A reporter’s experience of conducting a survey for Nepal Magazine

In Nepali society, sex is the game played only inside cozy bedrooms. Well, not so any more; at least if you go through the survey my colleague Saroj and I conducted for Nepal Magazine last week. The survey revealed some startling facts: That our girls and boys are opening up more, that prostitution is rampant and authority is turning a deaf ear to it, albeit knowing very much that it exists.

It was tough undertaking a survey of this kind among sex workers, for this trade flourishes under shadowy surroundings and distrustful deals. Our first destination was Bhaktapur and we too were surprised to know that there are around one thousand five hundred sex-workers in that tiny district. “There are many reasons,” says one NGO man, “Araniko highway and the gateway to Khasa trade and to Kavre are the factors.” In another two room office of an NGO at Thamel, Maya was telling her horrible story about how she ended up in a massage parlour. Poverty is the main reason, but many are in for easy money. 57 per cent of respondents have said that they took the profession due to poverty. But, 19 per cent sought enjoyment in it.

Back in our office, the gorgeous and sizzling lady model was willingly giving numerous poses tinged with sex appeal. Her male partner was rather shy making the traditional credo topsy-turvy. As the living in urban areas becomes tougher, gullible rural girls are easily lured by false promises and flesh trade flourishes in the form of cabin restaurants, dance bars and massage parlors. Most of the stories are same: they are dumped by their boyfriends or are drug addicts or were used to having sex with guys in their early teens. 29 per cent of them had their first sexual intercourse with lovers. Sex trade is an undenying phenomenon. To curb it is simply impossible. The state’s agenda should be sex management, not the occasional raids and torture to the fair sex.

A story based on the survey was published in Nepal Magazine last week.

well, thank for such write up but mean time the photo u made with models is not suit in the write up. some data look like mere asumption. ur report is somewhat an ad for sex-mood. writing seems mare imagination of a young guy what is lacking sth. Here, data u want to focus are quite astry of main write up. lang. and presentation are praisewrothy.

“United We Blog! for a Democratic Nepal” – difficult to place this story within that frame- especially with those ‘suggestive’ly lewd pictures. I think the results of the survey can hardly be called startling. Anyone who sees the number of ‘cabin’ or ‘dance’ restaurants and sleazy massage parlours that have, or had cropped up on the streets of Kathmandu. Other findings are quite interesting, specially that 19% of the respondents have not been forced into the profession. But please- we could really do without the pictures. Just because its a survey on sex, doesnt mean you have to visually ‘embellish’ it. I doubt if Kinsey had such visual illustrations in his report.

Truths are really bitter.

Reports are shocking.

This is indeed an issue to be discussed .

But then, is modelling has anything to do with prostitution or fornication? i think no, and i wonder how the gorgeous and sultry model got scruples to pose herself in a magzine, merely a reporting, her sizzling curves has gone astrayed , it gets no any credit, did she really understand on what she is featuring at the time of photo session? very funny! these clips do not make any sense to me.

And its really shocking, how the editor might have approved those clips. How the reporters might relate this report to the clips.The pics are neither vulgur nor decent, they are neither obscene nor artistic, but certainly, the photograph could be taken and given in better manner, with a meaning.

What do the photos have to do with prostitution? I feel sorry for the young woman who chose to model for them, because she looks like a [icd] in the photos, as well, making a “come on”. Is that how she wants to be known?

If you had left the photos out, you would have had a convincing story. But what is the point of a “survey”? does this man really think that prostitution is something new? When was he born? Prostitution is as old as time.

The part of the whole scenario he should have focused on was that women will always prostitute themselves for money, and often because they are poor. That is a fact. And since this is the case, prostitutioon should be legalized and controlled, although that may not be possible in a country like Nepal.

The real issue here is the spread of HIV and AIDS. The rate of HIV in India is growing at such a rapid rate that it will soon overtake Africa with more HIV cases. And who bears the brunt of this? the WOMEN, who are often left widowed, with children,and the children, who ultimately are orphaned.

In Nepal, with the open borders and so many men going to india for work, it is a real concern. The other concern is truck drivers, police and army who regularly frequent prostitutes and travel back to their home villages. In western countries, antiretroviral drugs are readily available. They, however, are NO CURE. There IS NO CURE FOR AIDS. The antiretrovirals will only help extend your life a bit. But in Nepal, antiretrovirals are not readily available, and the cost is prohibitive for all but a few.

The answer is education. But even with education, women in nepal are often at the mercy of men who refuse to use protection. And it is in no way confined to prostitutes. Young men and women in Kathmandu are equally at risk. Education is the key, but is there any sex education in the schools in Nepal? in the usa, children start sex education quite early, and it is graphic and does not shy away from the hard truths. My son was already learning about a condom when he was in 6th grade, which is not too early. Thailand has a similar program, and they have drastically cut the rate of HIV infection by their education programs and also monitoring the sex trade.

