General Strike Day VIII Updates

Government instruct Cable Operators to stop airing Kantipur Television as the mobile services resumed

By UWB! Team

[7:00PM] State Minister for Communication Shrish Shamsher Rana called all cable operators for a meeting and asked them not to air Kantipur Television through their cable. Most of the cable operators have already stopped airing the channel.

Meanwhile, Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) has issued a press release demanding immediate restoration of press freedom and expressing solidarity with the protest programs of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ). NSJF has also condemned government decision to use the stadium and covered hall as the detention center and has asked to stop politicizing sports sector.

[6:30 PM] Traffic in the valley is almost normal.

This afternoon, a mass meeting was held at Gongabu where thousands of people participated. The state stationed a sizeable number of security force (I counted three armed police trucks, two army trucks, an armour vehicle and half-a-dozen mini-TATA used by policemen), but they didn’t intervene.

Nepali Congress’ Ram Sharan Mahat, Nepali Congress (Democratic)’s Prakash Man Singh and UML’s Yogesh Bhattarai were among those who addressed the meeting.

Meanwhile, the mobile serivices of Nepal Telecom resumed services from this afternoon. Both post-paid and pre-paid mobiles started working. However, the mobile service of Mero Mobile, a private company, hasn’t resumed yet.

At Pulchowk, students of Engineering Institute disrupted the traffic for more than an hour.

Without closing traffic and business, a few places of the capital and many places outside the capital is continuing general strike for Day Eight

File Photo (April 10) by Shruti Shrestha

[10:00 AM] Yesterday, although the traffic in Bhaktapur was almost nil, Kathmandu roads were different. There were lots of private vehicles, especially motorbikes, taxis and a few tempos and microbuses and very few buses were seen plying on the roads.

Today, traffic in Bhaktapur has also increased during the morning. At Kaushaltar, demonstrators rallied demanding democray and end of autocratic rule.

It looked like Kaushaltar has became the happening place in Bhaktapur as more than a hundred policemen stationed at the place and before the rally began, both DSP of the district were there.

Police didn’t intervene on the rally but didn’t allow the people to continue the sit-in program as of yesterday.

At 9:30AM, I heard that people burnt a vehicle at Surya Binayak, but this report is yet to be confirmed. The vehicles decreased a lot at around 10:00AM.

During the rally, I saw a vehicle of a public enterprises with four plaincloth soldiers in it. They were holding guns under their jackets and only a part of it was visible.

    Hey UWB Guys,
This is nonsense and flabbergasting : you say vehicles have decreased by 10 AM on April 13 and the clock reads only 9:45 as I write to you. Are you charlatans, predictors or prophets ? Be correct simpletons rather than premature bhabishyabetta !

This is dedicated to all those Nepalese who are still in the comfort of their homes, seemingly helpless, yet wishing to do something about the situation, yet without the guts to do anything at all!

    INCESSANT RANTINGS

    Worshipping gods of foreign lands,
beholden by their might we stand,
    dazed in servile bewilderment,
white skin, greenbacks, quids and greed,
learning the lingua franca of the day,
the thick skinned, seasoned and salivating,
Pavlovian dog-men puke out guttaral speeches.

They take pride in their gait,
grotesque bellies, nurtured with wild boars,
nurtured in hate, their bellies strapped to formality,
    in uniforms of the state,
    rotundas of dowra suruwals.

Did someone you know die today?
Or would you say everyone’s leaving anyway!

Paddy fields have been fully irrigated,
    bloodied streams have innundated,
    surplus productivity and self-sufficient hatred.

    Let us gorge ourselves,
    with lamentations,
of all that is around us,
we die content in our discontents.

Which is more painful I ask,
the birth or the death of nations?

    Let us all give in,
    to the black addiction,
let us drown in the incessant pool of rantings,
    and spend another day….

