Meanwhile Maoist Comrades Continue Extortion, Looting and Beating

Army Press Release

They aren’t killing people because they have officially declared ceasefire for three months. But Maoist comrades aren’t keeping quite, at least according to the Royal Nepal Army. RNA was fighting with the Maoists until last month’s popular movement forced autocratic king to give up the power to people. Now both sides are observing ceasefire but it has been widely believed that rebels are doing unfair activities like extorting money, kidnapping unarmed people and looting.

Here in this blog, UWB presents a digitized avatar of a copy of today’s press release issued by the RNA. The only difference between this release and the ones that RNA used to issued before the April Revolution is that the word ‘terrorists’ have been replaced by ‘Maoists’. Also another missing element is the point that talked about how many people were killed in a clash.

For those who find it difficult to read the text (in Nepal) here is a quick translation:

Maoists forcefully extort money from general public: On 6 May, Maoists took control of different vehicles in Kabeli, an area between Panchthar and Taplejung districts in eastern Nepal, and took Rs. two thousands to five thousands from each person. They also took Rs. one thousand from each cab that were taking people to Pathivara temple, a famous religions site.

On 5 May, Maoists extorted money from general citizens in Kyamin, Bar Bhanjyang, Swatimara, Manpang, Syangha Pokhari Bhangyang and Bhirkkot area of Tanahun district. They also demanded money (equal to the salar and other benefits of 80 days) from local teachers.

Maoists Beat General Public: On May 8, Maoists abducted Dwarika Yadab, Dhappan Lon and Hari Yadav of Lwani area (Kapilbastu district) and attacked them with sharp knives etc. Dhappan Lon is undergoing treatment in Toulihawa hospital.

Lootings by Maoists: On May 8, Maoists looted food, clothes and cooking equipments from Jeevan Ram Bista, the Chairman of the Lamjung District Development Committee and locked his home.

Have you ever lived 10 years in communists ruled country? If no,then, please know it that you can have your three meals a day sufficient for 24 hours but will lose your right to brag in blogs, clubs and, may be, even within your four walls in that rule. If Maoists will rule ever, you can not expect more than that, at least, for two decade. If you are wise enough, support SPA a it is the only hope for now.Your dislikes towarsds SPA are just like love and hate relations with your neighbours.

Kirat, trust Tamran will front the MAO-RNA Arms
issue, what came of the GP-Tamran meet; does anyone know?
I do not think it’s upto Baburam or SPA, esp. baburam, to upfront what move to make in terms of this arms thing, simply because they will be wading into the trust issue. Therefore knowing this I hope the Tamran team will take the pace.

Well I have always hoped that the UN would be invited to observe the ceasefire and then monitor the arms surrender if that comes to pass. Wouldn’t that be great?

    Coke:
You should ask them because the encoachments happened when these political leaders were in power! What did they do about it? The political leaders were in power for the last 15 years but did they do anything about the Bhutanese Refugee issue? No they did nothing. Why didn’t they raise the issue of India encoaching into our territory at the UN and make a big fuss???
Do you know that Girija speakes in Hindi during private conversations! And crown princess Himani is Indian!
Why are you so bent on asking the Maoists… you think they will be worse then what we have had?

    Kirat:
It might not be the UN but a country like Norway. You see India has long blocked a third party involvement in Nepal because they do not want to set a precedence for its own problms in Kashmire. So we might have to get the Norwegians!

  10. Kirat Avatar
    Kirat

Yeah I have been saying that our leaders should have the balls to defy India and even China, I think, on this one issue. Individual countries like Norway (look at Sri Lanka) don’t seem to have the same weight. Perhaps a mass movement on the streets to pressure the govt. to call the UN? If Prachanda and co. really want the UN they could easily orchestrate another street protest…(just joking)

Bhudai, girija speaking in Hindi aside, do you think it’s oeky to make these leaders liable to what they did, did not do pre-andolan?, exactly since our princess himani and the likes were of the Indian Origin and was hard to break the chord for the political leaders albeit the royal wall that they could never succumb over?
Basically, what I’m trying to say is that, the Royal-Indo relation has been just that Royal-Rajput, geopolitical issue was swept under the carpet by them, no questions asked, either by the royals or the politicians.

    Maoists are thugs.
They actually do not respect any theory, rule, maoism but only money. If they get money from top smugglers they will not hurt them. If they don’t get money they will kill even poor people. They have killed Bachan Shiromani Narayan Pokharel because they get money from Royal Palace, Bhart Keshar Singh

Mr. Coke has asked very good question.
We should not ask those questions to Spa leaders because it is already Proved in last 15 yrs that they are a failure group. Every time new PM comes (from any party)he goes to india to take blessing from indian govt.
Any kind of treaty happened in those years Nepal has not got its right share because these leaders don’t have good bargaining power. OR i should say they have bargaining power for their personal commission.

Now SPA and Maoists is saying it wants to make void all the laws passed in the period of Kings rule. That should be done but All the UNFAIR TREATY should be called Void. Can SPA + Maoists do it? Don’t think so. Coz maoists are also living this long with the blessing of india.

  17. Bhudai Pundit Avatar

So the Maoists are living with the blessing of India, the SPA are living with the blessing of India and the King is living with the blessing of India?

BetterNepal has got that right. All look to India for it’s blessings. Scoundrels all! They have no balls to consider themselves an equal-the SPA are probably the worst culprit. Who the fck are Chandra Shekhar and Yechuri? Our leaders I am afraid have no backbone when it comes to dealing with India.

And Keep in mind india has already called their favourite DEVOTEE girija to visit india and have some prasad. KP Oli has also got same invitation. Lets watch and see when they will go to have their PRASAD from back side of india.

