UWB Note: Nepali blogging in UCLA: News in the UCLA Paper and Notice
The mass meet announced by SPA to condole the four martyrs of ongoing agitation was foiled by security forces today afternoon.
[4:15PM] by UWB! Team
1:30, Bir Hospital
Journos were already gathered. Security personnel were dispersing the pedestrians. Protesters including the staff of the hospital were shouting slogans. Protesters came to the streets and started shouting pro-democratic slogans. Security forces started baton charging and arresting them. NC leader Shashanka Koirala and others were arrested.
Then, arrested protesters chanted slogans against king. In Mahaboudhha side, more protesters gathered, police ruthlessly beat them and few were arrested. Bhagawati Kafle, Rajendra Dhakal and other three protesters were among the arrested. Female protesters were arrested by security men. Protesters were chanting slogans even inside the police van.
A Chat with a protester
We spoke to Netra Poudel, 23, activist of United Front Nepal., from Baglung. As we spoke to him, few people gathered and listened to our conversation eagerly. Netra was enthusiastic about the prospects of ongoing movement. He says that the movement is heading towards republican Nepal. But, he is aware of growing police brutality. He participates as per his party’s instruction. Yesterday, he was at Gongabu that saw the historical protest.
Bhotahity, 2:20
Police blocked the entrance. One sweet shop and a book store were only open. Police men were scolding the pedestrians. One of them was angry with Home Minister. He said: Kamal Thapa le matra Satta Tikayera Hunchha? (Can Kamal Thapa alone hold the state?)
We, Deepak, Tilak and Ujjwal, walked along the Jana Bahal; there were only 11 security forces. Few cloth shops were open. Life around New Road was normal, but most of the shops were closed.
There is no day time curfew today.
[10:30AM]
KAUSHALTAR, 7:00AM to 9:45AM
At 7 this morning, Kaushaltar looked normal with a good number of motorbikes and a few public buses plying on the road. Yesterday evening, after a few demonstrators lit fire on road and went, the police brutally beat the shopkeepers and shoppers around causing much of people’s dissatisfaction over the leaders who they believed failed to lead them.
At 7:20 AM, the local leaders were being being criticized for not being with the people. They accepted the mistake and said that won’t happen the next time. People asked them to talk with local inspector who was in-charge of the brutal beating. The leaders talked with him and warned him not to repeat such incident again.
Then after, it was time for the peaceful demonstration. We all sat on the middle of the road with party flags and started chanting slogans. I realized I was holding party flag after 1990. I was holding two flags, once each of the Communist party and the Congress party. We sat there for two hours, didn’t disrupt the traffic (asked them to use the sideways). We warned the participating demonstrators not to use stones unless police attack us. About two dozens of policemen were 50m away watching us.
At 10:30, a rally from Thimi/Ghattaghar joined us. We tried to move forward to Lokanthali but a lot of policemen arrived who were using abusive words for us. We warned them not to use such words. A truck of army stopped and an army officer with a radio communication tried to push us back using abusive words (we have at least not expected such words from the army because the many army vehicles passed us during our sit on and they just smiled at us).
Police officer requested us not to advance saying that they had to obey orders from ‘above’. We didn’t try to push forward as they were in good number and a truck load of army were standby with their officer agressively talking to us. We ended the program and vowed to continue the peaceful demonstrations in the evening hours.
So far, there is no news about day-time curfew. If there isn’t any, the curfew will probably be imposed from 12:00 noon to 5:00PM as of yesterday which they announced would continue until further notice.

are you trying to say that state has ultimately bowed down to the people?
there is a new word for brutality: nepal security men.
Go Ujjwal dai go…every one should do everything within their capacity to bring meaningful results to the protest led by people themselves…
They went and beat up tourists too. Good God, how stupid are they? How goddman stupid?
Even Maoists don’t do that.
You know, once, about 15 years ago, I was passing through Biratnagar and I saw these cops just bully and beat an old man and I didn’t think much of it. But now I think its in their culture.
with power comes responsibility. the people in power in nepal dont know how to be responsible.
I just wanted to convey my messages to the leaders of the party that after the andolan is sucess action should be taken to those police man who are on the scene on charging brutally on the demostrators.
The pary should make sure that the all the responsible persons from the ministers to the police man should be charged of this and proper action will taken against them.