    Ziggy Dai

Today is going to be a decisive day to overthrow this tyrranic regime if the agiatation doest not lose any momentum and those in the streets can still show courage for at least one more day…I am sure it is going to be automatically intensified from tomorrow onwards..most of the people who have not come to the streets are still expecting something out of KG from possible today’s or tomorrow’s speech..however it is going to be the same..imbecilic KG will again repeat his hyperbole..”the situation has improved since royal takeover’, “My government will reconcile with all the constitution parties and make way for election in 2063′ and other bla bla..this will generate more frustration and anger among the wider section of the people and more people participation in the movement will be inevitable… it is not expected out of KG that he will bow down within few days or few weeks to come…but this is good for the new full democracy to come…longer the movement continue..greater the chance that people recognize and understand the cost and paramountcy of democracy….and I personnally dont want loktantra to be arrived at least for 10 more days…I am coming back to Nepal on April 23rd…on the very next day I will be on the street to join this greatest movement of nepal..I want to be a proud Nepali in the forceeable future by playing my part and contributing in this defining revolution to topple the autocratic royal regime..I dont want to miss this life time oppurtunity to free my motherland from thoose who have been killing my country for centuries. I urge all the bloggers here to play there part as well..dont underestimate your force..go to the street and fight for your right and fight for your great motherland

So, I request everybody to come out of their houses, workplace and show solidarity for complete democracy in this historic moment. your peaceful support and solidarity will help bring the positive result. So Please wake up and come out. Please donate your valuable time for the shake of democracy.

They were very much active and were shouting about the internal plitics of Nepal but when the demonstration really started and the police atrocities strted, they are SILENT. The only danger right now is on the streets of cities due to the maoist led protests and in the villages due to maoist guns. Provoking cops is not the way of peaceful protests. Next they will start provoking the army and that will end up in more sorrow. The SPA have lost the grip on these protests and the Maoists have taken over. They have hoodwinked everyone and still we follow our leaders like lamb to the slaughter house.

  12. gurkhali Avatar

“Complete democracy” is a vague Maoist terminology, they imply that it means getting rid of the King today, but as they grow in power it will include being rid of “feudal elements”, which in their dictionary means anyone who is educated or even speaks English – politicans, doctors, lawyers, teachers, journalsists, anyone who has studied in an English medium school for whatever period of time,Business people, gurus, saints, priests, definitely the rich and also the middle class (the beurgeose class as they term it)- It will be a holocaust!!!!!! They won’t themselves last twelve months, but the damage would have already been done.
People get a grip on the situation will you.

I hope you are correct. But that is just my hope and wishful thinking. Even the RNA has not been able to get rid of them, and you say you will. Let’s not be naive.

  15. Bravo Avatar
    Bravo

The solution of maoist problem is not RNA..it has been realized by everyone..even the king..thats why he wants to keep on deploying the RNA so that the problem does not get solved..and he can rule the country in the name of bringing the country into peace. why maoist has been fighting for several years..only one thing several past talks didnot able to reciprocate is their demand about the constitue assembly for republicanism..everyone knows..if the kingship is gone..they have nothing to fight for..every other causes they are fighting for can easily be addressed once the king do away.

  16. gurkhali Avatar
    gurkhali

I agree that the RNA is not the solution by itself, but they are definitely part of the solution, after all the Maoists have guns too. If we dont have security and special forces are not used for counter insurgency operations the political side of the argument will fall on deaf ears of the Maoists.

  17. gurkhali Avatar
    gurkhali

As for the argument that once the King goes they have nothing else to fight for – that is just not true. When King Birendra was alive with very little and sometimes no interference in government affairs(even the Maoists said he was a good King), they still would not budge. Their struggle is not just against the kingship, but against all feudal elements, which I have outlined previously. The King himself is just one person, the system is a whole different affair in the eyes of the Maoists, and to rid the system of this so called feudal elements (remember they are against any form of religion as this is also feudal to them), they have to rid themselves of all feudals. As James Moriarty told Bijay Kumar Pandey in an interview on Kantipur television – ” I dont know Bijay, you look pretty feudal to me”, at which Bijay Kumar was caught off guard and did not know what to say and mumbled a “Let’s see”. I’m afraid waiting to see will be too late.

