Evening Updates
Chabahil, 6PM
Right now, student leader Gagan Thapa is addressing the mass that staged peaceful protest in the non-prohibited area. Here’s a quick update between 4:30 t0 6 PM:
In Chabahil a huge mass was singing with madals and chanting slogans. Human Rights acivists and monitors were watching the event. Police blocked the protesters from entering the probited area. A number of attempts were made to foil it, but all in vain. The protesters were mostly youths. Kantipur scribe Balaram Baniya commented that the Chabahil protests have come to the attention of media only lately. NC leader Bal Bahadur KC was leading the mass. A while later, the protesters sang the famed song Gaun Gaun bata utha (Wake up from village). The security forces were dispersing the bystanders. Most of them standing inside Ring Road were chased away.
People and vehicles were barred fromn entering the Boudhha area. Many toursits heading for Hyatt Hotel were stranded. At 4:45 pm, a car full of Red Cross medical team appeared. The people supported the parched and sweating protesters by sprinkling water. One Inspector was heard ordering his forces : Bato ma Niska (Come out to the streets). One army tanker was seen at 5 pm.
A handful of youths waving trade union flag tried to break the barrier posed by security. But, they were taken to the big mass in the other side. At 5:30 more forces arrived. One private van was slightly damaged by the protesters and one of them confiscated the keys. The Inspector was ordering his subordinates not to fire at the protesters as the milieu was getting tense.
Balaju, 3:35
The erstwhile agitating venue of Goganbu, it seemed, was shifted to Balaju. A massive numbers of Armed Police Force (AFP) was deployed. A woman was uttering disgust against king. NC
(Democratic) leader Prakash Sharan Mahat was finding it hard convincing the angry demonstrators. They were saying that the procession should have gone towards Samakhusi to join others. They finally proceeded towards Gongabu.
Kalanki, 3:30
An unidentified man was giving speech. As the movement badly lacks leadership, people are volunteerily giving speeches. The mass of around 1 thousand was clapping and shouting. In the morning Gagan Thapa delivered speech here. So, they were there for the whole day.
Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus, 3:10
The protesters mostly consisted of young people I (Deepak)’ve noticed in Ghattekulo area. They have been regularly engaged in torch rally in that area. At 3:20 pm they burnt an effigy of the king. Policemen, staying few metres away in Putalisadak, didn’t bother to foil that. Around 20 protesters demanded republican Nepal. One student leader gave brief speech.
Thamel, 10:55 AM
Nurshing Chowk, the heart of Thamel, saw chanting and procession of some 4 hundred protesters. A group of youngsters burnt tyres in front of Karmachari Sanchaykosh Building. Security forces dispersed them.
Kantipath, 11:00
Only press, ambulance and police vehicles are plying in the streets. Few rickshaws were also seen. Most of the shops are closed, a private security men at a money exchange was helping his customers.
Bhotahity, 12:30
Around a dozen journos were arrested from a peaceful protest. They were protesting the police brutality. In the streets, only micro vans and tempos operating in Lagankhel route were seen. Private vehicles and motor bikes are running. Workers of Everest Hotel staged protests.

To all those Naysayers listen : Today’s fight is for our freedom and our basic human rights against tyranny. In short for a proper democracy.
Tommorows fight will be to keep this democracy alive and well and against corrupt, ineffective and incompetent leaders.
So support todays fight because it is for your future as well as mine!
15 years of democracy and all we got was corruption, maoist and zero developement…. what makes you feel now that girija and co will take us forward?? the king may not be the solution but i believe he is our best options at the moment…
AND what do u mean by ‘support todays fight’…. ? wht fight are you talking about? stone the few cabs… torch the tempos and shops who defy your ban,, ppl who risk thieir lifes to make a living to fed their kids and family… is this the fight we are talking about?
If you want real support from ordinary folks like me and millions of other nepalis, why dont you, Kirat, ask your leaders who i believe lack morallyty, humanity and intgrity, to come out in the public and apoloigies, for the past 15 years of suffering we have had to go through. I think we deserve an apology from your so called leaders.
If not let us work and let us live our normal life. 11 days of bandh, voilance, strike is not wht we normal people deserve. thats not what we call fight for the future…. thats you and your leaders fight for power, and riches…
it is easy to talk about democracy. It is not easy to obey its rules! Without rules, democracy can not function.
