Maoist Leader Suresh Ale Magar On Woodland Incident

[Inside: Agitating Business Leaders Meet PM]

This is a brief phone interview with Suresh Ale Magar, a Maoist Member of Parliament. He was a founding member of the Federation of Indigenousness Nationalities and a lecture of English in Tribhuwan University for 17 years. About 3 years ago he was captured by Indian police and extradited to Nepal where he was imprisoned until his release after the April Movement.

All three images including this one are from today’s rally organized by Maoist affiliated workers in Kathmandu. All pics by Wagle

The District Secretary of Kaski told me that the CPN(M) is redefining the “Dictatorship of the Proletariat” to include multiple parties. He also said that for the time being the CPN (M) was in an alliance with the Mainstream parties in order to dictate over royalists, and later the dictatorship would include the bourgeoisie. Is this true? If so, what form does this dictatorship take?

Dictatorship is a relative term. In class society there is always a dictatorship of one class over another. Today, everywhere there is a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. Because we are following the ideology of Marxism Leninism Maoism we believe in the dictatorship of the proletariat. This is actually something that needs to be done to eliminate dictatorship altogether, because once there are no longer classes, there will no longer be dictatorship. Though we believe in this concept, we don’t want to impose it right now. There is no question of imposing it, because anything we do we must do in cooperation with the other 7 political parties.

The reason I ask is because it seems that you are in an alliance with the mainstream parties in order to dictate over royalists right now. This incident in the woodland hotel looks like an example of this. Now Maoists have denied involvement in that incident recently, so aside from the incident at the woodland hotel….

Who has denied involvement?

Well, it’s hard to tell from the papers. However, I have heard that Mahara has denied Maoist involvement. But, Hisila Yami and Lokendra Bista have accused the Hotel manager of being an exploiter. It also seems that the Maoists in general have said they are “taking action against the guilty.”

That man. He was a rapist. Female workers there told us he was raping them. He was exploiting the workers there as well. Even so, we have admitted that he shouldn’t have been beaten or taken action against in that way. It was actually not our party cadres, but our well wishers who took part in that action, and we have taken action against them.

So this isn’t the way you are dictating over royalists?

The royalists will not be allowed into politics, because they would not let anybody else into politics. How we keep them out depends upon the situation. If they want to do political activities again they will need to reform themselves.

There are many Maoist activities I have seen that could be classified as external to the rule of law. I saw a notorious man in lakeside have black smeared on his face, for instance. Where do Maoist ideology and the rule of law intersect?

These days we have strictly instructed our cadres to do only political activities.

What was the action taken against the people involved in the woodland hotel incident?

They were suspended from the organization they were in, and we have promised to help the government find them. Those people should be in the government’s custody within a couple of hours.

Business Leaders Meet Prime Minister
A day after they hampered normal lives in cities across Nepal by closing down their business and services agitating business leaders today met with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at the latter’s residence at Baluwatar and maintained that they will continue with the present indefinite strike until the eight parties- including the Maoists- hand in a written commitment to safeguard security for business enterprises. The delegates from the business community sought the PM’s attention regarding the failure to implement the repeated government assurances to ensure security for business enterprises. During the meet, PM Koirala stated that the government was committed to safeguard Nepalese industries and business community. According to chairman of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) Chandi Raj Dhakal, the prime minister had also assured the business entrepreneurs that their demands would be discussed during today’s meeting of the eight parties slated for this afternoon. (more)

Anti-Maoist strikes affect life: Kathmandu, March 20 – Agitating entrepreneurs today announced they would allow essential services like banking to operate normally, and vehicles to ply during the strike from Wednesday to minimize its impact on the general public. “We have exercised flexibility. Unlike in other strikes, we do not want to put the public in distress,” said Binod Chaudhary, president of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), speaking at a hurriedly-called press conference Tuesday evening. “Therefore, essential services like banking and transportation have been spared from the strike.” (more)

    This is a breaking-blog,Neil!

The Maoists should not forget that they too need to be responsible.

Mainstream politics is different from guirella war tactics.

They are to lose more than others if they do not change themselves into tolerant and responsible political animals.

The Internet blackout doesn’t bode good; the ISPs should be decent enough while protesting the extremism. Aren’t they resorting a form of extreme while doing so?