    Gurkhali,

I am trying to glorify maoist and their movement..I equally hate them as I hate the king…but what i belive that they also representing a wider section of nepali people and they are also a political party unlike monarchy…things have changed for past 12 years when they started so called people’s war..i dont belive that they would be successful in making nepal a communist republic as they were wishing before..the recent interviews by their supremo in various news agecies have proved that…even if they are just spreading the propogondas…they would never be successful in establishing a communist republic in Nepal…the recent agaitation against king has proved that people can not be supressed by the power of arms…when the king with full supports of more than hundred thousands of armys is not being succeffull in depriving the people of their democratic right ..how do you expect maoist to achieve what king did not. from your previous comments, i sense that you r a person who loves democratic right and freedom and you are giving king just a benifit of doubt…but what i want to tell you is that fear of possible autocracy by maoist can not be the justification of another autocracy by king

    Bravo,
Thanks for the typo clarification, I was worried there for a while.
Let me remind you that these are the same people who slit throats of young children for showing the army the way they took from the village, labelling them as feudal elements (a poor villager and a child to boot). We are not talking about people who will wince at lining up protestors and shooting them on the spot with real bullets, and without the media or human rights activists around to record the event.
I dont justify any form of facism, but even if you are correct that the Maoists will not be able to establish their form of fascism, I will still say – in most of our rural areas they already have, it is just a question of winning the urban centres. If we can fight and keep them off from urban areas, still there is the question of their strongholds in our rural areas. This is why the army is key, of course used as special forces in smaller groups, because without military pressure and political prowess how can we liberate our fellow citizens from the hinterlands? And believe me we should have already begun the fight as democrats, because out there they are already under Maoist tyranny.

  22. Bravo Avatar

    gurkhali,
well..dontyou honestly think that the situation of contry has further detoriated after the direct rule of the king? what army has been able to achieve for past 4-5 years except protecting their own barracks. has not maoist been able to bolster their strength during these years? this all confirms that miltary action is not the solution of the current crisis of which king and his chamchas are catagorrically opposed to. i strongly believe that king will never allow the initation of process of dialogue because he fears maoist problem can not be solved without costing his throne. anyway i have previously made it clear that one tyranny does not justify the another. people belived king because he told he would solve this problem within three years..what he has done within one year that he further aggravated the problem…and what I dont understand why you prefer king’s direct rule to democracy..dont you genuinly think that king is trying to do the same in urban areas what maoist are doing there in country side..he is even depriving the peaceful demonstration by the professional and firing bullets in their head..the firings in gogabu day before is no better that the cruelity of maoist. We are being trapped between the two guns..at least maoist have been able to erradicate the caste system and protect the right of dalit..what king has done is nothing rather than garnering state money inside the palace and allowing his bhardwars and puppets of taking advantage of the situation

  23. gurkhali Avatar
    gurkhali

Yes Bravo the situation has deteriorated. But so has army offensive gotten more. It is inevitable that the Maoists put up a stronger fight when the army has also.
Also the Maoists have had the perfect opportunity to bring SPA on their side, this is why they have a free playing field.
The RNA could not achieve much in the past due to indecisiveness on the part of past governments when it came to Maoists (probably due to fear by the leaders in power of taking the wrong decision or coming under the hit list of the Maoists). Even the RNA is fed up, when they had surrounded the Maoists in the past (King Birendra was King and Girija PM)there was no attack or capture ordered issued. This order should have got the go ahead from both the King and the PM. Who knows who stopped it.
Also, there is the whole issue of setting up the armed police (Girija’s ego many say) instead of using army special forces right from the start.

