Will Nepal see reconciliation in the near future?
American Ambassador James F Moriarity has created a small-scale tsunami in Nepali politics by speaking against the 12-point agreement between Seven Party Alliance and the Maoists. (Ambassador will talk to Vijay Kumar this evening on Kantipur TV and we will post the full transcript of the interview here). Political parties are defending themselves and the government seems to be enjoying the latest ‘misunderstanding’ between the American diplomat and pro-democracy alliance. “Look, even American is saying that’s not good” is what government wants to say in a loud voice. But the most surprising statements come from the current and former army chiefs, especially the former Army Chief. Can you believe Satchhit Shumsher Rana talking about anything against arresting pro-democracy political leadership? That’s what he said yesterday in a discussion program.
He believes that a political solution to the existing crisis could not be achieved by putting political leaders behind bars. “Taking action against politicians is not a difficult thing but in politics this is not the only option,” he said according to the Kathmandu Post. Rana also claimed that if the parties were ready to forge an understanding with the king, the latter could give up the post of chairman of the Council of Ministers. “The king assumed power for three years but if the problem can be solved before that time, why should the country wait for three years.”
He also urged the parties to break their proximity with the rebels, and further claimed that the international community has gradually accepted the king’s agenda. However, Rana added, “Some foreigners have been attacking the monarchy, using Nepalis.” According to the same Post report, Rana said: “I don’t think the leaders will work in collusion with the Maoists,” claimed Rana, who had previously suggested treating the political parties at par with ‘Maoist terrorists’. “The parties should make the Maoists lay down their weapons.”
And the Royal Nepali Army Chief Pyar Jung Thapa is also talking about reconciliation. Lets listen to him: “Our history is testimony to the fact that all crises that have come across the nation since the unification of the Kingdom of Nepal have been resolved through the joint effort of the King, people and the Army”, Mr Thapa said, according to a RSS report published in the Post, and expressed the confidence that the challenges at present too could be faced with all the three forces coming together. He said that in a message Sunday on the occasion of Mahashivaratri and Army Day 2062 BS. Thapa has lauded the patience, courage, dedication and incomparable contribution of the RNA personnel in the interest of the nation and the people in the present state of crisis.

It is a mere face saving attempt of KG and RNA. In one of the recent interview by US Ambassador to BBC, i read he said whole coutryside is under rebel’s control. I am not too sure if any U turn is in sight. Any deviation from 12 pt understanding, I am almost sure rebels wile axe all the feudal elements in the country like in Cambodia. The best strategy for the country would be Constituent Assembly no matter nepali people have to strip the king from the thorne. Const Assembly is now in the best interest of the country for the country. Also look at the assertion of His Excellency Ambassdor that DC dont want to see the rebel’s victory in Nepal to be exported. Nepal is the only country where communism is towards victory in this 21st century. It has lot of implications in US. At any cost, USA seems to be determined to supress nepali rebels. On the other hand, Prachanda has set 5 year deadline for KG either excile or executed. This is something interesting to observe.
It is in the best interest of nation that King relinquest 95 percent of his power to People, and let rebels also come to the mainstream not under the constitution but under new constitution…
Prachanda must address issues(http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnepalinews.php?&nid=66634) raised by Deuba regarding their 12 points agreement with 7 parties as soon as possible to gain confidence of people.
deuba is just a rat in the present contest. i dont think rebels will give a damn to deuba.
Reconciliation is the only way. All parties are at fault and have to lock their heads together to get out of this mess. Trying to kick out one or the other will only bring more trouble. This premise is flawed heavily. It’s ike saying if you dont agree with each other – let’s not argue it out and try and convince one another and the people, but let’s just kill the competition.
Constituent assembly- For what? What are the criteria? As Deuba for a change correctly said we do not want anything absolute – whether it be monarchy or communism. The only absolute should be to chosse between one or another form of multiparty democracy. This can be achieved through our present constitution.
