General Strike Day IV Updates

[11:00pm] The situation I witnessed while returning from my office to home was disheartening. At least there were 10 such places where the demonstrators have put on fire and other disturbances. It was not more than 2km and it is impossible for any four wheeler to pass the road.

At Tinkune, there were policemen clearing the road but at Jadubuti, there were two such disturbance. If we have failed to chant press in time, we would have surely hit by bricks by the demonstrators who were there in the dark.

At Herbs Production and Processing Center, a car was burning in the parking area. We waited there till my photojournalist friend took a few photographs. The burning car could even burn the office but as we were moving, a group of army arrived who were reporting the fire over their walkie talkie.

At Manahara Bridge, a similar fire was burning just in front of a petrol pump. At Lokanthali, the temporary police post was vandalized and thrown on the road with the wire they used to protect the post thrown on the road.

At Kaushaltar, the wall of the bus stop was vandalized and with the brick, a wall was created on the middle of the road. Between Ghatthaghar and Kaushaltar, there were two places with such disturbance. At Ghattaghar, it was the similar scene.

I can assume that the similar condition is all around the capital as I heard a number of firing sounds when I was in the office. It’s turning bloody and dirty and I can only hope it will end soon.

[9:00pm] THE STATE IS TURNING RUTHLESS; the demonstrations going bloodly.

At Tinkune, just outside Kantipur Publications, a group of demonstrators were chanting slogans and had just lit a tyre on the road while a group of policemen walked towards them from Baneshwor side. As the policemen advanced, the demonstrators started entering into sideways. The police then fired two rounds of rubber-bullet blankly on them from about 200m (it was all without any warning or so..).

Then I received a telephone from one of my friends in Ghatthaghar who was reporting an incident that happened just after the curfew ended at 8:00pm. The demonstrators were chanting slogans during the blackout when a group of security men including police and army started beating onlookers who had just come out of their houses to look around. Around 10 were badly injured (one of my friends received bad injury on the head and has been rushed to hospital).

[8:15pm] One more onlookers has been killed by security forces. The death toll during onging protest has reached three with the death of Shiva Hari Kunwar, 22, of Walting VDC-7, Kavre. He was shot at when he was looking at the rally organized to protest the killing of Bhimsen Dahal at Banepa. Three others has been injured and the condition of ninth grader Mukesh Kayastha is critical and has been brought to capital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Kamal Thapa organized a press conference and warned people of ‘real curfew’ from Monday. To read the National News Agency news on Thapa’s press conference, click on more at the bottom of this enty.

Similarly, from my office window, I can see a group of people rallying with torch on hands and demanding black-out. Police arrived in two trucks and two vans to disrupt the rally at Tinkune just outside my office and although the major portion of the city is blackened, the torch rally outside my office ended in five minutes.

Kathmandu, April 9: Home Minister Kamal Thapa has said that the government is ready to move ahead by holding a dialogue and through consensus and collaboration with the pro-constitutional political parties.

Speaking at a press conference organized at the Home Ministry here today, Home Minister Thapa said the seven political parties have organized the so-called movement and general strike at the call of the terrorists.

The government would not at any cost compromise with violence, murder and terror, Home Minister Thapa said and added that the terrorists have been carrying the ill-intention of displacing the state power through the use of the seven parties’ flag, banner and name.

The terrorists’ ill-intention would never be successful and the government would ultimately defeat the terrorists, Thapa said and added, “It is essential for the seven parties’ leadership to understand that the so-called movement is now being guided by the terrorists.”

Though the general strike and demonstration has had adverse effect on public life the government has been observing patience and was compelled to issue the curfew order so as to arrange effective security measures.

The Home Minister also expressed gratitude to the people who cooperated with and supported the security measures.

Issuing a curfew order is not a matter of liking and hobby for the government, but the life and property of the people have been protected as a result of it.

The government would immediately withdraw the curfew order as well as the prohibitory order if the seven parties declare that they have renounced the collaboration with the terrorists and if there is improvement in the subsequent situation.

Stating that the leaders and cadres of the seven political parties should understand it clearly that this movement is not a movement for political change like in 1990, Thapa said the cadres of the parties should question their leaders about the significance and objective of the movement.