It is’nt only Girija, he only had the best opportunity, the other governments (the King is a constitutional monarch, especially before Feb. 1) or their coalition partners also showed the same reluctance, but by the time it came around to them the Maoists had become much stronger especially after operation Kilo Sera (we missed our best opportunity to contain the Maoists in Girija’s time). Then there was the case of the governments having to have failed talks with the Maoists, only to realise that they just needed the time of ceasefire to regroup and rearm. I’m afraid past governments due to them being weak or stubborn in the case of Girija have been fooled by the Maoists several times, and this time with this SPA alliance it is no different.

    bijay shrestha:
The international community has condemed the mass arrests, use of excesive force etc. In fact Richard Boucher mentioned that the King’s policies have led nowhere. Sashir Rana then called the comment unfortunate. Beyond that I don’t think the international community can do anything else. After all this is Nepal internal problem so countries cannot do anything except verbally support the democratic movement.

Actually Gurkali it was Deuba who really screwed up. Because at one point the Maoists wanted serious negotiatios but that Idiot Deuba did not take them seriously and went off on a visit to New Delhi. Operation Kilo Sera was the biggest mistake – it was after that this movement really intensified!

    Bravo,
I would like to comment on your view. Are you supporting the same Girija Prasad or the SPA leaders who miserably failed to bring the maoist to the talking table? The corruption level which went sky high during their rein in the government .It was their activities which sparked the moaist voilence and “led to this situation, political parties themselves fell into their own Khaldo”. They couldn’t do anything, rather didn’t do anything because they only wanted the “cursi” not the development of countries. They were the one who aggravated the people dividing them into casts so to get vote from them.
Don’t be in illusion that this mere 3 4 days so called revolution is going to liberate us from maoist. They are just using the SPA as laucnhing pad and when they met their objective they are sure to ditch the parties which will again create havoc.

Don’t you see how strong maoist have become. The arms they have in their arsenal. They torture people, recruit children in their army, bomd school during exam. Let me highlight one thing also. First Maoist didn’t even touched the monarchy or the army men, only the police and the political parties. They were completely against the political parites (now SPA) and killed their cadres. Now how can they again have agreement with the same people whom they disliked and started people’s war against. Don’t you see they don’t have any common agenda to go for. Always chainging their stance.

Bravo you said that after democracy is acheived they have nothing to fight for. NO they will now have everything to fight for. They will target Kathmandu and after that sorry brother we will be Afganisthan in no time.

The revolution may from the autocratic king. I am also against the king. I am also fed up with his activities. I supported him thinking that he would do something for the country. But the solution lies on the fact that the leaders should back down, leave their want for “cursi”, cursi ko moha tyagnu parcha and give way for the new generation. The king should also back down return democracy to the country and launch attack on maoist with the help of internationl community.

THe only way country can progress is when there are new generations leaders in the cursi. Not the people with same old stale, rotten buddi Girija, Deuba, Madhav kumar and CO.

Another idea would be to investigate all the irregularities in a fair manner such that the money that they put in their pocket during 13 years of democracy could be retrieved which would be great boost for the country.

well you guys are having a nice discussion here. but let me add something the way i view it.
nepal started deteorating when sher bahadur deuba was the prime minister. it is Nepali Congress who really screwed up. sher bahadur deuba was KICKEd out of the party was he not? he was the prime minister of a democratic nation with no party. it was sher bnahadur deuba. it was deuba again, when the maoist first started and they had demanded few things which deuba did not adresss properly. as a leyman we did not think it would eventually be such a big problem but as the leader of the nation Deuba should had been foresighted. Kingship, acording to my understanding was not the sole reason when maoists started out.
King Birendra is also one person who was at fault for not utilizing the army against the maoists when he should had done so.
King Gyanendra… he has his fair share of fault but i honestly believe that the monarch has lost the support and love of a lot many people on the base that the general public thinks he was the one to trigger the Royal Massacre. and add on top of that the infamous crown prince Paras.
i do not support active monarchy in any degree and in the same time i do not support uprooting the monarchy as well. i beleive that the king should be a ceremonial monarch under the constituion of the nation. monarchy is an important part of our culture as a whole from the days way way gone.
one thing let me add is that one thing that i hate about the present monarch or even the late king is that their failure to honour the real force who has been fighting continously against the rebels. i hate it when i see only the general or a colonel get medals which invariably happens to be some rana or shah.
and also i would hope the people have a little bit of thought for the police and the army of nepal. what are they supposed to do. now people call them the Royal Police, when NC was in power it was the NC police and then the UML police. what are they supposed to do? catch the criminals, fight the maoists, take care of the riot and vanadlism and what not. RNA. what sould they do? take care of the over the top show of vandalism or fight the terroist or gaurd the nation.
Neapl Police and the RNA both have their share of total bull crap. but, they still deserve their share of respect.
i was writing something else it ended up being something else…oh well i ll just post it.

