With the restoration of democracy in April, the likes of Shekhar Gurung went on hiding from public eyes. Not anymore. The agents of regression have made a comeback. Thanks to the pro-democratic, pro-republican Janajatis who provided him a forum today by organizing Nepal Banda, the general strike.

I was shocked to see that the person who was demanding my identity was no other than Shekhar Gurung.” Shekhar Gurung inspected Thapa’s ID and told, “Ok, You are from the press. Go.”
I always thought royalists had infiltrated into the agitation in Terai and other parts,” Thapa said. “Today’s incident was yet another solid proof about the royalist involvement in destabilizing the democratic government. This is also a matter of shame for the organizers of today’s Banda that people like Shaker Gurung were openly active in the name of Janajati demands.”
Banda Update: Normal life across nation has been affected today due to Nepal Banda (shutdown) called by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NFIN) to pressurise the government to fulfill its 24-point demands. The bandh was organised demanding ethnic autonomy, federal system, linguistic freedom, proportional representation in the constituent assembly and guarantee of self determination, among others. NFIN, which held talks with the government on 26 Feb, refused to withdraw the bandh despite government requests. NFIN is scheduled to hold the second round of talks on Friday (2 March). (more here)

Koirala Health: “Has [Prime Minister] Girija [Prasad Koirala] died?” SMS with these words have been circulating among mobile users in Kathmandu since yesterday and people were tuning in to radios to be sure about the PM’s health situation. We heard that a foreign ambassador contacted to a foreign news agency’s Kathmandu office regarding the news compelling the reporters to make a call to family members of Koirala. “He is absolutely fine now and has shown a lot of signals of improvement,” the family source told a reporter. Then there was one minister who went on public to tell the public latest about Koirala. “I have just now met with him and he appeared fine,” Ramesh Lekhak was heard saying that in Radio Nepal today.
Prime Minister Concerned: Koirala is okay and he is concerned about Maoist arms, says a report. The Prime Minister, during his discussion with the government talks team with the Maoists, today expressed concern over the vast differences between the number of Maoist combatants and the arms registered. Koirala directed the team to make arrangements to declare the arms of the Maoists not registered with the UN as illegal. The UN had registered 30,852 Maoist PLA members and 3,428 arms.

I guess the level of comments seen is the true picture of Nepal- it has no bearing nor the direction. The deadend is approaching and everyone is for themselves at the price of a nation. So just get armed and ready, the hell is about to set loose.
If the powers that are cannot amicably reach a solution soon, I think the likes of UWB and all other media better stop putting out philosophical and long drawn out views on the one hand and reactionary material on the other, and start placing views that are practical for now. What do we have to do, if things turn nasty? What can we do as citizens not belonging to this side or that, but belong to the land because we are natives? I as an individual can give you endless theories, but practically I am helpless if the streets rule and the law is nothing. What is the plan of action? It basically comes down to mutual respect for ideas, and the ability to allow people to live and work freely in any corner of this nation no matter who they are. I also am not unrealistic to think that prejudices will not be there, we are only human after all and as far as I know prejudices whether it be towards someone who looks different, speaks different or is of the opposite sex will always be in our nature. After all why do we appreciate beauty and not ugliness of the physical? That itself is natural and human and need I say it prejudiced. However, with or without these prejudices we have to create a mutually repectful society under the law at least. Even when at present with so much of technical progress, Himalayas are sparsely population and they happen to be Sherpas. And my guess is that Sherpas are not Kirats and culturally different. Sherpas trace their ancestry to Tibet. They are Buddhists and Kirats are not.

During the reign of the Kirat kings not only was the area around Brahmaputra supposed to be a part of their geo-politcal map but also large swathes of present day Tibet (past the Himalayas!) and North India.
I have always argued against the Hindusization of Kirats…this is a common Hindu characteristic( note how the Mother Goddess concept from the Harrapans of the Indus Valley were adopted into prominence by the Indo-Aryans that came in from Persia). Note also the theory that modern day South Indians are widely held to be the descendants of the Harrapans (a civilzation that flourised in what is today modern day Pakistan!).
You talk about oppression as if it was a passing thing like adolescence. When you do that you use the brain of one. How well would Bahuns brought up in their Vedic traditions do if they were to suddenly switch to a Swahili medium of communication and culture? Struggle a bit I am sure. People say that the Maoists insurgency has resulted in more than 13000 deaths(inflicted by both the State and the Maoists) …and that is sad, but during the same period with their (Indians) North East always in a state of war, along with Kashmir, the Hindu-Muslim thing, their own Maoist problems, the casteist thing etc, etc, etc ad infinitum ad nauseum, during the same period various such conflicts must have led to a casualty of at least 130,000. But from the outcry raised in their own country so far one thing is clear…life is cheaper there.
I hope they do. But it didn’t stop them from intervening in Lanka and Maldives. Don’t you guys are asking same thing from them? I hope you don’t.
pawan-the thing is that this janjati-madeshi-bahun-thakuri thing has never been addressed properly. it’s always been suppressed. it is finally being discussed…surely there will be hotheads in all sides who will veer off into abuse in this blog and unfortunate violence in real life..but hey once we get over this problem then we can concentrate on how to improve all of our lives…and I belive we will get over it and move ahead. The concept of Indo-Aryan tribe is little bit vague. You see people of Persia and people as we know them as Aryan are different. The term Indo-Iranian and Indo-European is more accurate. Persians worship Ahura (????), yes that’s Asura (????). See Persian language has no ‘?’ letter; they spell it ‘?’. You know they pronounce Sindh as Hind right. And their religion portrait Indra has evil person. While Indo-European, the true Aryan, around present day’s Punjab worship Indra. And you know what they mean by Asura. So it would be wrong to say that Aryan were from Persia. It is widely believed that Persian (Parthian,Pathan?), Kushan, Khas, Khamboj (Chimmerian, Ghimmerian?) tribes belong to Indo-Iranians who used to worship Asura/Ahura.

Even maoist seems to shy away from the issue. So what is the solution? Yours side keep fighting for it and their side keep ignoring it forever?