Responding to a query on the occasion, Minister Thapa said the government has been carrying out its role in a responsible manner and within the existing law and regulations and urged the media sector to disseminate information only after taking note of the circumstances involved.

The government is concerned over the incidents that took place at Chitawan and Pokhara, but misleading news have come out in connection with both the incidents.

He said, “security personnel in Pokhara were compelled to fire after their warning was ignored in course of the demonstrations”.

Likewise, the security personnel fired at Chitawan in order to control the agitators that went vandalizing one government office after another and there was also a huge explosion. Three women sustained bullet injuries in the incident, he said. RSS

[5:30pm] News from various districts say that people rallied for the democracy. In Lekhnath Municipality, more than 7000 rallied and police has to fire tear-gas shells and rubber-bullets to control the situation. UML’s Dinanath Dhakal was badly injured by the bullet while a-dozen other were injured by baton charging.

In Nawalparasi, government employees joined the protest programs while in almost all cities administrative works came to a halt after the employees protested with a black band around their arms.

The Seven Party Alliance (SPA) in a meeting this afternoon has decided to give continuity to the ongoing protest until the regressive force comes to its knees. According to their program, the nation would witness a blackout and torch rally from 8:15pm to 8:30pm this evening.

[2:00pm] Updates by Blogger Tilak Pathak Two were injured while police fired ten rounds of rubber-bullet in Lake Side, Pokhara. Police have fired hundreds of rounds of fire to disperse the demonstrators who have succeeded in vandalizing Pokhara Municipality Ward No 3 Office.

In Kathmandu too, people have defied curfew orders and vandalized central offices of Nepal Sadbhawana Pary (Mandal) and Home Minister Kamal Thapa’s Rastriya Prajatantra Party. Demonstrations continued at Kirtipur, inner areas of Naya Bazar (where Pathak lives), Tinkune Koteswor and various parts of the nation.

In Butwal, people have controlled all government offices and overwritten all instances of ‘His Majesty’s Government’ with ‘Nepal Government’. Similarly, people have controlled all government offices in Janakpur and Bharatpur (Chitwan).

The demonstrations have been going on all the day at Kirtipur despite curfew orders.

[12:00 noon] In Butwal, Gopal Prasad Pandey, the central secretary of Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association, BR Ghimire (president of Rupendehi Journalists Association) and Karna Bahadur Karki (former central vice-president of Federation of Nepalese Journalists) were arrested early morning. In a rally organized to protest the arrests, 18 other journalists and three others were arrested.

Shiv Prasad Munakarmi, the president of TUTA appealed for the imeediate release of Pandey. “We demand immediate release,” he told UWB! on phone. “Otherwise, we will come out with a strong step.”

Tulsi Chhetri, a woman who sustained injuries in Saturday firing at Chitwan died this morning at Bharatpur Hospital.

[9:00am] – The state imposed a 13-hour curfew for today – from 7:00am to 8:00pm. The army and police had already taken their position early in the morning.

Bhimsen Dahal, who was killed yesterday in Pokhara, is from Kavre district – adjacent to Kathmandu Valley. The people of Nala, Dahal’s village, are demonstrating in Banepa today. Political parties have also planned a ‘condolance meeting’ at Banepa.

The state has denied curfew pass to Kantipur Publications and may be to other vibrant private media. The government wants to imtimidate media.

“the parliament had called for a vote of no confidence, instead of GP taking it he dissolved parliament and called for mid term polls.”
–So? What was wrong with it? It was a democratic election which brought UML to power,
“have seen all that could have been a lot better”
–True. That’s why you need to throw the Gunda ruler out first.
You deserv our gratitude for taking interest. But please don’t believe propaganda against parties spread by royalists.

    Hello King Gyanedra!
are you watching strike and curfew, are you aware about it? why are you killing people in this way?

Do you have any future in this way, your ROyal history going last very soon.

People, Layers, doctors, government staffs, journalists started fight against you, so you do care and aware about it.

st, it’s confirmed you are an idiot! Maoist’s don’t have a government to get rid off! They’re terrorists! I hate Maoists equally but to get rid of them one needs a totally different strategy, one your brain I am afraid can’t comprehend right now. Hey before you start babbling why don’t you do some research on how countries which have had problems like ours have successfully tackled them.

The internet, ahem.. is an excellent learning tool. Just google…(it’s a search engine and not an insult by the way.)