This is how things will settle for peace for Nepalis.

Girija will announce the formation of Republic and interim government. If he wants to be interim President, so be it. After that he will announce ceasefire and as new head of the state and immediately order cessation of military operation against the Maoists. Then invite Maoists for talks and subsequently join this interim government to prepare for constituent assembly. Those military, police or beurocratic official who refuse this order will be promptly announced to be relieved from duty by the interim government and their arrest order issued.

Of course at first the military and police will hesitate to follow the order of new government but the fact must be publicised that their disloyalty will be taken as evidence against soon to be announced special tribunal. AND this tribunal will sanction death sentence as maximum penalty. So they will think about it: casting their lot with new Nepal or continue being pet-dogs of Gyanendra and be hanged.

After securing the loyalty of the armed forces, Gyanendra, Paras and all the leading member of the family will be detained along with all the pet-dogs of Gyanendra like Kamal Thapa, Tulsi Giri, Sharad Chandra Shah, Niranjan Thapa etc. and a special tribunal set up. The cases must be filed against them for treason, crimes against humanity, corruption, embezzlement etc. Capital Punishment must reinstated only for the discretion of this tribunal. Gyanendra and Paras will also be prosecuted for Royal Massacre 2001. A special prosecutor will publish the report on the Massacre after the trial.

With all the evidence amassed against these criminals, justices would have no qualms to announce death sentence for each of them. The sentencing should carried out swiftly in public at Open Theatre in Tudhikhel, the following day.

After this a Truth and Reconciliation commission will be set up where Girija, Prachanda, Baburam, Madhav and all will confess their crimes and complicity in previous malfeasance and misdeeds. Girija will start first, from the responsibility he and Sher Bahadur Deuba as his Home Minister bear on the killings of protesters during their reign. Also all the corruption cases like Lauda and kidnapping of MPs etc. will be disclosed in detail. Madhav and the lefties will also confess their own guilt of China Southwest, Mahakali etc. Prachanda and Baburam etc. will confess their responsibility of ordering murders of civilians, political oppositions and general terror.

After that a special prosecutorial panel will deliver verdict on the level of censor these individuals will receive. Justice will not be free, nor will it be blind. It will be prudent. If Girija is found guilty, then he like all other average accused must stand trial. Ditto for Madhav, Prachanda and Baburam.

As most of them will likely be found guilty of one crime or other, the political space will be cleansed of corrupt and decaying corpses and Nepal will have fresh start.

A new generation will take over where old failed utterly.

Long live Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

Yes, I also believe in the complete democracy where every Nepali can exercise their right to choose the perfect person for leading the country and this is also possible by complete democracy.

But SPA will never allow the new generations to show up. They will simply try to be minister themselves again and again and again. They only way to solve this problem is to have constitution which doesnot allow a person to be Minister more then 2 times, like in America.
What do you say for that?

well, I dont think that not allowing the leaders to be prime minister or miniter more than two times is necessarily a good solution. this may even deprive us having a genuine leader (if we find one) leading the country for alonger period of time. A corrupt person dosenot wait for years to destroy the nation…whereas to build a prosporous state, we need more than decades.

Look tony blair has been elected three times , John howard is there for years and they are leading the economy of their country stronger and stronge

Well, a “good” leader always tries to keep up with the “good” work of the previous leaders and follow the path. Also improves on the mistakes of the previous ones.

