India on Election: Nepal Could Set Its Own Example

At a time when certain embassies are casting doubts on the fate of CA elections, India has supported Nepali Prime Minister’s position that election must be held at any cost. This is important because elections must be held on time. To differ the election date means to give time to play dirty games to the royalists against democracy.

Indian Ambassador Shiv Shanker Mukherjee today said that Nepal could “set its own example” on the issue of holding timely elections to the Constituent Assembly (CA). The Indian Ambassador’s statement comes amidst comments from some diplomatic corps in the capital that holding of the CA elections by stipulated time was not possible, and that the election would lose its credibility in front of the world community, if held forcefully. Talking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala this morning, Mukherjee said, “Finalising election policies to meet international standards is not a priority issue” adding that Nepal could set its own examples in this regards as it had done during the peace process. Mukherjee further clarified that the Indian government would “support and assist” whatever election date the eight parties decide on.

The Indian envoy had called on PM Koirala to discuss border security issues. According to sources, during the 20-minute long discussion held this morning at the PM’s Baluwatar residence, the duo deliberated ways to strengthen security vigilance at the Indo-Nepal borders. The Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukharjee, during the recently concluded 14th SAARC Summit in New Delhi, had expressed commitment towards making stronger security arrangements to prevent criminal activities in the Terai region, where evidences have pointed towards involvement of Indian criminal elements in the recent string of unruly activities there. Indian Embassy spokesperson Gopal Bagle informed that the meeting had discussed the latest political developments in Nepal and the challenges that lay ahead.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary State Affairs Committee (PAC) was unable to finalise the bill regarding the number of seats for the Constituent Assembly even after three days of deliberations following a dispute between the Members of Parliament (MPs) today. (here is more)

Plus, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Bhoj Raj Pokhrel today said that the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections could be held even under “unusual” circumstances. Pokhrel’s comments come in the heels of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s statement in Biratnagar a few weeks ago that under “abnormal” circumstances, the elections could also be held in “abnormal” ways. Exactly…the plan of Indians (Indian National Congress and Commies of India) and SPAM is working out fine here.

So basically, Nepal is setting it’s own example…under violence and intimidation by SPAM the elections will be held…while the whole world is skeptic, SPAM and Indians are adamant on Nepal establishing it’s own example of Loktantra (not Democracy). The game plan is wide open here. Hold the elections and root out anyone speaks against the you. Don’t hold the elections and root out anyone who speaks against you. Nepal is a mess and SPAM is responsible. Naya Nepal is not being made on the Right foundation…don’t you agree.

Are the SPAM parties who do not have any popular support the be all and end all of Nepal? Is there no Nepal beyond SPAM? How desperate is the Indian government to have ‘legitimate’ puppets in Nepal?

I agree. SPAM are hell bent on hiding their incompetent. Indians have their own sinister motives in this third grade drama (???????) played by Nepalese politicians.

TJMM and MJF are deliberately kidnapping people of pahade origin in Tarai in a MASSIVE SCALE and extorting lakhs of rupees from them. A deliberate ethnic cleansing practice.

Yet, this fcuking government is sitting on its ass and doing nothing about it. Idiots are pretending to talk about the profound things only i.e. the constitutional elections. To hell with ordinary citizen, that is too unimportant for them.

The question is not afraid of CA elections. The question is afraid to take part in CA elections and/or to make your choice/vote without ‘proapaganda’ and criminals instilling fear in your brain.

Everyone knows the kind of civil war happening in Nepal. Everyone knows that if they speak anything that doesn’t suit the interests of ‘SPAM’ they will be imprisoned, house arrested or paraded on the streets. How Loktantrik can Nepal get!

You must be joking or smoking hashish. Are you Paras Shah’s chamcha or what? You make me laugh out loud.

Our leaders are doing just fine. We should help them stabilize the country. I also support the Indian ambassador’s position. With god’s blessing, we will see a stable Nepal in a year, and then the prosperity will slowly come.

it seems like you have an overly superficial simplistic take on Nepal’s situation. You also support the Indian ambassador’s position? Irrespective of the chaotic situation in Terai you think it’s still possible to hold free and fair elections? I guess this begs the question … Are you Mr. Mukerjee’s chumpcha?