As I oppose the death penalty, I suggest that when the coming Republic of Nepal will be born, it will export its former king and family to our country (France), as we are used to accomodate former dictators from all over this planet : Baby Doc from Haïti, Bokassa from Central Africa and so on…

Another suggestion will be that there is a rather comfortable prison in Den Haag, Netherlands, were at least -and at last- those criminals will have a fair trial…

    Long live democraty !

    Kirat,

Many people hate the King as well, but that does’nt mean they support the parties either. The problem with many of you guys in this forum is the either this or that syndrome – If you dont support the parties then you are a King supporter and vice versa. Everything for us in 1990 was decided for us by the parties the judiciary and King Birendra, did any of us from the population have a say. Were any of us given questinnaires or even asked what the constitution should include, or at least they should have allowed the constitution to be open for progressive change and not written in stone.
Besides ticking a piece of paper and made to choose between a bad party and a worse one, do the rest of us have any chance of being truly involved in these political parties and their policies? How many beureucrats do you know who are independent from party affiliation? If you know a few, how many competent ones have done well in their careers? What are the chances for normal people to get a job in the governement without show of loyalty or pay off?
Just running around asking the King to get lost and burning tires and hurling bricks and getting innocent people shot in the process with false hopes is not my idea of democracy. The leaders are getting more cocky with the ungoing Maoist support, and have forgotten that they are also the part of the problem and not part of the solution. But, do they offer to step aside, even after the King’s rule is over?
We have ended up with a country divided, and it is definitely all our fault. But just as human rights should not be trial and error, I think democracy should exact the same standards, as the failure of it can result in more dire consequences.

    Kirat,
You dont need a government to oppose what you dont believe in . Besides, the Maoists claim they have a peoples government in place in most of the country side.
As for doing research, thanks for your internet browsing reference, but I prefer to read books. Let me recommend Imperial Grunts by Kaplan to you, it has some interesting work on the FARC of Columbia, the Al Queda and other such notable areas of Marxist insurgency like Peru,El Salvadore and Cambodia.

st, you give me the impression of someone who applies for the US DV lottery every year. Ready to escape from your own country because you feel you are to impotent to make a change. Well each to his own poison. Maybe you can apply for political asylum as a victim of the Maoists, the King and the SPA? That should do the trick!

    Kirat,
I’ve been to the U.S. several times for short visits and have had no intention of living and working there. I also noticed that from arguing the point you are resorting to attacking the individual (me). Not good signs if you want arguments to carry weight.
On the subject of googling and your apparent interest on the ways to tackle the insurgency, you could also read articles by Dr. Thomas Marks (an expert on this area and on the Maoists here). Go to http://www.nepaleyes.com for a sample or two of his writing.

Meanwhile if you’re really worried about the Maoists check this out :

It’s clear that you need a good government to overcome the Maoists problem which is the most serious problem our country faces. It’s also clear that the King’s government…going by the last 14 months is not a good government.

He’s had his chance, messed it up and now should step down gracefully instead of dragging this country to hell. He has the opportunity to do good…for the sake of his country and his people he should take this opportunity.

I have nothing to say here, every issue seems to have been debated upon. N yes my opinions have more chances of being labeled sb who does know politics rather than providing any insight..haha. A learning experience nevertheless. Comments like these sure keep increasin the no.of visitors here.
Don’t know who argued that we should all be out there but I agree. But look at me I am home, comfortably numb with whtever little options I have to engage my senses. So are hundreds. Everyone commenting here is stating we support democracy, but how much of political sense is required to propel us all into being involved in a political act? I think it is because of this defeaning silence of the so called aware ones the problem in Nepal is being aggravated. It is because the ones who see no way out through the so called protests by merely burning tires and hurling stones don’t come out and start a non-violent protest, unite hand in hand this chaos is only growing bigger. And I feel ashamed to be here merely typing as well…the dilemma of youth today..Wht to do? after knowing it all….