My supports are always is always there with the people on the roads.
Let hope that we will have a Peace Nepal in the year 2063

Guys I believe most of us have listened to the interview with GP and Mahara on http://bbc.co.uk/nepali.
GP declines he has any kind of support from MB where as Mahara says they have full support to SPA. Mahara says that their party is surprised to know that GP and SPA have not yet accepted the fact that Maoists are supporting their acts.
That tells you how well planned this revolt for Democracy is. Even our so called great leaders are not sure what they are doing. That tells us how big Cheats these corrupt politicians are. Nepali people are wasting their blood running behind these idiot Politicians. This revolt is not a peaceful. SPA puppets are vandalizing public property. They just want to create chaos and create terror in public.
I too want to see democracy in the country but not in the hands of these crooked politicians. Even if SPA wins this battle, situation will not improve but will only get worsen.
Once again, listen the interview and that says all.
all rt here is some news for all democracy loving people. last night we had a blackout in this area, not because we wanted to but we were forced, not on the requests of policemen but threats from the local hooligans. In exact words the threat was like we will lit your house on fire, break all the window panes and even kill.
This blog sucks!
This blog is for the blind supporters of politician parties. I wonder if it is run by SPA.
My post was not published because it speaks truth which SPA puppets could not withstand.
If you people don’t understand what “Free Speech” means then you guys still don’t know what Democracy is.
Shame on you guys.
I am pretty sure that this post will too get moderated but atleast my message to this “insane” moderator must have reached.
Hey Rohit,
It happens to the best of us…and the worst! Ha,Ha!
great work
Heard from merosansar dom com (written this way just to avoid to get waited for moderation)that madankrisna dai and Haribansa dai got beaten in a road drama. Can someone please independently verify this?

Atleast policemen, armymen (all security personel) are learning such abusive words but they don’t know how will be their future after our bright democracy, anway we’ve to note down their lists.
In our such protest program there are number of policemen and armymen are fully drunk we got when we use to face to face with them.
I had written something aganist the political parties, but not supporting king though, I was just saying that the sacrfice of the peoples will go in vien once the political parties come on power and my comments was not posted,
it’s horrible
Hey I believe there is a huge rally heading towards Khula Manch. Any updates UWB?
stupid…idiotic….
vandalizing for peace..
throwing stones at police is humane and police using the baton is inhumane…. the young little biys who were supposed to go to school to learn some maths and science are denied to go to school and few end up stoning the cops…nice..freedom fighters…
nepal police i know for fact is no any saint…they are full of bull crap cause i have seen a lot of police brutaltiy even in the so called democratic days…but, if u throw stones at them, they will throw it back at you…i would and so would you..so the cop aint no different.
GIVE PEACE A Fkciung CHANCE…. dont dance on some neta’s tunes. tomorrow say if they strike a deal and they call off the strike and which they will….people of nepal you will loook one foolish bunch…cause you who are protesting are not a leyman NEPALI, you are a Nepali congress, nepali communist or some poltical tagged people not just a plain nepali like me and thousand others….
About what happened in the Gonggobu,i thing its very natural. Those guys shouldnt have entered other peoples home in the first place.Iam sure i will kill any one who comes into my house illeglly.Fcking morons, if you really care about democracy go enter the palace not some police’s home and terrorize their wives and children.
What do you think is i enter your house when you are playing games with you wives in bed????
Morons!!!!
Everyone has been asking – Where are the SPA leaders? Well they are in hiding. The government propoganda has said there is huge Maoist infiltration in the protests, Girija has denied it BUT the Maoist themselves through Mahara has confirmed that it is a joint program. There lies our answer to why the leaders have not joined the protests.
First, the Maoist do not want the leaders getting all the credit if they lead the protests, as the media will potray them as the leaders of the movement. So to make it a joint movement the SPA leadership has to stay out, as the Maoist leadership cannot come out in the front for obvious reasons.
Second, the 12 point understanding has allowed for this joint rally, but the agreement was made at the highest levels, there is no such guarantee of the SPA leadership’s safety (especially of people like Girija) if they are out on the streets with Maoists among the protesters. I doubt the low level cadres of the Maoists have forgotten the days of Girija and Kilo Sera. They may have lost their relatives and friends and many villagers had joined the movement due to the infamous KS operation, a brainchild of Girija. So too with other leaders when in government.
