State has again turned ruthless. They even took away the bodies of dead protesters from Model Hospital, Bagbazaar. As I write this, half an hour black out is being successfully observed. The authorities have extended the curfew from 8 pm to 3 am. From 3 am there is two hour break.And, again it will be resumed. But, nothing has deterred the people so far. The agitaton has reached every nook and cranny of the country. There are reports of tremendous protests across the country.

As I write this, around one hundred youths are chanting anti-king slogans here. One young lady asked me to join the protest even after seeing my journo card. A while ago, I saw people preparing pulthas for black out-cum-torch rally which is slated for 8:30 pm today. This shows the zeal and enthusiasm of people. They have defied curfew and come to the streets in almost all corners of Kathmandu. These young people are dreaming of new Nepal. And, any compromise that doesn’t satisfy their demands will be redundant.
According to reporter Rajaram, three protesters are killed in Kalanki today. This is the first time protesters of ongoing movement have been killed in Kathmandu Valley.
Koteshor, 2:30PM
According to Kantipur reporter Balaram Baniya, around 30 thousand protesters defied curfew in Koteshor. They marched from Madhav Nepal’s house to Koteshor Chowk. They are chanting slogans. In Koteshor, people of all walks of life have participated in the peaceful rally. They already broke three police barriers and are now staging sit-in protest. In Satdobato, two prosteters are seriously injured while other 66 are among the injured. Kantipur reporter Ujir Magar is also injured.
Shantinagar Gate, 2:00pm
Protesters coming from Khari Ko Bot captured the main road for few minutes. They were chased away by security forces.
One lakh protesters are marching from Budhanilkantha to Chabahil.
Kalanki, 1:30 PM
When police opened fire at the peaceful protest in Kalanki, many people were injured. Reporter Rajaram told us that he is handling an injured person. He said there was blood all over his hand while he was speaking to us. Similarly, in Satdobato, clashes occured. Many people are injured. In this kind of scenario, the casualties will not be known immediately. But, what we can say is, people are participating in overwhelming numbers. And, they are ready to sacrifice for a better Nepal.
According to Nepal Magazine reporter Rajaram Gautam who is in Thankot now, around one lakh protesters have gathered in Thankot. They are heading towards Kalanki. They are stretched over three kilometer in the Highway. They gathered from Satungal, Matathirtha, Dahachowk, Balambu, Gurjudhara, Syuchatar villages. Policemen have blocked in Thankot some 5-7 thousand protesters coming from different parts of Dhading.
At 12 today, all the denizens of Kathmandu are requested to go to their rooftops and chant slogans for loktantra (full democracy). In the areas around Ring Road, people are marching to defy the curfew. The processions are taking place mainly in the suburban areas such as Bhaisepati, Satdobato, Chabahil, Kalanki, Gongabu, Kirtipur, Mandikhatar etc.
Hundreds of protesters are marching towards city. But, the core of the city is wearing a deserted look. In Baneshor, there’s a lull; few people are seen requesting security personnel to allow them to cross the road or run errands.
Meanwhile, Indian special envoy Karan Singh and Foreign Secretary Shyam Sharan are busy meeting political leaders. Today morning, they met Surya Bahadur Thapa and Pashupati Shamsher Rana. King is rumored to give speech calling the political parties for dialogue.

Dead toll on Kalanki is counted 8, says a Reporter of Annapurna Post, one of the national daily of Kathmandu. He said, more 12 from Kalanki are seriously injured and total 45 are hit by bullet.

thanks, but one of my subjects in university was political science so it was quite unnecessary. Sure the soviet union made leaps and strides initially under a communist system but ultimately those gains were wiped out by what was wrong in the same system. Same about Cuba-the gains they made have now been reversed. Sure they still produce a lot of doctors and scientists but thats not the only point is it?
Cuba democratic? Give me a break.
And please m there is a distinction between a socialist system and a communist system so don’t get confused. By the way most co-operatives and state run enterprises run in the communist sense have been total failures, ok? I am sorry for you as well m because you seem to be a romantic in love with a philosophy that has not takers in this world now.

