General Strike Day IX Updates

Seven Party Alliance (SPA) vows to continue the people’s movement more strongly amidst call from the King for dialogue

By UWB! Team

King Gyanendra called the political parties for dialogue in his New Year’s message but the leaders of the various political parties called it ‘old wine in old bottle’ claiming that the call keep ‘no meaning’ to the ongoing people’s movement.

Girija Prasad Koirala, as seen on Kantipur Television, said the movement would continue until the king returns the rights of the citizens. “I have told the King in past that there are two rivers flowing parallel – one of democratic force and the other of republic,” he told the television. “And the situation today is that they are more likely to converge.”

He said the people would decide everything now. He also added that the people, even ministers, suppressing the movement would not be spared. The power of public pressure.

Leaders of other parties too called the King’s call ‘meaningless’. And it looks like after two days of almost normal life for the people of capital, the movement would be more violent again.

Although it looked like the movement has lost the momentum, it hasn’t. Professionals and other organizations continued their protest, while thousands of people rallied in Kiritipur and other region of the country. In Chitwan, thousands participated in the funeral of the Tulsi Chhetri, the woman killed during the movement.

Meanwhile, the fund created to help the hospital to make available the free treatment to the injured demonstrators, more than 35 lakhs has been collected. People from around the country are donating for the fund and it would certainly be bigger in coming days. UWB! requests all readers to donate for the fund.

yes, let the people decide. go to elections. but wait. you cant do that. you have already lost your face amongst your own people. more than a decade of massacre in nepal will not help you win the elections. you know that. no you want to get back to power without having to go through an election.
    thats it.

Nepal: US embassy ready for evacuation, King plans for exile
    BY D .Michael Vandeveer

Kathmandu,15 April, (Asiantribune.com): Nepal remains tense as the 7-Party agitation against the Monarchy gains strength and the Maoist continue to have success on the battle-field. While sources within the Palace report the King and his family are preparing for exile.

The recent Municipal elections proved to be a rebuff to the Nepalese King and have been denounced by the 7-Party Alliance, the Maoist, the UN and the International Community as un-democratic.

Earlier in February, US Ambassador James Moriarty in a “Town Hall Meeting” for the American Community stressed, “the need for maps to everyone’s homes”, and promised GPS readings for all homes of US Citizens by February 20th.

“Things are going to get worse in the coming months so please have your “go-bag” ready so that you can evacuate in a minutes notice”, the Ambassador reported to have warned and described the situation in Nepal as , “a mess and getting worse”. But later this was denied by the US Embassy.

“The Maoist may take advantage of there being no government, and come in and take it over”, US Ambassador reported to have cautioned the American community in the meeting.

The Ambassador said the Maoists are threatening Nepalese employees of the US Gov., as well as Nepalese in US funded projects.

Meanwhile, on February-1, 2005, King Gyanendra suspended all civil and democratic rights in Nepal and has ruled with an Iron-Fist from the throne.

According to eye witness reports, journalist, peace and trade union activist, representatives of civil-society, and members and supporters of the 7-Party Alliance have been beaten, arrested, brutalized on a daily basis.

Human-Rights Organizations and the UN have condemned the Nepalese King and the RNA (Royal Nepalese Army) for Crimes against Humanity and demanded a return to Constitutional Democracy.

The US, a major arms supplier, and trainer of the RNA have steadfastly condemned any peace-talks between the Maoist insurgents and the 7-Party Alliance, while paying lip-service to peace.

A Senior US Military advisor, retired Army Lieutenant General Edwin P. Smith, President of the Honolulu-based Asian Pacific Center for Security Studies was rushed to Kathmandu last month to access the deteriorating situation. Without US arms and aid the Kingdom would be bankrupt.

Economist estimated that after June this year, there will be no possibility of paying civil-servants and the 150,000 strong RNA and police.

The Maoists have threatened the King with execution for, “crimes against the Nepali people”.

It is not if, but when King Bir Bikhram Shah will leave the Himalayan Kingdom for exile?

The major question is, will the Rana controlled RNA support the New Republic and allow the Maoist to lay down their arms and join the 7-Party Alliance in democratic elections, or will the RNA continue to suppress the democratic aspirations of the people of Nepal?

    Shirish Rana: What a sleazeball.

Listen to what he had to say.