So do we think that the SPA leadership will risk their lives to take part in the protests, under normal circumstances it would be a great opportunity for the SPA leaders to shine, but they have not grabbed this opportunity for a great photo op for fear for their own lives and keeping in track with the 12 point agreement.
Otherwise to avoid this extreme police brutality, if the leaders led from the front this brutality could be avoided as these same police have served and may again serve under these leaders. But without the leaders the police are striking with fear also as they know the Maoists are also within the protest groups.
hey kp,
Everyone knows that the present leaders of the SPA are a corrupt opportunistic bunch. No need to highlight that-it’s old news.
And when did you start believing everything Mahara says? Smacks of hypocrisy there.
Anyway whats your point? Do you have one?
well…slaves are slaves….they will never learn anything…they never face the fact….they are all like this now…they will be like this forever….the slaves of g shah, the slaves of girija and the slaves of prachanada…..what a sarcasm….you r gettin moderated…god…my comment also get moderated…i speak against king but still my comment are also not published sometime and you…bunch of petty idiots make it a big issue…and yo rohit guy…do u have know how the web works and these blog sites works….don’t try to show u’re still a good guy although u hate netas by saying u’re in favour of democracy….like it or not dude…but netas were the ruler from the beginning of time and till somehow this earth turns to utopia…there will be netas and there will be problems and there will be andolans and yo there mr.replytoall…i am tired of replying to u in fact coz a crook will always be a crook and don’t try to show u’r good old peace loving nepali janta…..yeh for kamal thapa you are his good old “give peace a chance no matter what happens for how long” theory janata….so there’s no point in replying to a ‘saint’ like u……and finally this rss guy…well u really should have given that to your great 100 year old crap that we call gorkhaptra…i am sure it would have been the top news coz u know they must be tired of publishing that the king had a stone in his nasta….or the crown prince couldn’t have a nice shot at the crow of royal palace….okey it is of course an offence to enter someone’s house without asking….but u dumbo fool..for example if u are in some headquarter of nepal…and suddenly u heard firing and hear that thre has been an attack and there’s a house….would u stay in the road saying…oh my gosh i can’t go in there coz it’s wrong…and the house owner also being human being should try to asses the situation….but there they sent dogs….beat them up…COZ THEY HAD AN ARROGANCE U MORON OF BEING THE AIGP OF POLICE…..and he really seemed well of chooor police officer looking at his house….and hey moron u’re minister what saying there was maoist shooting from there….and what about the police going to 4 story high buldings and beating people until they faint or get almost killed….and what about that ssp a…hole promising of bringing out the shooter….yeah we will enter the royal palace but we musn’t forgive the royal puppets who commit crimes against the people…and if it were not crime each house of every police officer would have been attacked througout the country….that is not happening……so wake up AND THINK WELL BEFORE YOU SPEAK….MORON…..congenital idiot
Reply to all,
So if I enter your house you would kill me…give me your address..i will come some day..and want to see whether you will kill me or not…I am sure you might beat me ..but no way you you can kill me pall..that is the difference betweeen you and this kukura gyanendra’s sahisattaa..my point is ..how can you indiscriminately fire a crowd when there was no situation as such to fire…even if there was situation there was a presesnce of a bunch of armys and police personnel to take the situation in control…eyewitnesses and press also have been reiterating that the secutirty pesonnel themselves tried to mistify the situation by saying the infiltration of maoisist and tried to creat a havoc there… if you still belive that dozens of those people who got seriously injusred yesterday in Gongabu deseved that…you must be one of the benificaries of this kukursatta..or you are egregiously insane.
hey proud2bnepali… you should ashamed for such words towards fellow gentlemen..how can u fight for democracy and peace if donot tolerate others opinion…be a real democrat, my friend..
we all are aware of the past… about koiralas..nepal and company and offcourse, deuba and his rana dynasty..
but then,
lies the word… HOPE….HOPE..
we people have no alternative…because king has pushed us so far..
therefore the ANDOLAN is necessary, for our better future even if its bleak..
Kirat,
If you dont get the point then you’re lost. THE POINT BEING YOU ARE JUST SUPPORTING THE DEMISE OF ONE FORM OF FACISM AND THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER.
As you say the failure in the past of the SPA leaders is old news, that is exactly the point man, they have to get out and join the protests before the Maoists claim it as their own.
hey frens.. some quotations..