I don’t think it is accurate to say the gains were wiped out or reversed. The gains were slowed and stagnation ensued, as growth rates slowly declined in the 1970s. What brought the actual reversal of the gains was first the attempts at drastic reform in the 1980s and second the restoration of capitalism.
If you want to see whether Cuba is democratic, try spending some time there. Suffice it to say you are not going to get an accurate picture from outside the country. Try living with ordinary Cubans and see what they say, not what CNN says.
You may call me a romantic. I am not going to call you names. I do not believe I am a romantic, because I do not see any of these systems as having been unequivocal successes or failures. I think what you are doing is accepting one very distorted side of the story. I do not question your credentials and I am not attempting to lecture you. Just bear in mind that most of what is published on socialism is biased in one direction or another.
A final point on socialism versus communism: In the west, people often refer to communism as being what existed in the USSR etc, and socialism as being more like social-democracy. Inside the USSR and every other one of these countries, the terminology is that socialism was the actually existing system, and communism was the eventual ideal goal of that system to produce. Hence the name ‘Communist party’–a party within a socialist country advocating for the building of communism. In Marxist theory the two are distinct stages and socialism is the process which may one day lead to communism (maybe 200 years from now or whatever). My terminology is not at all confused.

Look buddy like every political philosopy socialism and communism have their good points-but if you take it as a whole you ultimately have a system that can’t deliver the goods. For me that is a total failure.

I’m not championing the US here mind. I just don’t want a socialist or communist state to be established here in my country. I don’t mind certain elements of socialism (you have too much of it in France) but only enough to be sustainable. We have to be pragmatic.

It is indeed very difficult to explain to people living in poor countries that we, westerners living in the richest countries of this planet, have lots of poors too and that life is not easy at all.

Can you understand the desperation of these people? I think the worst thing for them is that they are not free-not just politically but economically or culturally. They can practice what the state is ok with-but thats a very narrow area. Ofcourse the US embargo does not help.
Like I said before there are elements of socialism that I absolutely adore (besides the Che t-shirt) but elements of it only.

when shooting occured in kalanki today, a white chopper was flying above the spot. Is this just a coincidence or somethig else! Mind it, it was a private chopper (white color) and today all flights were suspended by the airlines. Isnt that odd.

Don’t just make opinions based on the past/present/future of other countries while dealing with the situation of our own. Well, these opinions of course can be taken as points to be considered but they are not governing factors for what type of government system is fit for us.
Well, u must be aware of the socio-economic status of NEpal. Here, per-capita income is 350$ or so(well, i don’t know exact figure). Wait, i’ve used the word ‘socio-economic’ instead of economic before giving the data. Although economically the figure might imply that a Nepalese has a property worth 350$, analysing the social structure, we can say that more than 50% people have less than 100$. The main problem to any political unrest is not just poverty- but the expediting rate of inequality between rich and poor. Also, in the above figure the assets of King and his kith/kins are not included . IF it is to be included then the per capita index is sure to scale to a significant figure.

If it was intended at me I do truly appreciate your delicate insult… It has been a long time for me not hearing it.
I would just tell you that if Nepal is not my homeland, I have been living and working there for a long time in the 80’s, as a trekking guide. And that I fought a lot for improving porters and staff’s lives, struggling with travel agencies in Europe and even loosing my job for having done that.
I undertook also the first Transhimalayan Traverse in 89/90 (From Srinagar to Ilam) along with Mukti Gurung, on a total equalitarian basis : same bags, no porter, local style, and 50/50 on the book that was published afterwards.
Dr. Brian too was meddling into Nepal’s business. They deported him.

So, immidiate step needed is the equal distribution of property and then allowing the free economic policy afterwards. In other case, allowing the capitalists to amass enough riches first and then providing oppertunity for the underprivilaged ones will take a very long long time and will be another form of regression followed by depression.

I’m back.
I know our people are desperately poor. but communism/socialism is not the answer. i would go for a capitalist model with elements of socialism-such as free primary education (with regional wise university scholarships for the bright ones, free health care (a proper one)and if and when the country can afford it benefits (dole) for the unemployed and elderly. Most democracies in the West Europe and in Japan already have this. It does cost the state but it’s good. Nepal needs to follow a capitalist model because we need to trade with other countries to prosper. We have a lot of potential-hydropower, tourism, trade, tea, herbs, handicrafts etc and cheap hard working labour.
If we have a stable, democratic country where the government encourages business and people are given the freedom to chose what they want to do I think we could be easily one of the richest countries in S. Asia (per capita income wise).
shaha king must be counting his final hours. people are ready make sacrific for democratic republic of nepal. i hope this time leaders do not compromise like they did in 1990.

I will not go into a long discussion of Cuba now, but I will tell you this: The vast majority of people who leave Cuba for the US are doing so for economic reasons, the same reason that millions of Mexicans and other Latin Americans try to go to the US, the same reason people from all over the 3rd world go to the US. Cuba is a 3rd world country, not a rich country, it is resource poor, and economic opportunities are much greater in the 1st world. People are not fleeing Cuba or other Latin American countries for political reasons, but for economic reasons. Go to Cuba and see how people live if you want to understand it.