Shirish Shamsher Rana, the information minister, said: “Whatever pontification the West is giving about democracy to the king, it should be directed at the political parties.”

“My king does not make mistakes. The king listens to his people. Why don’t the political parties listen to the people?”

“My king does not make mistakes”? What kind of a moron says things like that? Does he really believe “his king” is God? Where do these guys come from, guys like Shirish Rana? Villagers believing the ‘King’ is God is one thing, but this guy?

God, chuck these morons out. They’re going to drag us back to the dark ages otherwise.

I don’t know about crack. Maybe Mr. Rana wound up in Harlem one day and discovered its delights. But he’s certainly smoking something. Maybe its the export grade hash our beloved ‘Prince’ smokes. Gives him visions.

Certain people shouldn’t smoke marijuana or hash. They say chronic marijuana use can mimic the effects of schizophrenia in some people. I think I know of one or two people like that.

I dont know what the problem of people is really. the first step of democracy is election and they boycott it when it was held. The 7 parties say they want democracy but when an election is held they do not participate. The king is doing the right thing, but its not the right way. Actually who does people want to come in power? King; No! The political parties; who quarrel for postion and power; NO! Some external forces by UN; look at what is happening in IRAQ because of it. So its a deadlock. You dont what this or that but you want peace, and where do you get that from.

i like the article by VanDeer Michael. but before anything like that to happen, i doubt this P Shaha will allow it to happen. it would not be exaggerated to think that this guy dont want to see himself on the throne. i am sure this fella has lots of supporter in RNA. so dont be surprise if you see P Shaha doing thing to G Shaha that he has done to his uncle and cousins. it is also possible that someone acting role of Raspautin advicing all mumbo jumbo things to P Shaha, including to decide aspicious time and day to execute another royal massacre, best day for P Shaha for the throne etc.

    Citizen,

The demand is for a constituent assembly. If the king beleives in democracy why does he not agree to it? It would answer the SPAs demands, it would answer the Maoists demands.

Because elections can be quite a sham, read below what wikipedia says (to which I agree) :

“The word “democracy” has acquired a highly positive connotation over the second half of the 20th century, to such an extent that even widely acknowledged dictators regularly declare their support for “democracy” and often hold pre-arranged show elections. Nearly all of the world’s governments claim to be democratic.”

Anyway this is the sane king dimissed a democratcally elected government. So even if elections are held in a years time what is there to stop him from doing the same thing? A constituent assembly with a new constitution that clearly restricts the role of the monarch as a ceremonial head with no executive powers is a must. The new consitution must expressly state that the control of the RNA is to be under the elected representatives and not the King.

If the Kantipur and Ktm post have got it correct then Girija has not only said that the Maoists are very much a part of the protests but they are welcome to join. This after denying any involvement of the Maoists on BBC a few days back. What can one say about Girija.
Knowing this it is what people like I have being saying, that the protests have been taklen over by the Maoists. For a change it looks like the govt. sources were right on the button. No doubt we are in dangerous waters.

As for the King calling the parites for dialougue, as it is now very clear that he has with the information Minister not mincing words on the matter, I suggests that the parties should go for talks, but I also agree that the parties go foir talks with one demand made compul;sory and that is the immediate restoration of the parliament and the end to the govt. of the King. If the King means it he should agree and an all party govt. ahould be formed, then they can take it from there with all the wisdom one hopes that they have accumulated from the past fourteen months.

As for Girija, he is untrustworthy to all concerned. This is the moment where no matter what some people say, is the moment where we have to drop Girija out of the process once and for all. He difinitely should stay in the background.

Girija has become senile-he is 84 and this is a natural ageing process. I hope that a good leadership arises from the NC, though I have serious doubts.

Hey if the Maoists are dropping their weapons and joining the protests like mainstream parties and organizations-that’s great. Stone throwing, tyre burning is a lesser evil and outright bombings and shootings.

And regarding the King’s offer for dialogue well some people can be fooled all the time.

You are really naive, it is confirmed, you say that “if the Maoists are dropping their weapons and joining the protests like mainstream parties and organizations-that’s great.”