We must change the names of Universities, routes, buildings to other names not in the name of any royl family. First change the name of Ratna Park to any other name like Maina Park in the name of Maina Sunuwar. Change Tribhuvan University BP University or Madan University. Ask the profs what will be appropriate. Do not leave any Royal Names. Just Change them.
People will have more sensivity towards Loktantra. Change the name of Trichandra and Padma Kanya, Ratna Rajya etc etc.
christel,
I’d rather try to obey democracy’s rules than that of a dictators.
It seems many mistakes hiding behind, why jounos were arrested? I don’t think only peaceful protest……
40.000 demonstators in small Lekhnath yesterday form far away corners of the Kaski district.
Today 50.000 in Pokhara.
It seems the whole of Nepal is demostrating including civil cervants, wifes of soldiers…
This is the fight for the 300 years of autocracy started from Shaha dynasty..time to make changes..change of Sambidhan..everything is changing and we must change this whole system. We need good leader who thinks about us and does good things for us. We tried for Gyanendra for one year..he didn’t show any remarks of that and tried more autocracy. We also tried for Girija and so on. We need some young leader which has the capacity to make it happen. As now, mass is without leaders..leadership is mostly necessary now. Lets sweep out the Gyanendra and bring the full democracy for the first time of nepalese history..
Hurrrrryyyyyyyyyyy we gonna win
Down with DEmoCracy.. loNg LivE kinG gyaNenDra
Why are we fighting here? We ought to be ashamed. I mean we have to bring a change in our heart rather than just quarrel over whats written in the blog. I understand that democracy is necessary, who doesnt seek freedom, but if people dont change what does democracy mean to one? it would be hipocracy than democracy! Democracy was never meant to hit the cabs or burn the tempos! if the people really want democracy then we have to do something, talk and also learn from our past mistakes rather than burn and charr it black the assets of THE Country. Its easy to destroy what is of others, and when it happens to you you curse them
TOM, I dont believe King is the only option left for us now . Thats the most pathetic situation i would ever imagine , as to being helpless, and stating he’s the best option.
We have seen enough of tyranny , enough of democrats , enough of monarchs . Certainly , a perfect democracy is what i aspire for. And for that , a change is required now , then or ever. The sooner it concludes is the only thing that i m hoping as of now.
The revolution now continues for freedom, for democracy and continues for corruption, for better NEPAL until we find a leader who is credible , who really can make a difference. Why not start searchin’ for one to elect now ?
Tom,
I totally agree with you. These blood sucket leaders are just trying to provoke us so that we could be their weapon against KG.They have never apologized for what they did in those 15 fcking years.Fcking indian puppets!!!
Tom/RSS
In that case the institution of Monarchy should apologize for the last 250 years of suffering, exploitation and marginalization!
Why are you (RSS and Tom) thick like a rock? I don’t want to call you an idiot but I am having troubling finding another appropriate word.
What don’t you get about democracy? Do you not understand that once we have democracy we can get rid of leaders like Girija and bring in new leaders? Do you not understand that we can prosecute Girija under a democratic/transparent system? How do you think things are better under an autocratic Monarch? The cabinate is full of his incompetant cronies who are just as currupt.
And now there isn’t even a free press to point that out…
Bhuday,
U may be partially right to say that in democracy it is at least theoritically posssible to get rid of leaders like girija or Khume (though practically impossible, we have already seen!). But do you have any justification for burnig vehicles, vandalising shops and even looting bank (Himalayan bank was looted and vandalised today)? Are these the Foundations for future Democracy you are hoping?
Aalupande,
No I agree with you that the vandalizing is completely unecessary and I condem it. I don’t know why it happens. I think it is the frustrated, unemployed youths who have no future prospects venting their frustration. There is this mob mentality in Kathmandu and people get caught up in the hyesteria very easily – remember the Hirtik Roshen incident?
