Welcome to the secular Nepal where being Nepali is the true religion. Now extremists should stop politicizing religion.
By Deepak Adhikari
Nepal became another secular state at a time when fundamentalism is growing in different parts of the planet. But, this oldest nation state of South Asia has a history of harmony that is rarely found in the world. Christians in neighboring India decode Brown’s Da Vinci Code as blasphemous. Srilanka is ravaged by communal violence. Minority Hindus and Christians are suppressed in Pakistan. But Nepal has remain a safe haven for people of different faiths.
Professor Lokraj Baral writes in his book Rajtantra Ki Loktantra (Monarchy or Democracy?): “The foundation of Nepali state was on the basis of four castes and 36 colors as propounded by late Prithvi Narayan Shah. This made the monarchy very rigid as a source of power. The constitution of 2015 (1959), however, was secular. But, that too mentioned king as Hindu. After the coup by king Mahendra in 2017, the systematic discrimination on the basis of religion began.” (article continues after the box)
I am a Hindu BUT…
By Dinesh Wagle
In my recent trip to the United States, I faced one question that I found quite difficult to answer in a single word. “What’s your religion?” was one question people would ask me at one point of the conversation. But I never asked them what their religion was. “I am a Hindu,” I used to reply but not without adding a few words to explain the answer. “BUT only when it comes at filling out forms.” Then I tried to tell the questioner what I had written in my personal web site nearly four years ago under the title “Belief in the God“:I follow Hindu traditions because I was born and raised in a family which considers Hindu as the religion, tradition and the culture. I am more than a liberal when it comes to religion. I equally respect other religions and think there is only one God. Yes, be it Christ or Shiva; Vishnu or Buddha or Muhammad.
What I think is respecting other’s religion is a RELIGION itself. Secularism is a way of respecting each other’s religion. Every individual has right to practice religion of his/her choice. And the state shouldn’t give priority to one religion over the other. Religion and politics should be kept separate. Religions shouldn’t dictate politics. The difference between India and Nepal is that we have comparatively tolerant religious tradition. Our Hindus and Muslims or Christians are more assimilated with each other than people with different faith in other countries.
There is a big hue and cry over the recent Parliament Proclamation that declared Nepal a secular state. There is no more the ‘world’s only Hindu kingdom’ title before or after Nepal. This is indeed a good decision because many people in the country were fighting for religious equality in Nepal. Majority of people in Nepal are traditionally Hindu and this situation will remain for centuries to come. There is no reason to relate the threat to Hindu religion to the declaration of secularism. Nepal is very different from other countries of the world because we haven’t have religions problems. We have now the challenge to contain those religious fundamentalists who are trying to fish in the dirty water by raising the voices like making Nepal a secular state is equal to pushing the Hindu religions to the edge.
The continuation of Nepal as Hindu kingdom is redundant now. To emphasize one religion means to minimize others. Hindu religion doesn’t preach disrespect to other religion, but teaches not to discriminate any one on the basis of religion. If to be Hindu is a matter of pride, other religious groups or even the atheists should be equally respected. To do so, the state should not be aligned to any religion. State should be devoid of religion. Rather, it should be directed by the politics of people’s aspirations.
Nepal has a history of people adhering to multiple faiths living in harmony. Our own lifestyles and cultural behavior define us as Nepalis. Thus, to be Nepali in itself is a religion. Moreover, ours is a country where a plethora of class, caste, languages working together making it one of few diverse countries in the world. Loktantra or full-fledged democracy is a system that encompasses the minorities. In loktantric system, a state that adopts a religion hurting a minority is unconceivable.
Though Hindu religion as such doesn’t advocate caste division. But, the practitioners used it as a tool to suppress so-called lowly caste. We should condemn such discriminations that are played citing religious scriptures. The newfound secularism has sent a positive message among minorities in Nepal. But, this part of the world has shown an example of religious tolerance even in the turbulent times.

Entrance to Pasupati is done through racial profiling rather than from a religious perspective. If one looks Nepali or Indian in spite of the fact that they migh or might not be Hindu, they are granted persmission to enter. However, Indonesian Hindus were not permitted to enter couple of years ago.
Above all, what an archaic system that requires Bhattas from South India to be the priests of Pasupati? This gives them a monopoly. If all human beings are equal and Nepalis are no less than Indians, why cannot a Nepali be a priest of that temple regardless of their background provided they have proper education and training.