Whatever is being said in this blog, we all want a total democracy not a semi-democracy, taken away from us again and gain by the Kings. No matter how bad our politicians have been, we can’t give away our fundamental democratic right simply these corrupt leaders made mistake – we are al a part it, because we should have changed them when elections were held instead of letting them continue to ruin the country, and finally bringing this situation. Howerve, we cant throw away our democracy ‘vehicle’ or hand over to autocratic king becaue of bad ‘drivers’ or the bad leaders. So many lives have already have lost and many will be lost, as this king is pretty much set to wash Nepal with blood. Let support our friends who are in the streets, defying the curfew and getting beaten by the kings dogs. Let join the protest and bring back the democracy.

Where do idiots like st come from? Can’t you understand simple logic? Yes, we all hate the SPA for what they did, but at least in a democracy we have the means to oust those we disagree with.

And don’t start with violence. The Maoists resorted to violence for a reason. Now if you can’t understand why the Maoists used guns in the first place, you have no understanding of either modern history or the poverty of the countryside.

Once we kick Gyanendra out, we can go on to other business. But Gyanendra has no business staying in Nepal for one day more. He is the worst symbol of the past feudal structure.

Once we take care of Gyanendra, believe me,we can take care of Sujata Koirala, Prachanda, Madhav Nepal, Sher Bahadur Dumba and others.

    Dear friends,
Firstly, the people should eliminate the king because time and again this institution has betrayed people. Why should Nepali people has sacrifice their blood for the restoration of democracy? This is simple because royal institution is hungry with power and money every time. Therefore learning from the past eliminate the roayal institution, and go for constitutinal assembly. Thistime it is likely possible to acheive this goal as the people’s movement is backed by Maoist- a nationalist power of the country.

Why are you so thick-skinned and insensitive? or you have a psychological problem after the massacre of Birendra’s family? if you have a little love for Nepal (evenif not for Nepalese) give up the power and request a dialogue with civic society and political parties. You can minimise Nepal burn and Nepalese suffer, if you sacrifice in time. After royal massacre, you and your family can never regain the same royal image anymore. You are missing the point! Yes the SPA and their leaders are terrible – I don’t even want to get into how terrible and worthless I think they are.
The point my Royal lackey friend is that they were a DOMOCRATIC government. And there was a possibility for change … partly I feel we as Nepalese are somewhat apathetic and passive and we did not demand greater accountability from the political gang. Also of course the political leaders were worse then a much of wild monkeys. However, it doesn’t matter because they could be freely critisized and they could be voted out if we really wanted.
Unfortunetly things are not like in under an absolute Monarchy. I am not going to insult you further by trying to describe the merits of a democratic system. But if you want to argue for an autocrtic rule please say something more then 15 years of misrule.

Anyway st the point is that the King is doomed.
The institution of Monarchy which was so revered and mystical has lost all its appeal amongst the people. No longer will the instituion be seen as a crucial stablizing force in our society – Nepal is surely headed towards repulicanism.

We don’t think or write on that. We just babble out here about movement in the streets which has crippled the life of general people who have no concerns whatsoever with the movement.

    So, guys!!
Think about the lives we lost, the people who have been deprived of work and those who are dying of hunger because they cannot work. Our agitation movement has its costs. And we should count these things before we plan further movements.

I know many of you will write against me for points taken against the movement, but you guys are becoming psychos-obsessed with the words-protest and freedom but fail to see the importance of freedom of others.

No wonder when Thapa comes up with such a blatent lie. He is king’s cronie as Kirant pointed out only because he lies with ease and without regretes, once he gives up lying , king will no more ally him. His jhob is to lie and practice deceit. …so how can we expect him to be udisthar

There is no space for Thapa and King G like people in this democratic world. sddam was removed by US forces but my dear frens, we should realise our power. We are capable enough to replace these people by democratic leaders. King Gynendra can not kill people rampantly and People like Thapa who were discarded by people in Election should know that their days are coming.Thapa will be nageejhar in Tundikhel when Democracy bounces back on the track
Republic Nepal should be our Dream

WOuld you be kind enough to show me any instances in history where freedom has come about without struggle and suffering. I know I am not the one out there on the streets but nonetheless I support the people on the streets and feel grateful for their sacrifices.
If the Royal Regime is allowed to continue there is going to be more turmiol, death and destruction. The royal regime believes that they can solve the Maoist problem with the use of force – the innocent civilian deaths, torture, dissapearences etc. is enough to tell me that the SPA’s movement is the only way out. If you think there is another solution I would like nothing more then hear it.