When Mr. Shah conducted elections, these royalists were all so happy. Why should anyone fear elections, was their battle cry. Now that someone else is holding elections, and all Mr. Shah has nothing else to do but empty his alcohol cabinet, they worry about the legitimacy of the elections.

Let the elections go on. Let Nepal move ahead, let us get on with our lives.

And yes, the problem in Madhesh is quite acute, but its not going to get better by whatever little we can do. What can we do anyway? The best bet is to hold elections and work with the new power distribution.

Because the longer we wait, the worse the problem is going to get. Its a bad world, and the least bad solution is to hold elections.

These royalists always complain about the lack of legitimacy of the present government. If it is elected, will they be satisfied? The answer is no. That’s why they don’t like these elections. Because the elections will signal that it is the peoples’ verdict that the monarchy is finished as a political force.

    Barking dogs will bark………..

Get over this Royalist BS already and move on dimwit. Gyanendra’s takeover was wrong and every thing he did was illegitimate. I hope this helps you sleep at night.
Things have changed in case you didn’t notice. How the heck is there going to be free and fair election under these cirsumstances (unrest in Terai etc.). Even the chief election commissioner has questioned if it will be possible to hold elections under these circumstances. Read the news once in a while instead of acting like a 2 year old child by using the “Royalist” tagline. It’s getting really old and you are making a fool of yourself. Nepal is long past that. It’s people like you and noname (on two ends of the specturm) that still won’t let go.

    bhude pandit,

so what do you want to do? not hold election and stay like this forever? Will that make this govt legitimate? Will that make madhesis happy? No. Hell, No. It will only increase chaos.

Yes, CEC said it is hard to conduct election. God bless our democracy, we don’t have Keshav Rajbhandari type commissioner who advocated on behalf of the king during the election.

I am not one of those who can’t sleep well without blaming India on everything. Well, when it is time to criticize our southern neighbor, we should. When it is time to praise them, we must. I am reasonably sure that India is not interested to create unstable Nepal at this juncture. If that makes me Mukharjeeko chamcha, so be it. I am writing anonymous anyway, so what the hell I care:)

My belief is that once we have election, people in Terai will show Upendra Yadav and company their haisiyat, legitimate parties will be strong again, and we will peacefully shunt towards federal republic. Our country is a country of tolerant people, and so will it remain forever.

This elections is supposed to be creating ‘new’ Nepal, or at least lay foundation for ‘new’ Nepal. This election is not like mid-term polls; but this is writing our own destiny for our nation and the kind of governance we choose. Are we going to go for elections just because we have to get international acceptance or we have to lay foundation for creating better nation? This elections is for the Nepalese, not for international community. And how many have understood the purpose and need for the Constituent Assembly elections?

Follow the example of Venezuala wherein the Constituent Assembly elections will be held after 2-3 years after it was proposed because they say everyone has to understand its importance and its need. How the current Parliament and the government will include the demands of janjati and madhesi problems is a wonder in itself. The law-and-order has taken a beating and no one has clue what will happen next.

Come to Terai and you will see the farce of distribution of Citizenship Card. You can buy it for Rs. 3,000. The Indians from neighboring districts have bought these cards for Rs. 3,000 and to whom it was supposed to be distributed cannot gather documents to prove that they are indeed Nepalese. You will see Indians voting instead of Nepalese in these elections.

Yeah! right- India. Next time just say so ( our word is your command) not act diplomatic. No wonder they have no friends amongst its neighbors-few years down the line, India will unravel from being federal to city state (Bengal, South, Kashmir, Naga, Khalistan etc.,) I wish them speedy deliverance on this.

Yes, just like the fake elections in Kashmir and in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim, we should also “set our own” example by casting hundreds of fake ballots by a single soldier or a policeman to prove that the “voters turned up in large numbers.” I think, the UN including all other embassies are quite right. The CA elections cannot be held on June 20. I think, November is the best month.

