Our Poverty, What an Irony :(

Dailekhis grabbing the rotten rice is a crude irony to our society just like, umm…. let’s say, the hi-fi UN vehicles running on the streets of Kathmandu. Wish the rice had gone to the needy hands on time.

dailekh_food1.jpg
Moonshiners in Dailekh district headquarters scavenge rotten rice before it could be disposed of, Thursday (28 June). The rice was supplied under the UN’s World Food Program decomposed after being stored for four years. All pics by Harihar Singh Rathaur via Kantipur

The story: Four years ago, the World Food Program dispatched over 366 quintals of rice to Jumla district under the “food for work” program. As there was no motorable road up to Jumla, the rice got stuck at Dailekh, waiting for the Consumers and District Development Committees to carry it farther. The Jumlis did not trek down to Dailekh to carry the rice because carrying a sack of rice would have taken too much time and money. Obviously, for the Jumlis, there was no point in fetching the WFP rice from Dailekh.

Ch..Ch..Ch Concluding that the stored rice had become highly toxic, the local administration had prepared to bury the rice. They even refused to dump the toxic rice into a river as it could have contaminated the river and destroyed the ecosystem. As officials were about to bury the food, there came the poor people who wanted to eat the rice. They came and, as you can see in the accompanying photos, grabbed the rice. “Well, its sweet and good,” a woman was quoted as saying by Kantipur (28 June) after she cooked and ate the rice. She expressed her dissatisfaction over official decision to dump the rice even as people are hungry.

dailekh_food2.jpg

WFP Nepal office should have known this well in advance instead of storing 366 quintals of rice in Dailekh only to let the food-grains be rotten. Secondly, Jumla DDC must have communicated with the WFP office of its inability to carry the rice farther up. If not, then who was at fault – WFP or DDC Jumla? The government cannot brush aside the rice incident citing it as WFP’s business. The locals have carried away the sacks of inedible rice which may claim human lives.

To be poor is not a crime It is an indelible blot on the efficiency of government authorities, sheer negligence and, of course, an inhumane act. That a horde of local people in Dailekh scampered to grab discarded rice is an ugly evidence of how responsible our local administration offices are. The way the locals took away the “inedible” rice also points at the abject poverty, especially in the hills. This also speaks volumes about the functioning of administrative offices meant for delivering services to the people. How have the local administrative offices been delivering services to the people is a serious question. In fact, poverty and hunger are caused not by inadequate food-grains, but by the manner in which the authorities concerned have been distributing food-grains to the needy. This has forced the poor either to eat poisonous roots or starve to death.

dailekh_food3.jpg

Problem: Besides, there are several such incidents under the “food for education” program. Schools are provided flour, sugar and butter but no firewood and utensil to cook. In fact, the food for education program is running down into the drain. The poor, who are entitled to get food-grains, are denied it due to poor distribution networks. So, the government must probe this incident thoroughly and subsequently initiate action against the culprits. (based on the Kathmandu Post editorial)

you know why Nepal has never had good system of governance?
none of the leaders in recent history has admitted his/her mistake and stepped down as he/she couldn’t do what she was mandated to do. as far as i can remember, NC leader Acharya was the only one to have done it. does that mean that all the remaining leaders have never made any mistakes?
and more than that, the thing that is rotting our country from inside is people who point blame others for their mistakes. people like “scope”. every news these days, every comment these days, has to pull the royal house. these incompetents play the blame game to save their skins. i wonder if and when they would grow up.
the leaders who have no leadership attitude, hard-core followers who cant think on their own, and us who don’t dare talk about these bullshit stuff going on in Nepal.
if our countrymen are ought to eat crappy food then, why let the leaders enjoy their 5 star meals.
democracy shall never be more important than the 3 basic necessity of human race, FOOD, SHELTER AND CLOTHING. then comes education and freedom.
democracy is not just about flooding the street with the “right to speak” or go the the poll booth with “the right to vote”, it is much much more than that.

i am so sure that you weigh no more than 40 kg as the king took your ration so that he could eat it himself. i am sure he took your electricity for his own use, as well as the fuel for his car, water from your tap for his swimming pool and so on.
so you mean to say that in history Nepali people were dying with starvation. trust me, in nepal’s history, never has there been starvation.
you call me reactionary? do you even know what it means?
tell me when were you eating the kings shit instead of the kind of meal that you have these days?
why dont you ask your crazy ass, when was the last time you reached to the bottom of your pocket just to see if you had enough money to spare of a meal, and if you did that, dont tell me that the king pick pocketed it too.

stop your bullshit and stop blaming the king who’s power has been clipped some 14 months ago. do you think the ration distributed in those areas were sent some 15 months or so ago and just reached there now?

if you have shit for brains and can not grasp the ground reality then dont use it, just flush it through your crappy toilet. i am sure you have a toilet now dont you? or has the king stolen it also.

do us a favor and ask your mom, if it was the king who hatched some conspiracy when she was pregnant with you. well i am sure you will get an excuse to blame him for that too.

