lol…such bladdy murderers should be killed…they should not be allowed to hold such rallies at all…
we should not let maiost come to the power.they are murdeer and theykill inocent people. we hve to finished maiost from nepal.
hi
these m’s could should would not be trusted. em
Hello “human”!
Who put CPN(M) on “The Terror List”? The terrorists did that! I.e. naziBush and his gangsterelite striving for “pax americana” – The 4th Reich.
Which side are you on?
Soon they may atombomb Iran, for more oil, these global thieves. Will you be happy then?
ola, i think it was also the Girija government who put them in the terrorist list, not to forget the double faced Indian govt.
Of course, the SPA has forgotten that 14000 were dead because of Maoists…after all, they are the SPA’s brothers-in-arms…now they have reached power, all the blood spilled does not matter.
Read message # 1 and you will find out what Maoists are.
I did not like Indian intervention. Nepalese should decide for themselves. Solution must come from withn Nepal. I never liked the visits of Karan Singh and Yuchury. Now they are saying it is them who settled the problem of Nepal. They want to undermine the struggles and sacrifices Nepalese people have made to bring this revolution to a successful conclusion. They want to take all the credit for themselves partly because of our stupid King. He did not listen to the voices of Nepalese people.
ola,
You said about communists, including Sendero Luminoso, Kheme Rouge and Nepal’s Maoists that they were never evil !!! Oh what a statement.
Do not try to make all of us fool on the basis of your communist ideology. What henius atrocities they have committed to the people in the villages of Nepal.I think there must be a record of all crimes in our history books. Do not try to over simplfy the matter.
It was unfortunate that we had a stupid King who always neglected the call for dialogue among the constituional forces and instead tried to oppress the political parties for a long time. He neglected this call from all corners of the world and internally in Nepal. He also wanted to perpetualize his rule by exccessive force. That is why parties were compelled to talk with Maoists.
Now parties should be aware of the danger of Maoists taking full advantage of this situation. They should take every step carefully in order to save the country and people from these criminals.
It is better for everyone if Maoist rest their guns and proceed to the main stream. They must have learnt the lesson that people are the lover of the peaceful agitation.