No I am not saying never hold the elections. However, just because some people seem to be in a rush you can’t just hold the CA elections with the intent of ‘getting it over with’.
What the spaM needs to do (the leaders you claim are doing a fantastic job) is step up their efforts to invite the MJF, JTMM to the negotitating table. They should also remove that sorry excuse for a human being Krishna Sh*tula from the home ministry and let him run a zoo. That’s is one major demand of the Terai groups and our leaders seem to have turned a deaf ear to that demand.
Until that enviroment is stable CA elections are a waste of time.

Elections are a must for peace & stability to return to Nepal. If the elections are not possible in June then it should be held at the earliest date. The more elections are postponed the more turmoil will be created.
India said Nepal should decide on the elections and I think they said the right thing. But we are so anti indian, that whatever India says, we look for hidden messages.
We got to solve our own problem and worry that Un said this and someother country said that. Lets have the elections in June and get rid of this Interim thing otherwise our country could also be Interim.

    bhude punditji,

I think you got it wrong about Terai groups.

First of all there are enough Terai groups on board. You can’t go around appeasing every two bit leader doing ethnic politics. What is the guarantee that the Butcher of Rautahat will come to talk after that sorry human being Sitaula goes? Why do you think the terrorists like JTMM, who seem to be doing just fine by kidnapping people and getting money in return, will ever come to politics where they have no future?

What if tomorrow someone starts Fewa Tal mukti morcha, and starts beating madhesis working in Pokhara? WIll we stop election, and find the fellow until a dialogue can be held?

Politics is not about making every rebel happy. It is a process. Those who wants to come to it, they are welcome. The others are free to go wherever they want to go.

Election is a must. We must hold it on time, and teach the enemies of people a lesson. There are way too many people under the illusion that they are popular. Well, they are not. Election will show it.

Maoists Grab Land in Sunsari; Assault NTD Leader

    THT Online
    Itahari, April 12

Cadres of the CPN-Maoist have grabbed four bighas of land belonging to three locals of Barah Kshetra in Sunsari district. Dilu Kumari Tamrakar of Barah Kshetra-1 said the Maoists captured her land and have started tilling the land without notifying her. The Maoists have also captured the land of Sarala and Anila Tamrakar. Maoist district leader Deepak claimed that as the Tamrakars had been encroaching forest land, the land was grabbed by the Maoists. However, the Tamrakars have claimed to be the rightful owners of the land. Officer at the District Forest Office Murari Pokharel said he was unaware of the details of the ownership of the land.
Meanwhile, Sunsari district secretary of Nepal Tarun Dal (NTD) Hem Karna Poudel was critically injured when activists of the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League attacked him at Itahari chowk in Sunsari district on Tuesday night. Up to 30 masked YCL activists mercilessly beat up Poudel while he was waiting for a friend, said inspector Bishwo Mani Pokhrel at the Itahari area police office (APO). Meanwhile, YCL Sunsari coordinator Bishwo claimed that YCL activists did not attack Poudel.

Look if the poltical parties and the Maoists are that desperate to hold elections then they will have an incentive to enact some law and order, calm the sentiments in Terai etc. and make the enviroment condusive to holding free and fair elections. No one says 6 months – there should be no specific time frame like that. But you need a relatively stable situation to hold free and fair elections. I am not saying everything needs to be perfect – its never perfect. But right now do you think Nepal’s situation allows for a legitimate election to occur?

The elections can be held in a phased manner. People think Terai is burning, except for the Forum, all other parties are in favour of the elections.
All the Parliamnet (Madeshi) members of the major parties are in favor of the elections. This Forum is managed(Controlled) by some forces that do not want elections, and Forum will die down, unless Forum become a political party.
Forum will not be in a position to disturb elections, except in a few pocket areas.
Bye the way I live in a Forum Dominated area.

The way they are creating uproar and being admant for CA election even when they know it cannot be done is to show their upmenship amongst each other. Nothing more than that- its evident in comments made by Makune, Girja, & prachande- CA will be comedy of Trio. The only thing that will happen is, NOTHING. So lets not run with the wind.