But the big picture is what is important right now. Yes I believe that we can change the leaders. I think we as a people also failed in the post 1990 era. Sure the political leaders were horrible but we as the Nepali people are very passive and apathetic and we did not demand accountability from the leaders! Thing are different now – there is awareness and people know their rights so I think we can get rid of the Gririjas and the Makune…
yo tom and rss
when would you dumbo and misreably malnourished in the case of politcal knowledge get to know how the world works…you guys seem to wish that the world goes in the way u like to…come at least try to understand the situation and accept the truth fools……how many….times would u continue the same old thing and to that tom guy who said 0 development in 15 years….yo foolest person alive….there is some development in kgs time also…development is not 0 even in somalia fool man…and if u want to see the development…comapre u’re messiah kings 30 year panchyat and 15 year democracy….or do u think real development is going to the moon in 15 years huh…..why don’t u people realise it’s not a easy thing to do development…
Sometimes there is no money sometimes someone oposses like the maoist did for 10 years…..yeah the root cause was due to corruption from politicians but i want to ask all of you…all of you to put u’re hand on u’re heart and say to me….if u had some urgent work to be done and u went to some office and if he wanted a bribe for doing u’re work….tell me honestly would u have kept on u’re ideology that u will let that important thing go and would still not give bribe or FOR ONE TIME ONLY would u give him bribe….neta haru le ghus khako thiyo..i agree…pheri aune le pani khalan…tara it doesn’t mean that these aristocrat and his gang rule us…where we can do nothing and even don’t get the right to know that there is corruption going on….
Hearing u fools i feel like u people like a system in which if u hear that everything is perfect more then the system where we know that many things are going on wrong…it seems u love the sweet dream of illusion more then the bitter truth of reality…but we can change that only in democracy and it takes alot of time…patience..courage and sacrifice to fight with these piece of shits that are in every society…and instead of being ready and strong to fulfill that ureself….u just wish a feudal lord will do that…..if u don’t change with time…time will change u……….YOUR WISH IS NOT THE IMPORTANT THING…..so feel the vibe of the time or let the time make u feel the vibe….
To add to what proud2bnepali said.
In the post 1990 ear till about 2001 Nepal was actually improving very slowly in its human development indicators… sure there was alot of curruption and chaos but the villages were becoming more empowered and were taking many decesions on their own, a very viberant media sector was emerging etc.
With so many retards still pinning their hopes on hosrse and buggy age monarchy, it will take a long time to build a democratic Nepal with responsible leaders.
Mr Aalupande…
Well you seem to get to angry due to some violence…yeah it’s very very bad….but how would you justify the reluctancy of the king to hear us…We are just seeing little anxiousness and fraustration for now and slowly this discontent is rising….and belive me..if this thing goes on for some more time one of two things would happen in my guess..either the people of major cities especially the bourgeoisie middle class who ironically benefit most from democracy but are being reluctant to come in aandolan yet will rise up against the parties due to the lack of food and other necessary stuff or people from every house will come to burn down naryanhiti….this stalemate can’t continue for much longer…and you royalist shouldn’t be happy if the middle class or the lower class rises against parties…there will be absolute chaos…between the pro-democracy and the people wanting the end to this stalemate…remember the mobs of 16th bhadra…I hope this will just be my senseless guess otherwise nepal will be like iraq…maoist supporting the pros with guns and the government the strike-stricken people….
One more thing about this aandolan getting violent…well Mr. aalu…..like you are angry over the violence…all the aandolankari are more angry then u over the violence over them…and when peacefull rallys and aandolan doesn’t do any good..people start having aandolan fatigue and some people stop going to aandolan and the ones who are committed search for alternative and the maoist are there with their guns ready….remeber prachanda making 7 divisions of PLA….do u think there are 70 thousand maoist guerilla….NO…he said himself if the peacefull aandolan won’t work..the young guys from SPA will join for sure cause there are alot of very committed people like gagan thapa in aandolan…and when they see no way out from peace….war is the only alternative left………so don’t get excited if this aandolan get unsuccessful and don’t wish for the aandolan to fall due to hatred of some bunch of rastraghatis……….that will mean more bloodshed and a worst future for this country……………sabai lai chetana bhaya…
‘I totally agree with you. These blood sucket leaders are just trying to provoke us so that we could be their weapon against King G.They have never apologized for what they did in those 15 f*cking years.F*cking indian puppets!!!.’ RSS said.
Dear friends,
I totally agree with the remark made by ‘proud2bnepali ‘ . If the king will not listen the peaceful voice of current movement, violence is the only alternative left. There are rare examples where dicators had given up their power to the people only from the peaceful agitation.