Pasupati is a very rich temple but its donations and funds have been misutilized. The temple complex should be able to be self-sustainable and aid the poor and needy in its surroundings. There is no accounting and transparency in its dealings.
All you people who believe Nepal is better of being a “Hindu” nation, this is for you –
I think you people are nothing but a bunch of insecure cowards who have been born into a religion that gave you a self-conceived right to opress others. Many of you say things were ok when Nepal was a Hindu kingdom. How can you validate that? Just because you were a Hindu and in an advantageous position, things were ok for YOU. Nepal has always been religiously marginalised. There is no concept of a strong social fabric in Nepal. There are divisions even among same religion and same caste. There is still concept of untouchability and preference in everything is greatly influenced by religion, caste etc.
All the above have been perpretrated by Hindus. Like someone rightly said, the State promoted the religion only to make things more feudalistic and aristocratic. All these protesters, the VHP and Hindu organisations are fake. Burning tyres and shouting slogans are not going to change anything. They need to understand if they want a truly progressive Nepal, then there must be equality in religion and right to faith.
Secularism is here to stay. All those who oppose it will be swept away by the tide of time. It is the 21st century. Wake up or be perished.
Bridohi,
Very well said. Why bhattas from India not a Nepalese priest.
In this context I would like to add my experience again from Indonesia. I was travelling with very high muslim clerics from East Java to Madura island, which is alomost 100% muslim. Knowing that I am a hindu by religion and as a respect that I would not be eating beef, the clerics made sure that I am not served with any food containing beef rather than me avoiiding. This is the kind of respect that we have to develop not that Nepal is secular and therefore we all have the right to do anything we want. My definition of secularism is the respect that we can show to the others not the otherway around.
there are and were many reason to declare Nepal a secular state.
– One of the main demands of the Maobadis
– the hindu upperclasses with the priests and
the king made the rules which marginalised the lower castes and outcastes.
– a hindu kingdom is an anachronism, young people all over the world are not following the religious leaders, in a country where more than 50% of the population is below 20 years,
the old generation looses its respect, its domination and its credibility. Religion is considered old fashioned, conservativ and preventing progress, development and democracy.
Laxmi,
I agree with your reasonings but for me religion is way of life, happiness, peace not old fashioned, conservative and preventing progress, development and democracy.
The issue is fanatism, religious corruption, superiority complex of those who preach or using the religious platform for personal benifit.
Well educated Nepalese is the answer.
Sparsha, of course religion is OK, but the human factor just spoils it everywhere, be it in Hinduism, Christinaty, Islam, Jewish, etc, the leaders are exploiting the people.
Everybody should know when he is doing right or wrong, it is so easy, well educated people do not need leaders and priests to kneel down and give bakhsis or make pooja.
Religion is not the problem it is the people who practice it that are the problem. Hinduism originally never had a caste system and women were treated equally. Guess who brought in a rigid caste system? Guess who brought in the concept of varna and purity of the so called upper castes? Guess who decreed that men were superior to women? The very people who were supposed to practice and uphold Hinduism corrupted it to further their own selfish interests. That is what I see once again happening in Nepal. The same people who claim to be true Hindus are bent on giving it a bad name. Hinduism always tolerated and respected other relgions-this religion is more than 3000 yrs old. Now because a country like Nepal which is less than 300 years old has decided to be secular, some Hindus seem to feel that Hinduism is under threat! What a bunch of jokers! Please Hinduism is much bigger than you or Nepal-give it the proper respect it deserves by practising Hinduism as it should be. Don’t equate this great religion to the smallness of your mind.
Kirat,
Well said.
I will add that real secularism is practicing Hinduism in real sense
If somebody says Hindu, Buddha, Muslim are religion then he is a fool.
“Paropakar Paramo Dharma” That’s all
The Protest along southern border is proboked by India, mainly BJP leaders speech. King may be playing alos a vital role to oppose this, because he was enjoying as a Hindu King i.e. Narayan ko avatar till now. God damn fool
What a shame that most people are against the religion !! Be aware ! IF you undermine hinduism , Islam or christianity will invade your country.
The problem right now is of untouchability which must be cured. Killing the only Hindu country is not going to solve this problem. And who the hell those Netas are to decide about the religion when that could be decided in upcoming CA. I doubt there will emerge a new BJP in Nepal and that party will win by 2/3rd.After all the hinduism is in our blood. What if we are allowed only one day leave for dashain ? When there are so many Islamic and Christian country what harm a hindu country would do. As I said earlier the problem is untouchability and not the religion.