On the other hand in a constituent assembly election: Who are our voters? How fare is the voting going to be? How many voters understand democracy at all or are bothered (they are too busy trying to make a living)? How many would not vote? If an absolute system is voted in (say monarchy or Prachanda path) how long could this last at most before people realise that they are fed up with that too?. Too many questions not enough answers. First of all who gives the right to Prachanda or the party leaders or the King to determine an election to the constituent assembly? Should not the people vote on that first (i.e. whether to alter and refine the present constitution or go for a constituent assembly election)? After which again the people should decide what to include in the new constitution. For example, even if people decide to vote to go to vote for a constituent assembly election, they should then vote for the categories (Do we really think the overwhelming majority would want to include Absolute monarchy or Prachanda path on the list to vote on?). As you can see the complexities do not get easier but get harder. That is why the smoothe and faster alternative is sprucing up the present constitution. We really do not have time for any other fiasco.
Whatever the role of Deuba in present context, questions raised by him is relevant and answers to those questions from concerned person would lead to positive direction for all.
Can we say questions from Deuba is absolute in present context?
Hello Wagle brother, sorry to intrrupt!
I don’t know what is constituent assembly.
Can you give a detaled explanation?
Eveyrbody talks about it but i don know it.
Am i a stupid or there are many who have no idea on what the heck it is?
KG is NOT going to give up damn bit of power. No matter how much these spineless leaders make noise. Maoists are not winning; KG is not winning. The country will be in limbo for long before anything happens. That’s the reality.
The better title of this article should look like: Are the political parties readying themselves for suicide? What’s the point “reconcilling” with G. and his coteries??? It’s time to get rid of Gyanendra and Paras….
“I don’t know what is constituent assembly.
Can you give a detaled explanation?”
Ask your friendly neighbourhood Rajabadi. They wouldn’t hate it so much without knowing what it is.
Yes, reconcilation is the only way. It’s high time that political party leaders make decision whether they want to stay with India or they want to stay with Maoists or they just want to stay in the street chanting worthless NARABAJI. Just saying that the King needs to handover the power is useless. Political leaders should have clear cut goal for the benefit of the people of Nepal. If the King handover the power to one of the them will they be ready to patch up the differnces and help govern at least for two years in peace. Blaming the King will not help to resolve the ongoing situation in Nepal. Political leaders need to look in the mirror and explain the people their mistakes and how they are going to correct them. And yes, they need to go back to people for referendum on themselves. That means they have to earn respect from the people by standing in the election. Reinstatement of the dissolved parliament will not solve anything. It just shows that they are cowards who are afraid to stand up in front of the people.
let’s wait and see!
What I see here is that “no solution to Nepal”
I thought the 12 point agreement as a good answer but Deuba as ever although incapable in many sense takes advantage of the situation for his own advantage praising Uncle Sam. But my friend the whole problem for us is too much influence from others. I agree that friends are there for difficult time but good politics need analysis. What are we going to do? KG is a damn liar and good for nothing. Uncle Sam do not want maoist to come to power. Indians for sure are supporting everybody to make caos in Nepal although I do not understand what benefit they are getting. May be somebody can expalin.
For Prachanda and Baburam giving arms is like being dead. Unfortunately these fellows are greedy for living.
Deuba sir what the hell exactly you want for Nepal bringing controversy for the 12 point agreement. To tell you the truth you are the worst kind of leader for our country. I am sure without some truth you were not behind the bars. Do not fuel up for your own benefit. Greedy fellow.
The visible answer is constituent assembly. My understanding of constituent assembly is to look into the matter so that the person like KG cannot ruin the country. Currently this guy is the problem. Because of there is no light in the tunnel. Americans unfortunately are telling that among Prachand and KG they prefer KG. This makes the Nepal equation very difficult. In this stance I do not agree with Moriarty.
We do not need both KG and Prachand
really i don know. Mr. NAGARIK can you explain me instead, wagley seem to be angry with me. May be you are the right person.