Revolutions always come around again. That’s why they’re called revolutions.
Terry Pratchett
Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new bureaucracy.
Franz Kafka
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable.
John F. Kennedy
The successful revolutionary is a statesman, the unsuccessful one a criminal.
Erich Fromm
a revolution of government is the strongest proof that can be given by a people of their virtue and good sense.
John Adams
kp your absolutely correct,
People have to have the leaders down on the streets, otherwise we will lose the plot completely and the Maoists will just get stronger. Kirat may be good as a bloggist but I doubt he can dent a crowd on the streets, we need the old fogies on the streets love them or hate them.

King Gyanendra has come out of his hiding in Pokhara to attend a cocktail-party given by the Coward RNA Generals in Kathmandu to mark the occasion of the New Year.
Please comment on the statement by the Home Minister that…”EXTREME FORCE CAN BE USED IF GROUPS GATHER”
How much more “extreme” can it be than the Fascist Police Attcaks in Gongabu ?
kalupande…You shameless slave of kamal thapa..it is better to carry flags of SPA leaders than serving the state and kamal thapa.About shouting dirty words…i want to bring attention of all the blog readers here that..this is the same kalupande who was using abusive words to a woman who was discussing with him about the leadership quality of Gagan thapa in Samudaya..you hypocryte..double faced scoundrel..dont you ashamed of yourselves ..he was given a good lesson there by mystichacker..I urge all the readers to go to the site of samudaye and read how kalupande was given a hard blow there
Hey UWB! Team
My house is near Mahaboudha in Janabahal(Machhindrabahal)
UWB! Team hasn’t given total fact, what i am saying is the fact.
First group of demonstrators came around 1:30 pm , they were just around 15 to 20 people. They started to make some slogans. But they were not confident they were scared, they didn’t know what to say.
There were some policemen in Indrachowk(which can be seen from the place janabahal) .
Those demonstrator tried to provoke those police personnels. Those were not a peaceful demonstration. When those police came in janabahal area all ran away.
Around 2 to 2:30 another group came out from Mahaboudha. They did the same thing. This time they tried to upset policeman by firing paper box. Again policemen came and they ran away.
After a while those people(demonstrator) gathered again and tried to burn “tyre”.
This way those demonstrator provokes policeman and tries to make environment bad.
And also there were some journalists they were also just helping demonstrators by giving fire and promoting them.
so nothing is going in a right direction. We people should be aware of these people.
Well kp,
So your only point is about what I am doing? Well done man.
I’d rather see a new bunch of leaders emerge than the same old fogies of the SPA. I think the last few days has definitely got some people thinking about the state of this country-what the position of the King, Maoists or SPA is or has been.
I am an optimist and out of the confusion, horror, misery of the last four/five days I am hopeful that the majority of the Nepal people have realised what the major political players of the country are really about. Out of this realisation I hope good things will come. Unfortunately progress will be slow there are no quick fixes.
You know I had already realized that the bunch of SPA leaders were no good, from their actions I also knew that the Maoists were wrong and now from the way the government forces have handled the demonstrations of the last four/five days and the King’s apparentlack of bother to set anything right I now know that he must be removed if this country is to progress and prosper.
Yeah I don’t have the answers to our problems, who does? But at least I’m looking for them. At least now I know it is not the King or the Maoists or the leaders of the SPA. And if all of us Nepali people start looking for what is right and discarding what is wrong with an open mind we will get there. But we’ve got to shed our bias whatever they are. As a blogger this is what I’m been trying to do. We have to accept what is wrong and reject it wherever it comes from. We have to acknowledge what is right and support it. Once each Nepali individual starts doing this then we will have good leaders coming up, we’ll have a responsible form of government, our rights will be respected and we with our country will move forward to a better future.
What I cannot stand is that even with the anonymity of blogging there are so many idiots just spouting nonsense without logic, without coherence without thinking. This is what my fight is against-people who can’t reason. If Sandesh can convince me that Maoists are good fine-but he needs to convince me using reason and logic. If a Royalist wants to convince me that the King is the best for the country thats fine-but once again explain to me how. Just don’t slam this or that without and logical reason. I will also refuse to take sides and be biased.
You know this blog is everday looking like a microcosm of our country-people just shouting at each other without understanding what they are shouting about.