That Nepal is a “Hindu” country is one of the world’s bigger jokes. There is no “Hindu” religion. By Hinduism, we mean a diverse set of practises. Yes, most Hindus have a few common beliefs, but that’s that.
And India, which has 95% of the world’s Hindus is a secular country and has been for 60 some years. This whole idea of Nepal being a “Hindu” country is so romantic.
For starters, you guys who harp so much about “Hinduism”, define to me what it is. You won’t be able to. And I hear there are Shiv Sena activists in Nepal. Where did those come from? Catch them, whack them across their bottoms hard with a pole and send them screaming across the border.
I totally agree with Roshan, if SPA believes in democracy and people then they should do the refrendum for such a big issue.
Whatever you [icd] say, the decision to remove “Hindu Adhirajya” was bad. The SPA leaders just cheated the people.
That’s all.
Hey,
Don’t be in dilemma that all Janajatis support so called secularists. I am a Magar by birth and our family is a hindu family ever since. I will be happy even to die for hindu pride that I hold from generations.
Looks like next Jana Andolan will be between Secularists and Hinduism-followers!
Another revolution around the corner…Coming to the streets near you!
Sweed Weed, I don’t think so. Hopefully not. You can see that we non-Hindus are not really bothered-we don’t want violence in the name of religion, anybodys religion.
Frankly I don’t understand why people have made such a big fuss over this issue and wasted their time! Even after Nepal becomes a secular state you people really think things are going to change????? You fools! Are you telling me that in Chistian and Islamic countries there is no marginalization and oppression?? Religion had very little to do with where Nepal is! Even when Nepal was a “Hindu” kingdom what was so Hindu about it?? People could practice any religion they wanted, they could freely convert to any other religion, they were not discriminated for government jobs (like some Muslim countries) etc. The main issue was that the Kings and the political leaders never had economic development on their agenda. If there was economic development issues like caste discrimination would have sorted itself out because once people become educated they are able to see through all the BS! The Kings and political leaders didn’t bother to develop Nepal not because of religious idealogy but because they were greedy!
Now that Nepal is secular some people seem to be under the impression that this will solve Nepal’s problems! I would say think again!
We are a hindu state not by chance, we were and we will remain a hindu state? Hinduism is not a religion, but a way of life. Hinduism and Buddhism are dharmic religions, not Abrahamic like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Hinduism evolves, rather than reloving upon a book of millenia old doctrines. Hinduism questions, not command. Hinduism seeks enlightenment not endowment. The Abrahamists want people to follow, in Dharmism you are asked to lead. We say debate, but Abrahmist call that doubt. We try to assimilate through diversification they prefer singular unification. They have fundamental value, we prefer universal values. Change Nepal and I guarantee it will change, but you wont like it.
My brother-in-law is a Newar Budhhist. I’m a Advaita Vedanta hindu. I have vaishnavs, shaivist, and shaktists in my family. My friends are hindus and buddhist. We never thought about about this untill Nepal was declared a secular state. Some are thinking how to react. To every reaction there is an equal but opposite reaction. Opposite!
Yeah and the fate of Hinduism depends on a little country called Nepal. Makes sense.
A sudden or momentous change in a situation, or, a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form? Choose wisely!
i totally agree with thule ……….why r we against the religion.. as thule told if we undermine hinduism , Islam or christianity will invade your country. and we have great history of our hinduism and religious tolerance……..first of all the problem of untouchablity should be cured than only the concept of secularism should be considered……k india ma religious riots hudaina ra? ra nepal hindu rajya huda pani k riot bhako thiyo ra? yes bare ma sochau? aba jaha samma lagcha nepal ma religious riot huncha hola…………ra hindu rastra hunnu ma k kharabi thiyo ra secular rastra baye paschi k sudhar huncha ta?plz malai khoi bhannos hai!!!!!!!!!!!ma euta hindu ra malai yes ma garva cha

Read whats written not what you want to be written. Your presumed hypothesis of my writing is baseless to say the least.
Hinduism according to some is a way of life, a culture, a social order, something that brings a pattern to society, a code of behaviour right? Well if this is true it is no big wonder that a lot of people will object to the social order, pattern and way of life being changed. Change- eveyone wants to resist it-especially those benefiting from the status quo.
Once again, read whats written. Change is necessary, but through evolution not revolution.