Again, prostitution is as old as time. but HIV and AIDS are not. And they are deadly, and spreading quickly in Nepal. And, unlike the west, in the underdeveloped countries they are spread mainly through heterosexual sex, not homosexual. THAT is scary.And it is not just prostitutes you have to worry about. Don’t demonize prostitutes. As long as there are men willing to go to prostitutes and then return to their wives and family, the rate of HIV and AIDS will continue to climb. It is not a joke, and your photos trivialize this serious issue.

And to the young woman in the photo (and the young man): are you proud of posing like a whore and her customer? I hope not. You are not doing a service to the young people of nepal who need responsible role models.

oh, one more thing. To those who will invariably say, oh, I’m american, so I have no right to talk because we hvae highly suggestive ads here, too. I say this: we also have education programs in the schools and AIDS is mainly spread through gay sex, not heterosexual here. We also have antiretroviral drugs and regular testing programs. THAT is the difference. It does not mean we are “better”. It just means in an underdeveloped country like Nepal, there is not the health care available to deal with this kind of tragedy nor the education programs in the schools to teach responsible behaviour. As the article pointed out, talk of sex is “hush hush” in your society. And “hush hush” can mean disaster, and DEATH, if precautions are not taken to protect yourself.

This type of ‘survey’ or ‘story’ is not new to the Nepalese press. I conducted a month long investigation into the sex industry in Nepal almost two years ago. During that time, I published a series of articles in The Kathmandu Post, like

It is indeed sad to see that the journalists have been unable to go further than just stating the facts which is nothing new.

Perhaps it would have been better for the journalists to actually talk to the sex workers, assess their needs, see were they are coming from and also understand what they need. I know there are several empowernment groups of sex workers.

If they were focusing on sexual awareness they could have interviewed general people. And like everyone else I think the pictures add no value to the story, infact all they do is make it ‘hot’

In america sex is just about [icd] a good looking person thats it it doesnot have any meaning as in our society. at least 12 year old girl dont get pregnant in our sociey. what about girls having sex with random guys they meet every weekend they party in frat house or some club. Education has’t prevented aids or prevented 12 year old from getting pregnant has it?

The story is very informative, but the pictures you posted depict what I had expressed. I don’t think there was anything like icd there. Whoever the guy is look like a [icd]!

I have been also in view that Nepalese authorities need to manage sex than raiding entertainment houses. Instead, they are exploiting the industry as a milching cow.

Amazing, since the whole point of the story was about whores! what’s your problem, United We Blog? it is a simple statement of what I (and clearly others) see.

Who cares what we do in the USA? the USA has 260 million people living there! I don’t know and don’t care what a person does in the privacy of their own homes. But in a country like Nepal, where AIds is starting to become an epidemic, you should care. We care about AIDS and STD’s here, too, but as a developed country, we have the education and medical tools to deal with it. Nepal does not. It is a great tragedy for a young Nepali woman to find she has HIV or AIDS, with young children and the stigma of the disease. Many prostitutes who return from India are ostracized from their famlies after finding out they have the disease.

It is quite a different issue in a poor country like Nepal. One of the big problems is public awareness. Many people don’t understand the disease at all and think that just by touching someone with AIDS, or being near them and breathing the air they breathe, they can get sense. The ONLY ways to contact AIDS are through sex (exchange of body fluids) or through intravenous drug use (using unclean needles that have been explosed to blood of an HIV infected person). This is another route of transmission for Hepatitis B, also a common disease spread by sharing needles and by sex.

I dont understand the photo ordeal!

First the write of the blog says that he found it rather uneasy when the female model was happy to give poses with sex appeal than the male model. But that is what models are suppose to d, arent they? Be professional. It just shows that the female model they chose was more professsional than the male model. And I think she did a phenomenal job on her part.

Such sureys are common, if not in Nepal. India Today carries such a asurvey every year. And THey do carry rather artistic pictures if not vulgar.

And the readers should not be reacting to the pictures or the model (callin her a whore). Thye should be reacting to the poor write up.

And sanobahini, Please for god’s sake you dont have any right to call some one a whore.

All in all these write ups depict atleast kathmandu (if not Nepal) is moving towards sexual liberation and I dont think any body should have a problem with that.

But the real thing to worry about is the prostitution. Yes it a easy profession to earn money but no matter how professional you become one has to kill his/her soul before turning their options toward prostitution. This is another scar that the 10 year long civil war has given to us. And unless a major part of the country sees the light of development, we can be a mere spectator of the ever growing line of cabin restaurants.

What, is this a sex education class? Sorry, Gaule Keta, I won’t answer that! Exchange of BODILY FLUIDS says it all. Again, this just goes to show how desperately Nepal needs sex education in the schools. Wasn’t there an article in Nepali Times not too long ago about some of the misinformation of young teenagers in Kathmandu about sex and how AIDS is transmitted?

