In Support of Democracy

Lets Salute the People in the Street!

By Krishna Adhikari

When our sisters and brothers are defying the curfew in the street for the cause of freedom and democracy meant for us all, it is time that we disobey the orders of duty and salute them.

The fact that for the first time in Nepal’s history Nepali people have been defying curfew and are ready to die for the democracy is a perfect indication that one man’s dictatorship in the 21st century’s Nepal is not tolerated in any case. When a growing number of industrial workers, professionals and civil servants are joining the political activists and common citizenry, the movement is gaining momentum as a popular uprising.

Enough is enough. Thanks to antidemocratic disposition of the government and sheer disrespect to the people’s desire towards peace, people are compelled to take the street in an unprecedented manner with the do or die mentality.

There have been unpopular governments in the past decade, but never have been an anti-people government like this. The last one-year of the rule of Chairman Gyanadra has been full of lies and betrayal. It has proved a dictatorial government. This government has done nothing to serve the aspiration of people towards peace, but serving the self-interest of the individuals in it. In absence of an accountable government of people, bizarre things have happened: thousands of people died in massacres, but the Chairman of the government had no reason to visit the bereaved ones; hundreds of people died of starvation, but the Chairman, his family and allies have had billions to spend in pleasure trips.

Ignoring the aspiration of the people and candid advices from friends of Nepal that Maoist insurgency cannot be brought to end without going through peace process, the government has clearly chose a path to prolong the war. Further, failing to reciprocate ceasefire and taking other opportunities towards peace process, the government has given a clear message that it is not for peace, but the opposite. Rather, ruling the country though draconian ordinances by curtailing the basic freedoms of all sorts and denying the democratic rights, the government has pushed a massive number of people to the republic camp.

Later than never, thanks to the realisation among the opposition political parties that solution to the Maoist problem is prerequisite for peace, democracy and development; their efforts to make Maoists accept the democratic values and freedom has given a ray of hope among the affected people.

The dictatorial predisposition of the government composed of notoriously popular ministers who have a history of suppressing people with harsh means during Panchyat era is indicative that it will apply all measures to suppress the movement. The cowardice actions of government shooting peaceful demonstrators have already taken some lives and injured many. However, people seem to determine to ignore the bullet for the sake of democracy once and for all.

Except the handful feudalists, no section of Nepali people will have a secure future without freedom and democracy. That is why there is an increasing participation of people from all walks of life, including civil servants and professional, not only at the cost of their job, but also life. It is the time that we recall the 1990 movement when there had been realisations that the demonstrators in the street were not the enemy of the people policing them and vice versa. When our sisters and brothers are defying the curfew in the street for the cause of freedom and democracy meant for us all, it is time that we disobey the orders of duty and salute them.

It is the right time that The Nepalese and friends of Nepal living anywhere in the earth extend solidarity to the movement and the families of martyrs. Lets respect the martyrs who placed their self-interest behind the national interest for freedom, peace and democracy.

End of autocracy must be the objective of the Movement No compromise with a conspirator dictator.

Krishnaji is busy in contributing for democratic movement in Nepal. Thanks for your efforts. I am sending this from a dozen house away from where you live.

How can the movement be so weak when thousands of people of all walks of life have come down to the streets demanding the end of conspiratorial feudal rule in our motherland.

Now, we all have to pressurise the security forces, most of them are from the general public and even from feudal are also the supporters of late king Birendra and some are democratic minded ( we must not forget how Rana’s helped to overthrow Ranas in 1950)and the government media which is misusing our contributions tax.
The days of Mandales have gone, this message should be passed clearly to every security men, Mandales exploiting the state media and some employees in the Sighdurbar including Lokman Singh Karki mandale.