“A sudden or momentous change in a situation, or, a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form? Choose wisely!”
Yeah, change at a pace you are comfortable with? That’s right. What some people want is another 1000 years of the same social order that benefit them at others expense. Suitable pace of change right?
Evolution not revolution-that’s my thego. The Devil will quote the scriptures to argue his case.
I agree with culrutes point of view. Nepal needs to carefully move forward instead of jumping into new dillema and creating tension where there was religious harmony. Now i am more scared of hindu fanatics getting support which before “we did not think” about supporting them.
Rakesh-so we appease the Hindu fanatics then huh? The arguments get more and more logical! Like that Prime Minister of Great Britain-Chamberlain-who thought it was a great idea to appease Hitler.
Comfortable, your damn right for the first time. Comfortable speed to analyse all the problem, because don’t take me wrong, i supported the Janandolan, but not secularism of Nepal. Change is tricky and has to be well administered. There is not a single state which has survided the true ethos of a revolution and has to finally accept the process of evolution. It is a scientific fact unless you have a better theory to put forward that challenges Darwin, or even Engels and Marx, their Manifesto was a evolutionary socialism not revolutionary communism. Kirat you need to get your point more factual and accurate, unless you are just trying to sway the debate on the side you prefer beneficial to you, the same think you have accused many of doing. Oh! Please read this post properly and entirely before commenting prematurely.
Hinduism is being targetted and penalised for its being tolerant and non-violent. It has always been misused by the rulers and leaders.
People forget that it is Hindusim that has protected the different ethnic communities and practices for the last ten thousand years. Otherwise they would have been demolished from the face of the earth long long back. Why aren’t there ethnic communities in all Christian countries? why are there no ethnic diversity in Muslim countries?
Christians will knock at your door every single day preaching Bible to you until you give up your faith and acce[pt jesus. Muslims do not do that. They have a new strategy, they just pick up your daughter and sister and have muslim children from them. Look at Pakistan, what they do to Hindu girls.
the declaration of
Now, with the BROAD MINDED suicidal secularism,
Culture-oh, we are bringing Marx and Engels into it now? Great! Now you are talking about Nepal becoming a secular state in the same breath as the French or Russian revolution? Only for the fanatics my man.
Yeah, comfort for you but discomfort for the others-but what do you care right? It’s got to be at your pace.
La maile ke bhanya yasle ke comment hanchha. Maile appease haina bhanya, nepal lai secular banayo bhani thini haru lai manche le bhau dinchan, hindu huda kheri koile pani bhau didaina the. Democracy haina, la garum na democratic way. Raja ko lai pani vote, mantri ko lai pani vote, Ra Dharma ko lai pani vote.
It is pointless, you don’t argue you just write whatever. Seriously. By the way if read history well the french revolution was not a true revolution. The only true revolution were the Russian and American one. The americans chose to “appease” their constituents and slowly evolve their laws. It return America entered secularism more gradually and properly. Russia just bombed. “Fanatic” what the hell!!!, ecolution!!! that what i supported, how do you justify a evolutionary point of view as a fanatic. Seriously get some common sense, because i welcome a other point of view but not a pointless blurt.
“NEPAL IS A CONVERSION FACTORY”
All ethnic cultures will be completely demolished, and nepal will enter a new era of RELIGIOUS WAR.”
Our fundamentalist brothers are at the centre of Ghantaghar, and their competitors are at Jawalakhel.
Nepali brothers and sisters, on whose side will you fight?
YOU WON’T HAVE TO Wait long SEE NEPAL A “conversion factory”, and the result is RELIGIOUS WAR, like secular India.
And the first victims are our ethnic minorities, who live in poverty and lack of education.
Congratulations our intelligent Nepali people and our intelligent leaders!!!!! For registering Nepal in the ongoing “World Religious Violence” by replacing Hinduism with Secualarism.
Good Job destroying Nepal!!!!!!!!!!!!
The French Revolution was not a true revolution? Huh? Pointless blurt? Look who is talking! I guess you never heard of the Napoloenic code and how this code ushered in the era of modern Europe huh? Do you know that most of the Napoleonic codes are still law in most democracies today? Well I guess I am just arguing for arguments sake and only you have a valid point.
MISSION:
Nepali people, now choose one from the following and sharpen your sword to fight against the other you did not choose;
A Christian fundamentalist is the one who beleives only on
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20 AND THIS IS THEIR MISSION.