UWB, rather than write about surveys, why not write an informative article about the way that STDS and HIV are spread. Why not even find an educated teenager to do it! Someone who can relate to the kids!

another idea. If you had used the photo above to show the young couple about to have sex, but the young man was holding a condom in his hand. NOw that would be an educational photo. I’m not opposed to the photo itself, in the right context. But in the context of an article about a survey on prostitution, it sent the wrong message. And those stupid little “condom man” guys (its a bird, its a plane, its superman…no, sorry, its CONDOM MAN!) just make people laugh. Does anyone really take those ads seriously? you can have zillions of billboards. But they are meaningless unless you go directly to the source: THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE SCHOOLS.

So wht’s this fuss about no sex education in Nepal..If our govt has done a commendable work in anything it is health.What do u guys know by just stayin in the luxury of the cities..go to the villages even the Chepangs know of the condoms. For your kind information, Nepal is among the first nations to introduce health and population related course as a mandatory subject in high school(lower level) in Asia itself. No doubt, informal sex education in Nepal lags far behind but still by now I am pretty much sure every SLC graduate(10th grade if you are confused) is aware of sex related issues from methods of spread to use of protective devices. I know in US parents do not hesitate to watch porns along with their children. I was ashamed when I visited a friend of mine in New York and ended up watching a porn along with his parents and sisters. It might be informative but sometimes there are certain limitations and hesitations. May be we are behind because of this…isn’t it Sanobahini?
It is weird to see posts which assume lack of knowledge in this matter. Guys, wake up! Sanobahini shouldn’t be the one to teach you sex education.There are plenty of resources one can find in the internet if you are really unaware of such issues.

I have nothing to say about this poorly written and meaningless article. It lacks relevant data and research to call it a survey. Whatever you wrote, everyone knows it.

But what I hated about the article are the lines:

You have called the models to pose for your article. And probably they are professional models and they surely do not have any problems posing for you. What do you mean that the guy is rather shy and the girl was rather gorgeous and sizzling and was willing to pose for those pics. I do not feel the guy was shy either. If you think it was erotic picture, then why did you ask them to take pics in those poses….Don’t you think there is something wrong with you rather than the models ??

I just wonder how the editors of this blog allowed this writeup. Don’t you do editing? Or just because they are your friends, you put it as it is.

Rather than get this topic (which was originaly about the so called “survey” of sex workers in the kathmandu valley) off track again, let’s get to the crux of the issue. It is not porn. Porn is all over the world. In fact, if you want to read and look at porn, fine, do it! It is your right in a free society as long as you don’t harm others doing so! it is the right of UWB to publish the photos accompanying the text above, even though the articles I personally found offensive, not because of the photos themselves (They are tame compared to what any of us see on tv and movies any day of the week) but because of their inappropriateness related to the topic.

But the crux of the issue is that in most of nepal, yes, even in kathmandu, young people (even well off, educated ones) are not always practicing safe sex, and the outcome can be deadly.

Consider the minorities-50% of the cases are found among african americans while their share of total population was just 13%…and the fact that still 50% of americans believe that hiv spreads through everyday contact….more information to follow:

a 2004 survey found that whilst 99% of Americans knew that having unprotected intercourse and sharing an IV needle might transmit HIV, 38% thought that it could be transmitted by kissing, 25% by sharing a drinking glass, and 18% thought that they could be infected by touching a toilet seat.25……

What the old stale facts are there!?? Look chicken, here it is the fresh one,, The first case of AIDS in Nepal was reported in 1988. As of December 2001, UNAIDS estimated that 38,000 people were living with HIV/AIDS, and 3,500 AIDS-related deaths had occurred. As of March 2002, MOH reported 585 AIDS cases and 2243 HIV positives.

In female who inject drugs, HIV prevalence was 70 percent as of 2000.

Nepal runs the risk of an increased epidemic due to an active sex trade and high rates of girl trafficking to India for sex work. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 Nepalese are engaged in commercial sex work in India.

in January 2004, Nepalâ??s Ministry of Health reported 3,388 HIV infections and 708 AIDS cases.

by march 2005, Gvt of Nepal 4,862 living with the infections and 441 who had death of AIDS, new cases during 2005 totaled 106, and it is 0.52 percent among general polulation. GOT ??

I read some news recently about USA, official says: A housewife who had seen with teenage schoolboys and plied them with drugs and alcohol in her bid to be a ” cool mum ” has been jailed for 30 years.

Official claim she had sex with five teenage pupils, including her own daughter’s boyfriend, although she admitted only two counts. Report said.

My god you are being eaten up alive by these ignorant men! How pathetic are them making this alarming serious topic into a joke blunder…. You know one thing, no one knows the extent of this disease until it happens to themselves…..I have seen AIDS victims and know how much they suffer. It’s NO JOKE!!

What’s the use in comparing USA with nepal in terms of AIDS? USA is 60 times bigger than Nepal!! Compared to USA, Nepal’s AIDS victimes are wayyy more percentage wise…….Yes, USA has AIDS victims too that’s why they want to spread the sex education, knowledge about it so that developing countries like nepal can benefit. And especially women of Nepal who have no clue about sex education let alone their body and about protection. And what’s the problem with this???