    Wagle,

Like I said, you’re post previously was pathetic, and now you want a white face to back you up thinking that the rest of us will say okay. Unfortunately you got the wrong white boy who is full of sh1t anyways. While my comment to you is in moderation, I will repeat it is about time the business community said ienough is enough. Now the brains will fight the brawns.

It seems that everytime the maoists do something deplorable it’s because of the royalist. We have seen too many lies from them. If Prachanda gets a stomach ache he’ll blame it on royalists. Where is his proof? Maybe he is a royalist himself by trying to delay the CA polls with all this nonsense.

I think the maoist better quickly drop the royalist line as an excuse, it is getting stale. I was at Basantapur yesterday and it was not only supported by industrialists, but small entrepreneurs, doctors, professionals, bankers, lawyers (including Shambhu Thapa who spoke on behalf of the lawyers association and he is a staunch republican), teachers, and even labour unions, welders association, airlines, hotels, restraunt association, the dalmot association (yes the dalmot association) and small store association and various women’s organistaion and more. I really don’t know the personal nature of Mr. Shretha but using violence does not justify anything, and calling him a crook and then trying to crook more money from him defeats the purpose completely. I have also spoken to maoist cadres who admit that their organisation has been infiltrated with thug elements (about 15% they claim), as their old school cadres do not resort to such measures but they have had problems with “thug types” who have joined their organisation as members. Probably true, but it does not help Mr. Gurung and Mahara denying that their cadres were involved when now it is proved they were, and whether they are thugs or not they are very much maoist party members who are active. Let’s face it even their member of parliament recently showed the thug nature in parliament recently, so who can say who is what? Time for the rule of law to prevail and anarchy to be discarded, otherwise we will all end up having our own security forces and courts to seek our own form of justice according to our own ideologies.

STORY OF the Ant & the Grasshopper

    OLD VERSION

The ant works hard in the scorching heat all summer building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant’s a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.
Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the cold.

    MODERN VERSION

The ant works hard in the scorching heat all summer, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant’s a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving and calls for a Nepal Bandh with “chakka Jaam” and lots of “tyre burning” to protest this ‘Soshan’.

Kantipur TV, Image TV and Nepal 1 TV show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. The nation is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be that this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so much?

The great Civil Society of Nepal steps in and stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house and a concerned group goes on a fast along with other grasshoppers demanding that grasshoppers be relocated to warmer climates during winter.

Amnesty International and Ban Ki Moon, the eighth Secretary General of the UN, criticizes the Nepal Government for not upholding the fundamental rights of the grasshopper.

The Internet is flooded with online petitions seeking support to the grasshopper many promising Heaven and Everlasting Peace for prompt support to poor grasshoppers.

Immediately laws are tabled to prevent Ants from working hard in the heat so as to bring about equality of poverty among ants and grasshoppers.

Finally, the Judicial Committee drafts the “Prevention of Terrorism Against Grasshoppers Act [POTAGA]”, with effect from the beginning of the winter.

The ant is fined for failing to comply with POTAGA and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Nepal Government and handed over to the grasshopper in a ceremony covered by all TV and media.

Everyone hails it as “a triumph of justice and revolutionary resurgence of the downtrodden”. Ban Ki Moon invites the grasshopper to address the UN General Assembly.

End of the story of great justice done to the Grasshopper.

I see only one viable way to deal with these Maoists. Take them out on the streets and shoot them in the head! Then bury them in mass graves! Starting with this former English lecturer.

    Neil,

I think the grasshopper in this case means the maoists. I think you are lost in translation like I said. Learn Nepali and you will learn to differentiate between the poor people of Nepal and the poor pretenders of Nepal – the maoists. What will it take for you to understand that your heroes the maos are not all that – a tianamen square like massacre of all class enemies? Or is this also maybe not the correct method but acceptable and along the lines of their doctrine?

I don’t understand why you guys are shooting the messanger. I am very glad and grateful for Neil’s work. It gives us an insight on just how these Maoists MoFos think. Like I said these goons are beyond negotiations. If only we had some political leadership we would resume fighting and finish off these thugs. I miss those days when these Maoists would run and hide when they saw RNA choppers.
But don’t get me wrong here though. I think the RNA (NA) made alot of terrible mistakes and their human rights record was dismal. What Nepal needs is a leader with a brain and some balls to make reforms to the NA and go after the Maoists and BLOW their fu*cking brains out!