This is precisely the reason why this rotten administration need to be completely overhauled and put in place the indigenous people who will be less corrupted. Why can’t the government use helicopters to drop off the food to villages? They have used the helicopters to carry guns and kill the villagers. This system needs to be stopped.

“Yes, Yes, Yes….. No, No, No…. But, But, But…. Definitely Maybe!” – Nepali Maoist Leader’s Interview on CNN-IBN
    (Courtesy: Comrade Libre)

If doubts remain over the direction of Nepal’s Maoist movement, the anachronistic nature of the Maoist leaderships’ thought process, or about the Maoists’ interpretation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (and the related Arms Management Treaty), the interviews below are a MUST SEE!!

CNN-IBN’s Karan Thapar does a splendid job of hitting almost every issue of significance to contemporary Nepali politics (except the Bhutanese refugee crisis) and preventing Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal (a.k.a. “Prachanda”) from his well-noted tactical digressions.

Regular and pointed interjections by Thapar throughout the interview keeps the session focussed and Thapar’s intermittent summaries of Prachanda’s responses provide “black and white” positions on questions of relevance.

  17. scoop Avatar
    scoop

    In summary:

    On the Monarchy

Prachanda is happy that the second amendment to the interim constitution provides the basis for removing the monarchy but insists on removing the monarchy before the CA polls, regardless.
Implication: Begin watching for Maoist allegations that the monarchy is meddling in preparations for the CA, with a view to undermining the polls.

    On CA Poll Results

Prachanda maintains that his party will “respect” the results of first sitting of the constituent assembly (should the assembly vote to retain a ceremonial monarchy). However, he also states that should this unlikely event occur, the Maoist party will proceed to “educate” the people that their choice has been wrong.
Implication: The Maoists will not accept a ceremonial monarchy regardless of the verdict of the constituent assembly. They will “respect” (meaning they will cosmetically accept the results) but they will also immediately proceed to launch yet another movement (“peacefully”) to once again, rid the monarchy. Once more, this is a subtle threat being issued by the Maoist leader and a way to keep the masses in constant fear so that voting is held along the lines of appeasement, not free voter sentiments.

On the Surrender of Arms, YCL and Maoist Control

Prachanda believes that allegations against the YCL are highly exaggerated; he wants people of focus on how the YCL has helped clean city streets, build roads, etc.
Prachanda also stated explicitly that his party has not “surrendered” their weapons that the “compromise” that has occurred is premised on Maoist and Nepali Army integration.
Prachanda feels firmly in charge of his organization so theoretically, he should be held accountable to for the murders, kidnappings, extortion that his people continue to carry out.
Implication: Look out for a certain former Nepali Army General that the Maoists will bring on board to push for military integration. Although not mentioned during the interview, it is very likely that retired General Chitra Bahadur Gurung will take this spot.

Overall, this interaction session is one that Prachanda probably wishes he had not had. There was nothing difficult about Karan Thapar’s questions; most of Prachanda’s answers should have been qualified “yes’s” or “no’s.”

Instead, what blurted out of Prachanda’s mouth was a series of incongruent (and incoherent) responses, non-existent English vocabulary, and a very clear intent to disregard any political development that is at odds with a Maoist vision of a restructured Nepali State.

Once again, the Maoist leadership has told the world what their intentions are and how they plan to proceed forward. And once more, sections of Nepali intelligentsia, the Nepali media and all parties making money off of Nepal’s peace process, say nothing.

The lesson learned is this: There is not a single individual or group, or party in Nepal that can challenge the Maoists in the terms that Karan Thapar did.

Why? The answer is simple. During the Gyanendra’s rule or the imperfect democracy before Gyanendra, people could go to the state authority for protection if threatened by the Maoists. Today, no editor or civil society activist or writer can operate with a clear conscience because should the Maoists come after them, there is no one they can turn to – especially not the Home Ministry.

This is the status to which “Loktantra” has been diminished. Where are all the protestors abroad and at home, who took utmost pride in championing the 12 Pont Agreement and appeasing the Maoists? Where are all those people who revelled in fighting Royal tyranny and spoke of “morals” and dedication to liberal democracy in Nepal?