A Muslim fundamentalist is the one who is in his mission to convert the whole earth into Islam and is ready on his Jihad to blow himself up in this course until the last one is converted into Muslim
A Hindu fundamentalist is the one who RESISTS these ideologies, and wants to protect his culture. The moderate fundamentalists try to protect their family from conversion, and extremists may resort to ethnic violence in course of this resistence. But the goal is RESISTENCE against the CONVERSION. And nothing beyond that.
Hinduism promotes diversity and discourages UNIFORMITY on IDEOLOGICAL AND PRACTICAL GROUNDS.
THIS IS A GRAVE MISTAKE; NEPAL SHOULD BE DECLARED A HINDU REPUBLIC otherwise, like in many other countries, nepal will be colored in human blood. It will be another Israel.
Hinduism like most religions is also a code of social behaviour(besides being other things). Relgion and culture is entertwined so it creates a list of do’s and don’ts, a hierarchy in society (caste and classes) i.e. a social order. Thus you have upper castes/classes and lower castes/classes and people who don’t fall into any of these brackets and so are called outcastes (non-believers/kafirs/godless people/foreigners in other religions/cultures).
Now this social order favours some but discriminates against the majority (you can’t favour everyone!). This favouritism can be done subtly or explicitly. The more subtle it is the more difficult it is to detect. When this social order is changed naturally those who were/are benefitting from the status quo will naturally oppose it.
Ofcourse then there are those idiots who just can’t accept the idea of change even if it will benefit them in the end.
Kirat or should i now call you Kidiot. “Edits” “Napoleonic codes” and Emperor Napoleon. “Emperor” i guess that defeats the point of a revolution to take out the monarchy and Napoleon was not the one who conducted the revolution and only landed in the post due to the enormous bloodshed caused by the revolution and the insuing instability. Lets not the forget Robespierre’s Reign of terror. Historically and you should really check the books properly, Napoleon ended the revolution when he came to power in 1799 the same day the revolution and all its itricacies ended.
The proclamation to convert nepal into Secularism MUST BE TAKEN BACK, Nepal must be declared a HINDU REPUBLIC.

Oh and by the way some more about Napoleon.
According to “Langewiesche also credits Napoleon with reorganizing what had been the Holy Roman Empire made up of more than 1,000 entities into a more streamlined network of 40 states providing the basis for the German Confederation and the future unification of Germany under the German Empire in 1871.”
Read up more on “HOLY” “ROMAN” “EMPIRE”.
Man really learn something when you are constantly caught writing nonsense. Like I said read and for you re-read. Then think. Then re-think. Then write. Then revise. Then Re-revise. Then Post. That what HoR should do also, not just blurt out whatever comes to their “brillian” minds.

NEPAL’S INDIGINOUS CULTURES IN EXTINCTION
Who are the actual beneficiaries of the declaration of secularism in Nepal?????
The first victims of secularism will be THE INDIGINOUS CULTURES, the aboriginal faiths and practices in Nepal. They will be demolished from the face of the land.
With this declaration of secularism, the aboriginal cultures such as Kirat, rai, Limbu, Santhaal, and many others which are like tribes and which do not even have a written literatire of their rituals and spirituality, will be the first targets of the missinaries. The leaders of these cultures have already been brainwhashed by the missinaries that these tribes are not Hindus and that they should part away from Hinduism. They have survived and florished in Nepal for the last ten millenia when the country was a Hindu state. Hinduism does not convert other cultures because Hinduism itself is a religion made up of various ethnic cultures. It includes EVERYTHING and excludes nothing. Only those religions that profess that “there is no God but… and …. is the only and only messenger of God. All others are Satan and must convert if they want to survive.”
Nepali People MUST THINK what is good for them and only then decide what is good for them.
The DECLARATION OF SECULARSIM MUST BE REVERSED. IT IS RATHER OKAY TO DECLARE NEPAL AS A BUDDHIST COUNTRY RATHER. THERE MUST BE SOME PROTECTION FROM THE STATE TO THESE INDIGINOUS CULTURES. Now, surprisingly, those who consider themselves minorities and have been brainwhashed to separate from Hinduism, have never been denied any rights in the country.