Do you think their peoples army in the countryside or anywhere else for that matter have dropped their weapons. Why cant you get it through your stubborn skull that while the King and the parties are playing it out, they are gaining the upperhand as each day passes. Are you sure that the Maoists have not coerced people to take part in the rally who are not Maoists, there is talk of entire villages being emptied and forced to go on rallies outside Kthamndu under threat of their guns. Do you want to leave such reports to just hope that it is’nt so? By ignoring the issue now and just saying let’s do it one at a time will be too little too late. Both the issues of democracy and the Maoists have to be addressed and adressed without wasting anytime. But if you are set on your views one can only try and make you understand, the rest is obviously up to you. The parties and democrats have to ask the Maoists to stop their game of provocation and even leave the protests to them and let the protests continue in a democratic manner. But the sooner dialogue is held the better for us all.

Why do you think they wouldn’t? The 12 point agreement the SPA had with the Maoists was done very publicly. The Maoists will try to take as much advantage of this chaos as possible. If I was a Maoists I would do the same. So stop stating the obvious.

Anyway who’s to blame for all this? You think the king means what he says when he calls for dialogue? Look who’s being naive. When the UN, European Union, Norway offered to mediate for peace in Nepal who rejected their offers and who accepted?

It’s rich you calling me naive.

BVut I’m sure you are’nt at least they stand for something, but you seem to oppose everything except yourself, that is the enigma? Do you believe in anything at all or just generalised terms that you pick up from phrases or books which you have little experience of? Ha ha, tt. I guess I pressed your buttons! You called me naive..so I have the right to explain. Really it amazes me that an intelligent person like you can’t figure out who the real problem is. If the King had accepted UN mediation the chances of solving the problems of Maoist insurgency, democractic rights, constitutional crisis would have been given the best chances to succeed. But who alwat rejects this? That is why I have said one step at a time…fight on too many fronts and like Napolean, Hitler et all you will find out that your resources are stretched too thin to succeed.

Man you are really naive. Ask the Maoists to stop their violence? Ha! I’m sure if we all ask very sweetly and politely they will listen and cease their violence!

for those who hates the movement for democracy just because of girija and political leaders..

the literal meaning of Monarch is rule by king…democracy implies..rule by people..Girija is just a part of democracy just like you and me..i see myself every possibility to replace Girija in the foceeable future..but I can not be a king of nepal thousands time I reborn…so you see the beauty of democracy..

So guys..you see my point..lets argue..monarch against democracy….not king against Girija..maoist republic against multiparty republic..not prachanda against makune..

lets discuss ..who is the good leader and bad leader..Girija againast narahari acharya, deuba against pradip Giri..

I dont see any point discussing king (institution) agaist other political leaders (Individuals). Even if you insist in bringing Girija into the discussion against king..i say..Girija is thousand times better than King ..boyee..Nothing has been proved againast Girija even by akthiyar or by adalat..lets make king and his evil son face the justice..I am sure it will take no time to hang them till death.

but I again plead you guys ..discussing Girija against king is an insult of yourselves..Girija is not the synonym of democracy..democracy is all about you and me..about our right to fight..right to freedom..right to select our representatives and right to form our governement…

i hope this helps..please dont bring girija back to the discussion just to insult you..you can insult girija but dont insult me, you and others.

Before Girija said that there was no Maoists involvement an was infact denyiong their involvement on international media, people like yourself including this blog site said the state and even Mahara is bullshitting. As the facts change so too seems to be your views. This is probably a victory for the Maoists as they are now moving the general public like you towards them. As Girija said the two streams are flowing separately, but they may join together very soon.

And yes you have ask through the political process the Moaists to stop their violence and lay down their arms, otherwise the alternative is only military action and violence. Or do you know another way for them to lay down their arms without pressing their buttons?

  35. Kirat Avatar

    tt,

The King can defy the Indians, Americans, EU et all on abuse of state power but he does not have the guts to defy them on UN mediation? Yeah right! You are correct in stating that UN mediation was offered before February 1, 2005 but wasn’t the King the defacto power then too? Remember he has actually been in power ever since he dimissed the Deuba government in Oct. 2002? It’s a fact so lets not argue on this.

I call you the naive one because you seem to believe that the Maoists will give up their weapons through mere political process. Give me a break. They are the ones who rejected the political process and started an armed revolution.

My idea of tackling the Maoist problem is the way the British handled the Malayan Communist insurgency-through a combination of military and political processess. If you want to open your mind, check the link above.