Nepal’s beaten by Srilanka in semi-final of AFC Challenge cup. After the tied score of 1-1 , Lankis had upper hand in penalty shootout. (5-3) . But we are proud of our team who managed to concentrate on the field regardless of what is going on the country. You have done a wonderful job team.

Kirat,
I did’nt really understand what your response had anything to do with mine earlier one. However, I have noticed through your various postings that although you sound to have an open mind, it unfortunately is’nt. You have a tendency to stick to your pre conceived notions on ideas and events. I think you had once posted that people here seem to argue for the sake of arguing – I think this point is most valid for you more then any other blogger. To give another example, you have also posted above “You know this blog is everday looking like a microcosm of our country-people just shouting at each other without understanding what they are shouting about.” You have to understand that there are several bloggers here who do not share the exact views as the UWB team or bloggers like your self. Most are not monarchists or Maoists, so it is quite refreshing to see their views being posted in “hostile territory”. You may feel that many people agree with you in this country, but you have to realise that there are some who agree with you only in this blog which does not represent the entire nation. Your views on democracy is very different from mine and I am sure ours could be different from the general public as well. But it would serve one well if we were to listen and learn from the population also and not just preach what we know in our albeit limited ways.
kp,
you frustrate me kid! My reply was exactly meant for people like you. You said you had a point but only pointed out what you thought about me instead. How disapointing.
You accuse me of ‘sticking to pre-conceived notions on ideas and events’ but fail to explain to me what my ‘pre-conceived notions’ are and why they need to be changed.
I welcome as many diverging views as possible but only if they are well thought and put forth with logic. That’s why I blog.
You say that your views on democracy are very different from mine but you don’t bother to spell them out.
You say I should listen and not preach. Fine but you aren’t saying anything about what you believe in or what your views are and why. You’re just being dimissive of me.
And no, I don’t think most people agree with me. I think most of them are like you-people who refuse to think and dimiss everything except your own beliefs (which you don’t seem to know what they are) without proper thought. Just read what’s on this board and you will understand what I am saying.
I have said many times in this blog, Royalists, Maoists, SPA-ists, Anarchists, Voodoists or Jytoisay-ists whoever you are please put forward your views and agruments in a coherent manner so we can all understand what you are saying and why.
I really must thank all the people who put forth well thought out posts-there are some thank God! Otherwise this board would just be a joke.
Hye Bravo,
I you guys have so much courage, then why dont you go enter The Palace and kill that Fcking Chairman. That way you could test your courage.
Plus, my point was just entering some houses and getting killed is not going to do any good.
And you should have heard of the Giraja,s interview to the BBC. He said that parties were not headed for Republic. So why break your head if there is going to be no change at all.
It will be the same KG, same Paras, same Corrupt Leaders and the same maoist(MAOIST WILL EXIST TILL KG EXISTS).So what is the difference? Why are they getting killed when there is nothing you can get??????Thats why i call them Morons.
Proud to be nepali,
you are a crook because you are trying to infiltrate here and adulterate this pure and clean blog site with your offensive and vulgar words.
you are a slave beacuse of your slave menatlity of not recognizing the people’s soveriegn and democratic right to choose their own representatives but willing to serve this despotic and desipcable king and killer chora Paras
you are a hypocryte because on one hand you condemn the bauhanbad and other hand you support the historical underpinning root of brahminism i.e. raja and their bhardwars
I would like to ask you…. do you really think that people like Jagat gauchan, padma sundar lawati, kamal thapa , badri mandal etc is better than girija and makune. If yes, why?
please dont use offensive language anymore…not because i can not withstand that but because I expect some readers in this site who are not used to such words. if you really used to such abusive words, you can open your own blog and gather your kind of people and use as much as you can.
The king it seems wants to stick it out. He is under the illusion that the protest will die down soon enough… I don’t know maybe it will. I don’t want it to die down but I am not on the streets, my shops are not getting closed etc. So I don’t know till how long people will be able to go on. This would be a great time for the leaders to say something but they seem to be in hiding for whatever reason.

i dont support this movement.
i want action be taken agaisnt the maoists, these are the culprits who brought this situation upon the nepalese people. true and simple fact.
instead of organizing bandhas, which affect the regular people more than the king or his men, why don’t the political parties find some other way to protest..?