I wonder what is this Hinduism. It is a word coined by British missinaries who colonized India in the 17th century. many people do not even know that they are Hindus. It is because EVERY SINGLE FAMILY HAS A DIFFERENT RITUAL, A DIFFERENT GOD, A DIFFERENT STYLE OF BIRTH-MARRIAGE-FUNERAL RITUAL. why do kirats think that they are not Hindus? why would a saarki or damaai not think they are Hindus? And why would a Buddhist want to denounce Hinduism when all Hindus in Nepal love Gautam Budddha so much? There have been no problem for the last 10 thousand years and why this problem suddenly? Hindusim is not the religion of Brahmans and Kshetriyas. It is the religion of all Nepali people who beleive in tolerance.
the Jaat paat is not a religious problem, it is a problem of the socio-economic structure, a totally different problem.
At this time, nepali people should fight against this division which has been created with a purpose of uprooting Nepali people of their original culture and then CONVERTING THEM into Christianity or Islam. why are Nepali people devided in this issue instead of being united? Hinduism is not just the religion of the King, who was a corrupt sinner. it is the religion of more than 95% people in Nepal.
If you want to devide Hindu religion into peices, yes you can, why just kirat?
all politheist religions are grouped as Hindus. Hindusism is a polytheist, monotheist, atheist, nihilist, pantheist religion.
tut,tut Culture there you go again choosing what suits you (like your slow pace of change thingy.) So history books call Napoleon a ‘child of the revolution’ not because he was a product of revolution and and not because the Napoleonic codes were totally influenced by the philosophers that prodded the revolution, like Voltaire, but because it was a cool name…like 50 cents, huh?
Yeah you would rather refer to idiots like Robespierre than the true philosphers like Voltaire, Rousseau, Hume and Smith who espitomised the essence of the French Revolution and carry on about Napoleons betrayl of the Republic rather than the grounding breaking laws he proclaimed.
Like I said the Devil will quote the scriptures to further his interests.
“Like I said the Devil will quote the scriptures to further his interests.” hmmmmm Kirat you seem to be quite aware of this. Are you sure of you intentions?
Voltaire preferred Enlightened Depotism by the way. I guess you got you facts again, but whats new about that.
“Yeah you would rather refer to idiots like Robespierre than the true philosphers like Voltaire, Rousseau, Hume and Smith who espitomised the essence of the French Revolution and carry on about Napoleons betrayl of the Republic rather than the grounding breaking laws he proclaimed.”
I guess if I like to see the negative, you only see the postitive. I rather look at thing that hurt Nepal, instead of just ignorantly glorifying positives. Stop accusing me, looks like your the real “Devil’s Advocate”. Show then them fortunes but hide the inferno.
Culture-when we come down to bare bones of this present discussion about the French Revolution-you were the wise moron who said it was not a real revolution. Remember? Negative and positive? Who is denying the untold misery the French Revolution brought to the French people? But it did also bring what we today call ‘enlightened laws’ to the world e.g. The equality of all men before the law. Laws that helped reform and modernise society-from a feudal society-to it’s present state. That’s a real revolution for me. But I know you would rather talk about Robespierre and Napoleans betrayl of the ideals of the Revolution.
Liberte, Equalite et Fraternite-this was the call of the French Revolution, it still is the official call of the present French Republic.
So who needs to think before they dimiss the French Revolution, huh?
Ha, ha, if only I had the Devil’s powers! But being non-religious I am afraid I don’t believe in the Devil!
Poor Voltaire, you make it out as if that was the only thing he believed in! (By the way I would prefer Enlightened Despotism to any other form of government-but we know we are talking about miracles, so I go for the next best thing, a democracy)
“HINDU REPUBLIC OF NEPAL”
I am a “damai”, if you beleive in the caste system based on “birth” but I am proud to be a damai because I do not understand it any inferior than any caste. I am educated, and I have enough means to survive with the grace of bhagwan, so nobody in nepal has discriminated me. The so-called brahmins (by birth only) come to my home, drink, play cards and have lunch and dinner because of my educated status. They would not do the same to a damai in a remote village, who would be wearing torn and dirty clothes and who is poor.
So what is caste system? It is a social category, and not a dharmik category.
I have read most of Hindu scriptures, specially Upanishads, which are eye openers in existentialism. Our Hindu religion has nothing to do with the caste system.

so, let us voice against this SECULAR NEPAL. let us fight to keep our culture, our “HINDU REPUBLIC OF NEPAL”
Secualrism will only destroy our ethnic cultures and convert us all into new religions which are the roots of 21 century “religious wars and fundamentalism.”
Bravo damai! I can see that a thousand years of casteism has had no effect on you! Out of curiosity what are your reasons for wanting a Republic?