    BatterNepal,

No, not the MAO and not the SPA directly either but under the “umbrella” of the king, by default, the political relationship with india was based on Kings immidiate selfish needs, to which the Parties had to comply with. So. I would not blame them for not standing against the Indians then.

It’s a differnt playing field altogether now, so The SPA can play balls as they like, I would say they can have the UN/third party mediate to negotiate the Unfair treaty deals as well.

I doubt your doubt that MAO’s would not have been able to live this long without Indias blessing, as if that is how the indians are keeping the Naxalites.

WHY CONCENTRATE ON MAOIST VIOLATIONS OF CEASEFIRE THE ROYAL NEPALESE ARMY WAS KILLING PEOPLE EVEN AS PRACHANDA WAS ANNOUNCING A CEASEFIRE.

SITARAM YUCHURY AS MEDIATOR SAYS BOTH PARTIES AGREE TO UN CEASEFIRE SUPERVISION.

WHAT EVERBODY SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT IS THIRD PARTY ATTEMPTS LIKE THE INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP TO CREATE NEW AGENDA’S IN NEPAL AND USE ANY EXCUSE TO BREAK THE 12 POINT AGREEMENT.

IF NEPALESE PEOPLE LEFT TO THEMSELVES I BELIEVE AN AGREEMENT CAN BE CONCLUDED BY MAOISTS AND PARTIES BUT I WARN AS SITARAM YUCHURY WARNED TO WATCH ALL MANEOUVRES TO SABOTAGE PROCESS OF WHICH VIOLATIONS WILL BE PROVOCATIONS UNTIL UNITED NATIONS SUPERVISION IS IN PLACE.

    Better Nepal:
I agree with you that India excercises a considerable influence on us. Given our geographic proximity that does not come as a big suprise.
However, I also blame our people and our political leaders… Our leaders were all bred in India I mean Girija speaks Hindi during private conversations. They are an unpatriotic bunch. The Monarch of course has had strong relations with rajput families and in fact princeness Himani is from India!
But we as a people have allowed Indian culture, television, food etc. to completely inflitrate our lives. I was shocked when I went to a really fancy wedding in KTM last summer. The food: Indian the music: Indian the cloths and jewellery all bought/made in India.
This is just one example. In fact in Kathmandu these days its become really difficult to find a traditional “Nepali” sweet swari! It’s all become Indianized and we have ourslves to blame for that also.

    Hey who is scolding Yechuri?

I don’t know much abt him but he is a good man towards Nepal and our democracy.

He is the one to make initiative to support our revolution.
India had already urged us to make ‘samjauta’ with king in the first announcement.
But he and his socialist party is the one who made india change it’s decision .

If BJP was in power , they would have gone to any extent to support king.

It’s good that we be careful abt out neighbors and their plots.
But labelling all the same and scolding all helping hands only disclose our ignorance, immaturity and insecurities.

We have to recognize good friends frm bad friends, good steps frm bad ones.

We should appreciate concern and effort of anybody for restoration of our democracy.

  27. Kirat Avatar

It shows our true poverty in all aspects as citizens of this world that we have to praise people like Yechuri for solving our problems. We Nepalis seem to have lost all faith in our own ability to solve our own problems to such an extent that even a non-entity like Yechuri is looked upon as a saviour. Why don’t you all call Laloo next time there’s a problem.

And don’t mix this up with the UN role-it’s a totally different thing.

Please Kirat don’t be like a stupid 16 year old scolding everybody and boasting blindly on ‘andha-rastrabaad’.

I didn’t say he is the saviour , messiah to make this revolution a success. But he has of course helped a lot.

You must be well aware of his active role to support the revolution.
I need not tell u that we need help, concern, and effort frm everybody …to make solution easier and sooner.

and role of our neighbors is a very vital one…
i say thank yechuri who unlike BJP has not left all their conscience to reserve this nation as ‘hindu nation’ where king is the emblem of Lord Vishnu.

If Bush helps for our democracy and peace I will appreciate him too and why not Lallo too if he also acts for our democracy and King Gyanendra too if he becomes sensible enough to go for unconditional CA.

I know i need not tell u all these things.

Kirat, u sometimes act sensible and logical…but u come down to the lowest of grounds, meanest of acts and ‘stupidiest’ of words when u feel urgency to defend yourself.

Why do u have to assume and try pathetically to prove yourself a Mr. know all…

Of course, Mr. Yechuri has gained prominence.. unfortunately, he is a leader without any mass-base and never fought any elections [nominated member of Rajya Sabha – backdoor entry).. he is a kind of parasite only the communists have time and again produced – talks about democratic ideals but ‘manages’ to be elected in the working committee and runs a kitchen cabinet. What Mr. Yechuri can do is fight elections here and fulfill his dream to be elected by popular vote. And our SPA leaders and the Maoist leadership can elect him as SUPER Prime Minister…Best of luck!!!

And some calls me a closed mind for this ….funny..

My point was if we Nepalis had enough pride (not the false type) and belief in ourselves we would not need to rely on any outside help. Why did the king have to wait for Karan Singh, India’s emissary, to make his prounouncement, why do the SPA look continually at South Block before making any big decision (like inviting the UN) why do the Maoists also act only under pressure from India? Why can’t they decide on their own the right thing to do for our country instead of waiting for India or the US/EU to put pressure on them? This sort of thing just de-values our country’s sovereignty and we all end up losing a little bit of self-resepct as a nation everytime a Karan Singh/Boucher/Yechuri pays a visit with the sort of message they bring.

Whatever support given by India to establish democracy in Nepal is countable but inaugurating our re-established parliament by Mr. Aychuri of India is a shame to our parliament and Nepal. This will have long-term effect to the country which compel leaders to obey the instruction of India much more than past.
