With the restoration of democracy in April, the likes of Shekhar Gurung went on hiding from public eyes. Not anymore. The agents of regression have made a comeback. Thanks to the pro-democratic, pro-republican Janajatis who provided him a forum today by organizing Nepal Banda, the general strike.
“I was coming to office this afternoon,” said Hari Bahadur Thapa, chief reporter at Kantipur daily. “Some people stopped me near Kupandole and one of them asked for my [press] identity card. I was shocked to see that the person who was demanding my identity was no other than Shekhar Gurung.” Shekhar Gurung inspected Thapa’s ID and told, “Ok, You are from the press. Go.”
I always thought royalists had infiltrated into the agitation in Terai and other parts,” Thapa said. “Today’s incident was yet another solid proof about the royalist involvement in destabilizing the democratic government. This is also a matter of shame for the organizers of today’s Banda that people like Shaker Gurung were openly active in the name of Janajati demands.”
Banda Update: Normal life across nation has been affected today due to Nepal Banda (shutdown) called by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NFIN) to pressurise the government to fulfill its 24-point demands. The bandh was organised demanding ethnic autonomy, federal system, linguistic freedom, proportional representation in the constituent assembly and guarantee of self determination, among others. NFIN, which held talks with the government on 26 Feb, refused to withdraw the bandh despite government requests. NFIN is scheduled to hold the second round of talks on Friday (2 March). (more here)

Koirala Health: “Has [Prime Minister] Girija [Prasad Koirala] died?” SMS with these words have been circulating among mobile users in Kathmandu since yesterday and people were tuning in to radios to be sure about the PM’s health situation. We heard that a foreign ambassador contacted to a foreign news agency’s Kathmandu office regarding the news compelling the reporters to make a call to family members of Koirala. “He is absolutely fine now and has shown a lot of signals of improvement,” the family source told a reporter. Then there was one minister who went on public to tell the public latest about Koirala. “I have just now met with him and he appeared fine,” Ramesh Lekhak was heard saying that in Radio Nepal today.
Prime Minister Concerned: Koirala is okay and he is concerned about Maoist arms, says a report. The Prime Minister, during his discussion with the government talks team with the Maoists, today expressed concern over the vast differences between the number of Maoist combatants and the arms registered. Koirala directed the team to make arrangements to declare the arms of the Maoists not registered with the UN as illegal. The UN had registered 30,852 Maoist PLA members and 3,428 arms.

AGAIN, this is what I don’t get. You are saying the state structure or apparatus does not allow changes so that no REAL change can be made from inside. And so because you are not in the mainstream YET. OK. Now, that’s different from demanding autonomy from the central government. Agreed. However, if you will, what do you say to the fact that, generally – not geared towards you specifically, if Janjatis rallied for proportionate representation in the government as THE PRIMARY CAUSE under the unitary model rather than an auxillary cause for autonomy, rationale of equality would be more visible to MY kind?

Anyway coming to a conclusion I think it is the duty of all Nepalis to make the country as inclusive as possible for all the people who live here. How easy for a pahade to dismiss the grievances of a madeshi or for a bahun that of a janjati or vice versa. As long as people remain discriminated for their ethnicity or culture there will always be instability in this country-ofcourse there never is such a thing as a perfect system that pleases all-but I think it is abudantly clear that the present state structure and constitution needs a lot of changing to make things more inclusive and equitable for all. We missed an opportunity to do this in the 1990s. We have an opportunity right now.
Janjatis and Madeshis have made a lot of demands-some are genuine and good for the country as a whole as it will make the country more inclusive and stable. Some of the demands are unrealistic and even potentially harmful for the country as a unified nation state. We all know what the good ones are we all know what the potentially bad ones are. Its pretty simple and does not require the wisdom of Solomon or the genuius of an Einstein. All this SPAM govt. has to do is grant the genuine demands and refuse the bad ones. Once the good ones are accepted you will see that only the extremist elements will remain. These can be dealt with quite easily. But the SPAM are mortified because even granting the genuine demands of the Janjatis and Madeshis will result in a sea change and a displacement in power for many.

You are sore that “Your ilk oppressed us for centuries and sold us off to the
Brits…” and you are proud that your kind had sustained economy by sending money from abroad. I have never seen anyone proud when s/he is sold and money earned from so-called bondage. I suspect it must be ‘janjati’ way of presenting ‘superior’ logic.
What ‘oppression’ are you pointing at? Perhaps you are hinting at government jobs. The story goes like this. When there is time to study in school, its your kind who prepares itself for the British Army job by doing lots of physical training rather than studying. It comes natural because your forefathers had done the same and you follow the family tradition. When these recruiting camps come, your kind are the first ones to apply. When your kind fails to qualify for these jobs, they go for Indian Army jobs. Now don’t be a sorry loser to say that you don’t study in school, you don’t qualify for those jobs, and still you should be offered top jobs everywhere. Instead of British Army or Indian Army, why did not your kind apply for the Nepal Army or Nepal Police; or what has stopped you? You obviously claim that you labored hard to be in the British Army that is why your kind is chosen. In the same manner, Brahmins and Chettris claim that they labored during their educational career to get government jobs. When it comes to your kind, its ability; and when you don’t get it, its oppression. You complain of Rana/Shah discrimination because you do not become Army Chief or break ‘glass ceiling’. Do your foreign masters allow you to be Army Chiefs or even pass beyond Major? Last time I heard that GESCO went to court in UK because Nepalese were discriminated in terms of pay and retirement benefits.
In politics, every single political party turns out to be representative of all
communities, caste and creed. Your ‘janjati’ bro Subash Newang (UML) is the Speaker of the House. Has anyone protested about it? Your ‘madhesi’ sister Chitra Lekha Yadav (NC-D) is the Deputy Speaker. Has anyone protested against her appointment? Look at your own organizations that promote the communal hatred and boogey of ‘oppression’. You claim it is demanding of your rights. Even a chor can provide a reason that he steals for his living and living is his fundamental right. There are 58 groups of’janjatis’in Nepal. is your organization representative of those communities? Why there are only Gurungs or Limbus or Rais dominating these organizations? What gives you right to represent those people when they are not part of your organization? Why does not Chepang, Lepcha, Kusunda, Jirel, Dhanuk, Meche, Lhopa, Larke, Dura or Satar find representation in your ‘janjati’ organizations? Why not Chepang Autonomous Region or Lhopa Autonomous Region? Why not people from these communities are made general secretary or president in your organizations? And Why should these communities follow your lead? Is it because you are educated, speak English, and based in Kathmandu where these media cover your brave words? Why does not your fellow brothers Sadbhavana Party or MJF that claim to represent Terai as a whole does not
have communites like Mushar, Kumal, Majhi, Raute, Jhangad, Tajpuria, Dom? And you have audacity to talk about oppression and exclusion… You are pathetic, self-serving individual, with drastically narrow mindset.