According to media reports, Maoists severely beat up police sub-inspector Krishna Khanal of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) at the Police Headquarters at Khusibu Monday night.

Police said that a team from the CID had gone to Khusibu Town Planning in course of a search operation.

Maoists beat Khanal, who was returning to his office in his motorcycle in the charge of not taking permission before entering their area.

Locals brought him to the Bir Hospital when they found him unconscious on the road.

Similarly, owner of a camera shop in New Road also said that Maoists had threatened him in the charge of purchasing smuggled cameras.

Camera entrepreneur Ram Tandukar alleged that Maoists has taken him into control for nine hours and released after inflicting physical and mental torture.

In another incident, Maoists have issued life threat to Komal Bhattrai for giving information to media about Maoist’s attempt to abduct a person in Kalopul area of Kathmandu.

Bhattrai, who is a member of CPN-UML publicity department informed that two Maoists identifying themselves as Surya and Bikash threatened him by telephone.

These incidents occurred at a time when the business community of the country is protesting the Maoist’s excesses and demanding security.

    Bhayankar,

You can feed your lies to your brainwashed cadres. Do you think the majority of the pipulation believes that you have given up arms? Just having UN stickers on weapons and allowing your cadres to carry them does not mean laying it down. The bloodbath comarade seems to have already begun in the terai. The only people with arms buddy is you all and the army who have not used it for a while. This sort of arrogant pomp will be your downfall, and save the threats of using arms, because many are waiting for you to do it again so that people like the SPA will never make a mistake in trusting you all again.

Either you give up weapons totally or the rest of us will also have to arm ourselves for the final blood bath.

The culture of hate, killing, and indiscipline is so deep- this land of peace and harmony has been distrubed for many eons to come, and for what? For few lunatics who believe in kissing balls of India and seeing themselves as saviour of enlightment on political discourse and principle whereas majority die of hunger and deprivation of basic necessities and rights. So in the end, house built by foresight and fortitide of so many valiant Kings and principle actors who spilled their blood in the name of Nepal, shall perish as a nation which was let down by its own people in the cry for much bellowed but not understood Loktrantra. It is not easy but the fact is Nepali did fail Nepal.

Prachand has lost credibility in my mind. Everyday he talks of this and that conspiracy and never gives any proof.

Either he is afraid to share proof in which case he is not fit to fight for people of nepal. Or he has no proof then he is delibrately lying. A liar is a lair he will lie always. There comes credibiilty crisis. When they say they will make nepal switzerland in 5-10 years it is more likely to take it as lie.

Anyone who reads independent news and is not paid by maoists is soon going to lose credibility on maoists.

    Neil,
Thanks for update. Suresh Ale could not rise above petty Maoist rhetoric. He may have proofs but we can not accept his statements as gospels. The worst thing the Maoists have done here is that they first mishandled an old man and then they tried to justify their actions.

Hari Shrestha’s might have made mistake. But, Maoists do not have any right to play the role of both prosecutor and judge. Maoists have made mistake in this case and they can not justify their actions.

Regarding certain comments here, I find traces of xenophobia again Neil. No Nepali should ever ask any foreigner doing his job to leave Nepal. This is not prudent. Nor it is in keeping with our culture. We need to welcome foreigners who are helping us.

scoop, bhudai pundit and the rest of deluded feudalists, don’t forget that once upon a time the outdated ceremonial RNA did come after us and failed. What makes you think that if the war is resumed you guys will do better this time. In the past we had problems breaking into the security structure of Kathmandu, but now we are here also. Stop dreaming that RNA can kill us all. You guys want RNA to fight against us, sure sure just wait until next week when they will be saluting our comrades who will be ministers in the govt, and the next RNA chief will take oath of office from non other than our comrade Prachanda. What will you guys do then?

You guys also say that if not RNA then Nepali people will come after us. Wake up guys, only those who have nothing to lose fight. Others are just cyber warrior like you guys for which we don’t need a PLA. Comrade Bhayankar alone is enough for you feudalists. Anyways, coming back to the point, we have the support of the rural people, the ‘Nepali people’ that you saw in Kathmandu in April were most our cadres so yeah if you mean that you will protest by posting hundred posts in this blog then I understand otherwise just a bunch of leftover feudalists cannot stop this wave of communism taking over Nepal.