I am not regular writer, but i am writting this comment:
Mr TOM is absolutely correst, I agree by 100%. Leaders are cause and due to their mislleading to country now we are fighting each other :
–Maoist–>Public–>Palace–>Maoist
well sandesh i disagree to your fact. i dont think anywhere in this world that peaceful demonstrations have failed. they do give results and results are good. but the main thing is that the vision should be clear. i dont think at all that voilence is the only way left. maoists are trying to give up voilence because they know that it leads them to nowhere. voilence leads to destruction but not to solution. u can take the best example of peru where the people very similar like that in our nation. fujimori of peru who was a autocratic ruler was overthrown by the power of people. and if people really want then king gyanendra may also be overthrown. there is no question about that. but to do that many people will have to attain matyrdom because king gyanendra is a very rocksolid person in his decision. so there will be bloodshed in the nation if king gyanendra is to be removed but there is no alternative to the peaceful demonstrations.
12th day of bandh…. What a fight for democracy!!!!! and ordinary working class family like mine has to take all the burdens…. few more days of bandh and i will be out in the streets… not supporting girija and co or the king but to loot the shops and houses to feed my family.. giraja,mk,prachanda can all i believe afford 70/kg ko onions… what i and my family do?..What a revolution.. what a fight for freedom! [icd]
P.S what is democracy? In 1990’s ordinary village and city folks were made to believe that democracy brings us freedom… work..and MONEY… the result of the democracy in nepal: Maoists? All the ppl who were made to believe that democracy brings massive changes in our lives were dissapointed with what they actually got after democracy, nothing..fake hopes..In the end they had take up arms… with some of the views i read in this blog,, the maoist need not worry about their future recruits… there are still lots of nepalese living in hope, bright future, money, work after the current REVOLUTION. well if they manage to get the democracy. i am sure they will realise that once again its the leaders and netas who benifit.. not them…and the current like of kirat and co will lead a new maoist revolution… i hope i am proven wrong.
I dont follow politics, i am not a royalist, i just want peace and to be able to work…
Comrad Sandsh,
Your back. tell us what your Maoist comrades have been up to? Upto dirty business while the two fight each other???
Dear proud2bnepali,
You mentioned that your hope is vested on youths like Gagan Thapa, but you may not know the fact that he is the same person who got 1st division marks in ISc/Bsc through the help of other people writing for him at the TC canteen. In other words, cheating! Not the different history than Khum Bahadur or Dipak Bohora Eah! The only difference is he is shouting ‘democracy’ and ‘republicanism’ more than anybody! And he has eaten some lathis of police and a few days in custody as the future investment for power! Like Girija, he has done only 2 TYAG(sacrifices) 1. MAL TYAG 2. MUTRA TYAG. Sorry to say these things but reality is reality! I see no exceptionl quality on him. Sheer mediocrity! It is a bad luck of we Nepalis that we lack real leaders.
Severe life in KTM because of Long Strikes,
Thurty because of few leaders’ democracy,
Slaves minded because of being waged in the streets,
Life goes pretesting,as daily activities,
sooner metal hospitals will be waiting,
Life goes like hungry dogs longing for bones.
Ram:
Academic excellence is not necessarily a prerequisite for being a good leader…
I have heard Gagan Thapa speak. He has good leadership qualities and more importantly he has a vision. Besides when he was in the US what he said was not rubbish he spoke very intelligently and I think most people were impressed.
Ram,
I agree with you.
Stop worshipping people, be it some Thapa or some Koirala or Shah.
Sometimes, no matter how idiot Oh No is, he makes more sense in his insane babble than many who proclaim to be intelligent and learned, e.g. Bhudai.
Bhudai is a good person, but he too slips sometimes into endorsing the idea of deifying a person.
Bhudai,
(1) Explain what vision is, and how it helps to run a government efficiently. Let us have a debate here. But remember you cancelled out the idea of education, as if it were disposable or dispensible.
(2) Let us start with how one can have or form a vision without private studies or school studies, and
(3) move from there to how that vision helps for a governing purpose.
My brother, G-Hangman, used to tell me that you are a smart kid. Let us see your smartness.