If such constitution is not drafted then Giriga or the like the same will never leave the dream of becoming prime minister till his death. Well look at the situation of Krishna Prasad bhattrai who still says that he will become prime minister. Look at America every two years a new face shows with some fresh ideas and every one knows where America is. We should learn from the one’s who have done so well and follow their path.

Also a good person will never like to be on the power for long. He just wants to show the next generations what to do and how to do it. Take the example of Nelson Mandela who showed the people how to work towards development. He never wanted power after his first term.

feel free, supress me!, its mandatory in autocracy,

    Hi all,
I wanted to know if eveyone putting their comment agree with my argument presented above of a constitution that allows a person to be in power for only 2 times.

    mr bijay shrestha,
as you have written that UN and EU is not doing anything even when they have seen such brutality from the police force. what do you expect them to do? You want them to enter into Nepal with another armed force to keep peace. so then there is going to be another kind of problem after that. dont you agree?? so then there is going to be another problem added to the list of problems already..

    Hi All,

Glad to see a decent discussion going on. But, I see two extreme support, Gurkhali supporting KG and Bravo supporting SPA…

I, as a average Nepali, don’t trust either one of them… And I don’t trust the Maobadis as well… So, better than telling the negatives about KG, SPA or Maobadis why don’t you tell us what your suppoted group can offer?

I also guess that you may not actually represent any of them but you can always put your own personal views…

    Mero Desh:
Given a choice between the King and Girija Babu I would choose Girija Babu a hundred times over.
The King has been WORSE at goverance! His fiscal policies are terrible, his cabinate is just has bad and he has polorized the country even more! Tell me one good thing the King has done better then the political parties??
Curruption? Ah just look at the increase in the Royal budget, the unecessary trips to Africa. Man at least when political parties took curruption it was not so centralized!
At least people could write that Girija or Deuba was currupt … Just show me one just one good thing about this King over the political leaders!
And it was not the parties fault that the Maoist movement started. Yes they could have done alot more at the beging to this crisis. But we all know that the Maoist Situation was looming and it was bound to erupt at some point! With all the years of exploitation and marginalization etc. WHAT ELSE can you except?

Why should not Girija try to be prime minister if the people choose him to be so in a compititive people’s franchise again? He is not a divine ruler. Remember! When Girija was ruling the police with 303 guns were fighting no less than the armies, whom you boast of, with most modern weapons. Who ordered the army to come back leaving the poor semi-armed polices in mercy of Maoist in Holery? Don’t try to discredit others to glorify your favourites. Discuss on logic and on principles without vilifying people.

given a choice between King and Girija…

on top of that people must have right to vote King in and out of ‘Kursi’ at their will, like we do with girija, then only you can think of a choice between king and girija, clearly which not the case. so only comparison of king you can make is Saddam. you can not vote them out but sure you can force them out.

Raj, did you read all comments of “Mero Desh”??
Do u really understand english what he is saying up there? if not please scrall up again and again and again.

Bhundai pundit, what say? Think thrice to comment up there. Its really ill comments of yours. check that out once and moderate back with fresh blog soon. People are not fithing for Girija who was the most corruptor an evil one and no brain to better mannage.

    Bhudai Pandit,
You are taking me totally wrong. Come out of illusion and lets talk reality. I never said a choice between Girija and King. I have just stated the reality.

I will again say that I am not in favor of king. He has already shown his incompetency. I want some one who has new idea in this new generatioon. I would never choose Girija or any one of the SPA because they have already shown their incompetency over and over again not once. You know that and entire Nepali Janta know that. I don’t want to take out any of their irregularities.

Instead of expecting the maoist explosion political parties should have taken measures such that the explosion never happened. They simply ignored them as they would do nothing. They were busy filling their pockets with national resources.

I would again like to express that no way I am in favour of king or like his way of wasting the countries resources. I am in favour of democracy and returning sovernity to the people. “I also think that the political parties should give way to the new generations the older ones being the guide liners. NO way the country will move to the path of development if the same people went to the power again. That I can say with 100% confidence.”
